“Nervous” Tristan Wirfs

December 12th, 2024

So the Bucs came out of halftime Sunday after a rousing Lavonte David speech and allowed one of the longest drives in the NFL this season.

Thankfully, the 16-play Raiders march ended with a red zone interception by Tykee Smith. It could have ended with a 17-14 Raiders lead and a stiff Bucs offense.

Joe means “stiff” as in ice cold on the bench after an enormous break after halftime.

Left tackle Tristan Wirfs said the long break got in his head on the bench.

“I better stand up. I better shake a leg or something,” Wirfs said he thought as the drive marched on. “Yeah, because like sometimes coming out of halftime and having a long drive and kind of sitting there, you’re like, ‘Oooh, stiffening up a little bit.’ … But yeah, get a little nervous there.”

Interestingly, the Bucs had a rough drive (under 3 minutes) that was short-circuited by a Luke Goedeke false start. Graham Barton also was called for holding on 3rd-and-long but the penalty was declined.

As Wirfs noted, at least the weather was warm.

Pre snap penalties always seem to hurt the Bucs the worst.

  2. Gipper Says:

That 9.5 minute drive revealed everything that has been wrong with the defense all year. Pretty hard to fault the offense, when they can’t even get on the field. Nevertheless, there will be geniuses here who will blame the 9.5 minute drive on Mayfield.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

    It was all Mayfield’s fault.

  4. Jeffrey Becker Says:

how surprising, a 9.5 minute drive against bowles

  5. Larrd Says:

drd is right about pre-snap penalties. OL and wide receivers. Maddening.

  6. El HEFE Says:

@gipper no I blame the 9 min drive on injuries smh if u did any research at least like 20 min just to see the depth chart week In week out mfs have been hurt all across the defense don’t get me wrong on the offense too there were a couple of injuries , but still the defense has been hurt all year long that’s what’s been wrong

  7. Jmarkbuc Says:

It’s wild to me that when football was actually played like football, with real hitting (ala John Lynch, circa 2000) how many fewer injuries there were.

Maybe it’s just now a hangnail puts you out 3-4 weeks.

  8. ModHairKen Says:

Who is the staff chiropractor? These guys should be getting adjusted at halftime.

  9. BucU Says:

It’s a ridiculous amount of injuries this team keeps incurring this year.
Sunday a couple more will be lost for who knows how long. It’s what we do.
You can count on it as sure as the sun rises in the morning.

  10. Lightningvinny Says:

Wouldn’t mind the other team receiving the opening kickoff in the first half ,,, we have been getting the lead which seems to be bad for us early ,,, being behind seems to get Baker going lol

  11. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Lightningvinny…. I have to disagree. It seems to me that all of our wins have come after an opening drive touchdown. I could be wrong. Can someone check the stats?

  12. Beeej Says:

Todd’s perfect defense is give the other team a 9 and 1/2 minute drive every time, but only let them score field goals. Baker will always score touchdowns going the other way

  13. BAKERSBucs says Says:

But there was an int that’s what good teams do Idefense let them feel good for 9 minutes cause we r just to nice that’s like Todd telling tucker to not get the td so we don’t run up the score glad he ignored him. this is our mo this season let the enemy feel good then kick thier ass

  14. Deez Says:

@Glipper 9.5 minute drive was after two of his 3 turnovers that allowed the worst team in the NFL to stay in the game. The defense is hurt and most are playing out of position. We played most of that game with one true middle linebacker somehow the defense still didn’t let them run for 350 yards. Baker being as inconsistent as he has been his whole career is the reason the game was even close. Some closed minded homer Baker fans want to blame everyone else but the team leader the Qb.

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

Deez, okay I’ll blame the team leader the QB. It’s his fault in his first year he had a better record and a better playoff record than Brady the year before. It’s his fault he’s leading one of the most powerful offenses in the NFL. It’s his fault they are in first place this year. And it’s especially his fault that Tampa is getting National Recognition for being a well rounded football team that fights hard every game. So I’ve got broad shoulders Deez. So I’ll take the blame for this sorry excuse for a football team. You just kick back and continue being a dipsh..t

  16. Rod Munch Says:

What about that complete BS made up call on Wirfs for holding that killed a drive. In my lifetime as Bucs fan, spanning from the early 80s until now, there was literally only one stretch, ever, where the Bucs got the calls – and that was with NFL owner Tom Brady on the team. This team, every week, for decades, got screwed by the refs, and we’re back to those days now. The stupid Glazers should have sold part of the Bucs to Brady, maybe that would rub off on the officials.

And the Baker Boi(s) are in full retard mode.

Hey stupid, don’t ever compare a journeyman QB who choked big time in the playoffs last year to Brady.

I swear 99% of the Baker Boi(s) just say this stuff because they want to make sure Baker doesn’t get too popular, because if he does, he might ignore them. Well Baker Boi(s), Baker doesn’t know who you are, he’s not your friend, the guy in the commercials is a TV character – not your buddy.

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

Hey Rod I deserve being called stupid especially after I called Deez a dipsh.t. But the record shows in 2022 that Brady and that team lost awful bad to Dallas. And in 2023 Baker and that team beat Philly to death and then played the Lions within a touchdown. The 2023 team won more games during the regular season and also the playoffs. Rod, I would be stupid to say Baker is as good a QB as Brady. That QB I haven’t seen yet. But his last year he was one year past his incredible prime years. Baker is our QB now. And as we continue getting better we could win another Super Bowl. And football fans will say those Bucs are tough. When the Bucs won with Brady football fans said “well they had Brady”. We need a Super Bowl without Brady. The team needs it.

  19. Kenton Smith Says:

And I’d vote for Brady as the greatest QB of all time. But I have to admit I used to like the Patriots to get beat.

  20. David Says:

They better clean up the mistakes, chargers have a better defense

  21. Daniel Dream Says:

Too many penalties on offense, too many injuries on defense, especially. One of those we can fix this weekend and if we do so we can win the game. Go Bucs!!!
