Todd Bowles Smells A Coaching Upgrade

November 3rd, 2024

Proud of his hires.

One of Todd Bowles’ most notable quotes came 20 months ago in Indianapolis.

Bowles backhandedly admitted he was looking for better offensive line coaching but added that his co-offensive line coaches were “worth salvaging.” It was hardly a hearty endorsement. Remember, the Bucs’ running game ranked last in the NFL in 2022.

The run game ranked last again in 2023, but was made public early this year that Bowles and the Bucs offered new contracts to co-offensive line coaches Harold Goodwin and Joe Gilbert. That passed and instead bolted to Carolina with former Bucs playcaller Dave Canales, and it sure seems like that was a blessing.

New offensive line coach Kevin Carberry is a hard-driving taskmaster, and assistant offensive line coach Brian Picucci has a similar reputation.

More important, the Bucs’ offensive line is playing great ball and is young and on the rise.

“I think they’ve brought a different energy, as far as what they do and how they teach,” Bowles said of his O-line coaching duo this week.

“‘Carbs’ is a tireless worker [and] Picucci is, as well. I mean, shoot, if Picucci’s kid was on the playground, he’d probably take him off and put him to work. He’s one of those guys but he’s a joy to be around. He understands the game very well. He’s constantly working and looking for angles – both of them are constantly working and looking for angles. They’ve been a big help.”

Goodwin and Gilbert helped deliver the Bucs a Super Bowl and they routinely had backups ready to perform, but Joe is darn glad those guys are gone. Their time was up and the Bucs’ O-line has hit new gear in less than half a season.

  6. Tye Says:

    coaching upgrade….
if it is not at HC position then the Bucs will continue to spiral downward!

Hahaha rod munch. Mr flowing locks. Weren’t you all about your flowing Fabio hair last week after your boi Winston finally had a good game? Is like a Kenny from South Park flow or more like that colorful Muppet on sesame Street?

Joe, I don’t know if it’s coaching that has brought the Oline back from the dead though. Have you ever worked with someone that you just knew was going to bring your group metrics down a few notches and in that, find it hard to really give your best because, well, your best will never do. But then, that person gets replaced and it’s like a new beginning and a new reason to be your shining best. That may have happened.

  8. Pewter Power Says:

I’m glad they are gone and Todd Bowles is next. Run game was dead last and he still offered contracts. If not for Carolina we’d have the same issue.

  9. Ol' Boy Says:

I wonder what our QB coach would think of working with Jamie’s? I mean come on, I’m chuckling out loud looking at his stats today. Less than 50% completion rate, 3 int and yet is able to rack up more yards than baker on good day. Good stuff, but he’s hooked on eating them L’s.
I wonder if coach Lewis would like to have a season With Jameis

  10. Dave Pear Says:

So, what about the defense, LOVIE??????

There is one common link to defensive futility. Look in the mirror.

  11. Buchen61 Says:

Todd’s not smelling what the rest of us are

  12. Chef Baker Says:

I’m calling “click bait” on this post.

  13. Jerseybuc Says:

When the Bucs upgraded from radio

  14. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Chef Baker it sure enough was! What we all get for wishing Blowels would be replaced since it’s needed.

  15. StickinUp4Centers Says:

get the equivalent coaches for the defensive line.

  16. Xristos Says:

Now if he could only smell that the Defense aint working.
Its not that hard because every QB is cooking it.
    Go Bucs

  17. Hearty Dikerson Says:

The fact Todd wanted to re-sign the run game coordinator responsible for the league’s worst rushing attack 2 years in a row shows all you need to know about him as a person.

He prefers whats comfortable over improving. He’s completely gutless. It’s a fools errand hoping he’ll change anything.

  18. Tucker Says:

A little troubling that it took them leaving for there to be a change to an deeply underachievering unit.

  19. Tony Says:

Hopefully that coach is The Rock because if that’s the case maybe HE CAN SMELL WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKIN.’ If he can smell a coaching upgrade. He needs to smell some change on D then.

  20. unbelievable Says:

    @Defense Rules – me too!

What a disappointment to see otherwise. Agree the o-line is gelling, but I also think our new scheme is huge part, especially in the run game. In the passing game, Baker is also doing quite A LOT to avoid sacks… making the o-line look even better imo.

  21. BakerBucs says Says:

More yards than baker in a good day WTF r u talking bout r u dumb or dumber in the movies u r a moron really u r a moron Ol boy UFI

  22. Architek Says:

So what about the rotten defense coaching upgrades….

  23. Dave Pear Says:

    Fire the circus clown.

  24. Julio A Cepeda Says:

Need upgrade on the defense side

  25. BillyBucco Says:

I think the O Line simply blocks better for Bucky.
Nothing like working your arse off for a 2 yard gain.
    Give Tucker more carries.
You wanna run the ball then do it.
Bowels has no clue what he is doing.

  26. Brandon Says:

Munch thinks Tucker is JUST a North-South runner and thinks of that as a bad thing. I’m pretty sure his football opinions are about as worthless as a Greg Schiano attack the kneeldown defensive playcall.

  27. Show Me the TDs Says:

    Headline is misleading.

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

I wonder if he smells his own Firing?
