Another Look At The Bucs’ Failed Fake Punt

October 27th, 2024

Other than “why?” Joe’s not sure what to ask or say about the Bucs’ failed fake punt today from their own 38 yard line.

Perhaps Bucs coaches are as scared of their defense as Joe is.

It was 4th-and-3 with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter. The Bucs were only down a touchdown to Atlanta. The Bucs’ decision to direct snap the ball to backup defensive back Tavierre Thomas, their special teams ace, was problematic at best.

Before kickoff, without Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, the Bucs absolutely knew they did not want to play from behind under any circumstances. But this fake punt came with the risk of failure that would force the Bucs to throw more than they desired.

Joe might almost have stomached this fake if it was executed reasonably well, but it wasn’t. And the Bucs don’t have special teams unit that is known for being special.

After this fail, the Falcons marched in for an easy touchdown that proved to be the winning score.

Bowles Blunder. Very simple. He always does it.

  3. HC Grover Says:

Coen for HC Bowles for the door.

  4. SBucs Says:

Swiss Cheese Bowles called it, smell it and had to wipe his butt afterward.

  5. LakelandBuc Says:

No one is willing to talk about Baker 7 INTS in the past 3 games

  6. Architek Says:

Bowles is starting to look more and more like Leftwich of 2024!

  7. Richard Dickson Says:

The time to be risky was when it was 4th and short near the end of the first half.

  8. BallHawk75 Says:

At least it’s never boring. Always an adventure and exactly half a chance for success.

I smell a contract extension dawg!

    LFG!!!

We’ve been down this road before. Fire the head coach and promote the OC. 9 turnovers by the offense in the last three weeks. Let’s focus on the OC making sure we secure the ball and make smart decisions with the ball. The sad part is of all the interceptions, Baker was not really under much pressure

The falcons were stacked on the line. They clearly were on the lookout for a fake. You have to be able to audible out of that call at the line. Ace my backside! I bet you anything it was Thomas’ responsibility to change the call to a punt when he saw that the falcons new a fake was coming.

Architek, LOL. but true as I keep saying it’s that time. Move on from Bowles. I like Bowles and wanted him to get a fair chance but that’s all over now. I do think that if Bowles doesn’t go at least 10 & 6 and win at least 2 playoff games he will be shown the door

  12. HC Grover Says:

Beaver Bowles and ‘The No Brain Defense’

  13. RVATom Says:

Yeah….real head scratcher/Samsung smahser. I WANT a head coach who is aggressive. But legit, even if they somehow pulled that off I dunno if I’d have been happy with a special teams fake with OUR talent at that score at that point of the game. If you do that you better keep the pedal to the floor the entire rest of the game. You screwed up Todd…you better keep doubling.down at that point. NO more f’n punts…no more 3 man fronts…you’ve telegraphed the desperation. Keep trying. If youre gonna just ease up the rest of the game…then WHY go for it there? The game wasn’t lost…until after that. Unless you KNOW your D scheme and personell suck.

  14. Miller5252 Says:

This had to be the biggest head scratcher of the day…. No idea why someone thought this was a good idea. The other head scratcher was not letting Bucky run the ball every time and only sharing touches when he asks for a break. Not saying he is Barry Sanders but… he did have a couple of plays making people miss that he sure did remind me of the days of Lynch grabbing for air

  15. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

As Greg Olsen said on the network broadcast, the Bucs were outmanned on that side and should have checked out of that play.
I still wanna know WTF the Bucs were doing in cutting Camarda? This Gill guy blows. How does a punter suddenly forget how to punt?

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Joe, hope you are getting plenty of $$clicks$$ today.

  17. Winny Testaverde Says:

Worst fake punt attempt since the Colts vs Pats on prime time TV. Embarrassing.

  18. Nicholas Carlson Says:

If you’re gonna go for it just go for it

  19. Rod Munch Says:

The issue with the fake punt there, was that it’s the most obvious situation ever to run a fake punt, and the Falcons were playing the fake punt, you could by the way they lined up. Watching it live, I even yelled at the TV, DO NOT RUN A FAKE PUNT HERE THEY’RE WAITING FOR IT – as the play was snapped. Yeah, I know everyone will claim that, but seriously, I really was.

Frankly they should have just kept the offense on the field if you’re going for it. If you run a fake punt, it needs to be like how the Lions did it, completely unexpected. That’s when those trick plays work.

  20. unbelievable Says:

They didn’t even have a light guys lined up to block for it.

Situational awareness – this team has ZERO. You know why?

    Todd Bowles.

We see it over and over and over and over. They don’t know what to do during critical times. No feel for clock and game management or how to handle the things.

  21. unbelievable Says:

    *the right guys lined up

  22. unbelievable Says:

These filters suck can’t even call out the soft pansy head coach

  23. unbelievable Says:

Todd Bowles is softer than my morning 💩 , and so is his team.

    Charmin training camp.

    Charmin preseason.

    Charmin soft performance.

  24. NJBucs Says:

Again the coach is not aware of the situation in game and season. One score down, division tiebreaker on the line. But don’t punt it away, call the game punt out manned in the blocking scheme. If you’re doing that just keep the offense one field with the jet sweep to McMillan. Remember this Todd Bowles will consistently make the wrong decision.

  25. Oxycondomns Says:

what will bowles have up his sleeve for next week?

  26. Clay day Says:

    Bowles is so bad

  27. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Terrible fake punt call. Horrible execution. I thought they’d perhaps keep the O on the field. But that had disaster all over it. And obvious too. Felt like I was watching the Waterboy when the other team had the playbook and knew what was coming… shame.

  28. itzok Says:

    Coaching malpractice.

Coaching matters. This Dumbass guaranteed the falcons points when your defense had actually gotten stops all third quarter and you were in a one score game.

Punt the damn ball and make them drive the extra 40 yards to try and score. Just gave the game away
