Kellen Winslow’s Status Looking Grim For Sunday

The Bucs should need all their weapons, if they plan on beating the Panthers at Carolina on Sunday. And it appears Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman’s favorite weapon may be less than 100 percent, if he even plays at all.
Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow’s ugly knee is acting up again. So much so that Winslow has missed practice today. Again.
And it raises a red flag, as reported by eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune on the TBO Bucs Twitter feed.
For the third consecutive day, Bucs TE Kellen Winslow did not practice. Winslow’s chronic knee problems obviously remain a concern.
This is very much a concern. If Winslow missed much of the preseason games because of his knee, and is already missing significant practice before the second game of the season, just exactly how healthy is he going to be come November?
UPDATE: Winslow, as well as Kareem Huggins, are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Roy Miller has been removed from the injury report.

Man, you mean to tell me it only took one win against the Browns for eric to stop commenting?

Winslow usually misses practice because of his fragile knee. This is nothing new. Last year he barely practiced but he was always good to go on Sunday. Hopefully his knee lasts the year.

We will be ok with or without Winslow if we can do the following: Avoid turnovers, avoid costly penalties, run the ball affectively, stop the run and pressure the QB. If we do most of those items better than the Panthers then we win.

Jbyrd: Thanks. I wasn’t aware that the team with the most points at the end of the game woulb be the winner.
Hopefully Kellen will be able to play. If he can’t, I think that the Bucs can manage.

Stevens is no Winslow, but he’s no slouch either. We’ll be ok. The Bucs knew the risks when they signed him and have no obligation to him after this season if they don’t want him – contract brilliance on Marks part.

Winslow is phenomenal at pass catching, but simply horrible at run blocking. Pick your poison. I am a fan though and do like watching him battle.

I may be a lone wolf on this one but I disagree with those saying that we’ll be OK without Winslow. We desperately need him for our offense to have any semblance of success. He’s still the #1 weapon in the passing game and its only proven (so far) commodity. If he’s not playing the entire offense WILL feel the crunch in the form of more “8 in the box” defenses and more double teams on Mike Williams.

If Kellen can’t go I say they keep Gilmore in so we have a TE that can actually run block.

Bring Pervis Back from PS he is a better all around TE then Gilmore IMO and sit Winslow. wish we would could have kept Rendrick Taylor as a PS TE he has good hands and can block. With or without Winslow i think we play well.

People, people, people! Winslow is fine! Morris is resting him to preserve his knees…like he always does. There is no need to assume to worse here.

He’s a soldier, he’ll play thru the pain! In all seriousness though this is very much a concern, he really is the only proven pass catcher we have on our roster.

Pete, this is different. Morris said that he was experiencing pain in his knee. That wasn’t the case the other times he was held out of practice.
This looks like the beginning of the end for him in Tampa. The bucs don’t wait on injuries to heal, just ask AB and Bidwell.

I like Winslow, but maybe it is time to draft a top flight tight end if there is one this spring. That could spell Winslow and break in the new kid.

We definitely need a TE that can block. This is where losing Demar Dotson really hurts. I like when the played him at TE, but someone has to make a block. Blount???

I hope Winslow can play! He can’t block, but is our constant mismatch on offense. No linebacker can cover him, no safety can handle his size and strenght. At this point, he is by far our best receiving threat. But I think he plays. Holding him out of practice is the smart move.

AB and Bidwell were different. In Antonio Bryants case, he had an attitude and had pulled himself out of games at the last moment. And he still isn’t healed up…so the Bucs made the right call on that.
In Bidwells case, he is really up there in years, and most people acknowledged that if the team was going to get younger, they might as well find a younger replacement for him.
I still think the guy we switched to the practice squad is going to be the guy..after he develops a bit more. Look for him to come on strong in camp next year.
In Winslow’s case, he isn’t the young workhorse he once was, but he is still very capable of getting close to 1,000 yards, and until our young receivers truly start getting it, we need players like him.
However…I do expect us to put a little focus on the tight end position next off season. Right now, we barely have anyone that can potentially replace him or Stevens, who is also getting long in the tooth.

Wasn’t Gilmore suppose to be this big bad blocking TE when they got him from the Bears? He caught a couple passes in the Pre Season, so what gives?
