Three Big Mistakes By Baker Mayfield

October 27th, 2024

It’s almost ironic that on a day that saw Mr. Cleveland, Jameis Winston, put the Browns on his back for a huge interception-free win against the Ravens, Baker Mayfield channeled the ghost of Jameis and threw two more bad interceptions in a Bucs loss.

Against the Ravens on Monday night, Mayfield had two bad picks and repeated that today versus Atlanta. He’s now thrown 9 interceptions through 8 games.

Joe’s especially annoyed because Mayfield’s No. 1b job today was to protect the football. He needed to play a near perfect game because the Bucs defense has been struggling and Tampa Bay’s two best weapons were in street clothes.

Without those interceptions, the Bucs probably win today and Mayfield returns to the 2024 MVP conversation.

Instead, the Bucs are aching and Mayfield will have to settle for being on pace to throw 44 touchdowns, 19 interceptions and a whopping 4,651 yards.

Those are stunning numbers, but as Jameis learned in Tampa, throwing picks at that rate will get you beaten and run out of town.

Joe is not down on Mayfield. He’s having a strong year, but he’s proven the past two weeks that he’s not ready to be called elite — something the Bucs might need him to be to overcome their defense.

Oh, and Mayfield had a third ugly error. That overthrown Hail Mary to end the game simply cannot happen.

It’s got to be a catchable ball in the middle of the end zone or at the goal line.

Those 2 picks on the Falcons side of the field lost the game. If the Bucs get 2 FGs instead of 2 Ints they win.

    Smh…

  2. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Mayfield is the white Winston

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Mayfield is fun and cool…but he’s not a championship QB.

  4. Tye Says:

Need to get ridf of those stupid throw back unis….
They are cursed and cheesy looking!

  5. Ed Says:

Mayfield is a “bullet” thrower. He is fine throwing short and into tight windows as the ball gets there quick but when he is throwing further downfield his ball doesn’t have enough air on it. The interception on the throw near the end zone to McMillan would have been a touchdown if he threw it higher. JMac was behind the coverage but ball trajectory was too low. The other interception I thought was ill advised because Miller was double covered. He could have fought harder as both him and the DB had their hands on the ball at same time. Miller could have played defense and knocked it out of the hands of the interceptor.

  6. GoneGator Says:

    Baker hasn’t seemed “in rhythm”.
    The fumble cost us too.
    😔

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Baker has 7 INTs in his last 3 games – and the last 4 INTs have been terrible, and 100% on him as he had plenty of time to throw the ball and just made terrible decisions.

The fact Winston, with a minute left in the game vs the Ravens throws a perfect 40 yard TD pass — at nearly the same moment in time that Baker, with the game on the line, throws the ball out of bounds from the 40 to end the game, man.

I’m really not that down Baker, just his idiot Baker Boi(s) followers who literally say he’s better than Mahomes and has a better career than Drew Brees. Those people are world class idiots.

Baker is what he is. He’s good at keeping plays alive in the pocket, and making throws less than 10 yards. If he’s asked to do more than that, he consistently fails. But hey, don’t ask Tom Brady to run an RPO offense, use your players to the best of their ability, and Coen has done an amazing job of that this year.

But for the hail marys, maybe bring in Trask.

  8. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Go watch the highlights Jameis threw the ball straight to Kyle Hamilton’s numbers and he dropped it. I loved his shout out in the post game interview for the white boy in Detroit. Classic lol

  9. Peter Says:

Finally we put it on him it was him

  10. LakelandBuc Says:

When Baker Mayfield missed that throw to a WIDE open Jalen McMillan……who could have walked into the End Zone for a TD. I knew then, it was gonna a day of misfiring for him.

7 INTS in the past 3 games

That’s not gonna cut it, not in the NFL

  11. Dan the Bucs Fan Says:

Get a clue! Baker threw one interception that almost any serviceable nfl receiver goes up and gets. The second the guy made a great play to act like Baker didn’t do his job today makes you look like a clown. We lost because the defense can’t get to Qb and can’t cover period.

  12. BA’s Red Pen Says:

And here we go with the Trask nonsense.

  13. Oneilbuc Says:

Jack. Jamies played better than Baker Mayfield today and that’s just a fact. He played better than Baker against the Ravens also.

  14. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yup Munch, Jay Miss proved himself today. Just ignore the last several years. He is gonna take the Brownies to the Super Bowl, or maybe the Supper Bowl?

  15. orlbucfan Says:

What’s with this report? So, Famous Jameis won a game. He did that here, too. He also threw a boatload of picks. The Bucs were set for SB 2021 when they replaced the QB.

    ——-

Sure, Winston won, didn’t throw any INTs, had a game winning drive under 2 mins vs a team that destroyed the Bucs last week… but he had an ‘almost INT’… That’s much better than Baker’s actual INTs and loss. LOL!

As I’ve always said, being a Baker Boi is a literal mental illness.

  17. MelvinJunior Says:

How many does he have now, in just the past three games… SEVEN!? Is he trying to beat Jameis’s record or WHAT!? I thought Jameis would have a monster game today… Just such a shame. He is a VERY awkward/strange human. Shameis. He should’ve been a HOF level talent. He could’ve been if not for having such a weird ‘childish-level’ BRAIN.

  18. SBucs Says:

Can anyone answer this question? Were any of the four TD passes Atlanta threw contested? I think maybe one. When Winfield knocked the ball out at the goal line. Other than that I’m not so sure.

  19. Anyhony Says:

Am I the only one who holds their breath when our ball carriers run after the catch? Can someone PLEASE teach them how to protect the ball!!!

  20. Anyhony Says:

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
also and especially the running backs.

  21. Buchen61 Says:

This Joe sucks… Quit with the baker hating… You sound like a complete idiot. Do you want jameis as your qb take your sorry a$$ to Cleveland and take your alter ego rod muncher with you.

  22. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, the longer Baker holds the ball, the worse it gets. You can just about predict it every time… He’s usually gonna end up trying to force-it’ and eventually will make a horrible, disastrous mistake. You can about bank on it! He’d be MUCH better off just tucking it and RUN. When you see him back there with all day, you KNOW it’s coming. I was talking with a lifelong Clevelander at the CCC vs St. Frances (Braswell’s old team – they were SO big… I mean HUGE – ‘biggest’ HS team I’ve EVER seen, especially up front) game on Friday Night, & he said, “you all know how it is… you just can’t trust Baker… he’s going to screw-it up… it’s going to happen (usually in bunches, and at THE WORST times)… I’ve seen it myself, way too many times.” With that said, I don’t believe Baker had a terrible game today, & they DEFINITELY did not lose today, because of HIM. I just know exactly what the guy was saying and meant… It Just Is What It Is. #TankForManning Hahah

  23. Jeffs grandpa Says:

And then Rod becomes the D Muncher again

  24. Buchen61 Says:

Only the Panthers and Jaguars have given up more points than the bucs but lets spend all our time bitching about Baker… Baker was missing his 2 best recoeving options and the one pick was a toss up but yeah its all baker and not our swiss cheese d

  25. rrsrqnc Says:

Finally, the acknowledgment of the last play, you cannot overthrow a Hail Mary, it’s Al you got

  26. HeavyE Says:

Baker is who we thought he was or is…….no more no less.

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Hey Bakehen61 why don’t you go kneel kneel in your Bakerfanboi hutt and cry there. Why is it when bad points about his play are brought up you slit machines get into your feelings and call people names like hater??? 4 bad plays by your idol contributed to this loss so calm down Karen

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Their receivers wide open, ours usually contested…..The interception to Miller should have made the catch….I don’t blame Baker.
Our defense lost this game….in particular the pass defense.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Start Trask the rest of the year.
    Don’t resign Godwin.
    Lavante will retire.

    Fire Bowles.
    Trade Mayfield next year.
Secure a top 5 pick and get a mew young guy at qb if Trask doesn’t develop.
If Trask does well, use that pick on a Godwin replacement

Godwin will not be as good the rest of his career.

  30. Gipper Says:

The defensive backs made great plays on both INT’s. It also seemed clear on a number of throws the receivers were not on the same page with Mayfield. McCollum in particular was not looking for the ball but rather looking for a spot. These things are to be expected with new, young receivers. Notwithstanding the injuries to ME and CG, the team moved the ball very well and continues to be very efficient on 3rd down.

  31. Cchead Says:

    Jameis Mayfield

  32. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Baker can’t elevate. We needed him to elevate his game today not be the same baker. The WRs did their job. He missed JMac AND Miller on plays QBs make. Not hero QBs, just QBs. Play mistake free as a leader of this team. Don’t give up scoring opportunities. He failed. Liam was brilliant!

  33. BucsFan81 Says:

Interesting that the defense looks like garbage and the leader of the defense #54 has refused to talk to the media the last 2 weeks. Seems a lot more is going on at Bucs headquarters. This could get pretty ugly if we are 4-6 going into the bye week.

  34. LANshark Says:

Tampabaybucfan nailed a part of it. I agree Miller should have made the catch, or at the very least made sure Bates didn’t. But he’s just off the Practice Squad – those things happen.

Baker is trying to hard right now, cause he knows he needs to carry the team. And he believes in himself – sometimes a bit too much. It’s not his nature to throw it away and live to play another day.

But I’m also not seeing any separation from any of the WR’s today except Shepard, and Palmer was a complete no-show. Thank god Otten can catch in traffic.

And yeah, our defense is terrible right now – their receivers were running wide open. Even when ours make the catch, there is no YAC

  35. Boltsfan17 Says:

4th team since he got into the league. Ridiculously the Bucs paid this guy so much. He’s mediocre at best. Thanks Licht.

  36. Show Me the TDs Says:

Morons defending Baker after 7 interceptions and 2 losses in 2 games need to get a clue or at least wipe their chins.

  37. Bernie Says:

One of the interceptions was on a bad play call that looked designed for Evans to go up and get one. It made no sense to call that play with current active personnel. The second INT is part of getting behind and trying to make plays. If you think Baker played badly, then you are saying that we need a 4 TD – 0 INT a game QB. Good luck finding that player.

  38. Robert Says:

I’m trying to comprehend what the heck everyone is wining about against Mayfield. The entire season the defense has been horrendous, literally cannot stop anyone. Today they were even worse so lay off mayfield for making mistakes like every qb on every team does. unfortunately our defense is so pathetic it highlighted his mistakes.

  39. MegaFailure Says:

dude will always be watching the superbowl just like the rest of us

  40. maccafan Says:

Just for the record people, Patrick Mahomes has thrown the same number of INTs (9) this year as Baker with only 8 TD passes. Let’s stop with the Jameis Winston nonsense because he has one good game. Yes, Baker needs to take better care of the ball than the last three games, but he should not be throwing the ball 50 times either. He does not have his two top receivers also. It might be pretty ugly against KC next week also.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, I will absolutely take 4700 yards, 44 TDs and 19 INTs. That type of season should mean the Bucs win at least 10 games. Should, anyways.

You still need a defense that isn’t giving 500 yards every week.

  42. StickinUp4Centers Says:

“Ridiculously the Bucs paid this guy so much”

I don’t think Baker is elite by any means. This year he doesn’t seem to be able to connect on a deep ball and his numbers are propped up by YAC. That being said, his salary is right around where it should be and a case could be made that he is underpaid. Daniel Jones, Deshaun Watson, Derek Carr all make more money than him. You could throw in Trevor Lawrence, Kyler Murray, and the shell of Aaron Rodgers as others who don’t deserve to make more than Baker.

  43. Mike Says:

To all you who are defending baker I don’t blame you, you have spent the year putting him on a pedestal to go against him now would mean you have to humble yourself and admit you were wrong but reality is he great within 10 to 15 yards but when he has to throw the long ball 30, 40, 50 yards or better we hold our breath because he is not accurate. It’s the receivers and running backs that get the yards after catch from the short passes that make him look great not his ability.

  44. Mike Says:

    HE IS NOT ELITE

  45. EEK Says:

there’s a lot of pressure to score every possession when the D can’t stop teams

things seem hopeless for this season

  46. 4-5straight Ls Says:

Please don’t mention him and MVP again in the same sentence. He is playing like trash when you look at it aside from the garbage stats. He is jumpy and makes terrible decisions when he should throw it away.

  47. We Make Custom Teez Says:

to make it worse… McMillian had one guy behind him on the left hash… throw the ball toward the left corner of the endzone which was the empty area of the defense, and the WR had a chance… but Mayfield chose to make another head-scratching throw into the middle of the field with 30 defenders waiting with the ball landing out of bounds

  48. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I can’t deny Baker’s mistakes, but I’m not going to get hung up on them until the defense gives up less than 30 points

  49. Trask To The Future Says:

    HAVING A STRONG YEAR!?

Once again, garbage time stats. We were yet again down by 2 scores and they started letting him rack up yards underneath.

How does anyone not see this? Dude regularly turns 175-200 yard stat snoozefest games into 300+ yard games due to garbage time when the game is out of reach.

IT’S FINALLY TIME FOR THE KYLE TRASK ERA TO BEGIN!

  50. Bee Says:

Who really wants to see Bowles and Baker lead this team again next year with Evans and Godwin a year older? Something has got to change….

  51. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

I like and support Baker but I have to agree with you this time. Sad mistakes while trying to be the hero.

My bigger question is…. Why don’t our receivers get wide open? Is it bad routes or bad coaching?

  52. NaplesBucsFan Says:

Bake did screw up at least 3-4 times today… if he ain’t the main problem. The defense is a slotted spook letting everything go right through it and the offense is not consistent from quarter to quarter, almost possession to possession. Been starting fast each game and slowing down big time in the second half the last 3 losses.
Difference with Mahomes horrible play is that he has a team with a stout defense that covers his ass…Baker doesn’t have anything close to that.

  53. Kenton Smith Says:

Anybody on this site tell me when the Bucs advanced past the first round of the playoffs except the Brady years. Isn’t that funny. And Baker did it his first year. And now he’s hanging numbers that only elite QBs could hang. And he’s on a young team. If the defense plays like that second half tonight we don’t lose another game. And Bowles and Baker will be here a long time.

  54. Shak Says:

I’m riding with Baker until the wheels fall off! I rode with Brady and I actually don’t like him one bit! If he’s the QB, I want all the good he can muster! I like Trask, but he’s not the QB, so IDGAFF about him when he’s #2! I ride with #1 until there is a new #1, because I’m a BUCS FAN first!!

With that said, I would like to see one interception he has had this season where multiple people don’t tell us how it was someone else’s fault.

We know the defense is terrible but two things can be true at once, the fact is it’s also Baker who has gone from one of the best in the game first few to struggling terribly at bad times recently. It’s not always his fault but most of those last 7 INT have been on him. He’s also racking up yards/points after he keeps giving it away and leaving the defense out there B2B2B, which takes the stink off of how bad he really was. If he takes care of the ball and stop taxing an already bad defense maybe we’d hold off the other teams better.

Baker isn’t the biggest reason we have been losing, that’s the defense, but he’s not always blameless like a lot of commenters make it seem either!

If I was forced to bet money, I’d bet on Baker turning it up, in a good way, next game! He’s better than he was last season IMO, because he seems more confident and comfortable. Clean up the mistakes and we’ll be cooking with grease!

The defense can go to… tf?!

  55. Sacker58 Says:

As Mayfield did throw two interception he certainly isn’t ALL the problem.
This defense or lack there of is soberingly Horrible.
I’ve seen some bad Bucs defenses in forty some years but this one is close to as bad as I’ve ever witnessed.
The ONLY thing good about it is that I can free up my Sunday now to go fishing .SMH.

  56. Mark Reese Says:

I don’t know who greenlighted that flea flicker play, but it was a bonehead play

  57. Dennis H. Says:

Bad interceptions? I suppose all interceptions are bad, but those weren’t ill advisable throws. Both defenders made great plays. On the first pick, the ball was also in the hands of our receiver, but he didn’t pull it down. Evans would have had it. On the second pick, the defender was no where near when the ball was released. He read it and made a great play. And complaining about a Hail Mary that didn’t work? How many do work? That’s why they’re called Hail Marys. All things considered (like Evans and Godwin missing), the offense played a respectable game.

  58. Becky Says:

For all you Baker haters, how many times did the Tampa defense get to Cousins yesterday? Yeah that’s right, ZERO. That’s Baker’s fault right? No name receivers on the field and we only lost by 5. If either Goodwin or Evans had been on the field this would have been an easy win for the Bucs. The defensive play is too erratic and they do not play like they are coached by a “defensive genius.” when they allow over 30 points to be scored on them every damn game. That is the problem not interceptions by a guy being forced to do more than he should, because he doesn’t have a defense who can stop the opponent on third down or a receiver right now he can depend on going and getting the ball.

  59. Bucsfantim Says:

Simply put. He has to stop turning the ball over. Especially in the redzone. If we win the turnover battle we will win the game. You can’t be throwing 2 picks a game for 3 straight weeks.

  60. Rescue Plan Says:

Bring TB12 back, we’ll take the tense locker room with results and a SB vs fun locker room and his 7 interceptions the last couple games with losses …strange you d take a swipe at the goat when you’ve been traded so many times for your same pattern…hate to say it same old baker

  61. Wild Bill Says:

So just getting real. Baker had exactly the same kind of a loosing streak last year. Then he caught fire and managed to sneak into the playoffs with a strong finish to the season and then winning a playoff game. Is that pattern in fact the true measure of Baker?Hot and cold and streaky?? Loose a bunch then win a bunch? Time will tell.
