Jarvis Landry And The Bucs

October 22nd, 2024

In these desperate times for the Buccaneers’ receivers room, Joe thinks it’s wise to take a Sterling Shepard mindset and look at one receiver for which Baker Mayfield has tremendous respect.

That guy is free agent Jarvis Landry, the five-time Pro Bowler.

Joe has heard Mayfield speak publicly about the professionalism of Landry, with whom he played four seasons in Cleveland. Landry caught more than 250 balls from Mayfield and made two Pro Bowls with Mayfield as his QB.

Landry was out of football injured last year but worked out for at least the Jaguars and Jets as recently as this summer. Joe has heard 31-year-old speak multiple times and he seems very Chris Godwin-like in his approach to the game.

Joe has no illusions that Landry is capable of regaining his elite form, but the Bucs need a guy that can hit the ground running, someone who knows offenses and won’t need to half a season to figure out how to play with his new quarterback.

Landry, assuming his relationship with Mayfield is solid, is worth a phone call and a workout.

What’s the point? We have the depth already, why take snaps away from TP10 and JMAC when they need the development

  2. Marky Mark Says:

Fine but give Ryan miller a shot. Otten and sheperd looked great in second half

  3. Marky Mark Says:

Stop the acronyms. Who the hell is TP10 and JMAC?

  4. BallHawk75 Says:

Why not put the opponents jersey on all our receivers instead.

The Caucasian version of Winston will have better odds that way.

    Somebody gon catch it!

  5. WanderingWallflower Says:

There’s no doubt there will be at least one receiver added. Landry is likely the best free option. Now, who we want in a trade? Just think, two superstars just moved. The price is set. Should be able to snag someone.

  6. Baker Bowl Says:

Stop the acronyms. Who the hell is TP10 and JMAC

Trey Palmer, Jalen McMillan. My bad bossman I’ll make sure to behave myself with the acronyms.

  7. Jeagan1999 Says:

It SUCKS the Evans and Godwin are hurt….BUT WE ARE STILL TIED FOR THE LEAD IN OUR DIVISION!! Baltimore is a great team….they beat us, now lets move on!! Call Landry and get him in here for a tryout!! Call the Rams and see how much they want for Cooper Kupp!! We still have a division to WIN!!!!

  8. NJbucs23 Says:

Trey Palmer can’t play. There’s a reason he was a sixth round pick. This is why you have a practice squad. Miller, Knue, Thompson, here’s your opportunity!!

  9. Baking with Coen Says:

MM you should know TP10 and JMAC. LOL

  10. John Sinclear Says:

Please – dump the acronyms. There’s no shame in speaking English!

  11. Josh Says:

I’m really frustrated with Joe’s approach; it often feels like he writes just for the sake of writing, lacking genuine belief in the content he produces. There’s no way he thinks this is a good idea. This is insulting and ascribes motives to Joe’s work. Joe doesn’t tell you how to be a fan. It seems you are making the leap that Joe is saying to sign Landry and put him on the field for 70 percent of the snaps. Nowhere was that implied or written. But yes, Joe is fine with veteran players and it doesn’t mean that the veteran will stunt the development of the young guys. In fact, veterans often will enhance it. If Landry can contribute, then sign him. He’ll no doubt be playing at a rock bottom price. The Bucs need quality bodies at receiver, and wins, unless they reach the point where the draft and 2025 become the primary goal. –Joe

Instead of focusing on developing our young talent and building toward the future, there seems to be overwhelming pressure to win a Super Bowl this year. This season has been tough, with injuries significantly impacting the team.

The Bucs should prioritize developing our existing talent while remaining competitive. If they discover a hidden gem like Godwin or McCollum, that would be fantastic. However, given our injury challenges and gaps in the offensive and defensive lines, along with a glaring hole at middle linebacker, it seems unrealistic to expect immediate success. We must accept where the Bucs are and plan accordingly. While bringing in Landry might win another game or two, the overarching goal should be clear: it’s not just about winning the Super Bowl this year. Teams need to acknowledge that not every year will end in victory. Some teams still haven’t even made it to the Super Bowl. We need to build for the future and develop young talent. Hopefully, Evans isn’t too hurt, and we can get him back for a shot at the playoffs. We should focus on making a run with our young players this year. If Landry were truly the answer, he would have been on the roster already, like Sheppard. Grier is on the roster, but Bowles won’t play him. Bringing in Landry could hinder the development of McMillian and Palmer. The reward just doesn’t seem worth hindering that development.

  12. Jeff Says:

Zero chance the Bucs land a WR to replace Godwin. Never will happen. They’ll go get some practice squad trash to replace him. Folks, the season is over. Time to close up shop.

  13. Rican Says:

If you’re gonna sign someone get Hunter Renfrow.

  14. Baking with Coen Says:

I’m all for giving the backups more playing time.

A shot at the Super Bowl is now shifted to 2025.

Let’s Tuck, Buck, White and Bake!!!

  15. BucsFan81 Says:

I would go after Kupp even if you give up a 3rd rounder. Laundry is washed he is no upgrade the backups would give better production.

  16. Baker Bowl Says:

Please – dump the acronyms. There’s no shame in speaking English!

No John, TP and JMAC are their initials, keep up big dawg because typing whole names takes too much time and time = money

  17. Steve Says:

    I like the idea.

But there is also value to going to war with Ryan Miller, Kody, Rakim, and the other guys that have been here. Sign Jarvis to the practice squad and see if he can get up to speed by the end of the bye week.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We can trade or bring in another FA…..wondering if AB has stayed in shape.

  19. Let em bake Says:

Cole Beasley ….trained with baker last pre season.

  20. heyjude Says:

Give Jarvis a chance and see what he can do. He was put on IR in 2022 due to an ankle injury. Won’t hurt to see how he is now.

Let em bake – Respectfully, I am at a no to Beasley. He already had his chance with the Bucs and retired and then came out of retirement to go to the Bills, and then the Giants. Sounds like some drama there and plus I think he is 35 now.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

Without a defense it won’t matter if we sign Jerry Rice in his prime..

  22. LVMYBUCS Says:

I just dont know what happens to the bucs after 1st q its like they just stall out until the 4th. This is why I think its Bowles fault he need to be in there face pumping them up as much as possible instead he is calling d plays and looking lost on the side line

  23. BuckyBuc Says:

Ryan miller and cody thompson, let them play. They both showed promise

  24. kgh4life Says:

What about trading for Mike Williams from the Jets? he’s available since they signed Devante Adams.

  25. Lightningvinny Says:

Hey any option is worth a look,,, but if the D gives up 40plus does it matter

  26. Bucsfan Says:

Tanner Knue who knows the offense and performed well in preseason sounds better.

  27. Baker Bowl Says:

What about trading for Mike Williams from the Jets?

Yeah he’d be hurt after the second week of practice. No point

  28. CChead Says:

Chase Claypool is a fa. About same size as Mike. If hes healthy why not try him out? While they are at it. Go grab Rashaan Evans off the Falcons practice squad.

  29. Jackson Says:

The Bucs have a lot more problems than receiver. If the defense doesn’t get fixed, it doesn’t matter what happens on offense. On offense however, No one not on a roster right now is going to come in and help this offense much. Give the young receivers a chance to grow, and see who emerges. If and when Mike comes back, then you should have good idea of who the #2 and #3 are. The Chiefs do not have an elite receiver, but creative game plans and play calling keeps them winning. Of course it doesn’t hurt that they have an elite defense and some Mahomes guy.

  30. Zoocomics Says:

@Josh…valid points. If this was in the last quarter of the season and our playoff hopes were done, then I would say you argument is even stronger and JBF wouldn’t have bothered with this article.

The fact is, it’s too early in the season with EVERYTHING still on the line. I agree with JBF that this young group of receivers is 1. Not ready for WR1/2 roles, or 2. Might only be WR3/WR4 type of receivers. Thompkins and Rakim are both undrafted, it’s wishful think they’re next Chris Godwin. Not sure what Landry is asking for his services, but he’s a certified WR1. Not sure if he still is, but in this offense, we just need guys to run good routes, get separation and have good hands. I certainly feel a lot better moving forward with him on the roster teaming up with Sheppard. It’s almost laughable we’d be putting hopes on 2 guys who’s careers were drastically altered due to a consistent injury history, and now they may be healthy enough to carry our offense!?…smh.

I agree that every year is not a championship year BUT do you know the Bucs’ window for winning a championship? Have you looked at the contracts, and the age of the players, rookie contracts, etc. Personally, I really don’t know when it is. I learned a lot during the Brady era when it comes to a team going all-in for a championship. The formula is really too difficult to sort out other than you CANNOT pay all your talent coming off rooking contracts, that’s kind of your window. If White would have balled out last year, you think we could have afforded his and Winfield’s contract? He would have wanted $20M per. Sadly, he did us a favor. When 6/7 players take the king’s ransom of the salary cap, and the rest of the squad is filled with draft picks and undrafted free agents. That’s why it’s so huge that you have to hit on draft picks like JTS and Hall, when they turn into JAGs, our current def line’s performance is what you get. Really, this window/championship formula is very difficult to solve unless you have an anchor like Patrick Mahomes. Patriots enjoyed the same succes with Brady anchoring them for 2 decades. Point is, I’d like to see us make a move. We haven’t done a whole lot to address our deficiencies on def. Not one thing.

  31. Bucsfan81 Says:

I know someone didn’t reference the chiefs and them coming up with plays with no star WR. They actually have. one of the best coaches in football in Andy Reid. Bowles can’t compete with half the coaches in this league dude constantly gets out coached.

  32. StormyInFl Says:

Those guys – MacMillan, Palmer and the rest of the no names are scrubs.

Why in the hell would anyone want to watch that, over bringing in some experience and maybe salvaging this dumpster fire?

As for the defense, the biggest weakness is the defensive coordinator. He’s proven time and again he’s not very good and this defense is now bottom five.

  33. Greg Says:

Here’s a news flash: The offense it’s not the problem!

  34. JustOneGame Says:

Not sure how a receiver helps our Defense. More worried about getting a guy who can cover in space, a guy who can rush the passer and set the edge or just someone who can coach defense.

If they can get by Atl, Mike will be back and others will have to step up for Godwin. If they’re looking to bring anyone in it should a D-coordinator, LB or DE.

  35. JustOneGame Says:

Maybe they should try out some of our DBs and LBs at WR. They seem to be allergic to other people, maybe they can create the same separation on offense as they do when playing D.

  36. Idroolpewter&red Says:

If I were calling the shots, I’d see if LA was interested in dealing Cooper Cupp. Rams use him the same way the Bucs use Godwin, and he knows Coen’s system. Rams are not on a Super Bowl run, and we are (or were until last night).

  37. Kenny Says:

I dont want to make the Joes sound stupid here, but I follow the NFL, not just the Bucs.

Hasnt Landry been sitting on his couch for like 2 or 3 years? And before that, wasnt he like basically a part time player? cmon. The Bucs, and no other team in the NFL is looking at Landry. When was the last time he did something special? When Baker was in high school?

First, Joe outlined Landry’s recent past. Second, one could have said the same thing about Sterling Shepard and he’s contributed. Nobody wrote or implied that Landry would be a savior, but he’s certainly worth evaluating with the season on the line and the Bucs in need of a guy who could hit the ground running.–Joe

  38. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

You know acronyms are part of the American language right??? If you can figure out lol pick up a team flyer and maybe you can figure out TP10, it stands for 10 rolls of Toilet Paper!

  39. Buc4evr Says:

McMillian is definitely a scrub. The guy has terrible hands. Jarvis would be a good option. Palmer is invisible, route running is suspect.

WTH are the Bucs going to do about the pathetic defense? The CBs are pathetic and LBs are slow. This is what happens when you stick with guys like Britt, JTS and to some extent Hall. We are right back into the Jameis Winston era defense.

  40. Baker Bowl Says:

McMillian is definitely a scrub. The guy has terrible hands. Jarvis would be a good option. Palmer is invisible, route running is suspect.

How would Jarvis Landry be a good option? Please actually explain why we should spend money on him and not on other gaping holes on the team, when we already have young, high-ceiling guys at reciever?

  41. Ed Says:

So many of previous points are well taken. There is no doubt a team that has given up 500 yards to 2 different teams and let a rookie QB on an invisible offense (Denver) beat them, that comes down to a defense that isn’t good at all.

The Buc’s defensive coaching has been terrible, there are very few teams that leave the middle of the field so wide open. Do they still coach leverage on the pass rushing guys. JTS doesn’t hit people, they don’t gang tackle and they don’t communicate in the secondary.

Offensively they have to change up the offense because there is no security blanket for Mayfield with Godwin and the 2 smurfs, Palmer and MacMillan are not physically able to go over the middle. They are going to have to take more shots downfield as speed is all those 2 guys have. They need to replace White with Tucker as he is the most physical back they have. They need to use White like the Niners use Debo Samuels and they have to run some trick plays like direct snaps to White when he is in the backfield with Tucker or Irvin.

Bowles has to show defensive improvement right away. It starts with the defense being more physical. I’m OK with the touchdown MacMillan gave up on the deep ball. He was beat by a good move and a perfect throw, those things happen. What I’m not OK with is seeing Mark Andrews wide open 25 yards downfield and rumbling another 15 yards. Seeing Derrick Henry have 2 runs of over 50 yards is another thing. Its ok for him to get 5-6 yard runs, he is a HOF, but not having linebackers and edge players that can cover the outside runs is poor play and poor coaching, they are out of position and missing assignments. Teach them some discipline to keep gap integrity.

  42. Ed Says:

Didn’t mean MacMillan on touchdown, that was McCollum, easy to get these Irishmen mixed up.

  43. Hodad Says:

Can Landry cover on the back end? Seems we need better DB’s if we’re going to have a chance at winning. We can’t cover, and after 2 early sacks, Lamar had all the time in the world back there. Same with Cousins. Time for a QB to throw to receivers, tight ends, and backs wide arse open, wait we need a receiver? Better fix the elephant in the room named Bowles. He’s the defensive genius? We won’t beat many teams with a defense this bad.

  44. Allbuccedup Says:

    Whats OJ Howard doing now?

  45. gbobucsfan Says:

    Hunter Renfrow

  46. Let ‘em bake Says:

Methinks Cade will become a high target guy ala Kielce. Durham should begin to get more reps to give Cade a rest between snaps. Thx for the Beasley age reveal…didn’t know he was 35😊

  47. Tony Says:

They might want to use Kameron Johnson more now whenever he gets back, too! Dude looks like he’s got the talent if they just use him more. They could probably use him in different ways, too!

  48. Tony Says:

IT’S GONNA BE MICHAEL CLAYTON TIME AGAIN!😀 EITHER HIM OR ANTONIO IS COMING BACK!🤦 He’s not doing anything. I’m sure he’s been pretty busy with Diddy & that baby oil.

  49. stpetebucfan Says:

    BakerBuc

Largely agree. I’m kind of meh on this. If Jason and Todd think it’s correct fine.
    If not fine.

BTW BB I hope you can figure I’m addressing you Baker Buc but I knew who you were talking about. I guess I’ve pisssed a lot of guys off by saying ME13 and CG14.

  54. ThatAintRight!! Says:

Ha, it’s funny y’all all wanting to talk about our offense and ignoring that we need defensive help all season. Now more and more people are talking about how our defense is a problem.

Also the Godwin and evens thing certainly sucks, but we need a true outside WR.
Godwin is so special because he can play inside and outside giving the offense and QB different looks consistently throughout games.

Nobody on this roster is going to come anywhere close to them guys. Shepherd and Jalen MCMillan not winning us games. Trey Palmer isn’t winning us games.

Yeah so they need development reps. You know what that means in my book?
It means they ain’t ready yet and aren’t gonna help us win games.

Mike Evans has had hamstring injuries for quite some time throughout his career. That’s been his problem most of his career. He really should have someone who specializes in that area look at so he can stay at 100%.

If we are looking at getting a WR I would be calling Michael Thomas. Former Saints WR. He’s the closest kind of talent to Godwin we can get imo.

  55. Baker Bowl Says:

If we are looking at getting a WR I would be calling Michael Thomas. Former Saints WR. He’s the closest kind of talent to Godwin we can get imo.

I might contemplate biting a curb and having someone stomp on the back of my head multiple times if this ever came close to happening.

  56. Lightningvinny Says:

I think give the jags a few days Kirk can be had ,,, Higgins is a pipe dream,, Landry ,no, obviously who wouldn’t take Kupp,,,, but I think Kirk and Mike could work good together (Jags stink and they got Thomas ),,
All that said,,,, leave the offense alone , use the guys we have and Get D guys (Garrett, Crosby, Shaq, White, the other Josh Allen) you could not make this D worse ,,, and I got give JTS a compliment for his speed ,,, he seems to always be the one in the picture 30 yards down field chasing someone ,,, Bowles D schemes may be outdated(Remember when Kiffen system was outdated) ,,,

  57. Bobby Says:

Why not kick the tires on WR Michael Thomas???

  58. Rod Munch Says:

Landry was a good player at one time, many years ago, but has had chances to play over the last few years and clearly lost a step. I certainly wouldn’t object to bringing him in for a workout just to kick the tires, however.

I’d call the Broncos about Courtland Sutton – he’s a very good player stuck on an offense that doesn’t throw the ball. However the Broncos have won just enough games that I don’t think they’d get rid of him at the moment.

Also check with the Jets about Mike Williams – he should be available for almost nothing.

More names… Jerry Jeudy of the Browns, although they just got him, not sure it works cap wise for Cleveland to move him.

Russell Gage is another name. If he’s healthy, he’s a good player. No idea if he’s healthy though.

Jakobi Meyers of the Raiders is another guy who might be a decent starter, and has a cheap deal. However the Raiders don’t have anything else at WR so I’m not sure they’d give him up for a late rounder.

Personally I have some faith that McMillan, given a few weeks to grow into the position, can be a productive WR, but you need depth, and Shepard has really fallen off already and is due to get injured at any moment, and Palmer is just a gimmick player. Speaking of which, is Scotty Miller available?

  59. Baker Bowl Says:

Why not kick the tires on WR Michael Thomas???

Obviously my comment was dramatic, but I just don’t see the point… He’s gonna affect the locker room, he’s way past his prime, hasn’t played for the Saints in a minute, slant merchant, just doesn’t add a whole lot to the offense that really isn’t the issue with the team.

Why not kick the tires on WR Michael Thomas???

    ———–

I think he’s done, injuries just destroyed his career, but no reason not to bring in everyone that is willing to show-up.

Another name, if we’re going back to the Landry days at this point – what about Adam Humphries?

Also Terrell Owens keeps saying he can still play, bring him in.

Heck, give Jon Gruden a nod and bring in Andre Rison as well.

Literally they should invite everyone who will show-up and just see what happens, if anyone stands out.

  61. Rod Munch Says:

    Baker Bowl Says:
He’s gonna affect the locker room

    ———-

This is a veteran locker room that won a SB, and they won it with Antonio Brown playing a big role.

You win with talent, not by having the nicest locker room.

With that said, I assume Thomas is washed up, but I’d still give him a call if he’s in shape and wants to play.

  62. Baker Bowl Says:

You win with talent, not by having the nicest locker room.

I agree, but I do think our team chemistry is one of if not our biggest strength as a team. Now, Antonio Brown was definitely a situation but that was also the Tom Brady bucs which I assume kept AB in check a little. I just don’t like the idea of someone like Michale Thomas who still thinks he should get paid like a top WR coming in and trying to take the spot from one of the best and most respected players in that facility.

Also, I aggresively dislike the Saints and Michael Thomas so take what I say with a grain of salt.

  63. GoneGator Says:

We just became a run 1st, play action team. 😳

  64. okiejim Says:

If the Buc’s players and coaches have the mindset that fans have posted on this site that the season is over, then the season is over! If you hear of a players meeting only, then the true leaders of the team have put it on the line to be as competitive as possible.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

Baker Bowl – I’m not making the case for Thomas as I think he’s washed up as well, but who is to say he’d act the same? Also the type of deal you’d sign with these guys means you’d just cut them at the first sign of trouble.

I’m just saying no one should be off the table at this point, not if the team thinks of itself as a legit playoff contender.

  66. Baker Bowl Says:

Munch – Fair, in your opinion though, do you think we should be looking at WR options? Obviously I’m not in the front office, but when I look at the roster there’s more apparent holes elsewhere, especially when as an offense we’re putting up 30 pretty consistently and still losing games.

  67. Lightningvinny Says:

Pittsburg says a good D masks a lot of weakness ,,, We are much better them on offense still,,,, but we are not 1/2 of what they are on D ,,, we do t need the O to score 30+ a game we need the D to hold teams to 20 a game ,, pipe dream

  68. Lightningvinny Says:

Heck Mahomes is playing just OK and they are undefeated ,,, let’s go Bowles ,,,,

  69. Pewter Power Says:

Even without Chris Godwin and Mike Evans I trust the offense more than I trust Todd Bowles defense.

  70. Buc1987 Says:

    We’re all doomed!

  71. GoneGator Says:

    J. Landry was only decent in Cleveland. Fairly tough with decent hands but no speed or ability to separate and that was several years ago.

  72. Rod Munch Says:

With everything above out of the way… the Bucs will just sign Cody Thompson off the practice squad and call it a day. You can’t be trading away future 7th round picks – those things are super valuable.

  73. John Says:

    trade jets for mike willams.

  74. StickinUp4Centers Says:

    Go get Antonio Brown.

  75. Buccanstopit Says:

Kupp-Rams want 2nd and he makes too much money and cannot stay healthy

  76. TheMightyVH Says:

No on Landry. If compensation is right Bucs need to trade for Garrett Wilson or Cooper Kupp. Wilson is a stud playing for an inept organization. On 3rd year of rookie deal. Then you have Kupp, who has battled injuries. He would prove to be cheaper than Wilson because of age and injury history. So again, depends on asking price.
Mike Williams is intriguing because he has shown signs in past but has done virtually nothing this season for NYJ. Not sure there is much else out there. Bucs need to figure out a way to win without Big Mike (I would imagine through the bye week???) and Chris for rest of season. Good teams, good coaches – figure it out. My primary concern is our God awful defense. Wont matter unless we beat the Falcons Sunday.

  77. adam from ny Says:
