Baker Mayfield Getting Good Pass Blocking
October 23rd, 2024This is right up the alley for the folks who constantly stomp their feet about the Bucs’ offensive line.
It seems Baker Mayfield is benefitting from damn good pass blocking.
After seven weeks of the NFL season, Mayfield, the Bucs quarterback, leads the NFL in touchdowns thrown (18), is second in yards thrown (1,859) and third in completion percentage (70.5).
Joe doesn’t care what the quarterback’s name is; any time a team gets that kind of production from its quarterback, that is excellent.
And it may be because of the time Mayfield has to throw. While the stats below come from the PFF tribe, it seems only two quarterbacks have had enjoyed a higher percentage of throws from clean pockets than Mayfield. That’s Anthony Richardson of the Colts and drama queen Aaron Rodgers of the Jets.
This is pretty good since the Bucs have two new starters on the front line, a new offensive coordinator and a new offensive line coach.
Joe typed in the summer that the full affect of the remade offensive line wouldn’t be seen until about Thanksgiving because it takes a while for an offensive line to round into form. That appears to be taking place.
So solid job by offensive coordinator Liam Coen, offensive line coach Kevin Carberry and the Bucs’ offensive line.

A much needed positive.
Thanks Joe!
I’d noticed that our O-line has been a pleasant surprise.

Well, they have shown some improvement.
Mauch in particular has made some strides.
We have the best pair of Tackles in the league.
Bredeson is who he will always be. A hard working good technician. Cursed with short arms that will cause him to be average best.
Barton is still overwhelmed. He has moments of greatness, but more moments of confusion.
But all in all they have taken a step forward. And Liam is running behind the tackles a lot more- and that’s a winning proposition.
Next year,we will still need a guard. Meybe two.
But Center and Tackles will be fortresses.
I hope the line keeps showing improvement. We have the potential of a great line, add in our fantastic QB, and we will have a bright future.
Now we gotta fix the WR position.
Can you say Cooper Kupp?

After the sadness, it is good to see the positives. The Bucs have a strong future. Looking forward to Thanksgiving!

When Oline held the best and longest cleanest pocket, baker threw an interception. Twice!

From that chart, it looks like Richardson had the least clean pocket percentage but his teammate Joe Flacco had the most clean pocket. Curious as they both have the same line. It’s either small sample size OR quick throws skew the clean pocket percentage as the D line doesn’t have a chance to disrupt. I’m going with the quick throws because the eye test seems like if it’s not a quick throw, Baker is having to dodge 2-3 defenders. Rarely does it seem long routes are developing and there is time to throw to them.

If you can figure most of these charts out, more power to you. I get the X axis part. Mayfield has a clean pocket to throw from on slightly more than 60% of the time. But what is that plotted against on the Y axis? I mean, based on this chart how would you interpret the stats for Jalen Hurts, for example? Good or Bad?

Look for Baker to throw more ints now, Macmillan sucks he hangs Baker out to dry all the time

McMillan is a rookie and still learning. I was disappointed he didn’t try to knock the ball down on that interception though. Just kind of let it happen. I’m confident that Mayfield will be able to get it done with whoever we have on the field. Very important game coming up this Sunday. Hopefully we can get the run defense fixed in time.

@StickinUpForCenters: 100% correct – these stats are way skewed by our short-yardage get the ball out quick passing game. When we try to run longer patterns, about 50% of the time Baker is getting chased out of the pocket. But we only run those maybe 10% of the time. So, overall, it looks like good protection… Its NOT.
