Chip Challenge Is Stumbling Edge Rushers

October 28th, 2024

Maybe someone can call in Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett for a consultation.

Bucs edge rushers are struggling. It’s been an ongoing issue in 2024.

Starters YaYa Diaby and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (shown above) have three sacks combined, and their backups aren’t making anyone scream for them to be replaced.

Tryon-Shoyinka has taken a significant step backward this season, as has Diaby, though Diaby started from a higher plane and is getting more attention from defenses than Tryon-Shoyinka.

Regardless, edge rusher has been a problem through half a season.

Head coach/defensive guru Todd Bowles offered a reason today for the outside pass rush woes this season.

Per Bowles, his edge rushers are struggling with overcoming chip blocks from tight ends or running backs.

“I think our edge guys got to be better at understanding getting chipped and still understanding how to pressure the quarterback. They’re letting them chips knock them off their game a little bit,” Bowles said. “And [they] get a little frustrated trying to force things. We got to do a better job of gaming it, and we got to do a better job of learning when to get off the chip blocks.”

Joe is almost speechless. Week 8 is in the books and Diaby and Tryon-Shoyinka have played a ton of snaps. Backup Anthony Nelson is a sixth-year veteran with lots of experience. Joe doesn’t think chip blocks should be a major issue for these players.

Joe mentioned Barrett because he obviously had massive experience when it came to handling major attention from offensive lines. The Bucs no longer have a guy in their outside linebacker room that can counsel players like Shaq could and would.

Did anyone see the chiefs newest addition for 6th rnd pick? wth????

  2. JimBobBuc Says:

I call BS. I don’t see these guys being chipped much. They have no secondary moves because the DL and OLB coaching is nonexistent. Is Jose Ramirez hurt? Put him in there on passing downs.

  3. yup Says:

    very little chips taking place…

Offenses chip DEs when they are unstoppable… not when you dont need to worry about them.

  4. GoneGator Says:

Seems like all our edge guys get escorted around edge…. They’re not getting enough “bend” and as others have pointed out all our rushers seem to have 1 move.

    Depressing

  5. LakelandBuc Says:

CJ Brewer only had a handful of snaps against the Falcons

He still got 2 sacks from the DE position

Yaya and JT are major disappointments

  6. JC Says:

Um, the real problem as has been pointed out time and again is that these guys aren’t rushing half the time—they’re being dropped into coverage. To help cover for guys like Britt? Whatever the case, they aren’t being developed or utilized to their talents. I saw on another site someone criticizing Licht for drafting these guys, but he drafted them for Bowles and his scheme; it’s as much Bowles’ fault for not developing and putting these guys in a position to succeed. Oh, and Uche was traded to the Chiefs for a 6th rounder!!!!!

  7. Eckwood Says:

These guys are not developing NFL strength…… JTS just needs to be cut , he doesn’t like football and the stats don’t lie ……… He Just Simply CanNot be allowed to continue the privelage of being on an NFL roster ……… no matter his athleticism he has a lawn bowling / ballerina mentality!! The glaziers or Jason Light need to step up and send him down the road. He is a cancer to the whole team. They see him on film at least three times in this past game he was in position to make a tackle and refused to go into contact………… Let him go play with his arm sleeves and make up elsewhere !!

  8. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Nelson, Tryon should have a clear understanding on what to expect. I am not buying it and as for Diaby it’s the lack of ability to bend and disengage without using brute force. Braswell has shown some burst but he will need some time to develop. The interior pass rush has been getting squeezed due to the inability to rush from the outside. Facts are the facts. We need a legit outside pass rusher. Diaby has way too much upside and so far he has been very good in the run game. As much as I love the upside of Tryon because of his athleticism, he’s just not cut out to be an every down player.

  9. BPBucsfan Says:

One Buc isn’t worried about edge rusher. They could’ve had Montez Sweat last year for a 2nd round pick. I just heard commentary this morning about how he’s tiring it up over there in Chicago.

  10. BPBucsfan Says:

    Tearing it up

  11. LakelandBuc Says:

Yaya is a third round draft pick, he was drafted to be a rotational pass rusher. JTS is a different story, the Bucs spent a first round draft pick on him to be JPP successor. But Yaya outplayed JTS as a rookie, and took his starting job. When the Bucs released Shaq Barrett, they moved JTS back into the starting lineup. And they drafted Chris Braswell to be the rotational pass rusher, along with Anthony Nelson.

And Licht signed Randy Gregory to be part of the rotation

The problems are Gregory never showed for camp
JTS haven’t been a productive starter
Nelson, Braswell haven’t had any impact as rotational rushers
And Yaya gets lot of pressure, but rarely get sacks

    It’s a underperforming position
And it’s a position of need

  12. DJB Says:

Diaby is being exposed this season because he is now being game planned for. He has plenty of brute strength, but no quick twitch, lean or really any signature moves.

  13. rrsrq Says:

it was really basic, the problem was they were trying to go around the tackles every time, if Diaby or JTS would have bull-rushed, but you have to know how to get leverage, they would have been in Cousins face all day. they were close but on the back side of the QB, did not see one bull rush, not even up the middle.

  14. Bucamania Says:

Total BS. I watch these guys rush every game and it’s the same thing. Tackles mauling them. No chip needed. JTS literally does the same speed rush every snap.

  15. RagingBrisket Says:

The talent on this team is way overrated along with the accomplishments of the GM responsible for employing the overrated talent. Coaching can only mask so much. Look at all the capital wasted on this defense. Countless high value disappointments from Devin White to JTS to Logan Who. Kancey is just a guy and Vea is too often injured. We haven’t had a decent pass rush since JPP and Suh were on this team. Maybe the GM can take some responsibility here. The failures to acquire quality talent are glaring for those that choose to look at it.

  16. Show Me the TDs Says:

I watched the edge rushers during the game. They get push up the field, then wave at the opposing QB as they go flying past. Play after play after play.

  17. ChiBuc Says:

Uhhh, shouldn’t coaches be coaching this in preseason? REALLY, most of these guys have been playing ball since they we 6 yrs old and at an elite college /nfl level for at least 4 yrs. Todd must not own any mirrors in his house….what a bunch of bs

  18. ChiBuc Says:

Cheetahs vs Lions. These cheetahs are fast, but don’t stand a chance against lions.

  19. Hodad Says:

Don’t believe your lying eyes believe Bowles, they’re getting chipped! Whether JTS, or YaYa drop in coverage, or rush the passer, they’re bad at both. Combine that with a scheme that the league has figured out, and you get lame excuses like this one. Time will tell. Last year they came out of their swoon, maybe Todd can pull another rabbit out of his hat. With only two years remaining on his deal I don’t see him surviving with a below .500 record.

  20. Adam Says:

Licht is an average GM… been saying it for years. His inability to learn from his mistakes is astounding. Drafting trask in an all in year, kickers, punters, and small school lineman. He’s stubborn.

I for one believe he was pushed outside his comfort zone by Arians when we picked up guys during the run. You know the names.

Now we’re back to celebrating the same mediocrity we got in his first 5 years as GM when the joes called Ray jay the ‘den of depression.’ Not the ‘licht house.’

    LMFAO

Thats a good description of what I saw also.

  22. adam from ny Says:

    when the chips are down………..

    add the dipp

  23. adam from ny Says:

yaya is a #3 at this point and nelly is #4…

    missing a 1 and 2 is horrible…

also add in britt and that’s worse…

then minus the blitz ability that DW at least offered up…

    and it’s a recipe for disaster…

adding in a true #1 like a garrett saves the day, because bowles is at least good enough to survive with a 1, 3 and 4…

he can dial up enough stunts etc. to survive missing a 2…

with no 1 and 2…….the group is like rowing a boat without an oar

  24. Dave Pear Says:

    Inept . Coaching. Again.

  25. Pryda30 Says:

It’s fundamentals that our defense is lacking that’s on the HC hopefully we can turn it around and upset the Chiefs

  26. Dave Pear Says:

The only way we upset the Chiefs is if we don’t show up for the humiliation.

  27. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

Just gets up there and lies with no consequences. He’s a 500 Coach and that’s what you guys should be asking the why after all these years with all this Talent your record just 500. The only people like his coaching are the players because he doesn’t hold them accountable
