Calijah Kancey Ought To Extend His Sack Streak

December 7th, 2024

Hot streak.

Joe hates to pull a Linda Cohn, but here goes.

(When Joe actually used to watch SportsCenter around the turn of the century, whenever Cohn said, “In case you were wondering… ” Joe always thought, “Actually, no, I wasn’t wondering.”)

So in case you were wondering, Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey is on a roll. The sackmeister has been tearing up offensive linemen of late.

Kancey has had a sack in each of his last four games and a total of five in those games and six this season. If he keeps this up, he may just have double-digit sacks.

And  Joe figures, Kancey ought to get a sack tomorrow when the Bucs host the Raiders at The Licht House. The Raiders have one of the worst pass-blocking units in the game. Or at least they cough up a lot of sacks. The Raiders have given up 41 so far this season. That ranks No. 27 in the NFL.

Of course, this also means Vita Vea could manhandle some poor soul wearing the eyepatch on his helmet, too.

Edge rush? Pffttt. Joe’s given up on that. If the Bucs get a sack from an edge rusher, that’s either an accident or an offensive tackle tripped over his own feet.

“Linda Cohn”..blast from the past Joe. Nice!

Linda Cohn is still at it I believe.

    Let’s dominate tomorrow! Go Bucs!

  3. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Maybe the O-Lineman will trip over his feet twice and JTS or YaYa will double their sack production.

JTS, YaYa and Braswell combined for 4.5 sacks. Some in here blame JL. I think this falls on the coaching. JL does a damn good job in all the positions in selecting players. And the coaching staff plays a large roll in looking at players in the draft. I feel it is the coaching that is failing to develop and edge player. But what would you expect from a HC that does feel an edge is all that important? SMDH

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Senor Harry I agree because the HC is a system coach and his system dictates that EDGE rushers MUST be just as proficient in dropping back in coverage.

Thanks for the laugh, Joe. Now that’s how you write!!!

  6. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs have some work to do this off-season. Our defensive front (in general) is one of the worst in the NFL and we have a slew of free agents to make decisions on:

    – A. Nelson
    – JTS
    – Gholston
    – G. Gains
    – Banks
    – Brewer

All will be hitting the FA market in 2025…

Yes , no doubt, the Bucs need a serious overhaul on the d side of the ball. I am sure itis coming, defense just to sad

I think we’re decently strong at tackle, still needing to draft another one this offseason because we’re not super deep. Vea is not getting any younger either. We’ve always had good luck in free agency with an edge rusher, so I would love to see the Bucs acquire one with the extra cap money. Though we’ll have more cap space this coming year, I doubt we’ll resign any of those mentioned by Marine Buc for a tremendous amount of money. I’d be okay with resigning JTS but he’s not making starter money. He could be in the rotation as a backup. Our first pick in the draft should probably be a edge rusher depending on who’s available. And middle linebacker comes to mind. I feel like the next draft need to be for 70% defensive players. LOL
I hope we keep Gaines and Nelson on reasonable deals, they’re solid rotational depth players.

  9. Buchen61 Says:

Braswell??? Is he in the witness protection program.

  10. D Cone Says:

Last week against the Chiefs the Raiders gave up 5 sacks, put up 434 yards w/ 318 passing/116 rushing, and were a rookie center’s mistake from knocking off K.C. Week before L.V. moved the ball against a pretty good Broncos Defense and turnovers got them there.

Can’t say that the Bucs Defense is even close to any of the Defense’s in the AFC West including the Raiders regardless of their 2-10 record.

If the Raiders force Tampa to 4 Punts and don’t turn the ball over they will probably win even if Bucs get 4 sacks. Then off to the West Coast to face a really good Chargers team and Jerry’s World for a prime time game is not going to be a cakewalk,

Bucs could be out of it by Christmas if they don’t play well above their Roster’s capabilities.

I’m shocked that Edge Joe realizes non-edge players can create sacks.

Really good points about the coaching and scheme preventing our Edges from developing, I don’t think it’s all on Licht. I remember Braswell in camp dropping back all the time instead of working his pass rush moves – WTF kind of scheme and coaching is that?

This coaching staff is so hamstrung by scheme that they can’t get guys to play freely. They can’t get many of the young players on the field and they sit on the practice squad unprepared. So it’s hard to evaluate the expiring contracts, especially if Bowles isn’t retained. Aaron Glenn has done a great job revitalizing CD3 and Pat, worth a look as HC.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

Where are those tmnt that we’re calling Kancey a bust early in the season?

Joe edge rush in this defense is irrelevant that’s why they won’t address it.
We have great individual players but still what free agent is going to get to the quarterback faster than the 2019 Shaq? Even jpp had 8.5 and the pass defense was 30th in the league. It was still in the 20’s in 2020 but because Brady controlled the clock.

  13. El HEFE Says:

Gotta let edge rushers rush if so I’m sure they would have 6 by now
