Tristan Wirfs Compares 2020, 2024 Offensive Lines

November 3rd, 2024

Left tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Joe is on record saying this year’s Bucs offensive line is playing the best football since the line in the 2020 Super Bowl-winning season.

Even though that was just four years ago, only one player starting on the Bucs’ offensive line is still with the team. That’s current left tackle Tristan Wirfs. He was the right tackle as a rookie in 2020.

Last week, Wirfs was talking about how the line was playing. So Joe asked him to compare this year’s line to that of his rookie season. Wirfs said he couldn’t because it is so different.

Wirfs noted that in 2020, he was the young pup on a line that was veteran-filled. This year, he’s the old man.

“It’s completely different,” Wirfs said. “You have to look around our O-line room when I was a rookie. It was a roomful of vets.

“[Ryan] Jensen was in Year-[6]. [Donovan Smith] was in Year-[5]. Ali [Marpet] was in Year-[5]. Josh Wells was in Year-[6]. [Alex Cappa] was in Year-[3].

“You can’t compare the two just from the aspect of the amount of football the [2020 line] had played.”

Despite the relatively fraction of experience this year’s line has compared to 2020, Wirfs said, it’s are still getting the job done.

“It hasn’t bothered anyone,” Wirfs said. “They’ve handled [their jobs] like a pro.”

Wirfs praised the line for being on the same page and “playing as one.”

With Mike Evans and Chris Godwin out, Joe would say that the Bucs’ offensive line is now the strongest unit on the team.

  2. Win in the Trenches Says:

Pound the ball, take what the defensive gives you , Baker dont force it…they are not Mike or Chris…

  3. MadMax Says:

  7. El HEFE Says:

Robert Spillane from the raiders has an cheep contract and he’s pretty good in coverage and getting to the ball

The Bucs finally got rid of Harold Goodwin, who led us to the worst rushing game in the NFL, and brought in Kevin Carberry and Brian Picucci who are cookin’.

A lesson learned for Bowles to apply to his defensive staff but it’s too late to save his job. Bowles is way too slow in personnel decisions – not getting young players on the field, and keeping under performing coaches and players.

Let’s compare head coach BA’s defense to the current circus clown head coach’s defense. Lovie Smith II is a disgrace.

Absolute shame that Coen is showing he knows how to adjust to his personnel(outside of continuing to use White as rb1) and that he is getting the most out of his offense without losing stride and Baker is playing better than he did last year that all this might be for naught because the hc is a stubborn fool who doesn’t know how to evaluate defensive talent nor prepare what he has. This defense is a major part of the reason Baker is pushing when he shouldn’t. Our offense has to score tds every time it has the ball or we have no chance of winning

  11. Bartow Buc Says:

Wirfs is an awesome OT !! That’s why the OL helps the three headed monster Pound that Rock !!

    Go Bucs !!!

  12. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Has another player ever been a probowler at 2 different positions? Breaking new ground?

  13. Dave Pear Says:

Has another arrogant circus clown ever failed at the dual role of DC/HC for two different losing franchises? Taking one with the GOAT and a Super Bowl roster and giving the goat the only losing season of his whole life?

This is epic stuff. If there was a hall of fame for circus clowns, LovieII would be the inaugural inductee.

Over the last 4 games, Rachaad White has been averaging 5.27 yards per carry. I’d say I’d attribute that to Coen shifting away from zone runs and honing in on gap design runs which are the strength of this O line. The first 4 games RW was getting mostly zone runs which plays while Bucky was getting most of the gap designated runs
