Todd Bowles Shares Disappointment In Ryan Miller
October 29th, 2024There’s a simple, unwritten rule in the NFL when you’re a participant in what amounts to a 50-50 opportunity.
Catch it. Or make sure the other guy doesn’t.
Head coach Todd Bowles went there this evening on the Buccaneers Radio Network.
Midway through the third quarter on Sunday against the Falcons, the Bucs called for a flea flicker pass to backup receiver Ryan Miller. He had a great shot at the ball (photo above) but Pro Bowl safety Jessie Bates made the interception.
Great play, said Bowles. “But we still got to come down and knock that ball out of there. Miller’s got to get that ball out.”
It was the Bucs’ second turnover of the day. The first was an opening-drive fumble by Rachaad White, which seemed to have Bowles frustrated. And the head coach said he thought the third turnover of the day, a Baker Mayfield interception, could have been avoided if Mayfield put more air under the throw to Jalen McMillan.
In all, Bowles knows three turnovers like the Bucs had will get you beat almost every time.
“We can’t turn it over. We’re doing great things on offense. If we can cut that part of it out, I think we’ll be outstanding,” Bowles said.
Joe will add that there really was a fourth turnover: the mind-numbing fake punt in Bucs territory in the third quarter with the team trailing by seven points.
That was on Bowles.
The execution was so bad the Bucs snapped the ball cleanly and still lost two yards.

Liam Coen was calling plays like Bryon Leftwich against the Falcons
Mayfield threw 50 passes
White, Irving, Tucker combined for 17 carries
And they were running good
C’mon man

Men against boys…..really not much else you can say about that play. Who wants it more? not us!
October 29th, 2024 at 6:34 pm
Bad play call ,,, bad throw ,,, horrible Break up or catch attempt ,, decent WR knocks the ball down ,,, ME13 comes down w it ,,,
Was thinking about Schedule and we have had the first place schedule for a few years now , but this one ,,, we will have played 10 games and only 1 team ;Saints , have a losing record ,,, literally a really tough schedule , I see other teams playing Pats, Jets , jags , titans etc ,, we need some of those
October 29th, 2024 at 6:34 pm
Mike woulda grabbed it
October 29th, 2024 at 6:37 pm
Sounds about right. Let’s bash the 6th string WR…. How about the D makes a tackle, covers a receiver, sacks the qb or god forbid gets a turnover themselves? Maybe just maybe then our TEAM would be better instead of just the offense.
Bowles is now relying on Coen and the O to save his ass… where’s the f’ing accountability on the D’s side of the ball? Starting with the Coach followed by the D coordinator…..
October 29th, 2024 at 6:52 pm
When is the last time we faked a punt….not even we had QB /Punter Tom Tupa…..used to drive me crazy punting from the opponents 45.
What an awful play….liked the call but the play was a disaster.
October 29th, 2024 at 6:53 pm
Zilch accountability from Bowles for his defense yet he throws a #6 wideout under the bus. Novel idea Todd, how about bench the first player who misses an assignment for your D in KC and not wait until halftime like you did in the ATL game.
October 29th, 2024 at 6:56 pm
I still dont see the big deal. He’s trained to catch the ball, he tried to catch the ball all the way to the ground. I’m not mad he didnt try to knock it down. Lol. The DB made a nice play on the ball. If it was thrown a little further he probably would of caught it but I know placing any sort of blame on Baker is a no no around here.
October 29th, 2024 at 6:57 pm
That pass shoulded never get thrown there.. coverage was tight, fliker didn’t fool anyone.. Baker has to do a better job not forcing things… be patient, we were only 7 pts down…
October 29th, 2024 at 7:09 pm
Coverage was not tight. When the ball was thrown WR is one on one. It’s on the ALL22.
QB is executing the play as called and designed. The play design or McMillan’s route create a false appearance of tight coverage. It was a contested catch.
October 29th, 2024 at 7:26 pm
Thrown into double coverage
Baker trying to hard
Run the ball more
October 29th, 2024 at 7:27 pm
Maybe you don’t throw the ball into triple coverage to an undrafted free agent. If he would call out the catch and not the fact that the ball should have never been thrown he’s done as a coach. Come on you’re a defensive coach no one was fooled and there corners were all over it
October 29th, 2024 at 7:35 pm
I really don’t have too many issues with the way Baker is playing, but that was a stupid pass he never should have thrown. He doesn’t have Mike Evans making that play, he has some scrub nobody off the practice squad.
October 29th, 2024 at 7:43 pm
Beat the chiefs and we will all be wow,,. Can’t happen? Well browns can’t beat ravens either ,,, chiefs don’t want a wild shoot out ,, they want to beat us 27-13
October 29th, 2024 at 7:47 pm
When I played football if the QB hit you in the hands with it – I don’t care if it’s contested or not – if you can’t catch it you better not let them . I’m positive the receiver told Baker “that’s on me”. That said that young receiver showed up and played some good football. It’s just an experience thing. I bet it won’t happen again.
October 29th, 2024 at 7:50 pm
If the best the Chiefs have running the ball is Hunt I bet Mahommes throws it 40 times. Maybe we can pick him off a time or two.
October 29th, 2024 at 7:51 pm
I’m disappointed in Todd Bowles. Sean Tucker puts up crazy numbers and they have basically benched him. What happened to the hot hand?
October 29th, 2024 at 7:52 pm
Kenton Smith Says:
I’m positive the receiver told Baker “that’s on me”.

You really think some scrub WR off the practice squad is going to say, “you moron, you don’t throw that ball into double coverage.” Of course a WR, any WR, is going to say that. Just like at the end of the game Baker is going to always say, “that’s on me.” It’s what every pre-programmed dullard playing football today does, and it’s why interviews and post-game press conferences are completely worthless, because you already know what everyone is going to say.

Butt Muncher… Im waiting for you to answer the question… How many qbs have thrown 12 more tds than interceptions this year. Thats it…. Pull that qbr chart out of yiur a$$
October 29th, 2024 at 8:23 pm
*** because you already know what everyone is going to say.***
Especially the coach… “That’s on him (or them)”
Very very rare to hear him say “That’s on me”

Disappointed more with Bowles. Why isn’t he ragging on the pathetic players in the secondary like Funderbunk. Leave Miller alone, the guy has done less harm than Bowles defense. Even when the Bucs were winning I voted no confidence for Bowles. Poor excuse for a HC. Bucs are not going anywhere with this guy.
October 29th, 2024 at 9:24 pm
A bad throw and a practice squad guy up against Jesse Bates? It seems unfair to blame Miller but it is a good message to team—accountability, no excuses because you are young. I just wish he’d be that way more with his veteran middle linebackers.
I think they might beat Chiefs. They seem to be able to move the ball on anybody. They have also had close to the most injuries in the league and maybe the hardest schedule. The OL is improving.
Commanders, Lions, Eagles, Atlanta twice, Ravens, Broncos … all pretty good teams and Saints seemed good until Bucs broke them.
October 29th, 2024 at 9:27 pm
Mayfield’s fault
October 29th, 2024 at 9:36 pm
If you haven’t studied the ALL22 on that play, then stop posting.
There are little comments saying “double” or “triple” coverage.
The ball was thrown into single coverage and it hit the receiver in the hands.
The play was designed as it was and the WR and QB executed it as its designed.
The DB made a better play than both.
October 29th, 2024 at 9:50 pm
Listening to it on Sirius Radio, the play by play announcer was not for sure who had it. If the guy is suiting up then he is a pro. A pro knocks that down, been taught that since junior high. If the moment is too big for him, back to the practice squad.
BTW Watch More All-22 thanks for your comments. Guys on this forum are full of sh!t. That’s right I said it. FULL OF SH!T.

Is everyone on crazy pills. Baker has been making that EXACT pass for two years. It was a great pass. He put it in a perfect position for his WR to make a play. The difference is Mike Evans was not on the receiving end where he aggressively goes after the pass. Not some lame High School football player type effort! It’s 100% on Miller. Welcome to the NFL, it took a Pro Bowler to make an athletic int and there was not much wrong with Bakers pass. Not pick and say it could have been one yard deeper but Miller clearly doesn’t have the skill set to match up against Bates and Baker should NOT be required to change the way he has been doing things because it’s not Mike. You are in the NFL, make a play and prove you belong and do go down passively. D+ effort on a 50/50.
October 29th, 2024 at 10:45 pm
Regardless of whether we should have called a flea-flicker on 1st down, at that spot on the field…that was the call. The ball was thrown well for the play – because it was clearly going to be a 50-50 ball/contested catch. Bowles is right, the WR with positive body mass & position, is either to catch the ball, or make sure the DB can’t.
Period. Starting NFL receivers do it every game. They know who is responsible. Now, Ryan Miller also knows the importance of it (if he didn’t before the play).
The fact that it killed a drive and set us back, we got to teach a young receiver how to be a reliable target in a must win scenario.
It’s a win. This wasn’t on Baker, it was actually a well placed contested ball.
October 29th, 2024 at 10:51 pm
Nobody is even mentioning the missed block on Trey Palmers punt return.
Palmer takes it to the house if Miller doesn’t overrun the tackler.

Where’s Rod Muncher… Must be over posting on joebrownsfan. com
October 29th, 2024 at 11:11 pm
He’s right. 2 great plays by Bates but man, these guys don’t know he’s out there or could be in his vicinity? Gotta protect the ball especially when the scouting report says great hawk safety with mean punch.
Mayfield puts air under that 3rd one to damn near corner of end zone. TD. Poor throw, one of few, but bad timing for the Bucs once again.
October 29th, 2024 at 11:18 pm
Flea flicker/50-50 ball seems like a bad plan or something.

I don’t understand bakers decision making lately. Several picks have bin into double coverage not all his picks are his fault but most of them are. Hes got to play smarter. With as terrible as the defense is playing the offense needs to put up 30 pts with no turnovers. Run game is working and so is the screen game. Limit turnovers play smart and the offense can carry the team. Will get bounced in the playoffs if we make it but if the defense doesn’t get light years better 1st round exit
