“Baker Does Not Get Enough Credit”

October 28th, 2024

The boss of a hated Tampa Bay rival was talking today about the NFL leader in touchdown passes (21) and co-leader in interceptions (9), Baker Mayfield.

Joe’s referring to Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, the former Bucs head man.

Following his team beating Mayfield and the Bucs for the second time this season yesterday, Raheem didn’t hesitate to praise Mayfield as “fearless” and one of the NFL’s underappreciated warriors.

“The toughness and the competitive nature of Baker does not get enough credit, and he really has shown that throughout his time in Tampa,” Raheem said.

Of course, Mayfield and Raheem, the ex-Rams defensive coordinator, were 2022 teammates in Los Angeles for five games.

Joe sees a lot of fans clobbering Mayfield for throwing two interceptions in the red zone yesterday after throwing one in the red zone last Monday against Baltimore. He’s deserving of the daggers, but not the criticism that is going over the top.

Joe hears fans comparing Mayfield to the former America’s Quarterback, Mr. Cleveland, Jameis Winston. They’re likening Mayfield’s nine interceptions this season to Jameis throwing 30 picks for the Bucs in 2019.

Calm down! Mayfield is on pace to throw 19 picks this season (too many) but that’s nowhere near Jameis’ ugly feat.

Joe will note that the Bucs and Mayfield face Patrick Mahomes next Monday night. Mahomes also has 9 interceptions but only a paltry 8 touchdown passes this season. And he’s played one less game than Mayfield.

Joe’s not ready yet to freak out about Mayfield’s interceptions. Joe’s much more worried about the Bucs’ soft, soft defense.

  1. LakelandBuc Says:

    The problem is simple,

Baker Mayfield is the QB that replaced Tom Brady
So Baker has to better than good, he has to be great
If Baker had replaced Jameis Winston, he wouldn’t get much criticism

Because he would be a huge upgrade from Winston

But he’s a downgrade from Brady, so far

  2. Pryda30 Says:

The stupid picks annoy me but I think he will get back to clean football here soon or season is toast we need him to play at MVP level

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    What is that???

3 games in a row where he’s atleast thrown 2 or more bone head interceptions????

Yes Baker, ……you get all the credit for that!!!!

  4. Gipper Says:

Golly, Mayfield threw for 3 Td’s and 0 INT’s in Bucs first loss to ATL. Maybe the lack of defense in that game that allowed Cousins to throw for 500 yards and 4TD’s had something to do with that loss? Sorta of like yesterday in loss #2 to ATL. Mayfield performance yesterday absent CG and ME might be considered remarkable in normal channels.

  5. Ol' Boy Says:

Would rather hear accuracy than toughness…

  6. Usfbuc Says:

BM is playing very well. Three of his recent INTs weren’t completely on him. He is also rushing for 5.8 yds per carry. Looking forward to seeing what his stats are end of the season. Right now though I would say when adjusting for salary he is the best value at QB

  7. Lightningvinny Says:

Love the way he plays though,,, it’s risky,,, I think he will clean it up,,, but it’s that you have to press feeling cause you know you are going to have to score 35 to win. Plays with total heart and NEVER will be accused of making business decisions when he is avoiding the pass rush!

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

He took two unnecessary risks Sunday and it prevented the team from scoring the 40 points.

  9. Dew Says:

I just watched the game. We certainly had chances to win. Great effort by all imo.

  10. BakerBucs says Says:

even if he throws a pick where is the D. also 1 of those picks was a truck flee flicker that our receiver had his hands on the ball also

  11. Trubucfan Says:

I never post on here, but I read every story and all of y’alls comments! I am truly disappointed in the so called fans on this site!! Blaming Baker for the losses when you know our defense makes any quarterback we play look like a hall of famer!! Baker gives his all everytime he steps on the field. He might not be the best quarterback but he has more heart than anyone playing and does everything he can to put us in a position to win! Yes he has had a bunch of interceptions the past few games, some on him and some unlucky! I am glad we have him on our team! We are 4 and 4 with more than half a season left, anything can happen!!!! Let’s go BUCS!!!

  12. crasey Says:

If you can’t win after putting up 35+ the offense isn’t the problem.

  13. BA's Red Pen Says:

The Occult of Trask is never going away, these are the same people who tried to tell us all Timmy the virgin Tebow would be a great NFL quaterback. THE STUPIDITY WILL NEVER END!

  14. Lightningvinny Says:

Unnecessary risks? Without the unnecessary risks you don’t get the 3 TDs ,, you get 2TDs 1pick or 1 and 0 and you get a whole bunch of FG attempts

  15. Josh Says:

Bakers been great this defense is historically bad…

  16. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

This next game may just be that 56-3 laugher. ‘Smitty your doing a heck of a job’. We’re playing the undefeated heavily favored Super Bowl champ chiefs in kc.
We’re playing the refs as evidenced by all the bogus calls all going against us,
And we refuse to play our best running back in a meaningful way.
I wonder if Detroit ever benched Barry sanders?
This things got 56-3 written all over it.
    Lawnchair time.
    What a crock.

  17. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Baker did fine. It was a tale of 2 halves. Our first scoring drive was a thing of beauty. The mixing of short passes and timely runs was perfect. 16 plays and used up so much clock. Just what was needed with the stars out. Another similar plan on the next score. Why, oh why did they start trying 30 yard passes?

    This game was very winnable.

But……throwing the hail Mary out of the endzone was bad.

  18. ModHairKen Says:

All of the cooters whining about Baker can go to Hades. The Bucs are fortunate to have him.

  19. Bojim Says:

Baker’s our QB. Agree with Morris.

  20. FortMyersDave Says:

The defense is the problem and yeah, they could very well get embarrassed by the Chiefs for all to see. The KC defense is their strength and Bowles will probably scheme things so that Kelce gets 200 yards and 3 or 4 scores while the cameras show Taylor Swift cheering him on from the luxury box. This could get ugly but maybe, just maybe, the Glazers will finally decide to hold Todd accountble for the train wreck D and force him to implement more personnel changes.

  21. E big boy Says:

Ok JOE!! MY FAVORITE BUCS PAGE WRITER BY THE IN OF THE
SEASON YOU WILL SAY IT WITH ME (JAMEIS MAYFIELD)!!!!
DEAL OR I WILL HAVE TO EAT EVERYTHING I SAD PERIOD COME
    JOE WHERE U AT!!!!

  22. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Maybe he is pressing because he knows the defense is going to let the other team get chunks of yards and score at will…

  23. Dewey Selmon Says:

The ints suck but those pick 6’s that Winston threw were daggers.

  24. E big boy Says:

Ok feel ya’ll but it’s not just about the picks it’s his hole game
Man it just not a elite qb just look at his game you will see it.

  25. Pewter Power Says:

30 for 30 let’s not go there yet. I hate the interceptions but he’s doing good things. McMillan has a walk in touchdown once and pretty boy rashaad white tried to one hand a critical third down catch against a linebacker. It wasn’t all him but his stat line would have looked better. Only bad throw was that horrible flea flicker

  26. Gipper Says:

    _________________________________________________
You lost a little credibility somewhere when you described his “hole” game. When I was in third grade, we were taught the difference between hole and whole.

  27. Fred McNeil Says:

The ints are concerning, but Baker can’t subscribe to the “live to fight another day” doctrine. That atrocious defence means he must score on practically every single drive because the other team certainly will. I mean: I wouldn’t expect a kiss if I were him, but I can see where the urgency comes from

  28. Wild Bill Says:

Two losses to the division leader means the Bucs can only get in the playoffs by winning more games total than the Falcons who look like the team to beat.

  29. Oscar Says:

Thursday night football, Vikings-Rams early 3rd quarter, Rams with the ball at approximately midfield, Stafford throws an out route to #15, I think that is Robinson. Ball is 10 yards overthrown and is picked off. Vikings take it down and get a field goal 17-14 Vikes. Rams give up another field goal later but go on to win 30-20 thanks to their defense and the bad pick by Stafford is forgotten. That’s what good defensive play can do for you. It’s called complementary football. Stafford went on to make some very good throws to get the Rams to 30 points and the defense did their job as well. We need good play from all three facets to have consistent success.

  30. Lightningvinny Says:

I’m sure you put baker on the chiefs and they are 4-4 and Mahomes here and we are undefeated ,,, elite is a funny word cause you got Mahomes and then Allen/Jackkson,, and then ??!! So I’ll take tied for 5 w 5 others ( I keep trying to put JB up there cause of reputation

  31. Wild Bill Says:

Sad to say but I doubt that Baker is consistent enough to over come the Bucs lousy defensive play. Baker tends to be inconsistent and needs a solid defense to keep him in contention.

  32. Trask To The Future Says:

I’m still waiting for the day the Joes do a FAIR ANALYSIS of Mayfield’s play.

This has nothing to do with Trask but simply what Mayfield has done.

Last season he had terrible QBR for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters of the season on average. Only his 4th quarter QBR put him middle of the pack with starting QBs. The stats show that much of his numbers that led to those better 4th quarter ratings were in garbage time.

Mayfield is doing it again. Look at his yards & TDs based on game score at the time. He regularly racks up 35%+ of his total game yards in the 4th quarter, often when we’re down 2 scores. He did it that in multiple games this season. But no one wants to talk about it.

How come he seems to have downfield accuracy issues, but no one wants to talk about it?

  33. Bakerfan Says:

I listened to the Baker interview after the game. It seems that the Bucs are ready for whatever the Falcons threw at them Defensively. He stated that the one interception happened because the defender was out of position.

So I think he needs to trust what he is seeing given limited time he is afforded not where he thinks defenders should be.

I don’t know but he is better than the nonsense throws he has thrown the few games.

  34. Gipper Says:

    Oscar,
Your comments are way to rational and they are appreciated. Welcome to this blog where many of the bloggers are bed wetters who complain about everything.

  35. Razor Ramone Says:

Baker is not the problem. He will fix it. The defense? Spell UP backwards!

  36. Rod Munch Says:

I think Raheem was talking about credit for helping the Falcons win.

  37. E big boy Says:

GIPPER SAYS : TALK FOOTBALL MAN AND STOP TRYING TO BE A ENGLISH TEACHER U UNDERSTOOD WHAT I SAID. SMH SOME PEOPLE SMH !!!!!

  38. Buc Fever Says:

Man….if Godwin or Evans was in that sick Flea Flicker would have been caught instead of intercepted. hes doing what he can with a soft defense and missing the best WR Duo in the league. hes doing just fine.

  39. E big boy Says:

Back to football baker bumfield is not the one real talk where we going with his type of play!!!!

  40. Weebs10 Says:

Complaining is the only language some of our fans know. Baker isn’t perfect but he’s an absolute joy to watch compete. Glad he’s our qb!!

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Baker’s QBR this year, 55.9, which is 16th in the NFL
Baker’s QBR last year, 55.1, which is 18th in the NFL

A bunch of 5 yard passes that your elite WR’s turn into 55 yard plays doesn’t make you elite. Just like throwing it out of bounds to end a game doesn’t make you elite.

If people didn’t say stupid stuff like Baker is elite, he’s better than Mahomes, he’s better than Drew Brees, he’s going to win the MVP, then you really wouldn’t get a lot of pushback.

Baker is good at what he’s good at, and that is moving around in the pocket, keeping plays alive, and throwing it under 10 yards. Coen has done a fantastic job of catering the offense around what Baker is good at. But these last few weeks, Baker has made some really really stupid decisions, hopefully he cuts those back. Even if Baker can’t throw accurately down the field, you still need to take shots to keep the defense honest, but just take those shots when guys are double or triple teamed – or throw 50/50 balls with scrub WRs.

  42. E big boy Says:

I see where you coming from it’s just time to go get our qb
Of the future his needs to on the team playing or not!!!!

  43. White Tiger Says:

You’ve got 2 new starting receivers, and a rotation of others who were backups or practice squad guys. You take chances with guys that aren’t ready for prime time, you get burned.

  44. E big boy Says:

He needs to be on the team ready!!! (Gipper) I Know!!!!

  45. Bucben1961 Says:

It’s not Monday without the queen of the Baker deranged syndrome crowd Rod Muncher giving us his absolutely useless commentary.

  46. E big boy Says:

Yea that made no sense!!!! on that note good night real buc fans u know who u are!!!!!

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Bucben1961 – Yeah, I said Baker is good at what he’s good at, but he isn’t league MVP … that’s some big time hater material.

That’s what I mean by Baker Boi(s) having a mental disorder. Not sure what it is, if it’s a creepy man-on-man attraction thing with for Baker, or these nutjobs think Baker is their friend because they see him in commercials, but it’s clearly some sort of mental instability for certain.

  48. Bucben1961 Says:

    Rod Muncher…smooth move exlax
..nobody here calling Baker MVP so quit rewriting history…but you did come straight out insinuate Jamie’s was a better clutch QB than Baker and it’s a long pattern of trashing Baker regardless of his play on the field. I don’t think you bring anything of substance to the table and stand by my earlier comment

  49. Bucben1961 Says:

Oh and butt Muncher name all the QBs who have thrown 12 more tds than interceptions this year

  50. Wild Bill Says:

Look a Baker’s entire career. Not a pretty sight. Last season was his best by far but only tied for first in the division ( one of the weakest divisions). I don’t hate on Baker. He gives his all. And the Bucs have significant problems beyond Baker. Coaching and injuries and Baker inconsistency all add up.

  51. MelvinJunior Says:

I think he get just the exact perfect right amount that he deserves. I don’t see where he has deserved any more or less than what he is currently getting. He just is what he is. Nothing spectacularly ’special’ – Nothing God awfully bad. He actually, gets quite a bit… Especially, for what he is.

  52. MelvinJunior Says:

Wonder how many ‘picks’ Jameis had through 8-games that year… Seems like, I remember him just absolutely imploding during the second half of that season, where he threw the majority of his!? I’m not sure. Baker better clean it up though, or believe me, it can really get away from him too, & QUICK.

  53. E big boy Says:

MELVINJUNIOR!!!!! REPECT BROTHER AND WELL SAID!

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Joe hears fans comparing Mayfield to the former America’s Quarterback, Mr. Cleveland, Jameis Winston.”

I may be wrong here…but didn’t one of the Joes post that?

  55. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Yup, my name links to it.

  56. Dave Pear Says:

He has to drag along a team who has tuned out the head coich. That’s a huge burden. And then, knowing that his defense is gonna have some form of rrhea on every opponent drive. He knows that if he doesn’t score a touchdown every drive he’s gonna lose. What a great situation – but he’s fighting and giving the team a chance. If he just had a regular rotten defense he’d have two more wins.

    Bloweszo must go.

  57. Nicholas Carlson Says:

    19 is a lot.

  58. Dave Pear Says:

Baker knows Todd’s defense is gonna allow 400-500 yards passing every game, and allow 35+ points every game. He’s taking chances because he feels he has to thanks to Cover Who? Defense ruined by the fraudulent imposter wasting two coaching spots on the Bucs.

  59. Pewter Power Says:

Baker knew what we knew! This defense is trash and we have to score 50 without Chris and Mike to win a game. Monday night they will see a real defense, dunk and dunk won’t work.

  60. Dave Pear Says:

Todd is great. Todd is good. Todd bless the Bucs.

  61. 1#bucsfan Says:

JOE all im saying is that the defense is so trash we can’t overcome turnovers. He’s got to make better decisions. I’m not callling for trask to start baker is our guy. I don’t see the defense getting better. More realistically is baker not turning the ball over. Quit throwing into double coverage. It’s one thing if it’s ME13 or Godwin but it’s not them. Take what the defense gives ya or scramble. He’s bin killing it with his legs.

  62. Usfbuc Says:

Just look at real stats, QBR is a terrible stat and not really that great of a stat to cite. BM had the highest QBR in the NFL in our first loss to the Falcons. QBR also calculates sacks into their system so in the games where BM gets sacked 7 times each sack lowers his QBR.

  63. White Tiger Says:

NOT a fan of firing the head coach

    Bet Baker isn’t either.

  64. Red86 Says:

Sad thing about this. Both things are true. Defense sucks. Mayfield picks aren’t helping the team win by putting the horrible defense back on the field. Not having ME and CG isn’t an excuse anymore. Every team has injuries now. Which is why I and many said it was stupid to try to win with a horrible defense being down 34-10 versus the Ravens in the 4th quarter. There’s only 15 minutes quarters. The Ravens on average took 3 mins to score that game. While it took anywhere to 5 minutes for us to score in the first quarter to nothing at all in the 2nd and 3rd. Finally, scoring within 3 minutes in the fourth. Just to lose by 10 and losing a starter unnecessarily. Defense always gets worse in the 3rd and 4th. The odds were completely against us at that point. Get the backup reps and rest the starter for the Falcons. The Falcons game is more important playoff wise.

To fix this, it would be wise to slow the game down and focus on time of possession. This keeps our defense off the field for as long as possible, while Mayfield will be required to be very sharp and methodically move the chain and score.

  65. unbelievable Says:

A couple more recent ones have been bad but truth is ATL didn’t score after either. They did however score after the White fumble and the fake punt disaster.

As for slowing down / time of possession on offense, we’re already doing fine:

    – We won time of possession vs ATL, by about 5 minutes, and lost.
    – Against BAL, we had 10 minutes more TOP, which is huge, and still lost.

We have to turn drives into points. 7 to be specific. THAT is the problem with the red zone turnovers.

Other fun facts about the recent ATL game:
    – we had more yards (432 vs 394)
    – we had more first downs (24 vs 20)
    – we were better converting 3rd downs (64% vs 50%)
    – but we had 3 turnovers (plus fake punt failure). They had 0

  66. Steven007 Says:

His two interceptions yesterday actually netted two points for us and no points for the falcons. Can think of bigger problems.

  67. Dave Pear Says:

Steven 007 – bigger problems indeed. Starting with the circus clown overseeing the defense, who reports to himself overseeing the whole team. Offense must love their circus clown.

  68. Hodad Says:

The problem for Baker is he has no room for error. He doesn’t have a defense that has his back. They try, I guess, but they’re a bad unit. Not a good look for a defensive genius head coach.

  69. heyjude Says:

Raheem is correct, “Fearless and one of the NFL’s underappreciated warriors.” Baker has persevered through a lot. He gets knocked down, brushes himself off, and gets back up. We are lucky to have him.

Agree with Hodad, unbelievable, and others. Injuries and refs aren’t helping either. With all that, our losses to the Falcons were very close.

  70. Buc2Blame Says:

Enough credit for messing up this team

  71. Falconrap Says:

First and foremost, the defense is clearly the main issue with this team. No doubt. But Baker is still the same guy some of us have been repeatedly telling you all about. The dude can’t even accurately place a hail Mary pass, from 35 or so yards out, in the field of play. He threw the ball out of bounds preventing us from having a chance. His picks were all poor throws regardless of what he says. He misses guys short or long on deep passes all the time. Go back to the Ravens game where he throws that first TD pass to Evans behind and low forcing Mike to contort to get the ball, tweaking his hamstring. It’s frustrating to watch this crap game in and game out. He may have a stronger arm than Trask, but he’s not nearly as accurate and Trask can throw a dime with 60 yards of air under it, so he’s not exactly weak.

You all can just keep bow before the mighty Baker, the rest of us will just keep lamenting the wasted second round pick to watch a guy that’s only great for a handful of games every season and mediocre for the majority.

  72. Buchen61 Says:

Some many retards on this site.. unbelievable

  73. Couch Fan Says:

Always comical to see the Baker Cult angry after one of his many bad games. Blaming everybody but ole Baker himself. LMAO. Anyways. Baker or not, ReTodd Bowles needs to go before anyone else. Worst coach in the league and its not even close.

  74. Scotty Mack Says:

The Bucs are a few points away from being the top scoring team in the NFL (one point away from being #2). Only the Carolina Panthers have given up more points than the Bucs.

Yeah, Baker is the problem [insert eye roll here].

  75. Mike Says:

Backfield to 15 yards best qb but 20 and beyond one of the worst. Quit bringing up trask he didn’t play, you must be intimidated by trask I guess, Quit blaming the defense they wasn’t on the field when your boy, mediocre baker throwed the interceptions and over threw receivers, look at every team he has played on same sad mediocre baker.

  76. Christina Bucsbabe Says:

The first comment said he’s a downgrade from Brady as if there were an upgrade somewhere lol Hey bandwagons, stop with the Baker hate! He see”s it and we are lucky AF to have him.
