Haason Reddick Dream Ends Quietly

So Joe has lobbied over and over and over again for the 2024 Bucs to chase a premier edger rusher as they did in 2018 with Jason Pierre-Paul.
Pierre-Paul was everything the team hoped for when it traded a third-round pick to get him from the Giants. It was a steal of a deal by Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.
Then the Bucs planted an edge-rushers-are-everything flag when they made Shaq Barrett their franchise player in 2020 and dropped giant bank on Shaq 2021.
This year? The Bucs chased disinterested and disgruntled free agent Randy Gregory in March to replace Shaq, and they insisted failed Bucs edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka was worthy of another year of hope — all while hoping YaYa Diaby would build on his strong rookie season. Plus, Licht drafted edge rusher Chris Braswell in Round 2.
That wasn’t enough for Joe because Super Bowl winners have a stud edge rusher. Simple as that.
Haason Reddick and his four consecutive seasons of double-digit sacks were an option this offseason, but he was traded to the Jets. Contract nonsense ensued and it was reported that Reddick, who refused to practice or play for New York, was back on the trade block this month.
Joe lobbied for the Bucs to at least consider Reddick. But that dream is over.
Multiple reports today say Reddick and the Jets worked things out and he will re-join the team tomorrow.
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m.
There will be a President elected on that day. Will there be a new Bucs edge rusher?

No, there will not be a new edge rusher. We are rolling with who we have, and we’ve managed a 4-2 record without a premier edge rusher so far. And there is no rule that you need to have one individual on defense to secure your trip to a SB. Would be nice to have sure, but you work with what you have.

Bringing an outside edge rusher into this defense is easy to say. But Bowles insists that his outside linebackers drop into coverage relatively often. Not all DE/OLBers are capable of doing that. And definitely, guys from other teams certainly don’t know the nuances of doing it under T.B. There is no position on this defense that just rushes the passer and racks up contract numbers.
Now, should it be open to criticism that they couldn’t find a way to use a guy like him on pass rush downs? Of course. But this is the expensive obstacle. Plus, he chooses when he wants to play. So there’s that.

I just want a dog like Simeon Rice. I don’t care if he can cover or not. If he can get to the QB and knock the ball out of the QBs hand or sack him, I don’t care about coverage. Sim and JPP could hold the edge or beat double blocks and wreak havoc. We don’t have anyone that can do what Sim and JPP did.

Sadly, I guess Reddick is not in the cards. Don’t give up yet. There has to be someone that maybe we aren’t even thinking of.
#99 mentioned Max Crosby. Hearing possibly the Lions. Could be a good fit for the Bucs too.

Just bite the bullet and get Devon White. Put him in on passing downs and let him play the Micah Parsons role and rush the passer. It’s the one thing he does well.

Yeah and defensive linemen have always shown they can cover receivers, tight ends and rbs. Bowles thinks his exotic blitzes fool opposing qbs and coaches but actually they fool him thinking he has a great system, one where the “immobile” Kurt Cousins was fooled into continuing his attacking the slaughter house middle of our defense while putting up over 500 yards against it. We’ve had some HCs nose blind to their own stubbornness to the implementation of their systems and their uselessness with the present players playing. I think it’s called pounding a square peg into a round hole!

Devin White is a bad football player and is now unemployed. He’s not coming back to Tampa.
I don’t think the Jets would have traded him to an NFC team because then their 3rd round pick owed to Philly turns into a 2nd rounder.
Crosby, and/or Azeez Ojulari for different reasons would ne an ideal fit

White had 9 sacks in 2020. He knows the defense. Because he is unemployed, he can probably be had cheap. He may not be a great player, but on passing downs, he is probably a better option than Britt.

We’re dang near leading the league in sacks. Why take snaps away from the young guys? Remember how important the type player is to the team. I’m like Joe, give me sacks. But Joe, we’re getting them. Now Pierre-Paul or Suh I’d reconsider. But I haven’t seen them available.

@Irishmist White had 9 sacks in 2020 because of the play of Suh, JPP, Shaq, & LVD. He was a young up and coming player who played four games in the 2020 playoffs to his potential. The rest of his career he under performed and disappointed with his selfishness off the field and undisciplined football, questionable effort on the field.
Other Bucs insiders have already said there is a zero percent chance he’s ever employed by the Bucs again. It’s not happening.

Que Sera, Sera. It may all be for the best anyway. It would appear that Godwin won’t be slipping away to the highest bidder (fingers crossed). And we still have all our picks for next year. This organization (in my view from under the bleachers) is so close to the stable foundation so desperately needed for so long a time. Hang in there Bucs fans the best is yet to come. At least I hope so. After 48 years of disappointments one never knows for sure.

Let’s not get wrapped around the axle here. We have 17 sacks. The Vikings have 20 and the Chiefs have 9. We are in the upper third. Granted I would love to see a JPP type player wrecking opposing quarterbacks. Hassan Reddick though?

Interestingly enough, if you just google “NFL sacks 2024” and found the top 15+ sack leaders had 1 thing in common…. With the exception of maybe 2, they all play for teams that will most likely be watching the playoffs from home. If you go back to include 2023 = same 🤔
Of course we need/want more success rushing the QB, getting sacks etc… but there seems to be no real correlation between team success and having (or not having) a “stud” individual edge rusher.

There is an argument to be made for character players on a football team. Who would be a better teammate ? Aaron Hernandez or Lawrence Taylor. Very touchy subject here….

Well Joe, even with our choir boys and Boy Scouts, we’re 4-2. Who says you have to be a thug, have a rap sheet, or be a loser gangbanger to win football games? Sure Canton has a few questionable characters in it. Big whoop. It also has a lot of good guys. I’ll take a talent with character over a talent without it any day of the week. Too many so-called “winners” in the world stinking up the joint as it is. But, hey, whatever.

This team alone proves you wrong there, Joe. We have had a LOT of character guys…on superbowl winning teams.
Lotta readers here have read between a lot of lines. Joe loves high-character guys. The Bucs have a ton of them, but it’s not a prerequisite to being an excellent football player that can help a team win a Super Bowl. It would be a prerequisite in many other fields or endeavors. That’s the only point. A strong locker room and coaches can manage a lower-character dude. And you know what? Sometimes they’re worth a chance. They can always be cut, but JTS can’t always get you a big sack in the postseason. Also, one team’s character problem is often another team’s missing piece. Just look at the Bucs’ history with Aqib Talib and others. –Joe

I love all of the coaches on here who say the Bucs don’t need dominant pass rushers. The funny thing about that is the team goes all in with the OLB’s rushing the QB and just miss so there is a receiver running wide open and then they blame the secondary. Pass rush matters!!!

We’ve got 15 sacks in our last 3 games! And Kancey just debuted and is kicking off rust. Yaya is due. Braswell is just getting used to the NFL. We just got Winfield back. We’re doing ok and will get better as the season goes.

What you say is true, however adults are not the only ones reading arrest reports and headlines. Is it not the height of hypocrisy for the NFL to espouse character and community involvement on the one hand and overlook bad behavior on the other ? Does bad character not directly reflect on ownership ? Do rich powerful team owners not represent the community ? Do we want our community to condone bad character?
Owners of many teams would tell you giving players or a coach a second chance is a sign of a team’s good character. They’d say the community being represented is filled with people of all kinds of backgrounds, which include former bad actors. They also might say giving someone conditional employment isn’t condoning bad character. Joe’s not pushing those beliefs, only pointing out the reality of the perceptions.–Joe

Don’t believe the superbowl champs have a double digit edge rusher? They do have Chris Jones tho, and just a super defense all around. Spagnola is one of the best D.C.’s in the business. The Chiefs are undefeated because of their defense, and they don’t have that edge guy Joe dreams of.

I stood opposed to the Randy Gregory signing but clearly said that if he deserved a second chance he should get it. Those are front office decisions. Us JBF readers should not make judgements about a players character when we don’t know the facts or truth. You can spin all you want Joe, but you stepped in it when you made that statement.

Well it was worth jotting down the idea.
Probably worked out better this was in the end anyhow.
There’s a reason he has played for like 7 teams thus far in his career.
Can’t deny he did get 11.0 sacks last year and that does mean something. He can definitely get to the QB. However if he’s a cancer in the locker room then he’s not gonna get the guys going.
Regardless TB Bucs have to find a sack artist opposite of YaYa and we need to find a more dedicated pass coverage ILB not named LaVonte David. Sad part is I am not seeing anyone in college who stands out. Offense I’m not worried about. The defense has potential weaknesses long term.
