Todd Bowles Was Spinning
November 12th, 2024Joe admits needing to sleep on this because yesterday Joe was too frosted to coherently type after listening to the words coming out of Todd Bowles’ mouth in his day-after presser.
A lot of people will focus on Bowles saying of his poorly performing defense, “We don’t need any new players.”
Well, it’s easy to say that now. The trade deadline came and went last week. So what’s left, pull a dude no one else wanted from a Jiffy Lube oil change pit to play corner? Better to bank on guys who have been with the team for a year but still aren’t ready to play.
But to be fair to Bowles, he likely said this to demonstrate to his players that he has their backs. Joe gets it.
One answer Bowles had for the subpar play of his defense nearly sent Joe to eat Lisinopril. Bowles was asked how so many receivers can get so wide ass open when his defense plays zone.
“Part of it is because the quarterback has a little bit more time to throw than he normally has and part of it is that we’re not in the right area on the play action,” Bowles said.
So let Joe get this straight: Brock Purdy had too much time to throw — like a really long time to throw — and that helped undo the Bucs defense. OK. Well, one of Bowles’ right-hand men just last week admitted the Bucs really don’t care about an edge rusher. But now all of a sudden, quarterbacks are getting too much time to throw? Got it.
Maybe if the Bucs didn’t ignore or trivialize perhaps the most important position on a defense, this wouldn’t be happening.
But no, let’s turn these edge rushers into cornerbacks instead. Let’s reinvent the wheel.
And Joe thinks it is rich that Bowles brought up Purdy (or others) getting too much time to throw. Set aside his dismissal of the importance of an edge rush, the Bucs’ two best pass rushers, Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea, are sent dropping back into coverage on occasion.
If quarterbacks are getting too much time to throw, someone explain to Joe how or why it’s such a slick move to have your best pass rushers not rush the passer?
Joe found Bowles’ words to be dripping with irony if not double-talk.

He could probably put 30 guys out there on D & still have them struggling. If they hang onto him after this year I think they’re gonna have alot of unhappy fans. Licht isn’t really innocent in all of this either.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:15 am
Glazers…I implore you. Rip the band aid off!
November 12th, 2024 at 7:16 am
I’ve stopped trying to figure it out. It’s too frustrating. I think most of us are at the point of acknowledging we need a new DC if not a new HC.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:18 am
Todd is a genius. Stop questioning and let him cook.
With his easy bake oven.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:19 am
I’m not convinced Bowels thinks before he speaks.
When he’s on the sidelines during a game he looks dazed and confused.
Perhaps the Joes need to stop covering for him to keep the free buffet ticket at Raymond James.
He does what losers do, they lose, a lot.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:21 am
Miscommunication is a constant issue. That’s on you coach. Time is just about up if you can’t fix it now.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:31 am
Agree Joe. His ignorance with the past rish is why this defense is awful. Every good team has a pash rush l. I have no faith that this season will be turned out. Will be a 7-10, 8-9 season. I just hope it is enough to fire Bowles so we don’t waste any more years of our core players as he has for the past 3, hell 6 or 7 years for some on defense. Time to move on.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:32 am
His time here is coming to an end. His specialty is Defense-and ours stinks. Keep Liam as Head Coach and bring in a real DC like Dennis Allen.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:44 am
Weird. How come JL and the Glazers are saying very little?
November 12th, 2024 at 7:45 am
Buzzards are starting to circle Bowles, that’s all it is…
November 12th, 2024 at 7:49 am
Bowles is a sub .500 HC…..it’s not going to miraculously change at this point. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a great saying…..you can excuses or results but can’t have both. Bowles will always have an excuse, some may be valid but at the end of the day fans aren’t paying $100s to watch the Bucs lose. Nobody walks away smiling knowing the only reason we lost was miscommunication. At this point I don’t think even a playoff spot saves him. He’s proven he can’t beat good teams consistently, basically the entire season relies on weak opponents vs good game management. He can’t avoid lengthy losing streaks, can’t fix his own defense, can’t develop defensive players….meanwhile the offense is humming week in, week out with a new set of WRs every game. Bucs would be dumb to let Coen walk.
November 12th, 2024 at 7:56 am
Todd, please address why you prefer to go for FGs & ties rather than wins? Ever hear of “no risk it NO biscuit” ???????????
November 12th, 2024 at 8:04 am
Bowles is right that they do not need new players….. THEY NEED A NEW HEAD COACH.
November 12th, 2024 at 8:08 am
Joe really now, How can you all of a sudden expect logic coming from someone that will not play his best running back by far in crunch time? Let’s get serious here. Bucky with help from mayfield, came out in the second half against Frisco and owned them, and then shortly after the fourth quarter starts Bucky gets pulled. A child couldn’t make this stuff up.
Its all babble and platitudes coming from up yonder.
November 12th, 2024 at 8:11 am
Todd Bowles… R. I. P
November 12th, 2024 at 8:11 am
Bowles biggest problem is he actually thinks he is a great coach.
November 12th, 2024 at 8:14 am
How about Anthony Nelson covering McCaffrey on that crucial 3rd and 5 on Sunday? Gotta love our defensive mastermind!
November 12th, 2024 at 8:14 am
I dunno. Maybe drop-11 is true genius and we just don’t understand…
November 12th, 2024 at 8:16 am
Bowles is who we thought he was.
His ceiling is “mediocre.”
Hs floor is Bucs, 2024.
November 12th, 2024 at 8:18 am
I don’t know what to say because I do like Coach Bowles and don’t know what the Glazers are really thinking right now. Todd is a good guy and has been a good defense coach in the past. Something is going on, not the blitzes like before, but he still has the locker room. That says so much when you look around the league in the past weeks.
I doubt Bowles will be replaced mid-season. Doesn’t mean he won’t be at the end of the season; depending on the record or maybe not. Go Bucs!
November 12th, 2024 at 8:22 am
Spot on Trey – talk about a mismatch. McCaffrey would have been laughing after that catch with a DE trying to cover him
November 12th, 2024 at 8:26 am
Sigh…….. so many mistakes…so many weeks…
November 12th, 2024 at 8:34 am
The nfl is a what have you done for me lately type business. I applaud todd and his sb 55 defense only giving up 3 field goals to mahomes and the chiefs. I applaud him taking over during Brady’s last season and I applaud the 2 back to back division titles he has led us to. I cannot applaud how far the defense has fallen off. I cannot applaud his 21-23 record over the last 2.5 seasons. What has Todd done for us lately? Not much.
November 12th, 2024 at 8:50 am
This is what happens when someone F’s up, they KNOW they did, and now they have to explain it. “Oh no, this is exactly what I meant to do all along. Here let me explain it to those of you without my genius.”
I can’t say that I have ever seen another coach drop a 300 plus lb man into coverage and expect anything other than an unmitigated disaster.
Brave.
Stupid, but brave.
November 12th, 2024 at 9:07 am
I stopped watching Todd’s pressers. Nothing to see, move on. No doubt Todd is working with a talent deficit on the defense for a variety of reasons. However at the end of the day he has failed to adapt. Coupled with his in-game tactical mistakes I don’t see how he keeps his job next year. The Glazers are not letting Coen get away, so Todd better get his behind in gear. lol.
November 12th, 2024 at 9:11 am
Joe, the quarterback has too much time means they aren’t getting pressure, period. If they were blitzing and not getting the pressure, which seemed to be happening, yes, the zone gets exposed. Not in the right area on play action means they bit too hard and were out of place. Clearly, they need better pass rush, edge, interior push, whatever, it’s all not good enough, not consistent. They get a few sacks, but the pressure is not consistent. The LBs are not reading plays well, not getting proper spots for coverage and there are some missed tackles.
Do you blame the coach for it?
I do and I don’t. Clearly, you can go down and see he has doesn’t have good enough players. DL, including Vea, don’t play consistently, LBs all we got is LD. DBs, they are all hurt and on to practice squad guys.
Logan Hall had a couple of good games, where is he now? Vea, shows up on some plays, but not consistent. Kancey, getting better, Braswell – surely he should start making some plays by now or he just doesn’t have it.
LBs – JTS – just not good enough, Britt – not every down LB, LD54 – slowing down? The rest are just not good enough.
CBs – AW31 – couple of bad plays that hurt. McCollum – solid, everyone else struggling. Dean – can’t stay healthy wasn’t playing well before the injury.
November 12th, 2024 at 9:16 am
Todd Bowles is a great person but a horrible head coach
November 12th, 2024 at 9:19 am
Bye bye BOWLES
November 12th, 2024 at 9:31 am
So should they have gone out and get a couple hired guns to on one year deals to replace the two injured WR’s or to shore up the Defense. Either way it comes at the expense of the younger guys that really need to fail during live action to get better?
Bowles is sticking with the hand he has and banking on short term misery for future success.
Winfield was able to succeed due to the likes of Suh, Vea, JPP, and Shaq rushing the passer.
Once that was gone he has become so so. Beat by Cupp deep in a Divisional Round. Faked out of his cleats by Gibbs in another.
Winfield will have to get better through mistakes in live action just like all the others on Defense and Offense.
Some teams are already looking forward to next season with an early 1st round pick. Bucs can start looking forward to next season with their weapons healthy and back ups on both sides with more experience and a better ability to step in when needed.
Bucs had a catastrophic failure in it’s Formula 1 Racing Offense. It’s going around the track with a blown engine, blowing smoke, and the lead car is in the pit getting new tires and a tune up.
Fans in the seats see the smoke and think it might be over but the guys in the Pit know it is.
Down the stretch it’s going to become a case of who wants to be in Tampa next season and play will get somewhat better because of it. Just like it did with the Saints that are one win behind the Bucs after a 7 game losing streak.
Bucs had some luck in 2023 and the other side of it showed in 2024.
Next season will be better for the Bucs as a team. Unfortunately so will others in the Division. Hopefully the Window didn’t open and close all in the same season.
November 12th, 2024 at 9:36 am
On the 49ers opening drive Vea dropped back into coverage one play then Kancey the next… I wanted to shove a cactus in my eye sideways
November 12th, 2024 at 9:53 am
I don’t think I’ve been so over a coach. Tired of his zone, tired of hearing him talk, tired of zero emotion/passion, tired of him not holding himself accountable, completely stuck in his ways along with the rest of the oldest coaching staff in the NFL. Would give anything to have a Jim Harbaugh type or a Mike Vrabel. He has gotten so stale, no juice, boring. I don’t even want to look at his face anymore
November 12th, 2024 at 10:01 am
There’s probably a reason most offensive and defensive minded coaches give up their coordinator responsibilities once they become the head coach. There are just too many other things to take care of when your the HC. But not Todd. He’s the only HC in the NFL, as far as I can determine, that is also a defensive coordinator. I’m sure defensive-minded HCs have input into their team’s game plan, but let someone else handle the nuts and bolts. It’s not working Todd!
November 12th, 2024 at 10:36 am
I see the Bucs defense playing way too many types of defenses thinking they are going to trick a qb to throw an interception to Anthony Nelson or JTS. Then they rush 3 and the corners give up sideline throws when teams don’t have time outs and a better defense would give up throws in the middle but presnap you see the Bucs CBs backpedaling which the QB see and they just throw 7-8 yard outs to stop the clock.
The other defense they run is to blitz but they blitz the lightweights and they just get stood up.
Bowles “cute” defense doesn’t emphasize tackling and players winning one on one matchups. They really need to simplify the whole stupid trick defenses and make it more about individuals playing their matchups and playing physical.
I’ve been watching the Bucs players get worse every week at making easy tackles. Just throw out these trick defenses and get back to basics. This complicated changing defensive responsibilities throughout the game is confusing the players. They need more players that intimidate opponents. It’s very soft and passive and confused.
November 12th, 2024 at 11:06 am
Joe, obviously these last seven games will tell the tale. If we win them all, go 11-7, and get in the show, coach Bowles will be fine. If we don’t play well and end up not making the playoffs, tough decisions may have to be made.
That being said I think the defense continues to play better, maybe they’re beginning to play like they are coached and will improve dramatically over the bye. The Bucs really need to win out, starting with the New York Football Giants !
No more losses !!
Go Bucs !!
November 12th, 2024 at 11:13 am
The quarterback has a little bit more time to throw than he normally has is an understatement.
We are not in the right area is an understatement.
Sometimes we are not in the area at all.
Every game the opposing QB throws 35 to 40 passes because they dont care to run. Heck sometimes 50.
Of all these passes we see 5 to 10 AT MOST that a defender is side by side with the receiver and contesting the catch. Most of the time the receiver is alone. It is ridiculous honestly. We dont intercept passes, we only put hands on a couple of passes every game. Receicers are running wide open on the field. I am tired of watching that.
November 12th, 2024 at 11:41 am
Time to go public. Time for the Glazers and Jason to relieve this head coich / defenseless uncoordinator of his duties. Joes – we loyal readers have your back, all but a pontiff and a few acolytes, a dead snook and a box of stale cereal.
Bring it on. Start with a poll.
November 12th, 2024 at 11:44 am
Joe has his weekly Todd Bowles confidence poll. That won’t change.
And Joe sees no reason why Team Glazer would break from their steadfast rule of waiting until the end of the season to make a move — if they make a move.
So let’s say Bowles is replaced now. Who takes over? Kacy Rodgers? He would run the exact same defense. Why pay a guy more to get the same result?
November 12th, 2024 at 11:50 am
Bowels resume as a HC speaks volumes (47-64)…
He produces losing teams which means he sucks at being HC!
So much youth and talent on the Bucs being wasted by a known failure at coaching…
November 12th, 2024 at 12:14 pm
I’m sure he’s got everything planned this week during the week we’re off. I’m sure when they come back from their week off next we’re gonna find our punter & kicker in there playing CB, too! He’s gotta try every single thing & that’s next along with maybe throwing the cheerleaders in there.
November 12th, 2024 at 12:52 pm
Once again Todd has failed miserably after another promising start to the season.
His record in 1 score games is ATROCIOUS. His supposedly bread and butter talent is coaching defenses. He’s failed miserably in that area too. So the question must be asked. What exactly is he good at as a HC/DC?
What a waste of a season that could of been.
November 12th, 2024 at 1:11 pm
Didn’t the Seahawks just release their leading tackler and inside LB ?
November 12th, 2024 at 1:14 pm
i get it, coach is spinning…
but i really wanna see him hoola hooping…
maybe even a little hopscotch and musical chairs would be fun to see too
November 12th, 2024 at 1:17 pm
No Edge rushers (Blame Bowles) playing 4/5&6th cbs (blame Bowles) down top 3 receivers (blame Bowles) Baker can’t make a simple check down or hit shepherd on a out pattern (blame Bowles) I don’t get it.
November 12th, 2024 at 1:20 pm
In the next 4-5 games, the “easy” part of schedule, everyone is saying we could run the table because they are inferior clubs.
But I ask: Unless we are up by 21 going into fourth quarter, does ANYONE think we can hold ANY team out of the end zone or between the uprights in the 4th?
Epic defensive collapses at end of games.
I, for one, have ZERO confidence in our D limiting points in Q4.
Run the table? Not with the way our D has been performing.
We shall see, but I just signed up for an Advanced Creative Pencil Sharpening class, and it is every Sunday. SIGH.
November 12th, 2024 at 1:38 pm
Classic Clueless Todd! Fire Todd! Hire BB!
November 12th, 2024 at 1:40 pm
I agree with D-Rok. Every NFL offense will move the ball on our defense. It’s sad to say…but it’s the fact. At least that’s what the Buc’s D has shown so far this season. No lead is comfortable unless there just physically isn’t enough time left on the clock for the opponent to catch up. Not sure what that lead would need to be….but i’d like to find out.
November 12th, 2024 at 1:41 pm
One thing is for sure…we should never stop trying to score points regardless of the lead even if our defense is playing well.
November 12th, 2024 at 1:41 pm
we loyal readers have your back, all but a pontiff and a few acolytes, a dead snook and a box of stale cereal.
Dave Pear that is hilarious! I can’t stop laughing about it !
Let’s Beat the Giants !! No more losses !!
Go Bucs !!
November 12th, 2024 at 1:50 pm
Bruh, too much time to throw? No spit! What a moron! Maybe if we could develop or trade for a guy who could actually rush and sack the quarterback? Unbelievable. Say what you want about our recent investment of draft picks, but I squarely put the blame on the coaching staff. JTS was raw, but had talent, Hall, a tweener, could have been worth something. Yaya is regressing CK has a shot yet. Why is he so stubborn!? Everyone can see these issues except him.
November 12th, 2024 at 3:48 pm
We’ve played Washington, Philadelphia, Atlanta (twice), Detroit, Baltimore, Kansas City, and San Francisco so far. Even if we were fully healthy, I didn’t expect very many wins up to this point.
GO BUCS!
November 12th, 2024 at 5:31 pm
No wonder there is miscommunication with explanations like that.Mind bboggling. Since we don’t need an edge rusher and we just cut a fourth round punter can we depend on Licht to draft a punter with the first round next season.
November 12th, 2024 at 6:41 pm
Todd is a very good coach. If ya know FB you would agree. The players just need to do their job. I want him back!!! If not then only Liam should be considered
November 12th, 2024 at 8:41 pm
Donald G keep smoking what you’re smoking if you think he is doing a good job. Our defense is giving up record number of yards per game. We have been beat by end of the game last drives how many times. the refs have no respect for us because they know Todd will do nothing about bad calls. players don’t obviously care for him because they’re constantly out of position they can not tackle and are you happy with being a 500 team. If you like him so much you better enjoy him now cuz he’s gone at the end of the season. If you knew football you would never accept this record or the team play right now
November 12th, 2024 at 10:37 pm
A proven edge rusher isn’t important but QBs have too much time to throw because we’re not rushing the pass well, which is leaving the secondary out to dry, but the secondary also isn’t where they’re supposed to be…
Did I get that right?
So basically, every level of your defense sucks?
Cool.
Like I said months ago- offense has to put up 30+ to have a chance at a win.
November 13th, 2024 at 5:40 am
Over the top costs and bad teams are driving me away from caring are all
