Chargers QB Justin Herbert Has Another Sprained Ankle

December 12th, 2024

Bum wheel. Again.

Joe is a big Justin Herbert fan. But the Chargers star quarterback isn’t having a great year. He’s in a smashmouth offense and he’s battled a sprained ankle since early in the season.

He has another one now.

Per Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the Los Angeles Times, Herbert got beat up by the Chiefs on Sunday.

He suffered a sprained left ankle in the first quarter and had to sit out a play in the second quarter when he took a shot to the left thigh.

Herbert told the City of Angels pen and mic club yesterday his right ankle sprain suffered earlier in the year was more painful. Trainers decided to play it safe and keep him out of practice yesterday.

The Chargers, as a result of Herbert’s injuries, limited his runs in the second half against the Chiefs, per Nguyen.

New Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said he fully expects Herbert to face the Bucs because he is a tough guy and Harbaugh said he’s seen Herbert fight through tougher injuries.

The way the Bucs’ edge rush (what edge rush?) frustrates Joe to the point Joe might punch a hole in the wall of his Los Angeles hotel room, Joe would think a hobbled Herbert would help the Bucs. But outside of Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea, the Bucs can’t sack a lawn chair. So it really doesn’t matter if Herbert is out there on crutches.

Joe would think that with a sore wheel (two sore wheels?), Herbert may lose some accuracy.

Make him run and roll out. Blitz baby blitz. No statues on Sunday.

  2. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

Thanks for always, always, always harping on the toothless edge rush. It’s brutal and needs to change. We can’t waste prime Vita and Kancey with less than average edge rushers.

I hope the Glazers get on the horn with the mighty bowl cut of Las Vegas and make him an offer he cannot refuse for a Maxx Crosby. I’d spend two 1sts on him and extend his contract to give us 6-7 years of terror of the edge. I don’t care about the draft picks spent on edge bc the last few haven’t worked. Color me impatient and champing at the bit to see an edge rush worth watching on Sundays. Go Bucs!

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Herbert Plays the vertical game and takes deep shots. I agree it’s highly frustrating that the Bucs can’t take advantage of his injury. No rush and soft zone is going to spell disaster, even if Herbert can’t run. He is going to just stay in the pocket and destroy our CB’s and Safeties. This is going to be brutal, not looking forward to it.

  4. Pamhandle Buc Says:

Any edge we can get to help our sorry defense, I will take it!

  5. SteveK Says:

    Agreed,

And if the Bucs think losing 2 OCs in as many years to retain the 28th ranked defensive guru, it just hurts. I hope this isn’t the case, and I have a hard time believing if Liam Coen leaves for a HC job, we won’t find a “great replacement” 3 years in a row. Luck may run out. And it would suck to watch the next OC suck as to complement our bottom tier defense.

  6. Pamhandle Buc Says:

Take any edge our sorry defense can get!

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Kinda sounds similar to the Kirk cousins Achilles injury talk, now I think he’ll throw for 500 since he won’t run around much

  8. Xristos Says:

If Cousins could sit comfortable in the pocket for 2 games and have his 2 best performances of the season by a mile i dont think Herbert will have a big problem even with one leg.
We dont like to rush the QB just like we dont like to be closer than 10 yds from the WRs. Its just what we do.
    Go Bucs

  9. Tony Says:

Hopefully Vita or Kancey can flatten him.

Bowles Edge Rushers are Defensive Backs

Every time I saw Yaya, he was dropping back into zone coverage. Bowles doesn’t send his OLB. You can’t get sacks 5-10 back from the line of scrimmage.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

This is an open challenge to Braswell and Yaya. Are either one of you going to step up and do the job or are you going to be mediocre?

    Do something!

    JPP begging for a chance

  13. Jeffrey Becker Says:

can kancey come off the edge more?

  14. Joe Says:

can kancey come off the edge more?

    He’s done it before.

  15. Al Says:

OMFG!!!! It finally happened. The Joe-Joes finally said something bad against the Bucs. I thought this day would never come. WoW! Finally a real piece or reporting the news and not some JL paid propaganda.

  16. unbelievable Says:

^ someone is either dumb or simply doesn’t pay attention.

  17. The Buc'n Waterboy Says:

You staying at the Flamingo, Joe? LOL. Maybe with Herbert hobbled, we can get some sort of pass rush going. We just know it’s not coming from the outside LBs. But I like your thinking that maybe it will affect his throwing.

  18. PewterStiffArm Says:

Can anybody spell lighting up a pores secondary. Games like this are a set-up, watch him have an all- pro afternoon.

  19. NEOhio Buc Says:

Calling YaYa Diaby, does anyone know a YaYa Diaby. Why are you giving this milk carton ?

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Anke injury and leg contusion Buc Defense…..Are you listening?
Watch Herbert throw for 600 yards.

Some of the comments on this page made me realize why I quit coming to this site wasn’t;t because of Joe’s reporting but due to many of the really stupid comments offered by it’s really stupid posters.

    yo this guy !

    🙂 🙂 🙂

  25. Larrd Says:

The Chargers tackles are good. Up the middle might work best!

    Big game. Pretenders or contenders!

  26. EEK Says:

we’ll need to be physical and will probably need a solid run game to keep this close
unfortunately the coaching edge goes to SD

  27. Bucsfan Says:

Chargers are almost a 50/50 Run Pass offense averaging 27 runs and 28 pass per game. i expect Chargers will actually be run heavy considering Herberts’ injuries and considering Bucs D is allowing 4.6 yards per rush ranking 22nd in the league and considering you lose Herbert and have to go with Heinicke as your starter , you are kaput.
Flip side is Chargers also give up 4.6 per rush and Liam Coen is licking his chops to run it down their throat. Harbaugh is a run first coach as he has always been and Bowles likes running as well-This game is a straight up UNDER Bucs 17-14.

  28. richbucsfan Says:

I’m not sure the ankle thing Herbert has, the Bucs D won’t cause him much if any problems. The D is as weak as I’ve ever seen it. IMHO, this game will be an embarrassing blowout or close. In either case the Bucs come home with a loss.

  29. Kenton Smith Says:

If Herbert has to roll out I hope Kancey is right behind him. A little shove from behind may get in his head.

  30. Beeej Says:

I agree with what others have said: we are never going to get an Aiden Hutchinson type edge rusher picking at number 23. We’re going to have to trade some pics

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Here’s an idea for Bowles… if the QB is hurt, can’t move well, how about bringing pressure instead of sitting back in your trash zone defense and giving the QB all day to throw.

All year this defense looks 10000000x better when it’s blitzing and bringing pressure, and yet Bowles sits back in zone literally 90%+ of the time. Yeah, if you play aggressively you will get beat from time to time, but you’ll also force them into mistakes, which is a lot better than just sitting back and passively letting the other team go up and down the field at will with no resistance. You can’t expect every team to be playing their 4th string QB every week.
