Todd Bowles: “Nobody Is Coming To Save Us”

October 28th, 2024

Todd Bowles.

The Bucs defense is killing this team and it has the same scent as the defenses under lousy Lovie Smith and Mike Smith.

You can generally find this same scent around sewage treatment plants and unkept public restrooms.

And if things don’t get repaired soon, this Bucs team sure looks like it is about to turn south in a hurry. If so, things will be very interesting.

Perhaps sensing this, Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Derrick Brooks isn’t coming through the locker room double doors. The Bucs must fix the defense with the tools they have.

Or else.

“It starts with coaching,” Bowles said. “It starts with me. It starts with the defensive coaches and it starts with players. We’ve got to play better.

“We have to fix it. Nobody is coming to save us. We have to do a hell of a lot better job then we’re doing and that starts with me.”

Joe applauds Bowles for his candor but the way Joe sees Bucs fans react on social media, they have figured out the source of the awful defense without Bowles taking a bullet.

Bucs fans seem to have already concluded its the third-year Bucs head coach.

It really blows Joe’s mind that the same defense that shut Detroit down in Week 2 on the road now can’t stop a cool breeze.

And the next two teams up are Kansas City on the road and a home game against San Francisco. The Bucs are technically two games behind the Dixie Chicks now that they have the tiebreaker against the Bucs.

Being three games (or more?) behind Atlanta when the Bucs come back from the bye in late November would be pretty much curtains for the Bucs unless they hope to secure a wild card berth.

And the way teams are kicking arse in the NFC North, good luck with that.

The Buccaneers are on the clock….

Joe they haven’t gone full lawn chair yet. That 56-3 game. The game where they lose the locker room, but it’s coming soon I tell you.
Seriously the Bucs looked pretty good early on offense then they took out the guy that was toting the rock. They took out Bucky Irving for quarters 2 and 3 inexplicably.
Why would they decide to steer a different coarse? Talk about snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I’ve always said when coaches insist on not playing their best players; they won’t be coaching long.
This league is too good for that nonsense.
You heard it here first. Keep Bucky on the bench, and see where that gets you.

  3. MadMax Says:

Finish this Jason…..i saw it last year, time to go

  4. MadMax Says:

Fire him, Coen interim HC, get a new DC…..i feel like the JOKER here…ITS NOT THAT HARD!!!

  5. Bosch Says:

That almost sounded like accountability. Hmmm…. We will see.

  6. Bucsfan951 Says:

It’s hard to defend the atrocious defense that we witness weekly. Listen, when you think it’s ok to drop back vita, Nelson, or JTS into pass coverage, we have a huge problem!

Todd’s ceiling is 9-8 at best and he gets out-coached pretty much every single week. It’s embarrassing and borderline criminal.

  7. adam from ny Says:

there’s not much to really say……

    actually there is…lol…

jarrett looks good…roll with him – so much more polished then palmer and mcsilly…

cade looks good…bucky and rachaad look good…more tucker…

palmer needs to get focused man…mcmillan just isn’t ready or that good…and shep dosn’t look like a guy who can save a depleted receiver group…

funderjunk didn’t even really look good last week when he was in the game – he just wasn’t heavily targeted…i was expecting him to get toasted after they studied his film…

britt wasn’t eaten alive – yet they still ate…

mahommes is licking his chops to run “circle scrambles” around this d-line…

joe sho completely looked like a flailing legs and arms puppet, as he consistently got pushed out of plays off the edge, onto a cozy island all to himself (like tom hanks and wilson) – once again arms and legs flailing and puppeteering in the wind…perfect for halloween…

the trick plays both looked bad…

the fact it wasn’t at least 50-50 pass/run is odd…

yaya actually might be the 3rd edge guy and nelly 4th…so we don’t have a 1 or 2 edge guy…joe sho isn’t even human – he’s a puppet…the pass rush has major issues…the defense has holes galore…

captain kirk went untouched and was comfie in the pocket…not confortable….”comfie”….dude could nestle into a blanket back there and sip a hot chocolate on a snowy winter night…

i can go on and on…

    but …………..

we do seem to beat good teams this year…

    so………

win the next 2 and go into the bye 6-4…

or go 5-5 and go into the bye at my orig “maintain number” before the schedule eases up…

they gotta turn it around and turn it around now…

i was thinking we bring saleh in as a consultant after he was cut loose in new york, but green bay body snatched him

I guess Bowles has not lost the locker room, but I could be wrong. I heard on one of the post-game shows that Lavonte David has quit talking to the press, apparently, he would have nothing positive to say about the defense, but it would be nice if he lit a fire under his teammates to motivate them as he did after the Denver game. If the Bucs are 4-6 at the by does anyone see them getting to 10 wins? I do not, they could lose to the Panthers if the D lets Andy Dalton look like Kurt Warner and the 99 Rams so it is possible this team implodes like Rah’s 2011 team and go 4-13. Any way you cut it, it looks like Bowles is going to have to be held accountable for an utter fail by his D.

  9. lambchop Says:

Honestly, who can stop a cool breeze? Especially in Tampa in the afternoon.

  10. Drunkinybor Says:

I gotta feeling we are still going to win this division by a game. I know they have the tie breaker. I just have a feeling. Atlanta, they are a injury away from falling way off. I believe in these players not Blows. I think he’s a decent fine fellow who’s a okay head coach. I wish Arians never left. But I belive in these guys. Once the league gets more and more tape on Atlanta they will fall and fall some more. 🤞

  11. itzok Says:

Fire Bowles that would be a start to saving us

  12. Bobby M. Says:

Bucs won’t fire Bowles until the season is done…..but it’s coming. Ownership has a standard and 9-8 isn’t going to cut it. Bowles defense is clearly exposed, teams know he blitzes and are finding the open players. He’s not able to fix anything, it’s either blitz or nothing. Really the only thing that can turn our season around is the offense. We have to protect the football, 2 turnovers every game is a formula for consistent losing….especially with this defense.

  13. richbucsfan Says:

Total organizational failure. Not one of this defense’s issues was unknown. Britt, JTS, lack of depth on the D-line, none of it was unknown. It was hoped that Britt would excel. He hasn’t. It was hoped JTS would excel in a contract year. He hasn’t. It was hoped that the D-line would hold up. It hasn’t. What is happening should come as no surprise. This is a tier 3 defense that will continue to get shredded. Savvy OCs see the tape and it’s Ground Hog Day over again. No, there is no one coming to help the Bucs out. Maybe 5-12.

  14. Florida Cat Says:

    Translation

    “No way i keep my
    Job” HC Todd Bowles

  15. Hodad Says:

Joe the Bucs defense didn’t shut down the Lions. They did keep them out of the endzone for the win, but stop them they did not. The Lions drove the ball at will, they were in the redzone 7 times, just didn’t punch it in. If we had to play the Lions again, which we won’t, they’d kill us. Truth is, even with our 4 wins the defense didn’t stop anybody.

  16. Buc2Blame Says:

Baker hasn’t done this team any favors with his Jameis like production

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Hodad … ‘If we had to play the Lions again, which we won’t, they’d kill us. Truth is, even with our 4 wins the defense didn’t stop anybody.’

Agree 100% Hodad. But the bigger question is … ”With the talent on THIS current Bucs’ defense, how do you FIX IT?’

How does a DC compensate for a very average (at best) DLine? How do you compensate for OLBs who can’t generate a decent pass rush? How do you compensate for a MLB who should be limited to S/Ts? And how do you compensate for a Secondary that can’t stop giving up big plays?

And maybe the even bigger question is … ‘How do you compensate for all those weaknesses all at the same time?’

If I was Todd Bowles, my answer would be (1) turn the defense over to George Edwards; (2) have him transition to a 4-3 defense; (3) and with 7 days left until the trade deadline, look for any way to shore up our DLine, OLB, LB & CB groups.

  18. Lightningvinny Says:

Not a great situation when you have to score 30 game in and out and HOPE that might be enough ,,,, Heck when Falcons got the ball back before the end of the half most of us were hoping they would only get a FG ,, that’s from our 30,,, and that’s what happened only cause they ran out of time or else it was going to be 6,,, also , anyone getting tired of defending these 3rd and 20s where we stop them but give up an extra 15 ,,, if we aren’t getting to the QB then the linemen dropping back into coverage isn’t working ,, we aren’t confusing anyone

  19. Eckwood Says:

Todd couldn’t manage the clock two years ago, last year , and he just did as poor a job as possible yesterday!!
    He hasn’t a Clue !! It’s Embarrassing!!

  20. adam from ny Says:

at halftime i was worried the falconi’s would drop a 40 burger on us…

  21. BuddhaBuc Says:

Baker has been making mistakes because he knows this crap defense is not going to hold up and carry their weight. That puts too much on a quarterback knowing that even if scores 30 points, they’ll still lose the game. AND, although Todd said “it starts with me”, he still indirectly threw the players under the bus in the overall response by saying “defensive coaches and it starts with players”. He just won’t take sole responsibility not matter what.

Good coaches adjust to changes and injuries. Todd thinks that no matter the group he trots out there, they should stay in the overly complex scheme he has. No one asked for Todd to be the HC, we were stuck with him because of BA. I think Arians. I think Ariens wanted the next man up to be so bad that it would make his legacy even better. I think he knew Toilet Todd would be a horrible head coach and he left him the keys to the castle anyway.

You can’t put any of this on Baker when he is out performing Brady and putting up numbers like we haven’t been accustomed to forever. The guy puts it all on the line every game. Give him a defense that matches the offense and we would be 7 – 1 right now and telling Cousins and Rah Rah how much they like that.

Part of me wants us to lose the next two so that maybe, we have Coen as the HC after the bye. That way, next year we maybe won’t be teetering on 50/50 every year. I’m sick to my stomach with how we made Atlanta look like an elite team that they are not and all the media is saying we knew Cousins was going to take the south. Am I wrong?

  22. Pewter Power Says:

Derrick Brooks Can’t fix Todd Bowles scheme because he’d have him blitzing on every play instead of coverage.

Good finally it’s up to the defensive coach to allow his defense to save the season. Goodbye Todd Bowles you wasted the last three years of our football lives enough is enough. You’ve been beat twice by Raheem Morris

  23. 1#bucsfan Says:

JOE it’s not just the defense. I do agree the defense is killing the Bucs. Our offense can move the ball but look at the turnovers. It tells the rest of the story. With how 💩 our defense is you can NOT turn the ball over once and expect to win. Plain in simple and baker has bin giving the ball away like famous Jameis. By the way he just beat the ravens.

  24. Bucfan Says:

Our only hope is MORE empty seats!!!! Perhaps that will get the Glaziers’ attention that a coaching change is over due.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

Bowles is a good enough coach to be mediocre at best.

    Maybe ownership settle for mediocre.

  26. bucnjim Says:

When a running team is able to throw for 4 TD’s you know there are major issues. I’m not giving Mayfield a pass, but from early on you knew the Falcons were going to score 30-40. This forces the offense to take chances like that ridiculous flea flicker and the fake punt. There are all signs of desperation and the other teams know this.

  27. adam from ny Says:

domino’s pizza is coming to save me…!

the viral pizza…lol…peep it on youtube…

let coach know i will be saved by domino’s, and i might save him a slice 🙂

  28. Cobraboy Says:

I’m not sure this Bowles D is any better than the Smith D.

  29. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

Perfect response from a 500 Coach

  30. Cobraboy Says:

    DR is correct.

There is no fix for this defense as is.

I’m not sure any coach on the Bucs staff could be any more mediocre than Bowles.

  31. Chef Baker Says:

Plenty of blame to go around. It’s a team effort to win games. Baker has been throwing to the wrong team the past few games. And the defense is atrocious. I’m starting to not even want to watch this mess until it’s fixed. And really don’t even want us to make it to the post season if we continue to limp there.

  32. Chef Baker Says:

Is it fire the coach billboard time yet? Lol

  33. buccaneric Says:

Yeah, two more weeks to determine if Bowles is toast, I think. They just blew the division. He cost them a second superbowl with Brady.

What more do the Glazers need to see?

  34. NEOhio Buc Says:

JPP is gone, haven’t found a suitable replacement. Devin White (rookie year) hasn’t been replaced yet. CB is a revolving door of toasters. LVD is done at the end of the season. The current defensive roster is injury prone. Most teams would have collapsed by now. The simple fact that team is still competitive in spite of the defenses struggles tells me it’s not the coaching staff. It’s more of a personal turnover problem, with complications of not enough cap room. This team, especially on defense, will not look the same next year.

  35. Davenport Says:

He’s right — no one is coming to save the team and Bowles has proven time and time again, he’s not capable of it either

    2022: 8-9
    2023: 9-8
    2024: 4-4

Haven’t Licht and the Glazers seen enough?

  36. Luis Says:

Guys, one question: what happened defensively since the Detroit game? Right, Dennis got injured 2 games later. And what happened after that? The middle of the field was open 24/7. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Stop complaining about Bowles. Yes hes too conservative in things like going for it on 4th down, but how are you supposed to be a good defense when the guy in the middle of it Is the worst ranked starter in all of the NFL per PFF. It’s not a coaching issue. Its a talent issue

  37. heyjude Says:

Feeling a different vibe coming from the players right now. The two top WR being out has a lot to do with the mindset. I think Todd still has the locker room, but am sensing some different apprehensiveness and maybe it doesn’t have to do with Godwin and Evans being out right now. Unsure, but it feels really low. It was a close game. We down injuries and we almost won. Says a lot too.

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Bowles is correct. Nobody is coming to save us. And the same applies to him as HC. Nobody is coming to save you sir unless you get this sorry a.. Defense to start playing 100% better. You are already halfway out the door with yesterday’s past poor performance.
