All Hail Yards After Catch
December 15th, 2024Here is a stat that blew Joe’s mind.
A graphic came across Joe’s timeline on Twitter from a stat geek by the name of Jay Cuda. Joe doesn’t know the guy but Pro-Football-Reference.com backs up Cuda’s numbers.
It shows the Bucs are one of the worst teams in the NFL for air yards, meaning completed passes doesn’t travel far. Joe has documented for weeks Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s aversion to throwing past 20 yards from the line of scrimmage.
But Joe can’t nitpick about the results. The Bucs offense is not the problem with this team.
Then Joe ran across Cuda’s graphic. It seems of Baker Mayfield’s 3,329 passing yards this year, nearly 60 percent of those yards are YAC yards, or yards after the catch.
That’s nuts. In a very good way
Remember, this is from a team that lost Chris Godwin for the season and had Mike Evans miss four games, with an unknown of additional games in which Evans played at less than 100 percent.
Joe can’t recall every seeing passing numbers so lopsided: air yards for the Bucs is among the worst in the NFL (No. 28) yet YAC yards is No. 1.

I recall during the Jameis era that YAC was very low.
I’m not crazy about the behind the line of scrimmage passes, but Godwin made them work.
BTW, Joe, what’s the word on his recovery? And is Licht going to pay the man?
Evans. Godwin. David. Bucs for life.

There is a chance Godwin might be available for the playoffs.
Joe is thinking Bucs may get a bit of a bargain for Godwin only because he is damaged goods (depending if he returns or not).

I’ll be shocked if CG isn’t here next year making $25 mil

Damn I have noticed even Mike is getting more YAC but that stat is surprising Joe. Otton and White lead the team?
Go Bucs!

This is more proof of how important Coen is to this team. His offense just knows how to work. We cannot lose him. GO BUCS!

That’s what happens when you throw a lot of screen, short slant, and checkdown passes. Don’t fix what ain’t broken.

The O is fine.
The D is a sieve.

I love those YAC yards. Coen is focusing on Baker’s strengths rather than forcing the ball down to field to make Joe feel better. Scoring 28ppg is the key, especially today. Let’s see if Bowles can get pressure on Hebert and limit their points….
Who’s going to have a big game on offense today? The game is being shown in Oregon, so maybe Bucky will ball for his fans back there. I’d like to see a break out game for Palmer, maybe he’s more than just a fast guy. Feed ME13!

‘The D is a sieve.’
no truer words have ever been typed!

I like what PSL said “ Don’t fix what ain’t broke “ . The Bucs offense has consistently shown the ability to score a lot of points against some of the best teams in the NFL !!
Coach Coen probably likes the completion percentage of the short pass game compared to the long pass game. His offense can be described as explosive due to the yards after catch from Evans, Otton, White, Tucker, McMillan, Palmer and so many others. Simply put the Bucs are just fun to watch because of the complexity of the offensive scheme !!
Can’t wait to watch today, it’s gonna be a battle!!
Go Bucs !! Beat the Chargers !!
