The José Ramirez Files

October 31st, 2024

Hidden Bucs edge rusher José Ramirez.

So the Bucs have developed what might be the best offensive tackle tandem in the NFL because, in part, those bookend beasts are challenged greatly in practice by never-see-the-field edge rusher José Ramirez.

Joe’s heard incredible things about Ramirez coming out of One Buc Palace. That’s interesting because the guy has played only 14 snaps of defense this season and didn’t see the field as a rookie last year.

Ramirez, 25, was a 2023 sixth-round pick and this summer he had a standout preseason that included a three-sack game. But Ramirez can’t get on the field amid a room full of edge rushers that have struggled to get to quarterbacks.

It’s bizarre. And Joe’s starting to wonder if there’s something happening behind the scenes. Does Ramirez have no value as a situational pass rusher? Is he that much of a liability in run defense?

Joe is struggling for answers. Ramirez has been inactive for most games this season.

No, Ramirez is unlikely to be a savior, but he could bring a spark.

Joe’s old enough to remember how, back in 2007, an edge rusher walked out of the Arena League and onto the Bucs’ roster. That guy, Greg White, proceeded to rack up 8 sacks and a ridiculous 7 forced fumbles that season.

Like Ramirez, White was a late-round draft pick (Round 7 in 2002) who never got a shot — until he did.

Yes, Joe is reaching for any and all solutions to the Bucs’ edge rush woes.

  2. adam from ny Says:

    and markees watts

  3. adam from ny Says:

    and me…

they’ve got me on laundry room duty and i’m not liking it one bit

  4. AJ Turn up Says:

Nothing wrong with that at all Joe. Why not atleast put him in a few snaps just to keep the starters fresh? Why not see his potential? He’s a no name to opposing offenses so he could fly under the radar and make plays. At this point I say again Bowles needs to let go of his ego and put in players and construct a scheme that benefits the players strengths

  5. Ds Says:

    Stylez white lol

  6. Kidfloflo Says:

Couldn’t u ask during one of the press conferences? Maybe they forgot they had him, and u would turn a light bulb on!

    and me…

I’ve been on dishes, tough scene out here

  8. Beejezus-belt Says:

His cover skills are horrible, and not a good communicator with coverage and other defensive backs.

  9. Pops Malone Says:

Because he has not shown the ability to be able to play in pass coverage and run with the likes of Tyreek Hill (or Xavier Worthy on Monday night) and cover him all across the field. That talent is required for pass rushers to get on the filed under “Coach Communication/Concentrations lapses” defenses….simple as that

  10. Beeej Says:

Clearly, you people don’t have your women trained up properly

  11. OrlandoBucFan Says:

He can’t be worse than what Bowles is putting out on the field now. Give the dude a chance.

    ^^^^^^

This is funny and sad. Bowles continuously drops our OLB into coverage instead of letting them rush.

  13. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles is feeling the pressure and he’s only going to play those that have mastered his miscommunication scheme. You see, Bowles putting in a pass rusher on obvious passing situations will ultimately tip his hand. He’s more concerned with his disguise wizardry than actual effectiveness.

  14. TruckerBuc Says:

Okay but can he drop back in coverage? *sarcasm*

  15. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd likes his edge rushers DEEP in coverage.

  16. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I am feeling the desperation Joe, but we badly need something on defense. I tend to think it’s a middle linebacker first.

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

You can’t call preseason games worthless then use stats from them to prop up a player when playing against taco bell cashiers and ups drivers.

  18. Pewter Power Says:

Come on he’s the Sean Tucker of defense. They hype these guys up all offseason, they ball out in training camp and preseason for absolutely no reason because they disappear during the regular season.

There is no pass rush why would it hurt to give Ramirez snaps or are they just gonna waste another year and follow that Kyle Trask developmental logic of no snaps his entire contract except the last year. We wouldn’t have seen Tucker if not for rashaad white injury. It’s just time to gut the coaching staff

  19. Tucker Says:

There it is Joe, bucs are not trading for anyone so what’s on the roster.

  20. BD Says:

I seen vita drop back in pass coverage …what can he do to cover anyone? Only thing he would be covering is the quarterbacks line of sight

  21. Buc4evr Says:

I thought he had some success when they allowed him to play? Can’t be worse than J T S.

  22. Kgh4life Says:

Ramirez and Watts are just jags, that’s it. If they were that good they would be playing simple as that.

  23. Teflon Don Says:

Had a season so remarkable he changed his name to Stylez 😂 good memories and totally agree Joe. Play the kid and see what he does in real games not just practice!

  24. BakerFan Says:

I really have no faith in the Bucs judging Defensive talent and then using that talent to the players and team strength.

Maybe it is time to quit all of the cutesy stuff and go mano on mano. That’s right you DB’s go Man to Man with some safety help over the top. Let Vita and all the rest turn their ears back and go.

This crap that they have been doing is sure not working.

  25. Christopher Schiefen Says:

He’s not good on special teams, supposedly. Maybe JTS would be and Ramirez takes his place, but this coaching staff isn’t that creative

    ___________

So he should fit right in.

  27. Rob H Says:

All these people saying he doesn’t see the field because he “can’t cover WRs” make me laugh! Really? A DE/edge rusher should be able to cover Tyreek Hill? Give me a break! Our DBs can’t (or don’t/won’t) cover a WR. Why the hell would we ask someone who has 2 jobs: get the QB on the ground, and stop anyone with the ball in their hands coming out of the backfield. Enough with having these bigs drop into coverage and expecting good results!

  28. Fred McNeil Says:

That’s a huge part of what’s wrong with Todd’s coaching. He is slower than molasses at making changes. Even if Ramirez stinks against the run they’re not gonna run on third and 15.

  29. Badbucs Says:

Todd is a master at outsmarting himself.

  30. White Tiger Says:

Hopefully the “reach” delivers! Starting to think Ramirez is the new “Mr August”…

  31. Bucben1961 Says:

The doctor tells you “you have 3 weeks to live” but he has a pill that might save your life or kill you in 2 weeks and 6 days.. what do you do,….you swallow the pill

  32. Usfbuc Says:

@Rob H – everyone is being sarcastic because Bowles drops his OLBs into coverage all the time. We all want the same thing as you, to have our edge rushers rush.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

If he can’t whiff on coverages like the other guys in cover 3, he won’t fit the mold. Tood is trying to coach incompetence at all levels. Wait, he’ll eventually be out there in the deep flat.
