Baker Mayfield Passing Chart Week 9

November 7th, 2024

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield.

On Monday night, while the Bucs didn’t pull out a win, one thing impressed Joe.

Liam Coen called one helluva game. Down his two top receivers and a third the team had banked on before the season, Coen did a masterful job getting a lot out of his weapons.

Switching up running backs, running behind Tristan Wirfs (!), giving Baker Mayfield a wide variety of targets, Coen used a lot of smart, well-crafted and creative plays.

And it wasn’t like Coen was facing the Bucs defense. Even with Pat Mahomes, the Chiefs are undefeated this season largely because of their defense.

Even though Coen was really short-handed, his offense remained the same. It’s a dink-and-dunk offense (Mayfield ranks No. 31 for quarterbacks throwing passes at or beyond the first down marker) — but it’s working.

Monday night, Mayfield threw just one pass farther than 20 yards downfield. Of his 31 pass attempts, nearly a third (10) were thrown to targets behind the line of scrimmage. Despite this, Mayfield averaged nearly seven yards of offense per throw.

Joe is almost convinced Coen is going to be a head coach somewhere next fall. He’s doing that good of a job.

If Bowls does not fix the defense. Could Liam be the next head coach of our Bucs? Also would need a DC then.

  2. Xristos Says:

Coen is doing a really good job so far.
He s Offense works better than Canales last year and Canales got a HC job.
When Canales left i was lukewarm to be honest but With what Coen has shown so far i think it will be a shame if we dont see this Offense in a 2nd year.
    Go Bucs

I’m not so sure hiring someone with only one year of NFL OC experience is as attractive as it may have been. Just because a coach has been an OC or DC doesn’t mean he has the experience needed to guide the entire franchise to a successful season. Look at the debacle with Canales in Carolina. Nevertheless, I think Licht has to find a way to lock down Coen for at least another year to ensure he won’t be poached.

  4. Baking with Coen Says:

The way Bowles is managing the games Coen will be our HC in 2025. That’s a no brainer. Pun intended.

Let’s Buck, TUCK, White and Bake!!!!!

  5. Defense Rules Says:

Personally think that saddling a brand-new HC with either OC or DC responsibilities is the kiss of death. It’s hard enough to be an effective coordinator without ALSO having to simultaneously learn how to manage the entire team as HC.

Of course, some might point to Dave Canales as the exception. Oh wait, he’s 2-7 right now, after beating the dysfunctional Raiders & Saints. Nevermind.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

BTW Joe, NFL teams typically hire coaches (other than HCs) fro 2-year contracts I believe. Why doesn’t the NFL make other teams honor that contract instead of allowing them to poach coordinators after 1 year? Or at least establish a ‘penalty’ for hiring away another team’s 1st year coordinator (say a 1st or 2nd Rnd draft pick).

  7. buccaneric Says:

I want Coen to stay and or be HC. But my opinion means nothing.

  8. WiscoJoe Says:

Coen will be our HC next year, Joe!

  9. Saskbucs Says:

Coen is a better OC than Canales. Canales is still a good coach. The Panthers were gonna be a mess with any coach, not like they were a winning ball club last season and Canales has taken them backwards.

If anything, with their injuries, having them show up and win Sunday means Canales is somewhat holding that locker room together. If the Bucs can’t regroup and go on a 2nd half run like last year, perhaps they will be missing Canales positive presence.

Anyway, Coen seems to be great, slapping HC on his plate might not be good for anyone next season but we will hopefully retain him one way or the other and find out.

    Baker- the Head Coach maker.
Meybe Cansles and Cohen are riding Mayfields coatails.
Belacheat sucks, but Rode Bradys talent long enough to be vonsidered a great Coach. Hes not. He sucks. Sucked before Brady. Sucked after Brady.

Mayfield is making every OC we have look great. Hes never gonna have the same OC 2 years in a row- unless one takes over Head coach at their current team
Which might happen here. That defense is ugly so far. Licht and Bowles are both a little nervous, I imagine.
