Bucs Lose Greg Gaines; Several Starters Cleared To Play

November 2nd, 2024

Returns to the defensive backfield for Monday night.

So Todd Bowles fired off an injury report this morning as the Bucs prepare for their Monday night clash in Kansas City with the Super Bowl champs.

Defensive tackle Greg Gaines, who is a busy rotational piece, is out with a calf injury.

The Bucs have several banged up starters, all of which were in doubt to suit up Monday night. But Todd Bowles gave the green light for all of them.

On Smith, who was in concussion protocol, Bowles said that Smith cleared his tests this morning.

Antoine Winfield (foot) and Lavonte David (ankle/chest) will play. Back from a concussion (and very much missed) is rookie nickel cornerback Tykee Smith. He was cleared this morning, Bowles said. And left guard Ben Bredeson is ready to roll.

Bowles deadpanned on Winfield’s foot injury, “It’s sore but he’ll be fine.” When asked if Winfield’s foot injury was the same foot he injured near the end of the win over Washington, Bowles said, “It’s just his foot.”

Also interesting was Patrick Mahomes popping up on the Chiefs injury report yesterday with an ankle issue, but he is expected to play.

The official Bucs Saturday injury report will be released later.

Joe will add that Joe’s insider chatter says Sterling Shepard (hamstring) will play.

Upset in the making here. Mark my words

  2. Fred McNeil Says:

Bucoff, I hope you are right!

  3. Mark Says:

I hope you are right as well…another clown show loss and the term “free fall” will be widely applied to this team.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    Go Tykee Smith!

  5. Mhystc Says:

By upset, you mean upset fans? because we aren’t beating KC. As much as I want to, we aren’t. Pat Mahomes is 10x the QB Kirk is, who picked us apart.

  6. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Playing Zone Defense a majority of the time equals a guaranteed loss.

That’s our very simple formula for the rest of Todd Bowles’ tenure here.

Play Agressive Man Defense like 80% of the time, and we have a chance to win every game.

  7. It's Corn Says:

I feel like the Bucs don’t do a very good job keeping their guys from getting injured. Maybe they are all still trying to use that silly Tom Brady diet.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Losing Gaines is very bad (Vea played 73% of the def snaps last game, but that was 45 snaps & he normally plays 35-40 snaps per game, so not excessive). Gholston’s been hurting with a knee issue for weeks (he’s only gotten 129 def snaps all season, so he’s not really contributing much) and it looks like LVD is being slowed down by that ankle injury.

Three days until the NFL Trade Deadline. We all know what the needs are. Do SOMETHING Jason. ANYTHING.

  9. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Nice

  10. Gofortheface30 Says:

So are Antoine Winfield and lavonte David going to play like Antoine Winfield and lavonte david? It’s not just scrubs like KJ Britt that are playing bad. Those two have actually been objectively terrible. Wanna know who has given up the most passing yards on the team? Hint: it’s not KJ Britt. Is vita vea gnna make some splash plays? Shouldn’t he and Kancey be opening it up for YaYa and JTS for more sacks? How ‘bout Whitehead? Everyone has been SORRY this year from top to bottom except for Zyon.

  11. Beeej Says:

Forget where I saw the stat, but the only thing our D does worse than ZONE is MAN

    Joe says:

A legitimate question but I guess Bowles must be above answering it.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

Makes no difference. Chefs will prolly embarrass the Bucs, and Bowles will make some lame “communications” excuse.

  14. Dave Pear Says:

Bowles could have 11 hall of famers on his defense and make them play like this. It’s the scheme combined with no corrective coaching . Same repeated mistakes, same repeated results.

62 Chiefs points on the way.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Mahomes could be on one leg and throw with his teeth and complete for 400 yards against Tood’s “Cover Who?” Excuse for defense

  16. QB6 Says:

The reality is that any team can win on game day in the NFL…if the Bucs were able to pull off the upset and hang KC with their first loss, they will have beaten KC and Detroit in their home stadiums…not a bad resume and very well could propel and ignite them for the rest of the season. You would have to respect it….so this is a much bigger game than most think.

  17. SenileSenior Says:

Buc off, we can win this one. My gut says yes in spite of the odds.

    Go Bucs!!

  18. Badbucs Says:

How many holes in the defense does it take before Licht will make a move. What are they saving it for? Sure the season is young, all the more reason to save it while you can.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Overall, our Bucs never fare well in Primetime. Why, I don’t know. We all know they lose to KC. But I want them to at least show up and play hard. Make us proud. I’d hate to see us get a severe beatdown in front of a national audience.

  20. Jw94buc Says:

It’s a win win for me if we win we’re alive still. That’s means playoffs are still in reach. Lose on Monday. Idgaf Im looking at Bellichik to take over HC and keep Liam Cohen developing baker! Maybe it’s just a coping mechanism. 😂

  21. Jw94buc Says:

Sorry for Insinuating a swear word Joes!!! Was slightly distasteful on my end!!! Better than actually typing the actually word out I guess.

  22. Kenton Smith Says:

I’ve only been a Bucs fan since Baker got here. But I think maybe some of you long time fans are seeing something different than I am. In 2 years I can’t think of a game where we gave up at all. Last year we had the NFC North and beat Green Bay,Chicago, and Minnesota. This year we have beaten Washington, Detroit, and Philadelphia. We’ve had close losses, games we should have won, and a few clunkers. But I’ve never seen us give up! Nobody should be surprised if we win Monday night.

  23. adam from ny Says:

yes, math & science says we pull off the upset monday night

  24. adam from ny Says:

we must pick off mahomes at least once in the game…

    2 would be ideal

  25. Ed Says:

I’ll be happy if they just show up and cover some receivers

  26. Woodenman Says:

Can fire Bowels all day long we ain’t bring in Bill Belecheat.

  27. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Kc defense is tight but the offense is suspect they can be beat they have had many close games this year let’s go get them we have the personel to do it

  28. Dave Pear Says:

An offense of 12 year olds could score points against Lovie Smith II’s so called “defense.”

  29. heyjude Says:

Good to hear that Tykee passed concussion protocol and will play. Sad to hear about Gaines. Sounds like we are a little battered up though.

Doesn’t matter if Mahomes has an ankle injury, he had one in 2023 and it was taped up to play. Plus, he has had foot and toe problems before the ankle and still played.

Still hoping for the upset and win! Go Bucs!

  30. BPBucsfan Says:

Mahomes will be fine, will roast secondary, no trades to help anything and we lose by 20. The Chiefs defense is really good.

  31. Pappabill Says:

Why so pessimistic fans ?? Sure were 4-4 but we’ve lost a couple of close games to Atlanta but we’ve been competitive in all games but the Broncos…..if not for a couple of mistakes we’d be 6-2 and have a complete different feel….we just need to show up and play up to our potential and we’ll win…let’s fn go Buccaneers!!!!!

  32. Darren caputo Says:

This defwnse has been horrible this year. Too many 3rd down converaions. Mostly 3 and longs getting chewed up by tecievers and qb runs. D line in not great.

  33. ☠️cross☠️bones☠️ Says:

Licht will not trade for an edge rusher. Just like last year, we wanted another running back and got no one
