Once Again, Defense Gives Up The Booty

November 10th, 2024

Sad defense.

Not only are the Bucs a bad team — 4-6 — it is very obvious to Joe:

The Bucs defense simply cannot be trusted in the fourth quarter.

For a moment today, it appeared the Bucs may win their first game of the season in which their opponent scored first. San Francisco did everything in their power to give this game away.

Three missed field goals. A shocking series of defensive penalties. They sort of escaped. The Bucs could only muster a field goal on their final drive.

Only one stop needed to get to overtime. One stop.

Ha!

It took the 49ers six plays to set up for the game-winning field goal. Six plays! 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy never saw a third down. He never threw an incomplete pass. Six attempts; six completions.

Sickening.

“Not finishing,” Bucs outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka said of that final drive. “We’re just playing three, three-and-a-half quarters.

“We need to finish.”

JTS denied the Bucs defense was worn out from the hot day.

“I felt good,” JTS said. “We’re just not finishing.”

Well, if the Bucs defense doesn’t learn to finish soon, then the season will be finished.

That’s now two games in a row the Bucs had their opponent march down the field for a win like they were practicing against camp meat in underwear football.

Playoffs? The first thing the Bucs have to do is figure out how to fix this defense. Or someone very high up the food chain at One Buc Palace will fix the defense for them.

Should have gotten 7 but defense would still have lost it for us

  2. Bosch Says:

    The defense is a bootie.

Joe says: Or someone very high up the food chain at One Buc Palace will fix the defense for them.

Really? Who? Licht? Glazers? Dr. Hamstring, the Trainer? Quack Quack.

  4. SBucs Says:

Todd believed that the 49ers were playing for the tie so he had his defense play loose (or to lose).

  5. FrontFour Says:

How is this loss on the defense???? Offense had a chance to win it and didn’t get it done. We get 7 and that forces the niners to get a TD with one TO and the length of the field to go. Maybe they get there, but still – the offense choked.

  6. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I’ve been a Bowles supporter but with the bye i think it’s time. Let him go tomorrow and make some major changes on defense.

  7. Buc in VA Says:

No pressure no win. Again and again.

  8. Joe Says:

How is this loss on the defense????

Let’s see: Game tied late. 49ers on six plays get into field goal range and kick the field goal as the clock runs out for the win.

Joe was at the game. He can confirm. The Bucs offense was not on the field during the 49ers final game-winning drive.

  9. unbelievable Says:

The 4th quarter? They can’t be trusted in any quarter.

Did they even get a single stop on their own besides the very first drive of the game? Every other one seemed to be the Niners screwing things up on their own, missing FGs, etc. Niners miscues were the best defense for the Bucs.

  10. Pewter Power Says:

    FrontFour
    the offense choked.

The offense is why there’s any hope for the season. Is it too much to ask your defense to hold it down for just a series.

  11. Les Says:

We never ,never had a good secondary for years now . They are always ignored in the draft .never a top priority !! Light needs to wake up.

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Enough with the talk. FIRE BOWLES IMMEDIATELY.

  13. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

If not for the 49ers miscues on special teams (muffed punt and 3 blown FGs), this game isn’t even close.
Fire the Cigar Store Indian NOW!

  14. Tye Says:

this defense is a direct reflection of their leader, failures at their job!

  15. VOT Says:

They handed us the game and we gave it back to them

Baker played horrible – missed so many open throws

You said it right, this is a bad team right now

  16. Mike S Says:

    Can’t finish?

Might need to consult a physician.

  17. FrontFour Says:

Joe keeps touting Ring of Honor GM, but where is the talent on this defense? Late round draft picks, undrafted FA’s and big money guys not showing up. Hey Joe, why not call out AW Jr? Or Whitehead. Or McCollum? Or even my favorite Buc LVD. We lost Dean and Dennis and there is NOBODY behind them. Everybody’s been calling out Britt – well Russell is no better. Who’s left. Diaby got all the hype as the next JPP. He’s been invisible. JTS is a bust. Did anyone hear Logan Hall’s name called today? Thank God for Vita Vea. The guy plays his heart out and is doubled on every play. Other than him, there is no talent and the guys that are supposed to be stars aren’t. Love Gohlston, but he should have retired already.

Or maybe we’re still just the second youngest team in the NFL and there’s still a long way to go to build this roster. Todd Bowles didn’t wake up this season and forget how to coach defense. He’s doing what he can with what he’s got.

  18. DBS Says:

Sorry. Someone up very high doesn’t want to fix it. He wanted to stand pat with what we had. So we have what we have.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

Looks if your ok with 8 or 9 wins Bowles is your man. If not its past time to move on.

  20. McBucky Says:

Todd Bowles is consistent in bringing his teams to mediocrity. He’s not the one to get this team of the next level.

  21. BallHawk75 Says:

    They’ll never fire Bowles.

He’ll get a contract extension soon.

    The Glazers love losing.

    It’s DEI approved.

  22. chickster Says:

Back being losers with a head coach with no balls

  23. Old Sombrero Says:

An unbelievable loss. Defensive 49ers penalties and we can’t capitalize,…..

  24. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Bowles was a sh@tty coach for the Jets, and he’s a sh$tty coach for the Bucs.

  25. TF Says:

We now know what we have with the Bucs. Great Offense, Putrid Defense. If there was any doubt it confirmed now. This was more a test of what 49ers team was gonna show up and who they really are THIS year. Coming off a bye, McCaffrey back, special teams NIGHTMARE. Not impressive. That ridiculous botched punt early in the 3rd quarter SAVED our bacon and made it a close game. There is no doubt that without that, 49ers could have marched down the field in the 3rd quarter and built a lead and everything changes. NFC is completely up for grabs this year. It’s the Lions and the everyone else slightly behind.

  26. DBS Says:

So. Last week it was Bowles fault not going for 2 and we had to go to OT. This week you want to blame the defense because we don’t get to OT. No. It was because they did not use our best player when we were in scoring position and they tried to hand us the game. Exactly what do you think would have happened with this defense if we had gone to OT with Purdy? The same. as Mahomes.

  27. Larrd Says:

They’d be all right if they didn’t give up a 30 yarder on the first play of every drive. It is like they are getting outsmarted or aren’t ready.

  28. No Mercy Says:

Love the podcast Joes and Ira, and it all makes sense now. Listening to the one Joe (Joe or John Doe?) talk about our lack of a pass rush at first I was like year whatever, Toilet Bowles and his blitz scheme can create pressure, NO!!! No he can’t. Out pass rush is abysmal with how many 1st round picks on our line to play this bad I think we need a change of roster construction because this is pathetic

  29. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I don’t want to read anything till Bowles is no longer calling the defense

  30. No Mercy Says:

This team defensively is so far away from winning a Super Bowl the offense is almost there the defense is nowhere close and that’s a problem that’s on toilet Bowles shoulders

  31. Dave Pear Says:

Cmon Joe. Everyone that doesn’t have a word similar to “defenseless” in their screen name knows what is necessary to fix this defense. Yay verily.

  32. Greg Says:

It’s time for Bowles to go. He’ll be here till the end of the season though because there’s no one behind him and what would be the point anyway?

  33. Saskbucs Says:

Have to get 7 … 2nd down run call was bonkers. With Rachaad White no less. These coaches just never learn.

And yeah the D could try to stop a 3rd down or a single drive one time. They stopped .. 1 all day? 2 tops? Rest were missed kicks. If you wanna drop into zone start rushing Vea and Kancey and that’s it. Put your 9 fastest, most sure tacklers behind them. 3-3-3 10-20-30 yards out. SOMETHING, ANYTHING different. Tired of watching the same thing every week and coming out with an L.

  34. Joeybagodonuts Says:

Defense has more homes than Swiss cheese. Can’t win without safeties that can tackle. I understand we have injuries but who is the guy that filled in the roster with high school players??

  35. View from 132 Says:

Winfield has declined more in one season than any player since Josh Freeman.

  36. Boltsfan17 Says:

Just fire Bowles for the love of God. Enough already.

  37. #1bucsfan Says:

Defense lost this game but the offense didn’t help either. Bucs should have went up by 2 scores before the final drive. Offense fought hard but field goals won’t win especially with this defense. I’m telling ya with the current defense we have to put up 35 pts to win

  38. Rick Says:

If the Bucs would have scored 7 with a minute left – EVERYONE KNOWS SF would have driven down the field and scored to win. Not sure how anyone could possible see different. We have NO defense and ZERO passion on that side of the ball. It’s a direct correlation to their passionless leader – Bowles. I feel sorry for the offense playing without its two top receivers – they stand no chance with this D. Every week it’s the same exact thing with no chance for change. The fact JTS is still out there on every play tells you all you need to know about our defensive ‘talent’.

  39. Xristos Says:

Here is a crazy, radical idea.
Instead of NOT FINISHING how about stop giving up 400+ yds every game.
How about play some defense in the 1st 3 and a half quarters.
How about let us see the opposing Punter more than one time every game.

  40. "Namishree Says:

The post was very good, I appreciate how you explain it, Keep the posts coming! Very good talent.”
