Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Continues To Fade

October 23rd, 2024

The numbers say Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is on pace for arguably the worst statistical season of his ho-hum, four-year career.

Joe wrote several times this offseason that Tryon-Shoyinka would be given plenty of rope in 2024 to see if he could break out in his contract year.

Maybe the Bucs would give him five or six games before handing his job to someone that doesn’t have 2,000 snaps under his belt, Joe said.

That hasn’t happened.

Durable Tryon-Shoyinka continues to start and to disappoint. He’s got one sack as an edge rusher and just two quarterback hits through seven games. His 14 combined tackles is a sad number. The Bucs get more production this season from his backup, Anthony Nelson.

Joe thinks it might be time to replace JTS in the starting lineup. Rookie Chris Braswell has seven games of experience and there’s Nelson, who has been more productive.

Joe wonders what preseason standout edge rusher José Ramirez thinks about all this. Poor guy can’t get a sniff as he’s benched behind very shaky edge rushers.

    He has to be furious

  2. Baker Bowl Says:

The only time I’ve noticed him this season is when he’s chasing someone down after a long play. It’s time to go. I hope Braswell plays, I haven’t noticed anything that makes me scream to start him like Buck and Tuck over Chaad but he’s a high draft pick, may as well give him the same leash we gave JTS

  3. Cometowin2 Says:

Demote him to special teams and.give Nelson or Braswell a shot. JTS performed better last year after being similarly benched.

    God bless Chris Godwin!!!

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

Another one of Licht 1st round draft picks that sucked like a QT coffee cup. That’s what really keeping us from advancing in this league.

    Our premium draft picks sucks

  5. Pops Malone Says:

I noticed JTS the other night! He was in pass coverage and almost broke up a pass thrown to the far sideline…..just what a pass rusher should be doing, right Coach Defensive Genious Bowles??? Put your edge guys in pass coverage….working out great these last few games…

  6. PSL Bob Says:

Hey, on the bright side, our o-line seems to be steadily improving. Hopefully, our run game will be strong enough to give our backup receivers opportunities to get open. Shepard, McMillan, and Palmer have got to elevate their game if we have any shot of making the playoffs. Season is not over, although it may be after Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

  7. NJbucs23 Says:

Dude is a wanna be football player. He’s an athlete, but can’t play football.

Our 2021 draft was awful, but I’ll give the FO the hiccup since we won Super Bowl. But, the 2021 draft has caught up to us.

  8. Buc4evr Says:

Jose needs to get a chance, or Bowles will be fired after the season. JTS was a dud from the start and a lot of us wanted him gone. Nothing new with this guy. Unfortunately Braswell hasn’t played much better. Sad state of affairs that I guess the Bucs are trying to ignore. Pathetic when coaches don’t promote based on performance.

  9. JustOneGame Says:

Can’t even blame JTS anymore. Maybe if he wasn’t dropping 15-20 yards in coverage half the game he would develop as a DE. Can’t really expect much from a 6’4” 265lbs CB….

Makes me wonder how the D would fare if we ran a traditional 4-3 with JTS, kancy, Vea and Diaby on the DL, David, Britt & Russel as LBs and our secondary as is. Couldn’t be worse than this disaster we continuously see

  10. Scott Says:

Meanwhile we could have been drafting some regular defensive ends not these tweener guys that hardly work out.

  11. Tucker Says:

Well he isn’t a pass rusher he is a cover guy I dunno why people are complaining how are you gonna get to the QB when you are dropping in coverage?
The guy rushes plenty. JPP and Shaq dropped in coverage, too.–Joe

  12. MelvinJunior Says:

Yeah, these guys have not stepped up. Just a huge disappointment. All of them, really.

  13. LakelandBuc Says:

If he’s dropping in coverage, then he sucks more.

How many PDs do he have?

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

JTS should have been gone before the season started. And Braswell does not show us much either. Of course, we have to see how he improves. But he has NOT..been an immediate impact player. They have known about this sorry A.. Defense for 2 or 3 yrs now. And Defense is supposed to be Todd Bowles specialty, right?

  15. Tucker Says:

Joe is bucs fourth cornerback out there and the middle of the field is still wide open maybe they should turn Yaya into our fifth cornerback on the field.

  16. BuxfaninTX Says:

It looks to me that he is dropping back in coverage quite a bit this year instead of true DE

  17. LakelandBuc Says:

Yaya, JT, Braswell,Nelson, they get a lot of pressure on the QBs.

    Sometimes lot of hits

But they lack in getting sacks, they can’t finish the job

They get a bunch of sacks against weak O-LINEs
Then go into a nut shell against good O-LINEs

  18. PowerOfPewter Says:

What is more concerning than JT-S’s declining play is that Chris Braswell hasn’t yet played well enough to take the starters job away. Neither has Nelson, although he has established himself a capable backup. The defense Bowles inherited, with Suh, JPP, Shaq, and LV-D, has steadily declined as they aged and left. With a few exceptions, the replacements have proven inadequate. Bowles hasn’t seemed able to right the capsizing ship, and if he can’t fix HIS defense or bring in a capable DC to fix the mess, is he even the right HC for the job?

  19. OHBucFan Says:

Time to try Braswell. Keeping with the theme of this week, JTS didn’t play during Covid. That was my issue with him then. Same deal now. Where’s your heart for your team and wanting to be great. It’s not there. Hopefully Braswell will be better. Got to try.

  20. Fred McNeil Says:

I think the main problem is the league has figured out Bowles’ scheme to a tee. There is almost always one or two guys who don’t get covered at all.

  21. Fred McNeil Says:

Same thing happened with the old Tampa Two. First most of the league copied it. Then most of the league solved it.

  22. Tony Says:

I’ve constantly said they need to give Ramirez a chance & whenever Watts returns they need to do the same with him, too!

  23. Badbucs Says:

Mediocre player in a terrible scheme. You don’t have to have other guys cover his area, you just don’t get great production. Other players are leaving their responsibilities to cover up for Britt. Until he gives them a concussion piling on.

  24. Beeej Says:

Look all through the second and third round of the 2021 draft, tell me who you would have drafted instead of him, I just hardly see any names I recognize

  25. BUCS4EVER Says:

    BUST

  26. Baker Bowl Says:

Beeej – Man, look again, even at just edge alone there’s 3 that I would take in a heartbeat. I would say about 30% of the picks in rounds 2-3 would have been a good snag at the end of the first.

  27. Trey Says:

He’s always near the ball, always. But he never actually makes the play.

  28. al Says:

What’s the chances of the Bucs using all of their picks next year on all defensive players? 100%?

  29. Beeej Says:

    Ok, azeez ojulari is better

  30. J Says:

    JTS needs to retire.

  31. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Braswell has a ways to go. Our bigger problem in my opinion is the lack of bulk, and strength, on the DL, Vea notwithstanding. Vea was largely ineffective. We got run over Monday night and were useless only rushing 4. I would prefer a 4-3 with more size but Bowles like the 3-4 because of the variety of blitzes are greater. I’m probably correct though. Can’t cover anyone either but that’s not what Jose was writing about.

  32. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    “Largely ineffective”. Almost funny.

  33. A Bucs Fan Says:

Yeah to make matters worse Sirvocea Dennis is effectively out for the season too. Bowles revealed he has the same chance as Godwin to return with a deep playoff push.

  34. We Make Custom Teez Says:

I’m not a JTS fan, but it seems to me he’s always in coverage…. I would be curious to know the percentage of times Bowls drops him into coverage this season.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

    He sucks!

  36. SlyPirate Says:

DID YOU KNOW: How many sacks do you need to lead the team this year?

    3 – THREE!!!!!!!!

In 7 games. Hutch had 4.5 in 1 game against us.

Who has 3 sacks? LVD, Hall, VV

NOT 1 OLB. Not Yaya, JTS, or Braz. This can’t be an OLB. It has to be scheme, coaching, and player development.

  37. Henry Says:

Ouch….!!!!!!!! A piece of sky just hit me in the head!

  38. Jack Sparrow Says:

    Bucs defense SUCKS !!!

  39. Deadwood South Dakota Says:

Funny you said that Joe because I noticed a couple times he’s always late to the party and the way he joggers over you think he would know better. But that’s the coach and decision and we know how our coaches are.

  40. Lightningvinny Says:

He’s the guy we all know at work that is running around furiously ,, looks super busy but really isn’t doing anything ,, he’s the looks busy guy

  41. heyjude Says:

I was one that thought this would be JTS season. Disappointed.

  42. Badbucs Says:

I’m afraid Braswell may be the Britt of the OLBs. Hope I’m wrong. Another just good enough to get you beat guy.

  43. Pewter Power Says:

It was a joke to hope a guy would break out just because he was in a contract season to begin with but that’s licht and Braswell just looking at his body type he looks more like an inside linebacker.

  44. Simeon4HOF Says:

He and Hall, the 2 busts Bowles signed of on to be starters in His defense.

  45. Will Says:

And this is another problem with Bowels TAKES WAY TOO LONG TO ADJUST and admit when there’s an issue with his guys on defense. BUT look how quick he waived Camarda during his slump. When you talk with him about the defense it’s always a communication issue never that his guys just aren’t getting it done.

  46. Jmoneysports Says:

Article of the day. The last sentence about Ramirez says it all. Ramirez is the guy that needs to be next to Diaby

  47. al Says:

just another draft bust by the worst gm in the nfl.

  48. Tony Says:

    @J

He needs to go back to Washington.

  49. ElioT Says:

    JTS is a bum.

It’s gotta suck to be that horrible at your job.

  50. Esteban85 Says:

But Joe he’s a chess piece!

Demote his arse to special teams and start Braswell. Edge rushers should be rushing the quarterback not tackling 25 yards downfield!

  51. Esteban85 Says:

Al you’re an Fing idiot bro

  52. Sacker58 Says:

At on point in the Ravens game Joe Trying Shoyinka came around the ravens right tackle as Jackson was fleeing 10 yards ahead .JTS was running g with his hands in the air like he was going to get to jackson, but not a sniff.Terrible!

  53. Destinjohnny Says:

Doesn’t have the body for the nfl.
    Just isn’t strong enough

  54. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I defended JTS when he was drafted. Boy was I wrong. His play has been disappointing at best. He’s just there. Very little contribution. He would have been bounced already if he wasn’t over drafted.

  55. Capt.Tim Says:

Jason Licht should have admitted JTS is a bust, cut him, and used the money to sign a football player. Meybe one that can rush a QB once in in a while.
But instead, his pride makes him keep hanging on to a player who doesn’t appear to give a damn about football.

    And it’s costing us

  56. dmatt Says:

Pops Malone says: I noticed JTS the other night! He was in pass coverage and almost broke up a pass thrown to the far sideline…..just what a pass rusher should be doing, right Coach Defensive Genious Bowles??? Put your edge guys in pass coverage….working out great these last few games…

Pops Malone, I watched that play with my 17 yr old son n he agreed with me that at 6’5, JTS should’ve intercepted that pass had he came up off his feet. He is a lackadaisical type player. For the last 4 yrs, he falls under the realm of an almost should’ve made that play type of player. JTS, Dean, n Britt needs to be done.

  57. BUCS4EVER Says:

but we have the most drafted players playing…right???

Licht? Bowles? Someone owns this mess

  58. Leopold Stotch Says:

Theres a problem with this argument, Joe… You and everyone else expect JTS to be an edge rusher and get after the qb. Todd Bowles, does not. As our edge rushers drop into coverage. So JTS will stay on the field.

  59. Dave Pear Says:

    2 things.

    1. Dude doesn’t love football
    2. He sucks
    B. He’s more interested in male cosmetics as a career. It’s obvious by the way he looks and plays.

  60. Capt.Tim Says:

    Leopold,
We expect JTS to be a good Pass rusher, because both Coach Bowles andGM Licht keep telling us he will be.
And they send him almost every play. And it’s always the same result.
JTS gets a fast take off, but the tackle gets his hands on JTS should, and pushes him past the pocket. It is so common, that I do a double take if JTS doesn’t go drifting by

  61. orlbucfan Says:

Put JTS in that position Britt plays. LVD is going to retire soon. It would be an interesting deal that Raheem Morris would not expect. The team is humiliated. It happens cos they aren’t robots. They beat the Falcons and it will be like last season.
