More Details On Why There Wasn’t A Camera On Goal Line At Dixie Chicks-Bucs Game

November 2nd, 2024

So it seems this story has legs.

We all know by now the Bucs were hosed out of six points Sunday when Antoine Winfield’s strip of the ball from Kyle Pitts’ mitts at the goal was ruled a touchdown.

The short answer was, there wasn’t a goal line camera and the camera angles used for the replay review were deemed inconclusive and the touchdown stood.

The lingering question is why FOX, which broadcast the game, didn’t have a goal line camera.

Joe wrote about this yesterday after Joe spoke with a Bucs suit whose job duties include working directly with the NFL’s broadcast partners. The NFL does not mandate the location of cameras a network uses on any given telecast.

It seems quite a few Bucs fans didn’t believe this story. Well, the daycare director of Awful Announcing, Ben Koo, ran a big story about this issue on Thursday.

It seems the NFL requested and received an agreement written into the recent broadcast contracts to add more cameras to each broadcast. The placement is not mandated, or as Joe was told yesterday, there is no “template.”

Awful Announcing also learned that seldom do games with a 1 p.m. kickoff have goal line cameras, whereas nationally broadcast games almost always hav goal line cameras.

So no, this is not an NFL issue directly. It’s a network issue.

As one can guess, the reason networks don’t have more cameras at every game is money.

Awful Announcing noted that BSPN broadcasts anywhere from 7-10 college football games with pylon cameras each Saturday. Why/how can BSPN do this and not FOX or CBS for the NFL? Simple: BSPN/Disney found a sponsor to bankroll the extra cameras. The NFL’s rightsholders have not (yet).

FOX rules analyst and former NFL head of zebras Dean Blandino, drinking buddy of Jerry Jones said recently on a podcast the NFL is “looking into” requiring the broadcast rightsholders to have all angles covered by cameras at all games. (Joe once witnessed those two, along with Jay Glazer, roll off the Cowboys bus barhopping in Indianapolis at the combine one night — Joe even tried to bum rush onto the bus but Cowboys security stopped Joe.)

Blandino said this issue of not having pylon cameras at all games has long been a pain in the posterior for coaches and officials, in particular Bill Belichick.

So no, the missing cameras Sunday wasn’t (fully) the responsibility of the NFL. It is currently the responsibility of FOX. That doesn’t mean the NFL is blameless.

Thanks for the last line. Far from blameless. NFL should have that mandated and all the networks should have a camera there. It’s ridiculous. It’s season 100 something in the year 2024. They can spot the neck tattoo on some guy in section 480 row V but they can’t see if the ball crossed the goal line in the half a billion dollar game being played.

  2. MadMax Says:

Robbed….Football God’s owes us Monday night….just watch….we’ll either lose big or squeak out a win….and knowing the refs wearing kc under those stripes….on any given Sunday or monday!

  3. heyjude Says:

Thank you so much for the investigative reporting. The placement not mandated and no template infuriates me. And agree, none of them are blameless either. It’s ironic that Sean Barie is from Fox and he was able to film the non touchdown. Shame on the refs too. We had a close game while being down key players. The Bucs got robbed.

  4. TampabayDJ Says:

How do they review ALL SCORING PLAYS if they can’t actually review them ? I mean, if this was the Chiefs or some other high profile team that got the shaft not only this game, but the prior game they played the turd birds, they would still be talking about it on every major sports media. But it’s just our Bucs, so we just have to eat it, even though the first game actually cost us the game with the non call and no review, which they are supposed to do inside 2 minutes left in the game. Oh well, Bucs are going to pound the Chiefs and give them their first loss of the year. Bucs have always matched up good with the Swifties. Our offense is way better, and their defense isn’t good enough to stop our Bucs offense. Chiefs offense is not even close to being good, so Bucs will out score and outmatch them in all phases. Bucs win 31-9

  5. Win in the Trenches Says:

    ISSS…. BULLSH$$$T……

  6. BucaneroJim Says:

No fair and balanced cameras from Fox?

  7. Todd Says:

They’ll have the camera’s Monday night…just in time for the camera catching what seemed like the winning White touchdown that was stripped and went into the end zone…but low and behold, the cameras caught what was a debatable quarter inch differential and the TD is reversed.

    Mahomes-field advantage for the win!

  8. ReeeBarrr Says:

On Amazon you can get two wireless cameras for $50.

    $50, NFL

  9. PSL Bob Says:

This is simply ridiculous. What are the most meaning plays of games? Touch downs! What’s the best angle to tell if a player scored at TD. A look across the field right down the goal line. Damn! Not that difficult! It’s just inexcusable. Until last weekend, I thought there were cameras on the goal line in every stadium for every game.

  10. Razor Ramone Says:

There will be no missed calls or funny angles on Monday night. Not for The Chefs anyways. Go Bucs!!!

  11. WilieG Says:

Poker is on TV a lot now simply because of “lipstick” cameras. They are small, unobtrusive cameras about the size of a tube of lipstick. As I said the other day, screw the networks. Install lipstick cameras all along the sidelines and have a referee sit in front of a monitor on the field. There would be no delays. And the calls would be more accurate and people would stop saying the NFL is rigged.

  12. Bucsfan Says:

Sorry Joe , yes it IS all the NFL’s fault as they write the contractual agreement with the broadcaster and could have simply written that requirement into the contract.

  13. ChiBuc Says:

Cameras are good, but couldn’t they also put a chip in the ball and install a goal line reader to definitively indicate when the ball crosses the line. Idk whether or not the technology is precise enough, but it seems to work for thousands of marathoners with chips in their number plates for exact times when crossing the finish line,. So, why not for 1 ball crossing the most contested line in sports?

  14. DungyDance Says:

I’m guessing the all 22 camera was also inconclusive? Someone would have brought it up by now if it showed something.

  15. Joe Says:

I’m guessing the all 22 camera was also inconclusive?

Don’t think the networks have (live game) access to All-22. Those cameras are NFL Films cameras, not network cameras.

  16. Conte Piscatelli Says:

So because Bucs v Falcons is a third tier game for the National media and the NFL we should be thankful the broadcast was better than a Friday night high school game.

  17. Biggun Says:

Officiating overall is horrendous! Every year there is something for controversy bad calls bad camera angles etc etc etc. It’s only obvious with the intertwined NFL and betting now every single call is important every single camera angle is important. Otherwise the games with these issues will be considered rigged. That’s why the NFL should NOT be intertwined with betting! NFL FIX THE PROBLEM so I can enjoy the games again like before this marriage of questionable continuity of businesses!

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Really does not matter. The Falcons own us this year. They have walloped us twice….Period.

Really does not matter. The Falcons own us this year. They have walloped us twice….Period” uhhhh No, Not “Period” you might want to look up the definition of walloped, Bucs should have won both games and you are saying they got ” walloped” ….. you are a idiot….. Period.

  20. heyjude Says:

Respectfully Mike Johnson, the Falcons do not own us. They were both close games with the 2nd one being without our key starters. The Falcons could have easily lost if the refs didn’t give them the no camera TD. Which wasn’t a Falcons TD at all.

  21. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Here’s how you fix this…
    SIMPLE FIX!!

NFL & station that covers the game SPLITS The cost of installing these cameras in the appropriate areas. ALL NFL GAMES SHOULD HAVE THE PYLON CAMERA FOR THE GOAL LINE VIEWS AND CAMERAS THAT GO DOWN THE SIDELINES FOR VIEWS…

This should be a freaking requirement in all games!

  22. Mike C Says:

Heyjude, WAY too respectful, dude is a clown tool troll, A IDIOT! no need for respect.

  23. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

In my opinion, the NFL is 100% responsible for this issue. It’s as important of a location for cameras as any and it’s something the NFL COULD take control of rather than leave it up to broadcasters.

With the billions of dollars of revenue generated in this business, it’s laughable that cameras along the goal line are not always present.

I have no idea whether the Bucs would have won that game if the 7 points gifted to the Falcons had been taken away, but those type of turnovers can dramatically change momentum and turn a game around. It would have been nice to see the outcome of that game for ourselves had the proper call been made.

  24. dumboldguy Says:

What money? It would cost less than $5k to have these at every stadium. Probably a lot less if somebody wasn’t bilking a contract.

  25. BillyBucco Says:

You can’t tell me someone like Elon Musk and watches football wouldn’t gladly foot the bill for cameras in an NFL football game. This is a lazy excuse from the NFL and purposely done so they can control outcomes. They don’t care because half the fans are always happy. You think the NFL makes more money when Tampa wins? Half the people in that city are from NY and down from major cities along the way. These markets make the NFL way more money, including Atlanta, who has not been relevant for a decade.
The chips in the ball is so obvious. Look at tennis. You hardly ever see Agassi type explosions for missed calls anymore. The science tells you if the ball is in or out. We have all the technology to make NFL games fair and take the guesswork out, but that is SIMPLY not what the NFL wants. PERIOD.

  26. AL Says:

If it’s FOX, then they’ll probably blame it on Obama like they always do.

  27. Landshark Says:

Why don’t the stadiums provide cameras? Hell, pay attention guy to stand there with a cell phone camera if they’re that cheap.

  28. Landshark Says:

Why don’t the stadiums provide cameras? Hell, pay a guy to stand there with a cell phone camera if they’re that cheap.

  29. Joe Says:

Why don’t the stadiums provide cameras?

Oh, they are all over. Not sure they would be “broadcast quality.”
