Todd Bowles’ Bucs Are 1-5 In Short-Week Games

November 7th, 2024

So how do the Buccaneers perform when there’s significantly less time to prepare?

The Bucs are facing that scenario Sunday against the 49ers at The Licht House. Tampa Bay’s last game was Monday night in Kansas City, so that qualifies as a “short week.”

With Todd Bowles as head coach, the Bucs have seen that scenario six times, including Thursday Night Football games. Their record? It’s an ugly 1-5, including getting the snot beaten out of them 35-7 by San Francisco in 2022.

Is just bad luck or a coincidence?

Considering the Bucs are at home Sunday, are desperate for a win and the 49ers (4-4) aren’t special this season, Joe thinks the Bucs fans are about to get the answer to that question.

For those wondering, Bowles’ Jets teams (2015-2018) were 4-4 in short-week games.

Bucs needs to sign Ngakoue fast!

  2. Rod Munch Says:

I assume the Bucs lose on Sunday, but good news is that the schedule gets dramatically easier from there. 9-wins is still the most likely outcome, and with the issues in Dallas they might still hit 10-wins. With the expanded playoffs, they certainly could still get in – and if the team got mostly healthy, who knows. This is a team that has beaten the Eagles, the Redskins and the Lions – and took KC to the limit. And if the refs don’t totally screw the Bucs in Atlanta, that’s another W.

Man, I hate Bowles being a gutless coward on Monday night, the whole feel around this team would be different regardless of if they made it or not, since you’d feel like they’re at least going all out. That one low T decision just killed the good vibes that was built during that game, and I’m afraid it will carry over vs the 49ers.

    PPPSSSSSTTTT….
Bucs HC is a loser so no shocker there!

  4. Badbucs Says:

Perfect analysis @Rod. The players are not the issue. I doubt they’ve given in to the negativity as yet. There are a number of veteran leaders on the team and quality young guys. Season is only half over. If the coaching staff doesn’t get in the way we have a chance for playoffs.

  5. Jeff Says:

    20% chance of winning.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

If the playoffs started today, the Bucs would miss out by quite a bit. Washington, Detroit, Atlanta & Arizona lead the 4 NFC divisions, and the Eagles, Vikings, Packers, Bears, Rams & 49ers all have better records than we do … with only 2 of them teams making it in as wildcards. Running the table will obviously help (we MIGHT finish 12-5 still), but you could say the same for those other teams as well.

Bucs will need to play a LOT better (especially on defense obviously) and will need a LOT of luck to make the playoffs. I for one hope that they can do it because it’d be awesome to watch, but at the same time I’m not gonna put money on it.

  7. Day 1-76 Says:

Todd Bowles teams suck in any situation that requires Head Coaching decisions.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – With the expanded playoffs, if you get to 10 wins, that should be enough, and there’s still half a season to go.

As for the defense, they need Dean back immediately. Garbage players like Hayes and Funderburk… as I’ve said many times I’m not a fan of Bowles as a head coach, but I really don’t know what he’s supposed to do when you’re having to start a guy who in week 1 was 7th or 8th on the depth chart. This is why in the offseason I didn’t get all the dummies who were actually cheering getting rid of Davis, who was by far the teams #1 corner. Smith has been good by rookie standards, but if you had Davis they almost certainly win that KC game, and Atlanta game as well.

Anywho, the team will have to win on offense, while you just try to get by on defense and hope someone steps up.

BLAH BLAH BLAH…………..THIS SEASON WILL BE WHAT IT IS 8-9 WINS AT BEST AND NO PLAYOFFS.

    HE SUCKS.
Liam Cohen has figured out how to get the offense productive with injuries……Bowles cannot get his defense to play to the level of the offense.

    Fire Bowles…………Hire Belichik

The 49ers are coming off their bye week I wondered what their record is coming off a bye?

  11. EEK Says:

    not looking promising

  12. Tucker Says:

They will certainly be special with McCaffrey back Joe

  13. Tucker Says:

They had Bryce hall at the time, so fans weren’t dumb munch, no one expected him to break his leg at the start of the season, that is the nature of injuries unpredictable.

  14. Pewter Power Says:

    @Day 1-76

That is epic!!! You’d think Todd Bowles would go down swinginn in the last head coaching job he’ll ever have unless he decides high school is the way to go

For starters you go for 2 for the win…. Period

  16. Kenton Smith Says:

49ers probably the 2nd best team in the NFC we’re third and Detroit will have home field. Maybe Sunday I’ll say we’re the 2nd best. Rod Munch you assume we lose Sunday. Another great game and I’m hoping we’re “due”. I can’t believe I’m saying it but I’ll be glad when Dean gets back. Defense Rules says he wouldn’t put his money on it that we make the playoffs. Don’t worry DR, I’ve taken care of that angle. Now guys, how we gonna beat Detroit at Detroit this winter? I’ll go see that one!

  17. Dave Pear Says:

Wait – LovieII actually won a short eeek game at some point? Impressive. Not this time. It’s over.

  18. Buchen61 Says:

Im with Rod… I dont see the bucs keeping up with tlhe niners offense this weekend… Besides that Todd might decide to fake punt from his own 5 yard line so i dont see a win this Sunday

  19. Buc4evr Says:

Coen will keep it close but Todd will find a way to screw it up in the last few minutes of the 4th. It’s just anyone’s guess how Todd will screw it up: Timeouts? Not throwing a red flag?, not going for it on 4th and one? Clock management? Or something else?

  20. Kenton Smith Says:

Dave Pear – man this team must have really let you down a few times over the years. But I can see that you are a true fan as much as anyone on here. You say it’s over but it’s not! Fans like you deserve a good product and you’re getting it! It’s not over until we’re mathematically eliminated. That ain’t happening soon. When you start feeling too negative just conjure up Cade Otten and that OLine with rookie Barton and Super Bowl champ Wirfs. Wonder what they’re thinking about this season? Winfield is getting pissed off and so is LD. And Bakers happy as hell to be around guys who love the competition as much as he does. I hope this season goes down like I think it will. Fans like you deserve it.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Does Bowles have a plan for CMC?

How about for Purdy? He has absolutely torched Bowles in every game he’s ever played against us.

  23. Dave Pear Says:

Kenton – it’s exactly what you said that is driving me nuts. First time since BA we have a potent offense and an effective O-line. Thanks to LovieII we are wasting it. As a Bucs fan since 1976, I’ve grown to appreciate, and expect, good defense from the Bucs. We haven’t seen it since BA quit, and it will only get worse as LovieII’s soft Cover Who scheme is picked apart by journeymen and studs alike. At least they can’t stop the run either now.

The glimmer of hope is that on Monday, Jason and the Glazers have seen enough of the same mistakes made over and over, the outrageously egregious and bizarre coaching decision mistakes in game, the chronic regression of talented players, and make the move to place LovieII as adjunct faculty at University of Tampa. There, he can create an entire curriculum on how to build a losing team with talented people.

Liam as interim head coach . Please.

    ^^^^^^^^^^

This is a great observation. Prime Time games, short weeks, timeouts, late game situations, fast starts to the season, etc. Every time the game requires a competent head coach decision, Todd is either outcoach or makes a bad decision.

Earlier in the year the Bucs started the season by winning. Joe even asked Todd, “The past few times you started fast the team got overconfident. What are you going to do differently?” What did he do? …. Nothing new. Teams have figured out how to score on his defense. What does he do? Nothing new.

Same coaching = Same problems. He’s a one trick pony. He’s done.
