Baker Mayfield And Trust

October 20th, 2024

Eyeing Baker Mayfield.

The word “trust” was thrown around One Buc Palace last week. Specifically, it was trust in relation to the Bucs offense.

Bucs offensive coordintor Liam Coen said one factor in finding a competent, reliable No. 3 receiver is his trust in them. Understandable.

However, the most important factor may be Baker Mayfield’s trust in the No. 3 receiver.

On her weekday show “Up and Adams,” seen on TruTV, Kay Adams believes Mayfield trusts his receivers implicitly, and they trust him. And this has had a twofold reaction, allowing Mayfield to become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and the Bucs to be one of the best teams. Adams said this was evident when the Bucs blew out the slimy Saints in the second half last week after a horrendous second quarter by Mayfield.

Adams loves how Mayfield wasn’t a bit fazed by his three second quarterback picks and kept slinging it.

“The resilience, the regrouping, the ‘Who-gives-an-eff, I’m going to get up and do it again,'” Adams began. “He leads the Bucs to 51 points and a franchise record 594 yards.

“Listen, give some love to Baker Mayfield. I would just like to know, what got [Mayfield] through that stretch?”

Adams said after reflection, it was trust.

“I can see the confidence,” Adams said of Mayfield. “I can see the trust Baker has in these guys.

“And we’ve seen those guys repay the trust in ways that I don’t think he had at any of the other stops he’s had. And it’s bringing out this [superior] level to his game.”

Joe wants to trust the Bucs like they trust Mayfield. But the Bucs are so up-and-down. Beat Detroit one week on the road, barf to Denver at home. Wax Philadelphia at home and then gag away a win to Atlanta thanks to a Code Turtle.

Beating the Crows tomorrow night would be an awesome first step into believing and trusting the Bucs are one of the NFL’s elite.

  3. JimBobBuc Says:

Don’t open the oven door, keep Baking undisturbed, or else the desert will crater.

The Bucs need to keep at chip on their shoulders somehow. Who’s been slandering them lately?

  4. Crickett Baker Says:

That is fantastic! I hope Baker doesn’t know it yet, though.

Joe, so a win tomorrow night would be an awesome first step to believing and trusting the Bucs are one of the NFLs elite teams? I knew they were one of the NFLs best teams as I walked out of Ford Field in January. I guess I don’t know what you’ve been seeing these last 14 games. Also we’re getting better as a team than we were a year ago. Alot better. I wonder Joe what would be the awesome second and third step to believing and trusting the Bucs are an elite team? Oh wait, I know. Never losing again. Sheesh. It’s a long season.

Interesting comparison between Mayfield & Mahomes, and a quick glance would say that Baker is the ‘better’ QB and that Patrick must be ‘lucky’ to be 5-0. A deeper look though would indicate that the Chiefs are a very well-led TEAM that’s very consistent, but that they’re pretty much the opposite of our Bucs (who seem to lack consistency at this point).

Chiefs are winning largely thanks to their defense IMO which has allowed only 14 PPG average (to rank #6). Interestingly though, they only have 9 sacks, 36 QB Hits & 4 takeaways, well below what we have (17 sacks, 41 QB Hits & 9 takeaways).

The Chiefs have won the close games this year, but haven’t really blown anyone away. Mahomes has 1 4th Qtr Comeback & 2 Game Winning Drives to his credit. Despite having Mahomes though, the Chiefs run (150 times) almost as much as they pass (160 times).

  9. Beeej Says:

Chiefs have ZERO wide receivers, they sooooo miss Cheetah. Watched a game of theirs a couple weeks ago, they were running 4 tight end sets

  10. stpetebucfan Says:

Up and down and lacking in consistency. Sounds like we’re describing the Brady led 2020 SB Champion Bucs. Very up and down. That team lost TWICE to New Orleans and got into the playoffs as a Wild Card.

The current Bucs have exactly the same record as the 2020 SB Bucs at this point in the season. If their experience is any guide the Bucs still have some more “ups and downs”. It’s the Salary Cap Era NFL.

Injuries have a lot more to do with this season’s team than that year. The Bucs have been rather charmed when it comes to losing players to injury…until this year. Law of averages and payback can be a beotch.

I am thrilled with this team! They are exciting and fun to watch. They don’t labor under huge expectations like those Brady brought, not his fault but when you’re the GOAT coming to a team with SB talent that’s just the way it is.

Obviously I want the Bucs to win tomorrow night. But it’s only one game!!!
The Brady SB Bucs reeled off a 3 game win streak only to have New Orleans come to RayJay and basically win the Division by curb stomping the Bucs in front of the home crowd 38-3!!!

To steal from the great Bette Davis…”Hang on boys it’s going to be a bumpy ride”

  11. Bojim Says:

If the Bucs win Monday night I think they’ll get the respect they deserve. Even with a close game. And a few more fans will jump on.

  12. BillyBucco Says:

Apparently their 4 TE sets are working.
That defense is just more consistent than Tampa’s D at the moment.
Plus they have the benefit of a lot of calls going their way.
It’s amazing that they get everyone’s BEST week in and week out and they just know how to finish. Spags is a better D Coordinator right now and Andy Reid is a far superior Head Coach.
We really need Seattle to help us out this weekend. I don’t like the idea of playing as a wild card team at all.
Starting fast this week would go a long way.

  13. heyjude Says:

Kay Adams is right on point. “Baker has leveled up.” Like others have commented, the win or being a close game on Monday would not only be awesome, but would give the Bucs the respect they have deserved for a long time. Go Bucs!

  14. Defense Rules Says:

StPete … Injuries play a huge role in won-lost records IMO. Look at the Chiefs’ injury list & it’s literally a third of what the Bucs are experiencing. They’re pretty much at 100%, unlike us. Plus we’ve got a lot of guys dinged up pretty well, and IMO that has to impact game performance to some degree.

Still, I’m convinced that most teams ‘beat themselves’ via turnovers, penalties, failure to convert 3rd & 4th downs, poor S/Ts play, lousy play-calling, etc. Find the weak link & ride that puppy until the wheels fall off or your opponent adjusts (then find the new ‘weak link’ created as a result of their adjustments). Baltimore can be beaten (they’ve got the same record as us), but they (like the Chiefs) rarely beat themselves.

  15. 1#bucsfan Says:

Idk Joe. Containing Lamar is not an easy task. This isn’t the 02 Bucs defense that made Vick look human. Add in Henry and it could be a long night. Not trying to be negative just realistic about this offense coming to town. If the offense has a great game and defense plays sound defense tackles well and keeps everything in front of them we can pull it off.

  16. Kenton Smith Says:

hey Jude, you’re always so nice and upbeat in your posts I don’t want to be the one to tell you that it’s a cold and cruel world out there. “Like others have commented “ saying that a win or a close game…Stop it!! A win would be awesome and give us the respect we deserve. Losing an overtime game a few weeks ago got us nothing but disrespect. A loss would make us 4.- 3. I want a close game that we win but I’d rather have a beat down where the Ravens leave a blood trail out of town. Just saying.

  17. heyjude Says:

    Thank you, Kenton.

Agreed, definitely want to win a close game especially in OT. However, I don’t want a beat down against us. Thinking optimistically, how about a beat down on them. Now that would be awesome.

The loss to the Falcons is a bad memory, for sure. In the end, the refs didn’t do us any favors either. They ignored a blatant face mask. The loss to the Broncos is a bad memory too. Trying to move past those two games.

  18. SenileSenior Says:

The message is to be elite in December and January. We are building week to week.

Go Bucs! Bring down the Ravens!!

  19. orlbucfan Says:

DR, you’re right about that interesting comparison between Mayfield and Mahomes. One advantage KC has over Tampa is coaching stability. Look at all the changes the Bucs players have been through. Same with the Ravens, Harbaugh has been there for awhile. Still, Bucs are 4-2. Kudos to Licht and our players. Tampa Bay has got to watch out for the refs tomorrow night. I’m sure they know it. C’mon, Bucs!!

  20. Bakerfan Says:

Based on those head to head stats wonder if the morons would call Mahomes middling?

  21. JA Says:

The Chiefs are an amazing 5-0 when you consider Mahomes has nobody to throw to who can even be considered an average wide receiver..Ant their #1 RB? Gone for the season.
Lucky for them they have an elite defense and a smart head coach. We have neither, although our defense at times looks pretty darn good. Think about Evans and Godwin on the Chiefs. Might as well give them the Lombardi Trophy now.
Now think about the Chiefs receiving corps on the Bucs. Our nightmare is their 5-0 record. Do you believe the Chiefs would ever blow away a big lead against Atlanta, or get blown out by the lowly Broncos? I sometimes wonder how they do it, even with Reid and Mahomes.

  22. JA Says:

    And

  23. Ira's Bannana Says:

    Kay Adams is female perfection.

  24. RamblingRhino Says:

If we can continue to have success RUNNING the ball. We will become unstoppable. Play action, is not as useful if your backs are not producing yards per carry over 4.0! When our RB get to that 4.0 avg then the play action becomes a major weapon with our WR-TE’s. Not before. I am ready to see more “44 is for you!!”

Does anyone from Tampa remember channel 44?
