Can’t Pin Blame On Liam Coen

October 27th, 2024

Solid gameplan.

Think Kirk Cousins and the Dixie Chicks riddled the Bucs defense? Oh, they did. Then there was the other side of the coin.

The Bucs put up 432 yards of offense on Atlanta — some 330 yards through the air and 102 on the ground.

That seemed near impossible five days ago.

After the carnage of the Monday night curb-stomping at the hands of the Crows, it seemed the Bucs offense was going to drop off the face of the earth without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Instead, Coen adapted, adjusted and overcame, all on a short week.

Joe spoke with veteran receiver Sterling Shepard after the game. He said today’s offensive output was what he expected.

“That’s what we have in this room, we have playmakers in this room,” Shepard said. “We’re going to be able to move the ball. We’re going to be able to run an efficient offense.

“We didn’t expect anything else. That’s what we expected to do.”

Joe was told the Bucs didn’t really make any wholesale changes without Evans and Godwin.

“Everybody can make plays,” Shepard said of why Coen didn’t do much tinkering. “It doesn’t matter. Everybody on this offense can make plays.

“This offense can make plays. This is our job. This is what we do. This is what we have been doing since we were little kids.”

Though Shepard was obviously peeved by the outcome, he seemed tired of hearing about how the Bucs offense would nosedive without Evans or Godwin.

“It’s not just one person,” Shepard said. “It’s a collective unit.”

Shepard also added that he and everyone else on the offense trusts Coen and believes he will find a way to score points no matter who is on the field.

Oh really? Yes, we fans can. The problem is the head coaching instability. Two OCs in two years, huh? The team is rebuilding, and Jason Licht is not the problem. The owners are. Nothing new cos we’re dealing with trust fund kids. A lot of them own the teams.

  2. HC Grover Says:

Coen for HC Bowles for the Bus

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

So then, is Jose implying that the offense made no mistakes? Seems like it.

  4. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Licht is a (big) part of the problem.

  5. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Coen has done a hell of a job all season. He called another really good game today, particularly since he was missing #1 and #2, and the Bucs don’t really have a great third option.
It was great to see Cade Otton step up. Who is #81? Jarrett looked pretty good as well.

  6. Miller5252 Says:

The offense had its own problems today, but did enough to win that game. Bucky needs to be the work horse and Baker has to cut down on stupid INT’s. Bucs D isn’t good enough to cover turnovers. Otton has been a nice surprise lately. He’s usually dropping 2-4 passes a game and has done really good the last 2 games.

  7. #99 the big fella Says:

Knowing you need players and doing nothing about it is on Jason light

  8. Bucsfan81 Says:

Can we just fire Bowles now and move Coen to HC and then try to find a DC. Make the move over the bye week.

  9. orlbucfan Says:

Otton is being focused on by Mayfield. Defenses are figuring it out. Either Coen or Mayfield or both need to get on the same page. Coen is a first year OC. Licht has done his job. The Offense is the strength of this team right now. Coen needs to get with it, but he’s hasn’t been here a full year. The receivers have to be fully used. They’re not. The other problem is QB bootleg options. The Bucs have the talent to do it. Why isn’t Coen calling it?

  10. LakelandBuc Says:

3 offensive turnovers, a failed fake punt

And people here are still blaming everything on the defense

    Lol,

    SMDH

  11. IE Bucs Says:

Coen is perfect where he is at, as OC. Some good OCs are not cut out to be HC. I don’t know if Coen will be a HC one day, but he doesn’t have HC experience right now andwe need a HC that can fix the defense. A defense coach that is not Bowles and his defensive staff.

  12. Tye Says:

Im all for firing Bowels now and naming coen hc

  13. MadMax Says:

Pull the plug Jason….Coen was already on his way….just get it over with….I was calling for this 2 weeks ago.

  14. BucsfaninOregon Says:

OBucfan, what the are you doing with that comment when responding to a, “Don’t blame the OC” thread??”!!
    1. We fans largely agree the game was not bungled by the OC.
    2. The Glazer’s may not be the best owners but don’t blame them for this loss.
    3. You first respond negatively and then with 2nd sentence agree. What the funk?!

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

Be careful what you wish for…..good OCs dont always make good head coaches. Aka Kliff Kingsbury.

Wouldnt want another Dirk Koetter expiriment.

I like Mike Vrabal, proven head coach and former Buc.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

Nevermind I dont know why I thought Vrabel was a former Buc….but he should still be a top target.

  17. b Says:

The offense is doing it’s job, averaging 30 points per game which is enq

  18. Stan says Says:

Jack Burton Mercer says: “Licht is a (big) part of the problem”. That is probably the most uneducated statement i have read on Joebucsfan.com. That’s saying alot considering the yahoos that comment from time to time. Real dumb Jack. Get you head out of you A–. The real issue is like most teams this year struggling except Carolina are injuries no more no less. Injuries are unfortunately part of the game and our bucs have been hit extremely hard this year. Good game for the offense today 26 should win you most games.

  19. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

He did an exceptional job with Evans and Godwin out. Baker did a good job of executing it. I just wish they’d use Tucker more than White. He’s a good a receiver and a whole lot better runner

  20. Rod Munch Says:

I think Coen has mostly done a great job, but I have no idea why they ran that flea flicker. The Bucs were moving the ball at will, and just didn’t need to do that. At the same time, Baker should never have never thrown that pass as the guy wasn’t even remotely open. I get that Coen expects his QB to never make that throw – but at the same time, there was no need to run that in that insulation.

The other minor issue was not using White creatively at all. For all the talk about making getting him in the slot some, he was just used mostly how he’s always used. Maybe a few more 2 back sets, but for the most part, this just looked like the standard offense. I wish they would have been more creative with him.

But overall, the performance today was very good. If Baker doesn’t throw those awful INTs, that were 100% on him (he wasn’t rushed, had plenty of time), the output looks a lot better and they likely win the game.

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

I feel bad for our Offense. They played well enough for us to win guys. All we needed was 2 or 3 key stops. I know Sapp, lynch and Books are Laughing there you know what off. I can hear Cousins in the locker room yellin, You like that Bucs? We own you. And…they do. There is no excuse for our dismal performance today. None whatsoever. Bowles should be searching for his next job.

  22. BA’s Red Pen Says:

HC Coen Bucs 2025. You can’t be a defensive head coach and have a crap defense. They are the worst tackling team in the league. 52 is the slowest pro football player I’ve seen since I started going to games in 1992. Get him off the field.

  23. Bosch Says:

Come on Joe. Run the Bowles now and leave it open over night.

  24. Jerseybuc Says:

He’s your next HC. Look radio how a coach adjusted.
    Saleh for DC

  25. Bobby M. Says:

Offense can put up 35 a game…..Bowles defense will give up 40. It’s a hopeless cause.

You sure ain’t no Bucs fan. IE Bucs, huh? Go away. There are some idiotic fans like me who post when the Bucs lose. We’re old-timers who are still alive and educated. Todd Bowles is very similar to Tony Dungy. His strength is Defense. He’s dealing with, count them, 2 OCs in two years. This football season is now halfway over and the Bucs are 0-7. What a load. This team needs a break. If the Falcons win the Division, so what?

  27. Bojim Says:

Cown is not ready for HC right now. Got to get solid as OC first. How’s Canales doing?

  28. LakelandBuc Says:

    orlbucfan,

These people are not true Bucs fans

They come here for one purpose only
To criticize everything Todd Bowles do
They are Bowles haters, not Bucs fans

They could care less if the Bucs win or lose
They are just waiting for that shiny moment to attack Bowles

Don’t waste your time on these people
Just pray for them, the obvious need therapy

Did you actually read my entire comment? It was about Coen and the Offense. Go back and read it.

We are in the 21st century. Every idiot in the world who can run a computer writes their opinion. The tech advances, yeah, the content, spare me.

  31. IE Bucs Says:

    orlbucfan,

I have been a bucs fan since 1997. I saw Dungy run this team with Kiffin as DC. I saw Dilfer and Shaun King. Bowles was a good defensive coordinator when Arians was running this team. Bowles defense hasn’t been the same since Arians left and the cover zero play against the Rams. Bowles started playing his zone nonsense. Bowles and his staff have lost the plot on defense. Time for him to go.

Bring in Saleh as HC to run the team, fix the defense, and pair him with OC Coen.

  32. FrontFour Says:

Why NOT blame Coen!!!! Sean Tucker touched the ball THREE times. Guy has speed and power and rides the pine. Second half play calling stunk the joint out.

  33. Nobody Says:

@lakelandBuc go look at how many points the Bucs’ DEFENSE has given the last 4 games. The defense is obviously the issue. Only a person who loves Todd bowles and doesn’t want to see him get fired says this or a person who is blind.

  34. HeavyE Says:

Thank You, FrontFour….and all of these trick plays aren’t working either!!! Coen is not a HC, neither is Bowels.

  35. MadMax Says:

Coen will be our new HC…todd dug his grave, leave him in it!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Bamboo Says:

    No fake punt, no problem.

  37. Les opyd Says:

Plenty of points to win. .pass Defense can’t stop anything . Offense is doing the job . They will get even better .it is only not even a full season oc.is the right guy . But the defense. Yikes !! Awful .

  38. unbelievable Says:

The offense played well in the first half.

In the second half they scored only 7 points. Not good enough, especially if our defense holds the other team to only 7.

The defense in the first half however… well I didn’t even see them play.

  39. SpringHillBuc Says:

My thoughts exactly FrontFour! With our top two receivers out then ALL three of the RB’s need to be in the lineup. Tucker had one throw tossed his way and ran the ball twice.

At halftime they had run for 74 yards, with Irving running for 41 on seven carries and White 29 on six. The team finished with 102 yards rushing. Irving finished the game with 9 carries and White with 6 carries. Bucky and White combined for a total of 2 carries the ENTIRE second half? Are you kidding me? Why would you take the ball out of your playmakers hands? It’s not like the game was out of reach. Stick to the plan and Baker wouldn’t have to force the ball to second hand receivers to try and make a play. Garbage play calling in the second half.

  40. Tom Horn Says:

The offense is scoring enough to win . The defense can’t stop anybody. The defensive backs are beaten on almost every play. The touchdowns on bomb passes. Ridiculous.

  41. BucVoyager Says:

Am I reading people blaming Licht? What a joke. We have one of the best GMs in the league. Two top shelf WRs are out so what do you expect. Baker had a stinker today so we lost. We all knew we needed to be flawless for a win and weren’t.

  42. JimBobBuc Says:

Keep Coen as OC, he’s more valuable as a playcaller and don’t waste him as HC. Saleh is an idiot and just as bad a HC as Bowles. I’d rather have Vrable as HC as long as he let’s Coen do his thing.

A lot of good comments about Coen’s playcalling in the second half. I think he’s the type of person to learn from his mistakes. He has very little play calling experience in the NFL so he’s learning….

But…. it’s still the defense that sucks. I’m surprised that Whitehead and Winfield haven’t been mentioned – they don’t seem to be making any plays.

  43. WNCBucsFan Says:

Yeah, the defense isn’t all that great. Maybe. Winfield got robbed of would could have been a game changing play. I think the refs are more partial to the preseason pundits that predicted the Bucs would have a losing season at best. Why isn’t anyone calling out the officiating? It obviously stunk as well.

  44. Chuck Says:

I’m a bucs fan never seen our defense so weak
