Can Bucs Receivers Beat Press Coverage?
November 4th, 2024It seems the Chiefs play pass defense the way Bucs fans want the Bucs to play defense.
For one, the Chiefs can rush the passer. Imagine!
Second, no soft zone for these Chiefs. They believe in getting in the grilless of receivers, so claims Seth Walder of BSPN, a man who never met a number he didn’t like.
The Chiefs will allow no more than one touchdown to the Bucs. I have a hard time seeing Tampa Bay’s offense succeed without Evans and Godwin. Its depth receivers will have to beat press coverage, but the Chiefs do that more than any other team in the league at outside corner.
Well, this tells Joe this is a game for Trey Palmer to break out. Palmer has serious wheels. He’s been pretty quiet this year.
The way Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen plays dink-and-dunk offense, it pretty much neuters Palmer. No wonder he’s been just about an afterthought.
But if the Chiefs press this much, to Joe that just begs throws to Palmer deep. All it takes is one mistake defending Palmer and he’s gone.
Why not throw deep once in a while?

I honestly don’t even think this game will be close tonight. Bucs just might lose by 21+

Chiefs average mid 20’s, haven’t passed the 30 mark yet
November 4th, 2024 at 7:14 am
I disagree Bucsfan! For the simple reason, the Chiefs are 7-0 and don’t need this win at all. I’m confident we can score points even without Evans & Godwin. The Bucs should be able to control the clock and time of possession if Baker can limit the turnovers. The latest Bucky Irving injury has me concerned because he’s the one moving the chains though. I’m still confident we win this one.

Seal clubbing ahead… KC 43-Bucs 20
November 4th, 2024 at 7:15 am
I think the tell of the tape will be Travis Kelce gutting the soft underbelly that is the middle of the Bucs D. Three touchdowns is no out of the realm of possibilities.
November 4th, 2024 at 7:17 am
how are they not using palmer on slants, and 20 yard plays a la justin jefferson routes…is beyond me…
he’s got the speed…can he not run routes…is it a concentration issue…?
there’s gotta be a receiver on the team who wants to blow up with mike and chris gone…there’s a slot for the taking for sure…but who will step up their game…………..is it jarrett time?

Be interesting to see how we finish the season knowing we can’t win the division, and we’re not a playoff team. We were wrong, the experts were right, Atlanta will win the NFC south. We needed to at least split with Atlanta to have a chance, and we failed to do it. Bucs will probably win 8 games this season. With only two years left on his deal Bowles will be gone. Lose the next two games, it’s really time to turn to the search for a new coach, and the draft.
November 4th, 2024 at 7:33 am
Should have beaten ATL both times but defense just allowed Cousins to have his way. Bucs are not a playoff team with a JV defense. It is not scheme, coaching or technique. Just not enough good defensive players. Going to have to spend off season trying to rebuild defense.
MaHomes will light it up over the middle tonight. Bucs only hope is to go to a ball control ground and pound to keep MaHomes off the field.

Dink and Dunk? One of the highest rated offenses in the NFL.
November 4th, 2024 at 7:38 am
Palmer and White can be game changers with the ball in their hands in the open field and Otton has been money.
Sadly our Defense will probably give up the booty again 🙁

Press coverage ?
No way, how we can abandon our precious 10yd cushions.
Honestly though i m tired to talk about this Defense. We see the same things over and over again and nothing changes. The coaching stuff think there is nothing wrong with the Defense and the scheme and the problem is a few missed tackles or a couple of plays we dont make. Not the 500+ yds of Offense we constantly give up.
Yes we have seen this Defense good in a couple of games but you cant expect a Lions game every week. We gave up 500 yds.
They had 7 red zone possesions and scored only 1 TD. Well done. But you cant expect to do this every time and believe you will hold and win many games. You win some but you will lose more.
It is what it is. I dont expect major changes.
Go Bucs

All the speed in the world doesn’t matter if you can’t catch the ball. Palmer tends to catch the ball with his body, but that only works on these touch passes not the Mayfield fast ball that is coming at you 90 miles an hour. Otton is just the opposite. He’ll catch hard throws but isn’t fast enough to get the big yards after the catch. I’m sure Coen will be using motion on most plays to keep CB’s from getting physical at the line of scrimmage.

Why don’t Bowles lay press coverage?
November 4th, 2024 at 8:35 am
Good luck with that. Palmer stinks

I’m guessing a 38-10 seal clubbing with fans jumping ship…

Chiefs DB’s play a type of coverage Todd Blows is allergic to. It’s aggressive, it helps their pass rush and causes QB’s to hold the ball a bit longer than they want.
Todd is baffled by this

Remember WAYYYYYYYYYback in the summer when Tyreek Hill named Mayfield as one of the leagues best????????
Well well we’ll here we are at the deadline and I can see a 🐆 on the horizon

45-27. Sad night as neither the offense or defense will play well. Hope I’m wrong but Toad does a poor job getting the team ready in big games.
As far as the receivers beating press coverage, I never thought Palmer ran good routes and can’t catch very well in tight coverage. McMillan looks like a rookie and not in synch with Baker. The guy doesn’t seem to have good hands. Miller is a 50 % type receiver. What 50% tonight is anyone’s guess. Shepard is the only WR that may do ok. Otton and the RBs have a lot of slack to pick up.
Defense is totally screwed w/o a pass rush. Britt isn’t covering anyone and if he is on Kelce it is a total mismatch. At least Tay Tay will be happy. The secondary will be more of the same, soft zone with huge holes. Look for open KC receivers and total communication melt downs.
When Mahomes decides to run, Britt and the Safeties will be giving up 20 or 30 yards each time.
Overall, this game will probably be over at the half.
November 4th, 2024 at 9:34 am
I watch Chiefs every weekend and I am telling you they are very beatable. The problem is we have no one that will pressure Mahomes. Mahomes will put the ball into play if he is pressured. Otherwise they will eat the Bucs alive with Kelce in the middle of the field and Worthy doing sweeps and just running past DB’s going down the field. Poor tackling by this defense is embarrassing.
November 4th, 2024 at 9:51 am
With rain a real possibility, regardless of Kansas City having one of the best run defenses in the league, running the ball has to be at the top of the list. If the Bucs can play some ball control and keep Mahomes on the sidelines as much as possible, that alone may keep Kansas City from hanging half a hundred on the Bucs. Either way, it will be a long night for Tampa Bay!

BakerFan, I totally agree. Although the Chiefs are undefeated, they’re not playing that well, at least their offense isn’t. The Bucs are going to put up points, certainly more than 1 TD. I can easily see the Bucs beating these guys for an unlikely upset. If the Bucs played the Ravens or any number of other teams right now, I would predict that they’d lose, but they can beat the Chiefs. LFG!!
November 4th, 2024 at 12:20 pm
Be nice if Baker and Trey came out hot, but unlikely KC is worried about deep passes.
November 4th, 2024 at 1:56 pm
If the Chiefs come out playing press man, it’s a simple adjustment for Koen With his playcalling.
He just needs to stack his receivers or even a bunch formation.
Also, he could run Short crossing routes were that natural pick happens.
Regardless, Baker needs to stick with the short, passing game for now and get White and Bucky involved and stretch this defense out horizontally. Once they start to do that, then they can start to stretch them out vertically as well with Palmer & McMillan.
These officials better have their Glasses on tonight because the Chiefs corners have always loved to grab receivers In their routes.

Ya know Buc fans, the excuse for NOT playing press coverage, according to our defensive guru TB, has been DB’s lack speed to play a man. My question to Todd and Licht is why the hell you and scouts have NOT been able to find or draft a speedy DB or 2 or 3 over the last 5 years. They’re out there somewhere. FIND THEM !! Plan B, teach our DBs how to play a zone!!!!
November 4th, 2024 at 5:23 pm
How about, can the Bucs defense cover anything? They can fall down and not even cover the grass .
