Status Quo At The Trade Deadline

November 5th, 2024

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht at Arrowhead Stadium last night.

The Bucs have a message for fans and their coaching staff. There’s enough talent in the building to win.

Tampa Bay didn’t make a move at the NFL trade deadline, which expired at 4 p.m. today.

Old man edge rusher Za’Darius Smith, 32, was traded from the Browns to the Lions with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a fifth- and a sixth-round pick next season. The three-time Pro Bowler, who has bounced around the NFL in his 10-year career, has five sacks this season.

The Bucs have a poor edge rush but stood firm.

Once upon a time, Joe used the headline “Status Woe” for the Bucs’ front office, but Joe doesn’t believe that applies today.

Is it Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht’s fault the Bucs are 4-5 this season? Joe would argue that a blend of poor coaching and brutal calls by officials have cost the Bucs two wins this season.

Sure, one could argue easily that Licht didn’t buy the proper groceries at inside linebacker or at outside linebacker, considering an edge rush is a vital cog in championship teams. But that doesn’t mean Smith was the correct trade to make.

Bucs fans went mental when the Falcons signed free agent stud edge rusher Matthew Judon this summer. Well, Judon has been struggling for months and has 1 1/2 sacks in 9 games. Joe has heard and seen Atlanta fans freaking out.

Yannick Ngakoue and Jadeveon Clowney, big-name pass rush mercenaries, have done a whole lot of nothing this year for their respective teams.

Of course, you can’t improve without trying. But the Bucs didn’t budge today and fans will have to live with it.

Free agent cornerbacks remain on the market along with linebacker help, so the Bucs can still try to upgrade. But there’s no superstar coming to stroll past the Jon Gruden statue in the One Buc Palace lobby and try to save this Bucs team.

I feel this is more of this is the team you wanted. This is the team you getting. You have till the end of the end f the season t fix this. But he’s probably gone at this point.

  2. Durango 95 Says:

Wouldn’t make a difference. Why waste draft capital on a coach that can’t win with the talent he already has. Such a waste of a terrific offense. Such a waste of what could have been a great season.

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Sad that it would only take a few veterans to fix the defense. Let’s just keep JTS and tank the season. Geez. Jason, at least re-sign Mike Edward’s…that shouldn’t be too difficult….….

  4. BUCCaDAWG Says:

I think the reason for no trade moves is the season.is done , even if the birds do lose a couple games they have both tie breaks , we aren’t a good enough team to get a wildcard so this is a .500 season if they are lucky. The offense is serviceable but the Defense is in the 1st stage of aa rebuild. They have a few pieces in place but a new coach may be coming in the off season so why break the bank on over priced in season acquisitions. Wait & see what the new guy wants. Maybe a new GM but I doubt it. But like I said our GM took #9 when a much more productive Edge rusher was there . Let’s say it together the Buc anthem. WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR.

  5. First Name Greatest Says:

Jason is not a fan of adding talent he prefers to draft it and hold onto underperforming players for far too long and bypassing obvious upgrades

    Status Woe

  6. BPBucsfan Says:

As I says before, nothing was going to happen. The best run team Kansas City identifies a need and they go get it. Need a receiver get DeAndre Hopkins for 5th round pick. Looked pretty smart last night. We have positions of need and what happens? Nothing. Oh well, 4-5 now, most likely 4-6 after Sunday.

  7. SBucs Says:

Jason believes in Todd’s ability to replay the five loses and win them this time.

  8. Allbuccedup Says:

    He always stands pat.

  9. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I think they win out. The defense was night and day difference from the week before against a better opponent. He kept the ends end to rush the passer and stopped playing so cute. They were able to get pressure without blitzing. Josh Hayes was the weak link. How long is Dean out? Maybe they pull Hayes and play an extra safety. Could Winfield play outside? We miss CD3 right now. I still think we’re better wo DW45 though.

  10. ChiBuc Says:

Will JL address Fandom re his apathy? Doubt it. The groundhog only comes out when the sun is shining.

I’m a JL fan, but why pay top dollar to you WR1, LT, S, and QB and put the rest of the team on a 4 yr welfare rookie contract plan. He is wasting offensive talent to save a 6th rd pick so we can land another Hayes? And the cycle continues

  11. Coburn Says:

Im ok with it. I know no one wants to hear it, but does anyone actually think we are one piece away from winning a Superbowl? Its true that playoffs are a different ball game, but i just don’t see it… Have to think of the future otherwise

  12. ChiBuc Says:

Maybe not 1 piece from a SB, but 1 piece from 6-3 vs 4-5

  13. Winny Testaverde Says:

It was awfully nice of The Titans to hand delver Hopkins to the two-time defending champs. He made all the difference last night.

Not sure who the Bucs could have gotten who would have made a difference. I’m a little surprised Lattimore didn’t go to K.C. as well. Good for the Commanders to swoop in.

  14. Coburn Says:

Ir that’s what we are talking about I don’t think its worth giving uo draft capital mainly for short term. I suspect at deadline its mote of a premium than say pre draft

  15. Bubby Says:

    Jason presumably hired Bowles.

Judon would still be our best outside rusher.

    Lichts out.

  16. gp Says:

***There’s enough talent in the building to win.***

I may be all alone in this room, but I’m in full agreement with this statement.
We have the talent. It’s just not all being used properly.
A little fine tuning turns a dog of an engine into a winning street racer!

  17. BallHawk75 Says:

Why waste draft capital on a team coached by a fool.

This guy didn’t earn the job. It was gifted to him.

Licht gifted the franchise with a turd wrapped in a dead skunk.

    It’s a Bucs life!!!

  18. gp Says:

Short a couple of bad calls by the refs, we would be sitting on a 7-2 or better record right now. As it is, we will have to run the tables undefeated just to sniff a possible wildcard slot.
Perhaps the added investment just doesn’t warrant the return.

  19. Tucker Says:

Or rather too many holes to plug more likely

  20. BUCCaDAWG Says:

Glaciers don’t do alot of player moves during the season, when the season ends then fire the HC promote Coen hire a couple of position coaches pick up more talented players ,the rebuild is already underway. There will bee a lot more to pick from

  21. Pryda30 Says:

We played a lot lot better on defense in my opinion for the Chiefs. I have confidence that we are going to win against the 49ers and I think by the end of the season against easier opponents our defense line is going to feast hopefully yaya can explode.

  22. Zoocomics Says:

What difference would 1 player make? Couldn’t imagine we’d trade for multiple players. It would have been nice to have found an ILB, I think that might stabilize the defense, at least a little bit.

I disagree with those that claim we have the talent we need… WE DON’T. When you’re relying on JTS as a starting OLB you’ve already lost. We put a lot on Yaya being the next big thing for us at OLB, right now he’s the not the game wrecker we were hoping for in year 2, and this with the OUTSTANDING production of our DTs. SMH. JBF and IRA on their last podcast spoke about how this is the same defense as last year…yet we’re missing 4 key players right now, 3 of which are no longer on this team. To start we’re a better team when Dean is on the field. Then you got Carlton Davis, Shaq Barrett, and yes, I’m going to say it… Devin White. All 4 of these players had a better ceiling than most and/or the guys we got to replace them. Did they struggle, yes, but on ok day they’re better than Britt, JTS, and whatever undrafted free agent we have covering for Dean on their best day. You are seeing why we have consecutive bad games vs the occasional bad game like last season.

Coached properly or not coach properly, we don’t have the talent to pressure with 4. All championship caliber teams can pressure with 4 and don’t have to blitz 65% percent of the time to get pressure on the QB. When you’re facing good QBs, the blitz simply doesn’t work as consistent and the only way to win is to pressure with 4. Do the X’s and O’s math with a 4-man pressure. Not as many holes for QBs to throw to, it’s that simple. I like this scenario for Bowles. I don’t hate the guy but I’m tired of the decision making like many of you. So now, Bowles is coaching for his career. The schedule favors him, and it only gets better after the bye if Evans returns healthy.

I will also caveat to all the fans that think we should promote Coen to head coach. Man, if there was any other scenario where we can hire around him, keep him as coordinator, see if he can duplicate his success in year 2, let him get a bit saltier, that is the way we should go…the youth movement has slowed in the NFL… many talented young coordinators have not cut it as head coach… I can imagine, it’s a lot, plus game planning your offense for the week. These guys that opt to wear 2 hats is just too much imo.

  23. Again Says:

Glazers are making a fortune off of the idiots that buy tickets every week. No need to spend the money. A 500 team keeps the money flowing without having to pay major talent

  24. toopanca Says:

After 9 weeks of play, the sample size is great enough for power rankings to have some value.

In the Week 10 ESPN Power Rankings, the Bucs are ranked 16th.

In the remaining eight games, the Bucs face two higher ranked teams – the 14th ranked San Francisco 49ers ranked and the 13th ranked LA Chargers. The other six remaining games are against:
    – the 27th ranked Giants
    – the 32nd ranked Panthers
    – the 31st ranked Raiders
    – the 22nd ranked Cowboys
    – the 32nd ranked Panthers again
    – the 29th ranked Saints.
If the Bucs lose to the higher ranked teams and win against the lower ranked teams, the Bucs win six more games, they end the season 10-7, and they have a shot at the playoffs considering that they have the tiebreaker against the Commanders, the Eagles and even the Lions. If they beat the remaining lower ranked teams and upset either the 49ers or the Chargers, they finish 11-6 with an even better chance of making the playoffs. Bowles would likely keep his job.

So far this year, the Bucs have beaten the 5th ranked Commanders, the 2nd ranked Lions, the 9th ranked Eagles and the 29th ranked Saints.

The Bucs lost twice to the 10th ranked Falcons as well as to the 17th ranked Broncos, the 4th ranked Ravens and the 1st place Chiefs.

Three of their four wins have been against teams now ranked higher, and they won all of the games against teams now ranked lower except for the Broncos who are ranked only one place lower than the Bucs.

From a cap management perspective and from a draft resource management perspective, they can stand pat and have a reasonable chance of making it into the playoffs in a year where injuries have been brutal.

In the 2024 draft, the Bucs went offense first. In the 2025 draft, they should be well positioned to draft defense first to meet their greatest needs at ILB, Edge and DB.

  25. Bigz Says:

    Lame.

  26. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Glad we didn’t trade and waste draft picks. Toad is our current coach. He could have all the 70’s Steelers teams and would have lost. Once we flush our Bowels and get a REAL coach who doesn’t f&ck up every close game, we’re in a different situation.
Anyone who defends the decision to kick the extra point, has an IQ no better than a January day in Floriduh. And I live in Floriduh.

  27. DoooshLaRue Says:

I think Jason may be a little nervous.

I mean he’s obviously wearing an ill-fitting bulletproof girdle under his tent shirt.

  28. Vegasbuccaneer Says:

Just fired Todd already damn it’s not that hard

  29. Pewter Power Says:

I’m convinced there isn’t a trade out there that could help Todd Bowles defense anymore

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Is it Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht’s fault the Bucs are 4-5 this season? Joe would argue that a blend of poor coaching and brutal calls by officials have cost the Bucs two wins this season.’

You’re making excuses for Jason Licht. Is it his fault we’re 4-5? Yes. We’re trying to play an 11-man defense with 8 guys. JL knew that Britt wasn’t the answer at MLB, yet he did nothing. JL knew that JTS wasn’t the answer at OLB, yet he held fast. And JL was the one who chose to not at least draft another CB after trading Carlton Davis to the Lions. Our depth sucks as result, and once the injury bug hit we were toast.

It’s convenient to blame Bowles for not developing 6th & 7th rounders (and undrafted rookies), but when those players are competing with 1st & 2nd rounders starting for other teams, the talent deficiency shows. I still remember what we went through in the Raheem, Schiano, Lovie & Koetter years … our record sucked because our player development sucked. Poor drafting & musical coaches don’t get you to the top of the mountain.

  31. August 1976 Buc Says:

When you believe that moves would give you a chance at deep run, you make moves.

Pretty simple, the brass at 1 Buc palace are showing their opinion for 2024

  32. Adrnagy Says:

Cb = Hayes and funderburk yes. There’s enough talent.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs made the big move at punter, I’m not sure you all are really understanding the massive impact that makes.

  34. Anon Says:

Outside of Brady playing GM, Licht has almost a decade of experience being a proven loser. Bowles is also a loser but at least he can hire a good OC that is carrying this team. Who has Licht hired other than a ton of bad coaches?

    Spytek Coen 2025.

    ——–

Actually the team had multiple winning seasons without Brady.

Also saying lets throw out everything good you’ve done, then judge you based on that, it’s a very stupid comment. If Licht didn’t build that team, Brady wouldn’t have come.

  36. Tony Says:

Remember IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT. That seems to be what we go by. Bowles does for sure. After awhile you’d think this would get a little old to them like it does to all of us.

  37. adam from ny Says:

bowles for prez or nah ?

    🙂

  38. Anon Says:

Just going by a decade long sample size of results Mr. Munch. Insulting me doesn’t change a large sample size of win %. But I understand why you had to go there instead of the facts.

  39. BuxfaninTX Says:

Shaq Barrett could be got cheap

  40. Tye Says:

    SURE!..
They just have a loser as HC!

  41. JA Says:

Who calls “Tails” on a coin flip?
0-2 on TO Tails calls. Of course the defense refused, in both OT instances! to give the offense a chance to win the game.
Know your team, and by doing so you know its weaknesses, and Bowles fails on both counts.

  42. Larrd Says:

    Please play Ramirez!

  43. 941bucsfan Says:

Lol thats certaintly not the message. Licht does not make in season trades… even when we clearly had no talent

  44. Jeff Says:

This team ain’t doing anything this year. Fire Todd, hire Bill B., retain Cohen. Bucs would be in the NFC championship in 2025.
