Bucs Pass On Chance To Win At End Of Regulation

November 4th, 2024

Todd Bowles

Joe would love to know what the Buccaneers’ analytics team advised after the Bucs scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter tonight to cut the Chiefs’ lead to 24-23 with 27 seconds remaining.

Don’t expect that to be revealed. Regardless, the Bucs passed on going for two to take a late and commanding lead. Instead, Tampa Bay kicked the extra point.

Keep in mind the Bucs entered the game converting more than 50 percent of their third-down snaps this season. And, the Bucs had momentum and were moving the ball well on Kansas City.

But Todd Bowles opted to take his chances on the road with his defense against Patrick Mahomes.

It didn’t work. The Bucs forced overtime, but Baker Mayfield called “tails,” lost the coin toss and Mahomes cruised the Chiefs to a touchdown.

Troy Aikman wanted the Bucs to go for the two-point conversion, as he stated during the ESPN broadcast. So did many Bucs fans.

It’s an easy second-guess. Joe gets that. But it’s extra easy because it was against the Super Bowl champs riding a 13-game winning streak. Damn, if you get a shot to grab the game by the throat, don’t you take it?

Not if you’re Todd Bowles.

  1. lambchop Says:

You know the offense, especially Baker, wanted to go for 2 from his reaction on the coin flip.

  2. RVATom Says:

I’ll blame Bowles for lots stuff. Going for 2…meh. high risk and the local Joe’s would tear him apart if it failed.

  3. firethecannons Says:

Ok so that is twice now that todd Bowles chickens out and goes to OT and we never touch the ball. WTH! anyway disappointed in in Coach Bowles only.

  4. MadMax Says:

I was saying it….go for two, go for two, go for two,,,,its KC

  5. Waterboy Says:

Right decision. If he goes for 2 and doesn’t get it there would be a whole different narrative this week.

  6. Mhystc Says:

Bowles wanted to put his defense out there.. and he paid big time.

  7. Will I am Says:

Yeah but they still had 3 time outs, they would have got in field goal range

  8. ghost Says:

high risk is mahomes with the ball in OT, they had a chance to steal the game and didnt have the guts. Then again, bowles is the same dunce who didnt trust tom brady with the ball

  9. rrsrqnc Says:

It’s the coin flip, it’s the coin flip, it’s the coin flip

  10. BillyBucco Says:

He couldn’t go for 2 after blowing the TO.
KC still goes for it on 4th and 1 with a TO and somehow we still lose.
Bowles clock management is Fing ridiculous.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am more upset Bowles called a time out giving Mahomes a chance to score. I’m not surprised he was gutless….

  12. Tye Says:

Going into a 5 quarter with the Chiefs was a bad idea…..
go for 2 was th right choice….
T Bowels is a LOSER and he coaches like one….
There will be quite a celebration at the news Bucs fire Bowels!!!

  13. Curse of Gruden Says:

Bowles making decisions to keep his job and not to win games.

  14. Waterboy Says:

How about holding them to a FG in a rainy OT game?

  15. lambchop Says:

    @RVATom,

Nah, when it’s Mahomes in OT, you have to go for the win in regulation. It’s a no brainer when the D is a sieve in passing downs.

Bowles calling that TO on the 1 is criminal as well. Chiefs just needed to get in FG range to win. If that would have happened, I think Bowles would be dealing with a mutiny.

  16. MadMax Says:

    We had this….

all good, no biggie…..lot of season left…..our guys did a fantastic job tonight…
    Valient effort my brothers!

  17. Hodad Says:

He wouldn’t go for it on 4th down either. Punted, and they scored the tying TD anyway, oh they went for it on 4th down to do it. You know Todd would’ve settled for the FG. Had to go for 2, had to try and steal the win. You want Mahomes in OT Todd? What a chicken little fool Bowles is. I hope the next coach the Glazers hire isn’t as gutless as Bowles.

  18. VOT Says:

Todd does not possess the ability to critically think while in the heat of the game – he has shown it a dozen times over the past 3 years – he makes more mental mistakes than all of his players

Our secondary mirrors his decision making – extremely unreliable

  19. Matt Says:

Bowles is as mentally weak as my 17 month old toddler is physically

  20. Anon Says:

People would absolutely not be crushing Bowles if they went for 2 and didn’t get it.

It was the most obvious go for 2 situation by every measure. Which is why the world was screaming for them to go for 2 well before they even scored.

  21. Curse of Gruden Says:

Ghost – you hit the nail on the head.
    I’m done for tonight.
Look forward to tomorrow morning’s news that Bowles is gone.

  22. Saskbucs Says:

You are playing a 7-0 team. The offense is the only thing keeping you in games and winning games. I’m pretty sure fans could deal with the loss if we were aggressive in a spot that no one expected us to win.

Nothing to lose and everything to gain. Soft. Embarrassing.

Put the pony package out there, spread 5 guys out wide and let baker make a play, something. I’m sure there is a play there somewhere that had a chance or at least would have let fans feel pride in going for it. Instead we tuck tail again and go out with a whimper.

Bucs better be on the league with a video package of blown calls potentially costing them games. That RT movement is a joke.

  23. unbelievable Says:

Bowles: “I had faith our defense could get a stop”

    You’re the only one pal.

  24. Mac Says:

Bowles sucks! I’m over this season. Just fire Bowles when the final seconds of the season finally come. He is there for his defense and the defense is trash. Playing your guys 7+ yards off recievers play after play makes no sense and never works. Guys are wide open all the time. Don’t give me the crap that we are injured so is every other team in the league yet they don’t have guys wide ass open play after play.

Grow some balls and go for two. We weren’t likely to win either way so why not shoot your shot right there. Could of changed the season.

They won’t fire Bowles at seasons end let’s be real and Coen will be a new head coach somewhere soon. I knew as soon as it got to OT KC would win the toss and score a td! Disgusting!

  25. Pelsbuc61 Says:

No. If he goes for 2 and doesn’t get it, that means he has the balls to do it. You have to seize the opportunity to steal a win. Instead, he does what he typically does which end up in a loss. Just once I would like to see some brass from the man!

  26. Say what Says:

Here’s my argument. If Bowles goes for two and misses, would he be criticized? I don’t think you can criticize going for two in that situation if the attempt fails. But if you kick the extra point and then end of losing the game, then you will receive the criticism and rightfully so. To me, going for two was a no brainer in the scenario the Bucs were in. Bowles did what Bowles does. He played it safe and I think it is a shame.

  27. Waterboy Says:

You all are used to talking draft picks in October but ready to fire a coach that consistently has the team relevant in Nov.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Could have gone for 2. If failed, could have onside kick attempt.

  29. MadMax Says:

Bye todd, its over….do it Jason!

  30. Oxycondomns Says:

what will bowles have up his sleeve for next week?

  31. Gipper Says:

Possible that Bucs win 6 of next 8 and finish with 10-7 record. This assumes ME back after bye week and can contribute. Not going to get any help from defense so Coen is just going to have to let Baker throw it 40 times per game and see what happens.

  32. OR Buc Says:

I was freaking out when the extra point came on. Sorry (not Sorry), but when the game is 1 play from a W, you go for that shiz.

  33. Saskbucs Says:

Team not prepared for a winless west coast AFC team… loss
Missed face mask and code turtle… loss
Play Evans, let the team get down after injury and interception… game gets away.
Try to come back and lose Godwin.
Can’t get the D scheme right vs Cousins and get torched again.
Don’t go for it on 4th downs and go for 2 to win the game… loss.

With stronger leadership and aggressive play calling, this team is 6-3 instead of 4-5. Todd Bowles effect. But we could be 2-7… good thing the players like Todd and show up half the time.

  34. OR Buc Says:

    Bowles with the gutter ball.

  35. BallHawk75 Says:

Bruce Arians unleashed this troglodyte on us.

And the Glazers are too stupid to know better.

  36. Josh Says:

I’m frustrated with the refereeing. It feels like the Buccaneers have been on the wrong end of questionable calls, or in some cases, non-calls, almost every week. The team should have gone for two in that situation, and there were several other decisions—both good and bad—that could have made a difference. The defense played well overall, but when it mattered most, they couldn’t get a stop. It’s been a season full of close games, with so many missed opportunities by just one or two plays. Normally I’m not this frustrated with a Buccaneers team but they just play good enough to give you hope every week and then CRUSH YOUR DREAMS…

  37. BillyBucco Says:

2nd year in a row losing 4 of 5 after a good start.
    This is Bowles MO
    He simply HAS TO GO.

  38. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    He’s got no balls.

  39. OR Buc Says:

I agree the wrong penalties have come at the worst times for the Bucs. #Getitright

  40. LANshark Says:

The BS overtime rules need to be changed… Each team should at least get a shot. This game was decided by a coin flip.

  41. Gipper Says:

Shame about ATL losses. Should have had at least a split. Beat Detroit, Philly and got KC attention. This team needs to find more defensive talent in a hurry. Hope we find out about Braswell soon. Azeez Olujari can help. Defense needs edge pressure.

  42. FortMyersDave Says:

A better head coach would have gotten 7 wins out of this team but Bowles is 4-6. Seriously, if the Glazers are serious about competing with the best teams in the NFL, Bowles is not the answer. He never was, heck the Glazers did not choose him to be their head coach, Bruce Arians did when he suddenly retired in Spring 2022, you would think that the Glazers have seen enough ineptitude from their coach who has zero accountability. They could make a move over the bye week after the Niners probably get CMC back and he boat races the Bucs’s D. Right now, I bet Bowles could do what Dennis Allen just did, find a way to lose to Carolina, that is how little he can be trusted. Glazers, make a move, if not at the bye, then on Black Monday in January and work the phones between now and then.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

    What a complete coward.

  44. Herbiebuc Says:

LETS BE HONEST TODD BOWLES IS THE ONLY COACH TO EVER GET JUDGE FOR NOT GOING FOR IT ! Literally 3 teams lost in ot this week after scoring to go to ot ! Nothing this man do will sastify these Bucs fans!

  45. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs’ success rate at 2 pt conversions this year has been 33.33%
Should they have gone for 2? Hindsight says yes, but comparing going for 2 with chances of Chiefs winning coin flip and marching down the field … tough call.
My take on this game is if Bucs don’t make turnovers and minimize penalties, they are as good as any team in NFL.

  46. Billyboy Says:

Tou pay baker all this money let him win the damn game!

If you bothered to watch the game, you knew there was a 0% chance that the Bucs defense was going to hold.

    Bowles is a coward.

  51. jugheadfla Says:

honestly if we are lucky Bowels decides to retire after the season so we don’t have to wait for Licht to pull the plug on this docile loser.

  53. BUC4L Says:

We played to lose and well that’s what losers do. Nobody will remember you for a morale victory. Bowels had his chance and showed no bowels. You are the weakest link. Goodbye. Go Bucs!

  54. mike noblin Says:

All you Todd haters are gonna puke if they fire him and coen doesn’t get the jo and gets fired to and we have to start all over again that will truly suck

  55. MelvinJunior Says:

You never EVER call “Tails” in that situation. Period. It ALWAYS Fails. Hell, how’s HE supposed to know that Baker is gonna go out there, & make SUCH a ‘boneheaded’ call like THAT!? Just typical Baker LoL. The bottom-line is (and I am NOT one who typically blames the officials)… I have NEVER seen such obviously BLATANT (and at times phantom) calls ALWAYS going in the direction of aiding just ‘ONE-TEAM’ week in and week out like that, in the HISTORY of the NFL. It has now gotten to the point to where the rest of the NFL has NO shot whatsoever. They are going to make SURE that the Chiefs are ALWAYS, at least in the game! And, when you get to the very end… FORGET ABOUT IT. It’s a WRAP. I have never believed in all of these NFL conspiracy theories, until NOW.

  56. Say what Says:

I wish people would stop saying the game was decided by a coin flip. It wasn’t. That is the way it used to be when the first team that scored won. Yes chiefs got the coin flip. But all the Bucs had to do to have a chance on offense was hold chiefs to a FG and they couldn’t do it. Just like against the Falcons. If I am not mistaken 3 of the last 4 times the Bucs D was on the field they gave up long touchdown drives.

  57. Hearty Dikerson Says:

    Flaccid Todd strikes again

  58. Buc-Up Says:

The Glazers have fired coaches that had actual winning records and won division titles with better records. Bowles winning two division titles with crap records when the division was crap doesn’t make him safe at all. He needs to go to the Conference Championship to keep his job IMO.

  59. Mike S Says:

Look, I told you this division wasn’t going to be won with a 9-8 record.

The Falcons are going to finish 12-5. Go look at their schedule. Could be 13-4.

I will give this ground – Baker Mayfield is playing out of his mind. He’s maxing out his ability. He’s a master at the dink and dunk game and with Bucky Irving running the way he is, it works.

Baker can’t throw the intermediate pass for shizz, but what he can do is three step drop and bang to the backs and TEs who are finding soft spots in the defense and getting YAC. You mix that with a top 5 running game and they keep the chains moving. Its like a high school offense, but only with a ton of rub routes and screens – and a quick twitch mongoose with a fastball at QB.

Baker gets the snap, plants the back foot and the ball comes out with conviction. When the defense draws up too close, he floats a deepish out to Otton or Evans (when he’s healthy).

It’s not a fancy no risk it, no biscuit complex route structure where the QB is playing games with his head and receivers are running patterns that force DBs to commit. That’s the kind of offense made for a 6’5″ Kyle Trask who has great vision and loves to push the ball downfield.

This is all pre-snap read on where the safeties are and Baker has totally bought in.

It was almost good enough to beat the now 8-0 Chiefs – but was that because of Todd Bowles? Or in spite of him?

On the road in a must win game to stay in the division, you put the ball in Bakers hands and go for two there.

He’s your guy right? He’s the guy you screwed half the state of Florida to get and you don’t put the ball in his hands? Going to OT against Mahomes on his home field makes no sense. When you have them teed up for a knockout punch you pull the trigger.

But this is what we’ve all been talking about since Bruce forced the hand to get his guy the job. He makes these mistakes.

You have to love the irony of football. The guy Bowles brought in – Baker Mayfield – the guy he HAD TO HAVE – is going to be the catalyst for him not losing his job at the end of this season. What are you going to do? Let Coen walk and break up this OC-QB combination?

How can the Glazers do that?

Bowles will make a very fine consultant somewhere next season. Maybe for the Bucs. I don’t think there is a better guy out there capable of scouting DBs. That’s the Bowles wheelhouse. Head coach? You can win football games with this offense. His record is who says he is.

What’s the chances they win the coin flip AND go straight down the field and get a TD with KC never seeing the ball vs going for 2?

  62. Bucben1961 Says:

Always go for the win on the road and a tie if at home…Bye bye Todd

  63. BAKERSBucs says Says:

T bowles was in a no win situation with the people on this site we played a seriously good game.Baker did his job so did the entire team they r worthy of some respect u people r really the 1 that suck sure it wud have been nice to go for the 2 point but that ain’t how it went so sad to bad give this team some respect they earned it WTF

  64. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Last time baker called the coin toss he chose tails I was surprised he did it again

  65. Brian H Says:

Todd Bowles, Todd Bowles, defense stuck tight,
Like diarrhea hits after taco night.
No plunge, no push, can make it fit—
It’s just one big pile of endless… 💩

  66. Mike S Says:

Baker #1 in TDs, #5 in yards, #2 in comp%

This is your guy – they guy you believe in – and you don’t give him the ball?

  67. FortMyersDave Says:

I wonder what Bowles record is in OT games? He is 0-2 this year and I recall he also lost in OT with TB12 up in Cleveland when he went turtle, first allowing Cleveland to tie the game on a 4th down when Vea and others were on the bench and then not allowing TB12 to try to win it in regulation. When will the Glazers realize that Turtle Todd is simply not a good head coach?

  68. Mike S Says:

    Bucs are #4 in scoring

    1. Baltimore Ravens (6-3)
    2. Washington Commanders (7-2)
    3. Buffalo Bills (7-2)
    4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5)
    5. Detroit Lions (7-1)

What do you notice about this list?

  69. Ed Says:

This is the time of the season where you simply cannot afford any losses especially with so many NFC teams with only 2 and 3 losses. The Bucs now have 5 and as they have already put on tape their defense isn’t capable of stopping teams on 3rd down and long and both overtime games they lost their defense folded.

KC in the 4th quarter and in overtime continued to run the ball right at the middle of the Bucs Dline and they just don’t have the beef or strength do hold down power backs in those situations.

This was not a must win game for KC but they won because they are mentally tougher and the Bucs didn’t take the chances needed to win on the road.

At the end of the season when the Bucs finish with 8 losses fans will be looking back at all of those losses and realize the Bucs were sloppy with ball, couldn’t make stops when the games were on the line and didn’t take enough chances to steal games they could have won.

This is a better roster than they,be had the past 2 seasons and common denominator is Todd Bowles not being strong enough to grab some wins that were up for grabs.

  70. Four Tuddy Says:

This is totally not fair. If they went for 2 and didn’t get it, which probably would have happened y’all would have complained. Either way, you wouldn’t be happy. I’m cool with taking a chance for overtime. Every time somebody messes up a 2 point conv people are jumping down their throat. Hindsight is always 20 20….

  71. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

So how many times has Bowles given the game away? At least three counting the Detroit game to end last season, and in baseball three strikes equals what? If some team is going to pluck Coen away let’s just make him our head coach and get Dennis Allen to be the DC or something ? Then we’ll get our defense back on track and see what the new head coach can come up with. We need sound decisions in tight situations like last night Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

  72. El HEFE Says:

Honestly going for 2 with the refs on Mahomes side smh they would have going a way to make sure the point didn’t count

  73. Chrisonthecape Says:

Wonder what the old coach in New England would have done, you know the one with 6 rings whose not coaching right now. But somehow Bowles still has a job.

  74. JD Still Says:

Well if you are figuring the odds, after scoring the touchdown , you would have have had a one hundred percent chance to get the first shot at winning , or losing , the game from three three yards away, 50-50 chance either you will or you won’t, if you kick the extra point , then you have to win the coin toss , again a fifty percent chance of just getting the ball first, if you lose the coin toss and the other team gets the ball first , your chances once again fall dramatically , they get the first shot and you have to hope you stop them, that they don’t make a lucky catch , break a tackle, or one of your defenders slips and falls on a wet , sloppy field, all things considered , IMHO, I think We would have had a better chance going for option one.

  75. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

500 Coach makes terrible decisions and I would have never been upset about going for the two points because I knew one you don’t want to give mahomes the ball and two our defense can’t stop anything all they do is look for KJ Britt and pass it to wherever he is. Let’s face it we’re never going to really go anywhere with bowels as the head coachcheck our record. I just hope they fire him at the end of the season and let’s find another defensive coach
