Will ZYN Use Get Baker Mayfield Suspended?

October 23rd, 2024

The Kyle Trask commune has been stirring about this for a couple of days.

Simply stated, ESPN cameras appeared to catch Baker Mayfield popping a ZYN pouch on the bench during Monday’s game against the Ravens (video below).

For those unaware, ZYN is made of nicotine powder used to replace smokeless tobacco. No spitting. No smell. No bulge your mouth. Perfect for the college classroom.

The American Lung Association says it’s addictive and potentially dangerous. The NFL might say it’s a violation of league drug policy.

TMZ Sports reached out to the ZYN makers and a ZYN spokesperson urged Mayfield not to display the product where someone under 21 can see it — as in on TV.

Per TMZ, “NFL policy states players cannot use alcohol or tobacco products on the playing field and during interviews … which would technically include ZYN, as it contains powdered nicotine — derived from tobacco leaves.”

Joe isn’t sure that’s accurate, but Joe does know that the Bucs have crowed publicly with pride about how Raymond James Stadium, aka The Licht House, is a tobacco-free venue.

Hopefully, Roger Goodell is willing to let this slide, if it was ZYN Mayfield was using. The league has no problem with players sniffing ammonia on the sidelines and before games (Mayfield is a regular sniffer).

If not, either Mayfield will get a fat fine or Trask will make his first career start, or both.

    What is this communist russia?

  2. First Last Says:

lmao, I was waiting for this one. It has been covered so heavily. This man is a man of the people. But it would be absolutely hilarious if they fine him or give him a suspension for a few games. It would also confirm that the NFL wants their boy Kirko-Chainz in the playoffs.

  3. PieRat Says:

Funny. You can always catch a player with a lip full of dip from time to time on the sidelines during games. Sapp especially back in the day.

  4. infomeplease Says:

    Give me a break.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

So stupid! When millions are drinking smoking and do God knows what else while watching the game. Who cares.

Nicotine in those products are made synthetically. No tobacco leaves used. Same with vape juice.

  11. Crickett Baker Says:

    It isn’t tobacco. I don’t get all the hub-bub.

  12. Walkergodeep Says:

Not if you stop dry snitching joe.
“Dry snitching” LOL. This was on websites bigger than this one for 24 hours before Joe addressed it. If Joe was trying to be dramatic, Joe would have asked Mayfield about it at his news conference today. –Joe

  13. Tucker Says:

Looks like gum to me 🙄

  14. Let em Bake Says:

Expect int’s to occur, as The young Bucs learn ( by trial and error) how to run sharp routes….I expect Otton, who Baker trusts, to be his number one target for the foreseeable future. I also expect all the whiners to call for trask while this process unfolds…

  15. Rod Munch Says:

It’s a deep fake AI created video put out by the Saints.

  16. Tiff, Okla,Bake, Bucs 4 life Says:

  18. SB~LV Says:

Yawn… a warning behind the scenes at most.

  19. stpetebucfan Says:

I get a fine but any suspension would be absurd and could dramatically affect the outcome of the season for not just the Bucs but their opponents who won’t have to face the starting QB. This in turn then affects the standing for our opponents Divisional rivals.

  20. Simeon4HOF Says:

    LFZ lol

  21. Bucsfan81 Says:

This season just keeps getting better and better. Damn is Schiano back are we going back to that level of inept coaching and countability.

  22. Bowles4President Says:

    @Tiff, Okla,Bake, Bucs 4 life

With all due respect, and I do mean all due respect… Misspelling “EVANS” was least of what was grammatically wrong with that post. Not to hate, but bruh you can do better.

  23. BucsBeast Says:

Just FYI. Tomatoes have a high amount of nicotine in them also.

  24. Crickett Baker Says:

Ya. Bake did it to give himself halitosis so he had another weapon against a would-be sacker.

  25. pancake block Says:

i conjure up the picture of len dawson smoking a cigarette on the bench

  26. Dewey Selmon Says:

Len Dawson was smoking a heater during halftime of the SB.

  27. Nick Says:

Calm down…it’s a tobacco free nicotine alternative.

  28. Oxycondomns Says:

at least it wasnt a mouthful of zion

  29. Student of the Game Says:

This isn’t even as controversial as deflategate

  30. heyjude Says:

Okay, I have never even heard of ZYN and have never smoked. So i really don’t understand the addiction to tobacco. Read that you have to be over 21 to use this, although it says it’s tobacco free…

Maybe Baker smoked before and is trying to quit? Seems better than vaping. Don’t know a lot about it.

Hopefully, this isn’t a big deal, especially since many players light up cigars in the locker room when they have a big win. And to be honest, I bet the cameras miss a lot of other stuff going on down the sidelines and benches. Feel bad for Baker. People seem to always be trying to start crap about him when there are many others doing far worse.

  31. PSL Bob Says:

If it’s not AI, he looks rather sheepish in the video.

  32. PSL Bob Says:

Not that I give a crap either way. Jeeez!

  33. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Technically it does not include Zyn. A nicotine pouch is just that, not a Tobacco products. That’s like putting coffee and caffeine in the same bucket.

  34. Davenport Says:

Sometimes the NFL is a little too preachy. Let the guys plays ffs.

  35. JustVisiting Says:

    Beats spitting!

  36. Bucsfan Says:

For the comfort of our guests, smoking (including e-cigarettes, cigarettes, cigars, and vaporizers) and use of all tobacco products (including chewing tobacco) are prohibited inside the stadium. No vaping at RayJay.

  37. Ol' Boy Says:

Nicotine, while it can be addictive, can calm the mind and allows for clearer mental focus.

It’s not the drug that’s the problem but the usual delivery system. Smoking. Which is not the case here

  38. heyjude Says:

True that, Bucsfan. It’s the policy noted. These are pouches that would fall under tobacco products, but really not specified. I read more about the product. That worries me now too.

  39. Mac Says:

They will suspend him for the Taylor Swift Chiefs game. Not that we have a chance of beating them anyways but just another way they will aid the Chiefs like officials do seemingly every week lol

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

Mayfield is one of the best QBs in the League.
Track is a bench warmer with a pack of boy lovers.

Mayfield is most talented player left standing on this team. Any small hope we have left depends on Mayfields ability to throw to poor WRs.

If Trask had to play with this offense- he would be killed. He’s not half the QB Mayfield is.

  41. Jeffs grandpa Says:

    The pussification continues

  42. adam from ny Says:

suspend baker, yet let roquan ride after the godwin semi drop tackle ?

  43. Lightningvinny Says:

Golly what with all the NFL promoting gambling these days,,, certainly the 18 and under crowd doesn’t know what gambling is and it certainly isn’t addictive so I say in solidarity to our QB the Bucs hand out creamsicle colored ZYN at the game,,, talk the NFL to go spit ( no spitting w ZYN)

  44. Show Me the TDs Says:

The entire country smells like skunk and the NFL is worried about ZYN? Gimme a break!

  45. White Tiger Says:

Cool, when will NFL stadiums stop serving beer?

Will the ESPN stop taking advertising dollars from Modelo, Busch, or Budweiser?

If not, sure aounds like the League & ESPN are just shaking down ZYN for a more direct deposit.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Capt.Tim Says:
“If Trask had to play with this offense- he would be killed. He’s not half the QB Mayfield is.”

I won’t go so far as to say that…though you MIGHT be right.

They both have different styles of play, and certainly, Mayfield has a lot more experience.

But…we do not really know if Trask would develop badly or not.

If it came down to it, our OC should adjust the offense to fit whoever is throwing the ball, right?

Trask strikes me as more of a pocket passer than Mayfield. Given enough time, he might even prove to be more accurate than Mayfield.

I really don’t think he’d get that time though.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m not totally convinced the season isn’t over for us anyway. Losing both starting WRs is a pretty big blow.

    Hey, Joe.

Is there no “Dramatic” from you in this?

“The Kyle Trask commune has been stirring about this for a couple of days.”

Are we just not supposed to be a fans of our own players, All of our own players 1st string, 2nd string, 3rd, string, 4th, practice squad?
Does that make a Buccaneer fan a “commune” member? Just (enter the players name here) Buccaneer player fan.

Who would be next QB to play if Baker our QB #1 in NFL TD’s, where to get a suspension or somthing else. Jack Thompson, Gary Huff, Craig Erickson, Chuck Fusinia, Steve, DeBurg, Steve Young, Josh Johnson, Josh Mcown, Chris Simms, and plenty of others now it will be Kyle Trask at the Helm.

Been a fan of all of those former Buccaneer back-up QB’s. Sailing thru many a few to many, ugly seas, and super bowl champions seasons of supporting every Tampa Bay Buccaneers players. That doesn’t make me a “commune member” it makes me a Tampa Bay Buccaneers FAN!!!

As always NEXT MAN UP, let’s get ready to play to dominate and eat an early holiday bird.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!

  50. Jerseybuc Says:

Like alcohol at every single game plus commercials 🥴

  51. JK Says:

Rambling Rhino sure lives up to his handle!!!!

Dude nobody roots for the backups

  52. EasyEd Says:

The real question should be whether nicotine gives a player a competitive advantage. Does using it increase the amount of adrenaline in the blood stream, and if so is that significant enough to potentially enhance performance? If so, the method of introducing it into the body should not matter. Until the NFL announces that a valid scientific study conducted on athletes shows nicotine enhances adrenaline production to a degree that can improve performance, it needs to refrain from going beyond slap on the wrist fines for conduct policy violations (as a kid friendly enterprise we ban players from using nicotine delivery products on the field, because nicotine ain’t good for kids).

  53. Bake n Your Face Says:

This would be the weakest suspension ever handed down by the NFL. Pure politics..
