Calijah Kancey Has To Be Smarter

November 10th, 2024

Play smarter, please.

Look, Joe is a big Calijah Kancey fan. If the guy can just start a season healthy, Joe thinks he will wreak havoc on the league.

The Bucs had the lead 17-13 early in the fourth when it appeared the Bucs had a third down set up for the 49ers having the ball on the Bucs-23.

Second down. San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy was flushed to the right. He threw (incomplete) from the right sideline as he was running out of bounds. As he was in the process of going out of bounds, Kancey was also in pursuit and clocked Purdy as he was falling out of bounds with Anthony Nelson at Purdy’s feet.

The hit was high, near Purdy’s head. It drew a flag for unnecessary roughness, first down 49ers.

Two plays later, George Kittle made a sick catch of a Purdy pass in the far left corner of the end zone, getting two feet in before falling out of bounds. San Francisco took a 20-17 lead with 7:02 left.

If Kancey used his noggin, perhaps the Bucs save points there?

Joe saw on Twitter that fans were outraged that a flag was thrown. “That’s not football,” one Twitterer bellowed.

In the third decade of the 21st century, it sure is.

Any time a quarterback is hit high near the head, that’s just begging a zebra to throw a flag. By today’s standards, the way the game is called. It’s not 1994. Anything close to the head of a quarterback and that defender better hold his breath he’s not going to get flagged.

That’s exactly what happened with Kancey. He hit Purdy high. That’s an invitation for a zebra to flag a guy. And Kancey was flagged.

Did Joe like the call? No, but it is expected. This is football in 2024. And as Joe has learned a long time ago, never, ever give a ref a reason to throw a flag.

But that’s what Kancey’s play did. It gave a referee an opportunity to throw a flag. And throw a flag he did.

I think you wrong on this, Purdy was actively trying to throw the ball

  5. Nprbuc Says:

Fire Bowels tonight! ( I refuse to even call him Bowles)

  6. Josh Says:

Yeah and this is why Mahomes was able to evade and run for a TD a few weeks ago guy didnt make that hit to avoid the penalty and probably why Baker was able to hold off Bosa didnt want roughing the passer. You play defense against Qbs to hopefully get a sack but more so not get a penalty in the process anymore…

  7. MadMax Says:

Safran is not that good, and obviously we’re worse….all good, here comes the draft….Deborah Williams

Thanks for changing or allowing a change to my words….this is stupid

  10. MadMax Says:

Safran Cisco will not make it… we need to draft debo Williams

  11. Usfbuc Says:

Kancey pulled up on the hit, also Purdy was still trying to make a play not trying to run out of bounds. Finally find me a lineman who can stop on a dime after running full speed to make a play in the first quarter much less the fourth quarter.

  12. Bosch Says:

Who is going to pull a hamstring walking their dog during the bye week?

  13. Buchen61 Says:

Todd Bowles makes $3 million a year as head coach… Going to be making a lot less at his new job at McDonald’s

  14. Joe Says:

Doesn’t matter. Can’t hit a quarterback in the head. That’s a penalty even if he’s in the pocket. Going high on a quarterback, again, is begging for a flag.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Kancey doesn’t cover passes…neither does anyone else.

  16. ElioT Says:

Dumdum play by Kancey. Can’t have that in tight games.

  17. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

This defense still would have given up the booty! Toad is bootylicious!

  18. Drunkinybor Says:

At least he has his manhood unlike his head coach

That’s kind of a stretch!! He’s a good player. If he gets a pro bowl or two I’d be shocked. Who’s going to reach their full potential playing for Bowles defense. They need a new voice

  20. heyjude Says:

Kancey made a bonehead move and hopefully learned from it.

  21. Pahpahmike Says:

As I’ve said many times before, that’s part of what make bad team’s bad and the Bucs have been doing it for a while now; such as, knucklehead bad penalties on both defense and offense especially when it hurts the team the most. Not scoring inside the 10 yard line especially when the game is on the line.

  22. Lightningvinny Says:

Todd will go 9-8 and save his job

  23. Delson Says:

This was disappointing. These losses are disappointing. We match up with every team every week. Super bowl contender we match up. Teams in contention 4 the 1st pick in the draft, we match up. We have close games but it’s not like days of old where we dominate teams that we r expected 2 beat. Bucky Irving is clearly the dominant running back on this team and Sean Tucker is a very serviceable backup and relief back. White should not touch the field unless it’s an emergency. He doesn’t read the defense with eyes 2 create a play. He runs what’s called with his eyes glued 2 the ground. These screen passes are old. We need the play action that bucky and Tucker set up. Defense idk what we’re doing lining up 10 yards off of the LOS on the opposite side of the ball with the ball on the hash mark. That’s an entire 30 yards of pitch n catch open field. That cb misses the tackle n it’s going for a long pickup. We need some Tampa 2 mixed in. Some zone with an inside guy playing man on the offenses best receiver whether wr or te. This is not that difficult. We’re making mole hills in2 mountains which I don’t understand because we thrive as the underdog or when our situations r from an underdog point of view. All week we should be practicing the late game situations. We seem 2 understand our playcalls and execute well. The reason I say this is because how we make all games close offensively despite injuries 2 key parts of our offense. Our defense crumbles n we give the ball 2 white. We run that play action 2 bucky teams bite cuz they know we believe in bucky as a runner. Otten slides off his blocks 4 receptions very well. N we’ve seen other guys make late game plays. Sidenote 1 thing I noticed on the handoff 2 white for the 3 yard gain was that a QB keeper was open Mayfield had space and an open field. I thot 4 sure that was gonna be a playcalls. Sadly no. Let’s go Tampa. Bowles get ur sh 2gether. U n licht wanted team 2 remain as it is then make the appropriate adjustments. I don’t want Cohen 2 take over bc bowles is a better dc than hc would it be the same 4 Cohen?

  24. Thisisouryear!! Says:

That make sense. During the game i thought they called a late hit because he was out of bounds but i kept saying to myself that was too close to call.

  25. Thisisouryear!! Says:

You have to give white some credit. He has some sweet hands. A couple of his catches down the stretch were very nice hands. I doubt the other backs make those catches.

  26. GenocideD Says:

I think i need to change my user name now…

  27. A Bucs Fan Says:

It was like the LVD play versus the Jets some years ago.

  28. Delson Says:

    @thisisouryear

I have a hard time believing that none of our other backs make those plays. I’ll go as far as giving white credit for making those plays but if we continue 2 doubt our players then we pigeon hole their talent. Within that same sentiment let me add that we’ve seen white as a runner for a while season. But rbs like mike James and Chris sims had their time wasted. I thot that mike James was a solid runner even with contact in a yardage losing situation he still made positive yards. He protected the ball in the short 2 or 3 game stretch he had when he was the feature back. A rb that missed his opportunity cut short by injury. We let sims go 2 watch fournette let us down. Frustrating 2 see this team not utilize talent

  29. BFFL Says:

Joe, please find out what’s wrong with Winfield. He looks terrible and making way too much money to play like this.

  30. Dan the Bucs Fan Says:

It has been a brutal schedule for our buccaneers. This bye week is so badly needed let’s get as healthy as possible and we will favored in 6 of our last 7 games. Possible be peaking at right time. What’s sad to me is Licht didn’t raise a finger to help this team. We don’t have a nfl starting wr on the field, we don’t have a single pass rusher on the field, we are starting a corner back who could not play for any other team in the NFL. Very puzzling how we don’t go get Hopkins or a pass rusher or a corner at deadline.

We are wasting an incredible season by Baker.

However I firmly believe we finish 9-8 get the final wild card once we are there we have showed we can hang tough with anyone.

I can promise you nobody wants to see a team like us in the playoffs.

Very dissapointed in Licht for not helping the team at trade deadline.

  31. Slacker Says:

Just checking in to see if bucs brass has the balls to rid of the problem yet…..

  32. BallHawk75 Says:

Anyone else notice how Joe is never wrong?

Too bad there isn’t a guy to coach up the defense………wait.

    That’s right, he’s a DEI hire.

    Never mind.

  33. Aceofaerospace Says:

What’s everyone so down about? We’re a whole game better than the panthers. Fire toilet bowls before this gets more embarrassing.

Oh bulls—- that’s called playing football and was a complete trash. F anyone talking about that being too rough.

  39. Florida Cat Says:

    Coaching Change Christmas

  40. Big Wally Says:

So now the muncher is whining again about the ref calling a late hit out of bounds on the quarterback. You would be the first to whine if it wasn’t called on Mayfield. That play gets called 100 out 100 times – no question.

  41. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Dumb and unreliable. Just like the rest of the defense.

  42. Dave Pear Says:

Too bad he’s not got a coach to help him.

  43. Buc4evr Says:

Not just Kancy, the whole defense is full of dumbasses. Led by the biggest one of them all.

  44. Dave Pear Says:

This proves what a well coiched team we have. Lovie is doing a great job encouraging boneheaded plays. There were…almost countless today. Glazers should and will give him a 10 year extension. That’s the key.

  45. Dave Pear Says:

Sign Algo Rhythm. A great defensive pick up. Nothing gets by him.

  46. Saskbucs Says:

Maybe I need to watch the replay again but I don’t think you can say he hit him high. Purdy was going down already and Kancey tried to slow himself up. Certainly wasn’t heavy head contact if any at all. I think it was a weak call but tough to complain about that when we got a ton of calls end of game to potentially win it.

  47. Joe Says:

It was like the LVD play versus the Jets some years ago.

Absolutely! That was in Joe’s mind when he typed this story.

  48. #1bucsfan Says:

JOE these refs were absolutely terrible. We got a flag for just looking at them wrong and another flag cause Brady was a broadcaster

  49. Bucsalltheway Says:

Purdy back foot stepped out of bounds before the ball was thrown should have been blown dead to be honest just what I observed through the replay.

  50. KennyJr Says:

NEW COACH NEXT YEAR!!!! BRING IN BB.

  51. David G Says:

That call sucked! The refs continue to make very bad calls or just plain miss oblivious ones! They still lost but something has to be done about crap calls! This isn’t weekend flag football this is a billion dollar business that outcomes matter! Especially when they promote gambling on games now!

  52. Dave Pear Says:

Referees and injuries are two excuses losers make to defend The Big Loser.

The final Lovie regime is over.
