Last week Bucs offensive coordinator hopped on Peter Schrager’s podcast to talk all sorts of things about the Bucs from players to dodging a hurricane.

Oh yeah, and a little bit about his league-best scoring offense through six NFL weeks.

Two weeks ago this morning, Coen said he and the rest of the Bucs’ staff got tipped off that Hurricane Milton was likely headed for the Tampa Bay area and that the team was making plans to bug out.

At the time, Coen said the Bucs were looking at three locations: Orlando, Texas and New Orleans. Two planes of players, family members and pets made it to New Orleans.

Coen said the Bucs actually stayed at three different hotels, the Hyatt, the Ritz-Carlton and the J.W. Marriott. Despite all the hassle, Coen gave credit to Bucs staffers for making the chaos seem as seamless as possible.

Still, Coen paid a price. His father-in-law flew in from Cincinnati and helped Coen’s family evacuate back to Ohio. With all the jumping around, Coen skipped a very important date.

His wife’s birthday was Oct. 8, the day before Milton hammered the Tampa Bay area. Coen missed his wife’s birthday amidst the commotion.

“I was in the doghouse for a day or two,” Coen admitted.

Coen was on Schrager’s podcast in a sense to receive props from Schrager starting out the season so well, and putting up 594 yards on the slimy Saints, a Bucs franchise record.

A lot of that was because of the outstanding play of quarterback Baker Mayfield. Coen gave viewers/listeners a little peek behind the current about Mayfield.

It seems Mayfield, per Coen, is the type of guy that brings others together. He likes being one of the guys and the rest of the team not only sees that but appreciates it.

“He’s an igniter,” Coen said of Mayfield. “He is a type of person you just want to gravitate towards.

“He’s a lineman at heart. Those are his best friends. Those are his guys. He’s just one of the guys.”

Mayfield takes his offensive linemen out for dinner on a weekly basis, Coen said, and often goes on offseason trips with them.

Coen said that even though Mayfield is a key reason why the Bucs are doing well, he just wants to be a football player. He doesn’t put himself in a higher atmosphere than teammates.

Joe thinks that may explain why Mayfield is more than willing to run downfield to throw blocks for his running backs. Hang with offensive linemen? You get to be like them, too.

As for the Bucs offense as a whole, Coen gave Schrager a warning of sorts.

“We have yet to play four quarters of our best football.”
