Serious And Senseless Injury To Chris Godwin

October 21st, 2024

Prayers are with Chris Godwin tonight.

He suffered a major ankle injury with the game out of reach. Why he was on the field, Joe has no idea.

Joe says and writes this often: When a game is effectively over, pull your best players and don’t be stupid. But the Bucs didn’t go that route tonight. They exposed their top offensive players and paid a price.

It’s not like this was a divisional round playoff game and the Bucs were within one score with seconds to play. Oh, wait …

Earlier this season, Antoine Winfield Jr. was lost for weeks to a foot injury with a Bucs win clearly in the bag.

Today, it was Godwin’s turn — on 3rd-and-17 from the Bucs’ 18 yard line trailing by 10 with no timeouts. And that came after Mike Evans already was lost to a significant injury in the first quarter of the 41-31 loss to the Ravens.

The irony of Baker Mayfield getting blitzed on the final meaningless drive and hit on the game’s final play wasn’t lost on Joe.

Joe hopes Team Glazer enjoys coaches exposing their greatest assets against a hard-hitting team for no good reason.

Joe is digging a grave for fans’ Super Bowl dreams.

  1. Godlovesbucs Says:

Losing Evans and Godwin for the season is a season ender for the bucs.

  2. Cbell96825 Says:

Heart ripped out on one play!

  3. Dom Says:

My heart breaks for Godwin. In a contract year the Bucs failed him having him still out there. Completely reckless. Total disaster of a night that will cost the Bucs their season

  4. Steve Says:

Bowles has dessimated a great team.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

It was a great 1/3 of a season. Bucs could lose 4 of their next 5 then pull a mini winning streak before splitting with NO to finish… 8-9. No way they win 10 games without Evans or Godwin. Gosh, that Godwin injury just SUCKS.

  6. StormyInFl Says:

Hopefully, it’s a career ender for Bowles, too.

What a clown. He’s not even a good defensive coordinator.

  7. Ben the GA Buc Says:

We’re cooked. Simple as that. But I will still watch and cheer.

  8. Miller5252 Says:

You lose Evans, Evans 1000 yard year is over, give up 500+ yards again and get Godwin injured for no reason. Heck of a night guys!! Bowles showing everyone on prime time why he should never be a head coach again

  9. LVMYBUCS Says:

No reason for starters to be in the game. Take the loss and move on Bowles has destroyed this team from day one.

  10. StormyInFl Says:

And not even trying to get some payback on Roquan Smith. Gutless.

  11. Simeon4HOF Says:

Per bowels lost the heartbeat of our Offense 2nite. Season done. Bowels never treated Godwin right.

  12. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

    Im sick to my stomach.

  13. Chris Says:

    Evans should’ve never suited up
Godwin should’ve never been in the game
Does Bowles just not care about his star players. With Godwin down for the year the season is over same thing happened when we lost Godwin when we had Brady. All they’ll do is double cover Mike and it’s a win

  14. BUC4L Says:

Season is over. Best bet is to sacrifice the season for best defensive player in draft. Go Bucs! Let’s come back strong! This has been a long crappy summer. No hope.

  15. Thelastbuscs Says:

I was okay with the loss….now I just feel sick.

  16. Avejoe85 Says:

Bowels deserves to be fired following this injury. Having CG14 out there in garbage time makes about as much since as a swift kick in the nuts.

  17. Proudbucsfan Says:

I feel like it’s over, welcome back to a lost decade. I’ll still be a Bucsfan, it’s tough to deal with.

  18. Mickman Says:

Don’t make assumptions that Godwin did not want to remain in the game. That seems to be the personality of the entire team this year. I realize the coach makes the decision but sometimes you do what the group wants.

  19. LVMYBUCS Says:

Why ME in the game Bowles u idiot this not a playoff game u want him hurt even more so we lose him for the season u stupid as

  20. Bosch Says:

The bowel movement must be flushed!

  21. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Todd Bowles is functionally stupid. In that he makes bad risk/reward decisions. Going for a TD from the 5 yard line on 4th down when you’re rolling and up 7 points in the first quarter: low risk/high reward.

Kicking a field goal into the win from 55 yards out when you need more points. High risk/low reward.

Having all your remaining best players out on the field when you have no chance of winning/ high risk/low reward.

Therefore: functionally and situationally stupid head coach.

  22. David Says:

I will never ever ever ever agree with pulling players just because the game is virtually over. I played football through high school and college, can’t stand the notion.
Can’t stand people blaming the coaches for not taking someone out… It’s football. It sucks but things happen.
It’s a business. You don’t play players in preseason because it’s meaningless risk. Same concept when a game is out of reach. –Joe

  23. MadMax Says:

Look, I get it a little bit todd, but the game was too far out of reach….thats where your mental acuity runs out as a head coach. Game was over dude, t f!!!

  24. LVMYBUCS Says:

U don’t win games letting players tell u what to do as a head coach.

  25. Time2ChimeIn Says:

I have not posted before. But enough is enough. Todd Bowles must go! This was such a stupid, senseless loss. Mike shouldn’t have been in either. Didn’t learn from Antoine. Get this guy out of here!

  26. orlbucfan Says:

Is there any way a protest can be lodged by the fans to the NFL over the referees? The bad calls were blatant on Cade Otton and CG14. Godwin is out for no good reason. That’s also insult by Harbaugh. Otton is more serious. He’s endured those helmet hits two games in a row.

  27. David Says:

I am way more concerned about constantly trying to run against the number one run defense, the sloppiness on offense, and the what seemed like a dozen blown coverages on defense

  28. LakelandBuc Says:

They was only down by 10 points when Godwin was hurt. If Todd Bowles had pulled his starters, then commenters would be calling for his job, saying he quit. You can’t please Bucs fans, they gonna cry and whine regardless of what happens.

  29. Miller5252 Says:

Can’t wait to hear Lee lose it on the next podcast! The Bucs might not let him in the building after he goes nuclear on the podcast! 🤣

  30. A Bucs Fan Says:

Bowles said it’s dislocated. Hopefully that is it and there is minimal/no ligament damage. That would be ideal!

  31. DRob Says:

If I were Godwin I wouldn’t resign with a team who did this to him. Not If bowles is back.

  32. MadMax Says:

Ok, whose the next HC…..time to start looking Jason….ive had enough of this.

  33. Todd Says:

    I mean, “Bruh!”

  34. Bucfan1988 Says:

I have been a total supporter of Todd Bowles Since last year.

After the way, he treated his players tonight he needs to be fired PERIOD!!
Inept coaching, and subjecting your players to Injury in a game that was too far out of hand.

You have the most important game of the season NEXT WEEKEND Against a divisional opponent that has the same exact record as you.
Winner Takes over the division in first place..,

He is no Longer looking out for the best interest of his players and his team.

Bowles needs to be let go….

  35. Trask To The Future Says:

Bowles just has to always go for those GARBAGE TIME stats.

  36. BucsFan81 Says:

That’s the season this is what happens when you have idiots that coach. I doubt Godwin gets a new contract. 2 leg injuries in like 2 or 3 years. Dude was just getting back to his normal self after the Saints took his knee out a couple years ago. I blame Bowles no reason to have him out there when the game was clearly over. We won’t even win the division or make the playoffs. A promising season wasted.

  37. Tucker Says:

What a blow man that’s probably the season what a sad day

    ——
Point taken. He’s still a functionally and situationally stupid coach.

  39. Cobraboy Says:

I don’t like quitters no matter the score, especially behind

Losing both Evans and Godwin kill the Bucs chances of a playoff run.

    Really sad, but that’s football.

Now the young ‘uns get their chance as key players.

I, for one, want to see both Evans and Godwin back, healthy, next year.

I suspect, Evans record is history. I thought he’d make it.

  40. Herbiebuc Says:

Why are already saying they out for the season!?

  41. Simeon4HOF Says:

Todd was never going to get us back to Super Bowl. Deep down we all knew that

  42. A Bucs Fan Says:

Now I know why Chris being in the game was stupid and I am angry about it. The new kick off rules only allow TWO ONSIDE KICKS. The Bucs had already used BOTH. There was no way for them to come back. This is a SERIOUS lapse in judgement by the coaching staff.

  43. ElioT Says:

    Bowels is done.

Same guy who quit during the divisional game in Detroit.

EVEN AFTER GODWIN WENT DOWN HE’S STILL GOING FOR IT – risking more injuries to the Bucs or the Ravens.

    Total moron.

    Big dumb ****

This was like a bad dream.

  44. DRob Says:

Herbie. We are looking at a both-bone leg fracture to Godwins shin. Several month recovery.

  45. Simeon4HOF Says:

Todd should step down to DC and Godwin’s Wife the new HC effective immediately, hows that 4 ya “coach”

  46. Tbbucs3 Says:

Its so easy to play the hindsight game….freak injuries happen all the time.

I think its idiotic to point all the blame on Bowels….football is a very violent sport. Its what these guys sign up for.

    Prayers for Godwin

  47. Cobraboy Says:

Joe, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Maybe the Bucs need to throw a team toga party…

  48. MelvinJunior Says:

Gotta pad those stats for Baker now. Just pointless. I’m really really afraid that we will look back on tonight, as being FRANCHISE altering. Trade Deadline is near and ME is no longer traceable with his injury… What the hell are we going to do NOW, with Godwin’s contract!? Can’t trade him. Dean is on the IR. Vea should have some value. Need to new HC. CAN’T draft a QB this year… NO ONE is worth it. Accumulate Picks. and tank for MANNING (while trying to contact the ‘family’ and workout a plan, cause you already KNOW that (same as with Eli), they’re absolutely NOT going to ‘allow him’ to just play anywhere).

  49. Bucsgoham12 Says:

Godwin will never see the true pay day he deserves. He never complained when every wr this offseason was getting paid. He didn’t deserve this, I have never been one to hate on Bowles but this was an idiotic decision. Take the loss by kneeing or running the ball, it made no sense to continue having plays called.

  50. ElioT Says:

This is the end of the Godwin and Evans era, all due to coaching malpractice.

    What a joke.

    Get BENT Todd!

  51. Blackmagic00 Says:

Arians, Brady brought culture change. This is the stuff that can change that in a heartbeat.

  52. LakelandBuc Says:

    HomerSimpson,

    I understand your point

But l don’t understand why people are saying the game was over when Godwin was hurt. The Bucs were down by 10 points, they still had a chance. You quit playing when the game is over, or out of reach.

10 points is not out of reach

  53. Thisisouryear!! Says:

Godwins injury looks like he’s out for the season. We watched the play again and the left leg was turned flat. What about Evans? Do we know he’s out for the season?

  54. Oxycondomns Says:

bowles thought evans hamstring was going heal during the game

  55. ElioT Says:

    @tbbucs – you’re an idiot

  56. Mike Johnson Says:

Its called FOOTBALL. People get hurt. No excuses. With or without Goodwin and Evans. Out next game against the Falcons is MUST WIN. Lose that game and we might lose the division. Other teams got injuries too. Next man up. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us. Man up Bucs!

  57. Drunkinybor Says:

It’s just dumb. He screwed him over bad. He git hurt in his contract year for a coach..doing what exactly? Making the score look better. Tonoreach a win is s win and a loss is a loss then to have your best offensive player get hurt on a meaningless drive in a loss is to me is a lose your job offense. That’s unacceptable period. Imagine kebron or Curry playing in a game with 5:00 left down 35 points. It would never ever ever ever happen. What foolishness and buffoonery. He’s lost me as a fan after this. He put his plauer/family in that position and it cost his family big tine. Great job dad

  58. Trask To The Future Says:

    Lakeland Buc,

Rules only allow TWO onside kicks in a game. We already attempted two and were down 10.

  59. Bucfan1988 Says:

Just watched Todd Bowles Press conference.

Said he thinks Godwin has a dislocated ankle. Unsure if there is more damage.

He had the gall to make a comment that “his players wanted to be in there at the end.”

Bro, You’re the freaking head coach!
You decide who is going to be there and how you want this game to be finished up when you are down 10 points with a minute left And no timeouts…

You could have shut this game down and ran the ball for the last couple of plays or taking knees.

Your lack I’m looking out for your players should cost you your job. There’s no reason why this situation should’ve happened.

  60. Tbbucs3 Says:

The hindsight game is so dumb….agree LakelandBuc it was a 10 point game, you play to win the game.

    Life happens, football happens

Sorry Bowels cant predict freak injuries, nobody can.

  61. Greg Says:

In watching the Bowles press conference he is aware that barring a complete miracle his career just ended.

  62. Matt Says:

New NFL rule.. a team can only attempt 2 onside kicks per game. There was zero chance we could pull off a victory even if we scored since we couldn’t attempt another onside kick.

  63. Bucfan1988 Says:

If Godwin comes back from this injury, Jason Lightner damn well pay this guy handsomely….

Everybody now knows how hard of a worker Godwin is.

  64. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Too bad we lost our best receivers tonight in a game the defense already mailed in long ago. There will be nobody for mayfield to throw to now as there is a Huge drop off in ability and want to with 3 and 4. If Evans can make it back by game 10 He still might get his 1000. That’s it. Stick. A Fork in this bad boy. We’re cooked.

  65. Bucfan1988 Says:

    Jason Licht

  66. ElioT Says:

When you’re already down Evans for at least a few weeks, YOU DO NOT PUT YOUR #1A WR, Franchise QB, and starting TE on the field in garbage time with no possibility to win.

Complete and total lack of situational awareness.

Liam Coen isn’t getting off free here either.

    Horrible.

Turned a beat down into something so much worse.

  67. Trask To The Future Says:

Tbbucs3, there was no winning down by 10. Max two onside kicks allowed per game under the new rules, we already used them both.

  68. Tbbucs3 Says:

ElioT….whats your background in football other than typing behind a keyboard?

    Please, enlighten us

  69. Bucsgoham12 Says:

According to Baker the players talked about about getting a quick score. Onside because they did it once and almost a 2nd time than a hail mary…That is fine and dandy but that is just a very low chance especially since Ravens would have tightened up in the redzone. I get not wanting to give up, but long season easiest path to the playoffs is win division they constantly say it. This isn’t an NFC or division match up.

  70. Leopold Stotch Says:

First the Rams game. Then Detroit. Then he decides to so the exact opposite in an overall game that in all intents and purposes done. Then we lose Godwin. Wtf?

  71. ElioT Says:

    TBbucs- you’re an idiot. Seriously

  72. Gipper Says:

Pretty sure Chris Godwin wanted to be out there. Down 10 points. Quick score. Onside kick and field goal ties it. Easy to second guess. Had Bowles not played the game out he would have been labeled a quitter. Football is a violent game. Injuries are just a part of the game. Game got away in Q2. Godwin TD called back for Wirfs holding that nobody really saw. ME should have caught a perfectly thrown TD. Yes, unfortunate about injury but in NFL if you get two hands on the ball it should be caught.

  73. Bucfan1988 Says:

The situation with the new rule of only having two onside kicks being attempted in a game makes Bowles look even more stupid.

So, you’re down 10 points with a minute left and no timeouts.
You can no longer try an onside kick…..

    Did Bowles not know this?

He should never have had his starters in at this point.

    FIRE BOWLES!!!!

  74. LakelandBuc Says:

It don’t matters about the inside kick rules

You need the mentality to play until the final gun
If you get hurt, so be it, that’s part of the game

Greg Schiano had his players rushing the QB taking a knee

    That’s football, get over it

  75. Tbbucs3 Says:

Captain hindsight is here for the rescue!

Bowels, why did you have Ryan Jenson practice when he got hurt? Why this why that?

    Pathetic logic….

  76. Tbbucs3 Says:

    ElioT

Im going to take that as 0 background in football, thank you for answering my question

  77. MelvinJunior Says:

I wouldn’t have watched the replay even if they had shown it and never said a word… I never do when they say that or when I see something that doesn’t look right. I’m weak when it comes to that… I don’t need it. But, with this one, I saw his ankle lying FLAT on the ground and that was enough for ME… I already KNEW.

  78. ElioT Says:

It was an un-winable game dum-dum.

You’re down two scores with less than two minutes and you can’t attempt another onsides.

Also, dum-dum- same coach who packed it in at Detroit in the Divisional round when in theory they still had a chance.

    What’s your background stupid?

  79. Bucfan1988 Says:

LakelandBuc, and where is Greg Schiano now?
    He got FIRED!!

I was actually OK with a couple of those games when the Bucks played to the very end when you’re only down one score.

That’s not the case here. Bucks were down 10 points with one minute left, no timeouts, and could not execute any more onside kicks.

Time to take a couple of knees and focus on the divisional game next week for 1st place THAT REALLY MATTERS!!
Bowles deserves to lose his job After not Being levelheaded and focusing more on the health of his players.

  80. ElioT Says:

    Arguing with ignorance is pointless.

Know this – Bowels cost the Bucs Evans and Godwin tonight by lack of situational awareness.

TBbucs- god bless, keep your head in the clouds buddy.

  81. Tbbucs3 Says:

Who made the tackle for the Ravens??? Patrick Queen one of their premier linebackers….what if he got hurt….is everyone blaming Harbaugh then?

Even if the gane wasnt winnable, you cant sit all of your guys….what are we supposed to bench the entire team?

    Captain hindsight is here!

  82. Aaron Says:

Love our new OC and can’t wait to watch what he can do with team moving forward…but let’s be honest we give up 500yrds to every decent offense team

  83. Ben Says:

Losing Godwin sucks on so many levels. The season isnt over though. Players wont be mailing it in this early. They drafted Mcmillian for a reason, he needs to accelerate growth. Bowles is an idiot.though. find new ways to screw this team most weeks. Falcons loss was digusting and absolutely on him, gave up 27 pts to a garbage rookie last week and this week they couldnt stop anything. The defense is terrible, but his game management is also lost. Godwin in late is just another poor example of his in game decision making. It is wild how bad he is!

  84. Bucfan1988 Says:

TbBucs, The team had three other Wide receivers left if they would have pulled starters….

All they had to do was take a couple of knees and let the game end.

Plenty of players left to do that simple choice….

  85. Citrus County Says:

Joe, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Maybe the Bucs need to throw a team toga party…
    ^^^^
Well Cobraboy, you just proved yourself to be a f.o.o.l.

  86. BucsGuy Says:

Bucs already used both of their alotted onside kick attempts meaning the game was essentially over with zero time outs left. Even if we scored on that drive the Bucs could not attempt another onside kick and would have to bank on the hope that the Ravens muff the return and somehow not recover it. After the second onside kick attempt failed, there was a 0.000001 chance of the Bucs even getting the ball back to attempt to tie it.

So yea, Bowles needs to go there was zero reason for starters to be out there.

  87. MelvinJunior Says:

Let the total, complete REBUILD begin… Start accumulating draft-picks, hire a new HC this coming off-season, continue developing our young talent, & then go ‘all-in’ on MANNING for 2026.

  88. LakelandBuc Says:

I just can’t see a HC pulling his starters in a 10 point game with over a minute to play.

Why was Baker still in the game?????

    Padding his stats??!

  89. Tbbucs3 Says:

“The team had three other Wide receivers left if they would have pulled starters”

Maybe for our next coach we should hire a wizard who can predict freak injuries ahead of time so they can be avoided.

How many fans in real time where calling for Godwin to sit prior to the injury? Im guessing 0.

  90. MelvinJunior Says:

Time to be REAL… THIS Defense and BAKER with THESE wide-receivers, etc. It’s a WRAP.

  91. Bucfan1988 Says:

LakelandBuc, Bowles should have pulled all starters OR ELSE just taken a couple of knees and end of the game.

His lack of doing neither one of those is pathetic…

  92. Davenport Says:

    Career loser running this team.
    Wildly inconsistent.
    Regularly unprepared.
    Ridiculous decision-making.

    He’s gotta go.

  93. LakelandBuc Says:

Why wasn’t Kyle Trask in the game?

Matter of fact, how many games has he been in??

  94. Will24 Says:

I know it won’t happen, But Bowles should go. Incredibly stupidly coached game once again. Season seems lost now. I feel genuinely sick about Evans and Godwin too.

  95. Bucfan1988 Says:

TbBucs, you simply don’t get it…..

    The game was over!

Once again, just over a minute left in the game, down 10 points, no timeouts left, and unable to execute any more onside kicks…..

    ITS OVERRRRRRRRRRR!!
    Move on….

I didn’t understand why they just didn’t take a knee and end the game.

Myself, I’ll be honest…I was shocked that they were still trying to be aggressive with the offense.

  96. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    Citrus County Says:
“Well Cobraboy, you just proved yourself to be a f.o.o.l.”
    .
    .

Relax, CC. It was a movie reference. Not meant to be taken seriously.

  97. Usfbuc Says:

Some of you aren’t understanding that there was no way to win. Yes if we scored we would have been within one score but with no timeouts and no chance to kick another onside attempt. If fans understand this then the coaches should have too.

  98. Mike Johnson Says:

Cut it out and knock it off, please. The injury to Godwin happened because the Bucs were fighting and still trying to win. I loved Bowles response during the press conference to the question of not taking Godwin out. And I also like that Baker backed him up. Could/Woulda.Shoulda. Eveybody wants to 2nd guess now. Its like asking a surgeon why he did not do something when he was trying to save a life. You do what you think you have to do people. Its football. This is the NFl. Not golf. People get hurt.

  99. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Why he (Godwin) was on the field, Joe has no idea.’

You’re starting to sound like many of these other whiney ‘fans’ Joe. Chris was on the field because he’s a professional. He’s a warrior & was out there with HIS TEAM for the same reason that Mike played with a bum hammy and Vita played with a bum leg too.

The same reason that Wirfs was out there, and Mayfield, and every other starter on both offense & defense. It sucks, but injuries happen, at the beginning of games, in the middle of games & at the end of games.

Bucs lost tonight to a better team, but the reality is that we beat ourselves yet again. Far too many mistakes. A few could be attributed to coaching, but most of them were on the players on the field at the time.

  100. Oz lynn Says:

It will be ok. Bucs 3 and 4 receivers have been pretty good. White is a he’ll of a receiver. Running game is getting better and Mayfield thrives in the short game. And Evans will be back eventually.

  101. Bucsgoham12 Says:

The 2 onside rule is false, it was a proposal that didn’t pass. Team could have still done one, but with less than a minute it would seem unlikely with the Ravens defense. The Ravens would have gotten serious if Bucs got close to scoring.

  102. Pepsi Says:

Yes so many people citing this “max 2 onside kicks per game” thing as if they knew about it themselves during the game. Clowns… even more dumb is how it’s not even true..

Bucs had the ball, and down by 10. Was scoring possible? Yes. If they scored would the ravens have been sweating bullets on the ensuing onside kick? You bet your ass they would have been. No issues with Godwin being in there trying to get a miracle (but completely possible) win.

  103. ATLBUC Says:

If they pull Godwin you all say Bowles is a quitter!

  104. heyjude Says:

Heartbreaking loss in so many ways. But it is far from over. Baltimore seems to be a team that is good on the road. This isn’t their first away game win this season. They won at Bengals, Commanders, and Cowboys.

Chris Godwin is a team player and probably insisted on staying in the game. Mike Evans was hurt going in to the game, but he wanted to play. Mike being another team player. Baker and others were also still in there because they are committed to the team and we fans too.

Pretty sure Licht and Bowles didn’t sleep last night either and will be strategizing today on their next move before next week. Maybe some good surprises to come too.

  105. Stan says Says:

Lot of comments on Chris should not have been out there. If the bucs do some kinda of miracle comeback and Chris doesn’t get hurt. Everyone is happy that Bowles was smart enough to keep his starters in the game. Bucs fans come on, lets be praying for Chris so he can heal from this injury and have a great life without long term effects from this. Baker and Bowles are correct they are trying to Win a football game. If Chris isn’t out there they have less of a chance to maybe get the miracle they were trying to achieve.
