Tristan Wirfs Is Playing “Lights Out”
October 26th, 2024Joe read something Friday night that damn near had him pulling out the plastic.
Joe was reading an article, while watching Boise State-UNLV, published by the reputable Sports Information Systems (SIS) that stated in their point system, no one this season has a higher score for an offensive lineman than Bucs left tackle Tristan Wirfs.
What was their point system and how did Wirfs get the highest score? So Joe went to the SIS website. What is the outfit’s point system? Cough up $1,200 and find out.
That was a little too rich for Joe’s blood.
(Joe has no idea how folks can watch two — or more — football games on the same screen. Joe’s tried that before and found out if he’s watching two, he’s seeing none. Joe simply cannot follow or fully lock in or immerse himself in a game by being constantly distracted with a second game. But, weirdly, Joe can read and watch a football game at the same time, no problem.)
In the first week, maybe first two weeks of the season, Wirfs wasn’t playing like his normal, dominant, beastly self. Make no mistake, he wasn’t playing badly. He just looked human.
Couple of guys got after Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield through Wirfs. Joe had to rub his eyes. Joe thought he was seeing imaginary things.
But the best way to tell if an offensive lineman is playing well is if you never hear his name during a broadcast. Joe rarely heard Wirfs’ name after the first two games.
Perhaps Wirfs was still learning the new offense and his new offensive coaches? That’s very likely.
That learning curve appears to be gone. Wirfs is back to owning defensive linemen. Just like we all have come to expect from the self-described “cornfed.”
These aren't just 3 dominant reps from Wirfs they're also a good summation of the game he had against Baltimore. Lights out pic.twitter.com/lmJHN5NGGF

Tristan is the man and the O-line has been doing their part. Strength of the team ATM. We need them to keep it up 👍🏼

After seeing how good the Ravens were, I thought losing by only 10 points was darn good. It was an exciting game until the horrid injuries.

Totally agree with Joe’s assessment of Wirf’s season thus far. However it’s even more impressive that he graded out that well after that absurd phantom holding penalty they gave him.

Pretty big holding call last week to bring back a Godwin TD. Or was I dreaming?

@Larrd that penalty call against him and the Bucs there was cr*p or did you see if differently. Just curious.

I thought, watching the games on Sunday, Wirfs wasn’t himself, in particular in the Broncos game – but going back and watching the ALL22, basically he had one play where it looked like his knee buckled or something – his leg just appeared to give out, was really odd. But watching the game live it looked like he got cleanly beat – but that wasn’t the case. In any case, it was a one-off. There’s been at least one other play where Wirfs might have got dinged for giving up a sack, but in fact he pushed the guy around the pocket – like you’re supposed to – but then Baker ran backwards out of the pocket right into the guy. Again, on TV, it looked most like he got beat, but on tape, he shoved the guy like 7 yards backwards, Baker just basically ran into him, was just bad luck.
Anyways, I will say, recent games, Wirfs has looked more like his dominate self, the best tackle in football. The idea that perhaps early on he was still getting used to the offense, that makes sense. The lineman move a lot more in his offense than they have in the past.

It was tickytacky, I agree. Wirfs is the best, but it had to be said once it was reported that he had disappeared from viewers’ attention. A character flaw of mine.
I do not think I have seen Wirfs so mad on the field as he was afterward. Hopefully the teams will meet again.

Soon, he will be put on defense on the line and then dropped into pass coverage.

@LakelandBuc
Wirfs is more than solid, he’s elite.

So true on all accounts. Never hearing their name during the broadcast is a big clue. Wirfs is getting better. And agree, cannot watch multiple games on a screen but can read and watch with no problems.
Crickett Baker Says: “After seeing how good the Ravens were, I thought losing by only 10 points was darn good. It was an exciting game until the horrid injuries.”
^Fully agree. The Ravens are predicted already to upstage KC. We did pretty good. Sadly, Mike was out early and Chris got a lasting injury. And it was a dirty play on top of it. Plus other injuries we had.
