Is Quincy Black The Next Derrick Brooks?

When Peter King set aside his bowl of oatmeal, filled his face with popcorn and started slamming coffees Sunday night writing his Monday Morning Quarterback column, he included much Bucs love.
One of the things he wrote about was his new crush for Bucs linebacker Quincy Black, and King may have had a few too many shots of espresso when he penned the following:
Quincy Black might not ever be Derrick Brooks, but the Bucs linebacker makes a couple of plays a game that remind me of him.
King didn’t elaborate, but as much as Joe was happy with the play of the defense, that was a bit much. Black played well, damned well, but let’s not get carried away.
As the great Mike North of Fox Sports Radio would say, “SLOW DOWN!”

Joe, he is just giving Black positive feedback on his performance, not saying that he is Brooks………take it easy my friend.

Quincy is a damn good pass rusher, but Geno is by far the better linebacker, hes SOOO much more instinctive.
Then there is Rudd, who gets pushed around like a little girl by a receiver on a screen play. Did anyone else see that? Good god im done with that guy….

It’s pretty hard for him to be the next D. Brooks considering the play completely different positions and roles in the Defense…….

Funny I dont remember Derrick being much of a Blitzer … 2 different types of LBers … But Quincy Black has shown a few flashes of being Good

quincy and geno make a stand and are right now fundamental for us, barret is playing well, but like a leader he is, im expecting a lil more, but overall, our LBs are damn good, and i got a lot of faith about dekoda watson, that guy can be another steal, and lets face it, FSU LBs is our touch 😛

Black is developing into a physical force for this team who by the way was in desperate need of someone taking that role.
The person I really feel sorry for is the employee in charge of washing players uniforms. There isn’t enough bleach in Tampa to take out all the grass stains from Ruud’s A$$. You can’t tackle someone when you’re getting pancaked every other play.

Watching Patrick Willis last night and Ruud on Sunday has sold me. Let Ruud walk and lets get a mean nasty MLB that can plug a hole head on. So now I say the top 2 needs for the defense in the draft or free agency next year is MLB and DE. Just imagine if we had a Willis or Beason type in middle. BEASTLY!!!!!!

I glanced over the article and that was the only mention of the Bucs or Tampa I could find. How is that “much love”? 😉

I am not a Ruud basher, but on one play he could not get away from a receiver/tight end while his man — the RB — took a screen for a first down. Not good. My bet is no big extension, particularly if Hayes and Black continue to shine.

I have been a ruud supporter and have stuck up for him for a long time now…but im done. After rewarching the panthers game i’ve decided even though he is a smart linebacker, he just lacks the strength and physicality to get the job done. Especially against the run.
There really aren’t any great linebackers in next years class though. Maybe we can slide Black over to MLB and find a new olb. I like Watson alot…but he is another undersides finesse lb with great speed like Geno. Id really like to see us get a big physical lb that could give our lb corp some swagger.

Size isn’t everything, but id rather have linebackers that are 240-250lbs like Black, then these 225lbs guys like Geno and Watson. We will always be pushed around by physical teams if we continue to have undersized linebackers. I know for our defense we need speed, but there are bigger guys with that speed. They are harder to find but they are out there.

The entiore d got pushed a bit in the first half, in the second half they held it together, including Ruud. JimBuc, one play on Sunday and you are ready to throw the guy out? He is not dealijng with backs five yards down the field this year, and I think he is playing pretty good. Maybe he is doing what the pklay calls for sometimes as well, go read Steve Whites piece on him. Why would anone think we should move Black to his position, Black has finally started stepping up in his position why start over. Forget about last year to judge Ruud.

King also confused Kyle Moore with Gerald McCoy…I honestly think he confused Quincy Black with Geno Hayes…
But this is the same guy who gets paid to watch football for a living, yet didn’t even attend a Bucs practice when he visited, unlike every other team…
He failed to see how calm Freeman was, plus how hard he worked this summer…
He failed to see Olsen with a full year of his own offense…
He failed to see how good Mike Williams was…
He failed to see just by being alive, Price & McCoy were infinitely better than what we had last year…
He failed to see that K. Moore & R. Miller were back to being quick, having lost the “Jim Bates weight”…
He failed to see Talib be a top 3 corner…
He failed to see we have Tanard for a whole season, & a competent SS…
& he failed to see how good Black & Hayes were quickly becoming…
2-14. Wow. Without one ounce of research. Professional…

Remember peeps, the MLB in Tampa’s 2 deep scheme is really just an oversized corner, since they are asked to run with tight-ends and running backs down the deep seem. Run support was always something handled by our WLB (although, that might be because we had Derrick Brooks for the longest time at that position).

Barrett Rudd… I love the guy but he’s not a middle linebacker. Weakside at best. The middle backer has took take on guards and tackles with confidence not get pushed around by wideouts. Watch James Farrior, guy I grew up with that’s about the same size. Not to mention Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, Carlos Dansby, even Keith Brooking. Let him play out his contract and give Dakota Watson.

Two games into the season and Ruud has eaten more dirt than an earth worm. It’s one thing to get blocked out of a play; happens all the time, but to get completely decleated so many times is just bad news.

I hope Ruud gets a long-term extension because he has earned it. That said, I now see what some of his detractors are saying. The arguments against Ruud are probably overblown given his role in this defense, but shedding blocks does not appear to be his strong suit.

Did anyone else see the play where Ruud came busting through the line at the snap and blew up the FB 3 yards deep in the backfield, rerouting the RB into our line. He absolutely blew up that play. Does he get knocked on his backside sometimes? Sure, most every football player does. As many times as he gets blown out of a play, he makes a solid tackle or seriously disrupts a play. Is he the best MLB out there? No, but he’s also not the worst. Should we spend a high draft pick replacing him next year? No, we have bigger needs. It would be more prudent to resign him as an adequate MLB, and draft players at positions of true need. I would much rather see a DE, RB, or O-lineman as priority. If we let Ruud go, MLB jumps up in priority and we now have too many positions to fill.

I saw Ruud make some plays at the line and behind the line and I saw him make one of the most pathetic attempts at an arm tackle near the line I ever saw. A grade school coach would have benched a kid for that much less an NFL player. Looked like Joe after eight beers trying to grab Rachel Watson as she jogged by.
Interesting thing is, the players and Rah himself talk about how the team does not play a Tampa-2 defense any longer. Ruud is supposedly a perfect fit for that defense. So if the Bucs are not playing Cover-2 as Ronde Barber claims, then is Ruud really that valuable?

I like Ruud for who he is and think is an average at best MLB. I’m not OK with him being the answer to MLB for the next 3 to 4 years. Thus he doesnt get a contract unless its a really good team friendly deal where we wouldnt hate ourselves if he was a backup. Otherwise thanks for your hard work but peace

I don’t know about all that, but Ruud is playing the beast Ball he has played in about 2-1/2 years. If he missed one, he made a bunch more. I was all over Ruud and ready to cut him loose, but he is playing with 110% effort, at least as far as I can see. I still like the Dominick approach to give Ruud the make it or break it year to prove his value. I just hope that if he continues that they at least reward him somewhat for his hard work. Right now, $3.2 mill/yr isn’t too bad though and so far he’s earning it. Keep up the good work.

Nope. Dekoda Watson was 220-225 his entire college career. He somehow managed to be 240lbs at the combine, but a week later at his pro day he was 224lbs again. He’s got a very lean muscular build, I’d just like to have some guys that are a little thicker. Size isn’t everything, but I gotta believe it’s harder to stop the run when the HB is bigger than you.
It’s not even just weight, but mentallity. Dekoda Watson is another finesse “pretty boy” linebacker, and he might end up being great, but I’d just like to see us have atleast one big, mean, gritty linebacker that just loves to hurt people. If you don’t understand what I mean, watch the Steelers LBs next week. Like I said earlier, Lamaar Woodley is a free agent next year. He is exactly the type of guy I’m talking about.
