Rigorous Research On Mike Williams Paid Off
September 18th, 2010Joe only needed to see Mike Williams’ circus catch Sunday to know the Bucs made a steal getting him in the fourth round.
What the Bucs may not have known was they landed a receiver who had a burning desire to make a lasting impression in the NFL, so unearths Chris Harry of Fanhouse.com.
As if the Bucs weren’t feeling good enough about the pick in April, Williams validated his new employers by winning a starting spot — not during training camp — but during OTAs and minicamps.
“We got a guy with a chip on his shoulder who didn’t believe he was a fourth-round draft pick,” Tampa Bay receivers coach Eric Yarber said. “The day we drafted him, he assured us we hadn’t made a mistake, that he was going to come in, win the spot and make us proud — and make a lot of people pay in this league.”
This is great to read but for Williams to continue to shine he must continue to adjust. Now that a defensive-minded coach like John Fox has tape on Williams to work with, it’s not a shock to learn he might try all sorts of wrinkles to confuse the rookie.

My favorite quote from the article:
He’s already in a hunt to be the best Mike Williams (Seahawks).
“Not hatin’ on him,” the Tampa version said. “I just hope he comes in second in all the Mike Williams categories.”

Not to be a hater, but I’m going to anyway. I hope the Bucs literally take out Dante Wesley this weekend. He is a total POS and I would love to see him taken off in a cart like Clifton Smith was.

No morning Cup of Joe on SATURDAY???????? Come on Man!!!
Now I”VE got a chip on my shoulder. 🙁

They don’t have Dante Wesley.

Too bad they did not do the same research on Winslow.

@BigMacAttack
He is no longer with the team.

Winslow was so good for us last year and seemed to be such a great trade. I sure hope he doesn’t end up being another one year wonder for us. We seem to have alot of those here.

Dom just got lucky. He had no idea Williams was this good!

I think the receivers are great and are getting greater. Just think, they double team Mike Williams what are they going to due about Mike Spurlock,Sammy, Who ever is TE, and the back coming out? Double team one of them also? Some one is open. Before they did not have to worry, one could not catch the ball, and the other was where? Different team, different desire, different plan. Plus these kids are learning each game and only getting better and they want to win.

Bummer, I can’t stand that guy, or Carolina for that matter.

JimBuc,
I disagree. Dom knew this stock was dropping because of “character issues.” He gambled that he would be there in the 4th round & he won. He knew he was good, that is why he was such great value at that pick in the 4th.
He also knew Benn would not be there, so he had to snag him up in the 2nd. At the end of the day, he got 2 wide receivers with 1st round talent.

Agreed! Our Wr are worth getting excited about- Williams, Spurlock,Stroughter,Benn, Parker, and Briscoe- who will surprise alot of you! Never remember having that many receivers on this team that I wanted to see play. Exciting times in Tampa!!

Dude give him the props for drafting him when we did. We were the first team to pull the trigger on Mike Williams. Dom beat 31 other GM’s to him, so dont say he got “lucky”. Applaud him for the pick! NICE PICK DOM!!!!

Great thought out response

@BigMacAttack
I don’t wish harm to anyone, nor should anyone else on here, but I understand being upset over such a thing. it IS true that Dante Wesley is a jerk! He ended Clifton Smith’s career here in Tampa, and if not for that hit, we still might have him around.

@ash Tell it like it is. I agree great pick in the fourth. Good job Dom.

Williams is a first round talent, no doubt. Will he stay out of trouble for the duration of his rookie deal is question 1. Question 2 is will this team pay him if he does.
The odds of both holding true (and him staying healthy) are very slim. That is why this team is bottom 4 in the league (but yes better than Cleveland at home – barely).

@Thomas, please state a player the bucs drafted, performed for us that we let walk and didnt sign long term recently?. We resigned freaking Clayton! That should tell you to not worry about Williams. Heck who even deserves a contract on the team right now? And for god sake please don’t say Ruud, he gotta get better at tackling at the line or in the backfield this year first.

Bucs 31 – Panthers 27

Oops. Bucs 31 – Panthers 17
LaFell appears to be out. 8 in the box at all times. Bucs’ D Line has breakout game.

@Thomas,
I find it interesting that you are judging a man who you don’t even know. I see nothing but positives with Mike Williams on the field or off. Lets stay positive,
Go Mike Williams & Go Bucs!
