What Did We Learn About The Bucs After “Thursday Night Football”

October 18th, 2024

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

So last night, the bungling Broncos put a nail into the coffin of the 2024 season for the slimy Saints by blasting them in Lincoln’s Tomb 33-10.

The slimy Saints are now 2-5. Awww.

The Bucs have played both the slimy Saints and Broncos. What can we cobble together about the Bucs from watching that trash game last night?

Well, maybe the loss to the Broncos doesn’t look that ugly. Vance Joseph seems to have a pretty solid defense in Denver. The Bucs only got seven points on Denver. The slimy Saints put up 10.

Then there’s the game last week against the slimy Saints. The Bucs scored 51. It’s not looking as impressive now given that Denver just put up 33.

So what can Joe take away?

* The Bucs weren’t as bad as previously thought when they lost to Denver.

* The Bucs may not be as good as suspected from a team that racked up 51 points on a division foe.

In other words, the Bucs may not be as good as we think with their good wins, and they may not be as bad as we think with their bad losses.

    Exactly Joe.

  2. Dave Pear Says:

Chances are high that Todd has his team fired up to roll out flat as a pancake against Lamar. Liam better have another 40 burger in the works or the game is over right after halftime.

  3. geno711 Says:

We learned that Dennis Allen will be fired before the Bucs play the Saints in Tampa.

  4. Dave Pear Says:

The other things – Bo Nix is bad. Spencer’s Rattle is even worse. Nix torched the Todd, as did the Rattle [Spencer Rattler had 140 yards passing in the first half. Not ideal but not close to what you claim. — Joe] in the first half. Lamar is likely to have his way running and passing. And passing. Then running. Then passing some more, and more, and more.

Him having 400 yards passing and 100 yards rushing is highly possible, Liam has to cook a 40 burger.

  5. Davenport Says:

Ravens game will illustrate exactly who this team is — I don’t expect Bowles to have them ready

  6. OR Buc Says:

    I’ll take 4 good and 2 bad

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Last year Canales offense held them back. This year it’s Bowles and if he can keep his pass defense in check this team can make a deep run.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

Geno – let’s hope not. Allen is one of a small handful of head coaches that Todd can kind of outcoach .

  9. Dave Pear Says:

Joe – that 140 came in one quarter, so, yeah. Point is the same.

  10. Al121976 Says:

    Well said Joe

  11. adam from ny Says:

we learned that sean payton b!tch slapped dennis allen harder than dirk koetter

  12. Joe Says:

we learned that sean payton b!tch slapped dennis allen harder than dirk koetter

    LOL!

  13. BoricuaBucFan Says:

Unbelievable the disrespect for Bowles. Do you guys even watch the games? This guy has won 3 straight division crowns. Has steadily gotten better each season he has coached and has done it with mostly players he has drafted . I believe we have the most home grown talent starting and playing key rolls on this team. Does he have his weaknesses? Absolutely, every coach has them. He Like Licht , at least learns from his mistakes. Some of you guys act like you weren’t a fan of this team during the losing decade and before Dungy and Monty got here. Relax , Bowles will have a game plan and it will get excuted. Of that I have no doubt.

  14. Ryan Says:

Can Joe or someone explain why you’re calling the Superdome “Lincoln’s Tomb” ? I don’t understand the nickname

  15. Crickett Baker Says:

Ryan I am SO GLAD you asked that. I have been wondering, too.

Joe, I thought the Broncos were lousy. The Saints were just so bad that it made them look good. Their QB was terrible.

  16. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I’m in for that Lincoln’s tomb thingie. wtf?
Also the Bucs got rolled by Denver, but we had a certain corner that was playing then that didn’t play last week.
Remembering a chain is only as strong as its weakest link is a big reason why the Bucs smoked the aints, and got smoked by Denver. Mr. Dean are you listening?

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘In other words, the Bucs may not be as good as we think with their good wins, and they may not be as bad as we think with their bad losses.’

Got a hunch you can say that about any team in any season Joe. You’re never as good as you think you are after you win, and never as bad as you think you are after you lose.

By just about any measure, Bucs should be 4-2. We had quality wins against the Commanders, Eagles and Saints, but ‘lucked out’ in winning against the Lions (we were soundly outplayed in that game & SHOULD have lost). We got soundly whooped by the Broncos but ‘snatched defeat from the jaws of victory’ in losing to the Falcons (we had the game won, but fumbled it away in more ways than one). Regardless, we’re STILL 4-2 and own a share of the division lead.

You seem to be a lot more enamored with our win against the Saints than I am Joe. Bucs’ offense committed 3 turnovers (2 deep in Bucs’ territory) to allow the Saints to take the lead. Our S/Ts gave up a TD off a punt. Mistakes like that normally cost us ballgames, but the Bucs’ defense created 3 takeaways that our offense was able to capitalize on … for 3 TDs.

There’s no way to know how many points the Saints OR Bucs would’ve scored IF not for all those turnovers. IOW, that final 51-27 score is more a reflection of SIX total turnovers & a punt return for a TD than anything else. Against solid teams like the Ravens (only 5 giveaways in 6 games), 3 turnovers in 1 game will end up in a loss most all the time. And despite how Fruit Loops feels about Bowles, Todd’s not the one making those turnovers. We’ve got to clean that up to be a true contender.

  18. BucInA Says:

I was really excited about our run game and have huge hopes especially for Bucky. I guess we will have to see more out of Bucky and Tucker before we Dennis Green (crown) them. I saw Denver having their way with NO while running the ball. Hopefully Rashaad White doesn’t get in the way of us seeing more of them now that he is “healthy”.

  19. Permanently Moderated Says:

It’s not easy to score 51 points on any NFL team. If the Bucs ever find consistency, look out.

  20. SchlomieSingsWithChutzpah Says:

Rattler is playing better than he ever did in college.

  21. heyjude Says:

Last night’s game really does tell us a lot. Feeling pretty good about everything right now.

In retrospect, the Saints had very many injuries going into this game. They did have a lot going against them. Payton planned on that. Nix is a rookie and had a couple of interceptions, and they did have a slow start, field goals helped them. They were not perfect either.

We have a strong QB and team. We are learning more as teams play each other and our coaches and players are watching the same games too. Each team is showing us their weaknesses that are a pattern. Going forward, the Bucs must get the early edge and keep it through the 3rd and 4th quarters. No slowing down until it’s over for the win. Go Bucs!

  22. Zoocomics Says:

    @anyone who wants Bowles fired.

Who do you want instead? Let me guess, anyone would be better Bowles? I remember after the Falcons loss that someone had posted on FB that they don’t think Bowles is a championship coach…smh… really? And who is? There are 31 other teams in the league, and maybe a handful of coaches you’d claim are championship coaches. Right now, Andy Reid is your championship coach, everyone else are either “has bends” or “never was”.

I tell you, the criticism that Bowles gets from this fan base, especially after “the lost decade” post-John Gruden, it’s hard not to believe racism is not involved with how some of you feel. Perhaps your standards are too damn high. I mean in almost 20 years since we won our last Super Bowl, we finally win another one with a ridiculous healthy roster full of HoFers, consisting of the greatest QB in history and all of sudden you guys think we’re the Patriots!?…smh… If Bowles was white, with the success we’ve had the last few years, would we still be calling for his head after winning football games? If it were Arians, with the same results, no one would be saying spit about this team, would they? Frankly, Arians would not be doing as well as Bowles with his style of offense behind THIS offensive line. We saw Arians’ offense in 2022 in Brady’s last season, behind a rebuilt line and the results weren’t good. Skule would’ve looked worse trying to hold his side up longer waiting for Arians long developing routes. Our line is just about as good now as it was then, and the difference, Baker can escape the pocket, and this offense is less vertical.

Those wanting guys like Belichick, something tells me if he decides to coach again, don’t bank on the success he had in New England for 2 decades. Not sure the Belichick way is going to go over well with a rebuild, especially not having the GOAT at QB to be the example of how to be a winner.

  23. BucU Says:

“”” Relax , Bowles will have a game plan and it will get executed. Of that I have no doubt.”””

Where were these boastful comments after the Denver debacle and the ATL collapse?

  24. Buclover1988 Says:

the bucs have the worst fan base ever. a lot of you always have something negative to say regardless of how the bucs do. just ridiculous.

  25. Mr. Editor Says:

The injuries are mounting for the Aints, too, and the team will probably shut it down by the time that they visit Tampa. Bowles provided the NFL with the blueprint in stopping Rattler (by the way, great QB name but not even a serviceable QB), and the Broncos seemed to copy that approach. Tough times for the Aints are coming, and I can’t say that I’m sad to see it.

The blueprint for stopping any rookie qb is pressure – especially hits and sacks. It took Bowles a half to figure this out. As soon as he started dialing up blitzes, Rattler was ‘rattled’.

  27. Dubcity Says:

    Broncos are 4-3….

The Bowles hate is so unfounded it makes no sense. You’d think he doesn’t have a ring with the Bucs.

Bucs are a top 10 team in the league. In a year the world picked them to regress.

Ravens are the 2nd best team in the league.

If Bucs are competitive against Ravens on MNF, win or lose, I still expect the fire Bowles crowd to be in full force… but yall should at least have the decency to stfu unless the Bucs miss the playoffs this year

  28. dbbuc711 Says:

Dennis Allen will be fired soon

  29. NJBucs Says:

We learned it was probably more about the Saints run defense than the Bucs run offense.

  30. Bosch Says:

Bucs have been Jeckel and Hyde through the first 6 games. Injuries had an impact, but so has lack of prep, pass rush, offensive line , andhorrendous pass defense. They even went all Hyde in the second quarter of the Saints game. The key to the remainder of the season is to minimize the Hyde. Getting healthier will help, but it is going to take more than just that.

  31. BuxfaninTX Says:

Yes but Tampa beat the Lions in Detroit…..

  32. Sacker58 Says:

Haters of coach Bowles are going to hate.
Those type of folks can’t be satisfied because they are mostly living vicariously through the Bucs .
Usually know very little about football and how much commitment it takes to be a coach, head or otherwise!
Just Stfu and enjoy the game!

  33. Cybetsecurity_intern Says:

Its not as easy Joe and you know it. The Saints tonight were not the same team that played us.

  34. orlbucfan Says:

Okay, these tech gremlins are getting old. There’s nothing controversial in my comment.

  35. robclwtr Says:

3 People wanted to know about “Lincoln’s Tomb” meaning. Joe, I’m the 4th, at least. Let us know

  36. First Name Greatest Says:

No one personally “Hates” Todd Blows, fans don’t like how he mismanages the clock, how he’s slow to change his coverages, how he’s ultra slow in changing players in and out of the lineup and maybe just maybe his weird obsession with not calling timeouts in critical situations.

These are real issues that will cost the team games, he is a decent defensive coordinator but his nickname of Todd Blows will stand until he can scheme up a defensive to defend the forward pass

  37. Prossess Says:

Have you taken into account that we tore them down in our match up? Their coach had them playing for TD until the game ended even tho it was a certain blowout. Their game on Thursday was basically all 2nd and 3rd string players. I’m pretty sure we faced a much different saints than the broncos did..

  38. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Total lack of ability to change direction in the middle of the game if original game plan isn’t working. We have seen that over and over again.
His repeatedly uses players that have shown to be ineffective over and over again (JTS perhaps).
That is why I vorted Little Confidence.

  39. Coburn Says:

Maybe their defense isn’t that great, but there is a big difference between 33 and 51. With the amount of time given its hard to get 50+ on any team

  40. BakerBucs says Says:

I say the problem with saints game 2nd quarter was just dumb luck the 1st3rd&4th quarters r the facts facts always win over fiction,Bowles does a good job it depends on execution by the players let the guy do his job there is 6 post people on this site that r the same 6 with continuous negativity ignore there bs it’s worthless

  41. Cobraboy Says:

As I always opine: Nothing is as good or as bad as it seems.

We shall see what this team is made of Monday Night, one way or another, a factor or imposter.

  42. shaftmaster Says:

Who cares what we learned, the Bucs are still relevant in the post-Brady era and that’s all that matters. I don’t care how we win, just tired of losing games we should’ve won. If anything, we learned that we’re a resilient team that can bounce back after a tough loss.

  43. Cobraboy Says:

    @shaft:

Problem is so far this team is a clown car after a big win.

  44. a-bomb Says:

I am confused by alot of the posters on here. We know what Bowles does. He generally plays a “generic” defense in the early parts of the season-all that ridiculous soft zone stuff so that he saves his biggest “tricks” and schemes for late/season playoff use. Although, he kind of went away from that in the second half vs. the Saints. Not saying I agree with the strategy, but that is clearly the strategy that he has employed since he has been in charge of the defense in TB. He has demonstrated that he can game plan for opponents (see KC, GB and Phi playoff games). But he simply seems to not want to give his future playoff opponents the game film. Again, not saying it is a good strategy, just pointing out that it appears to be “the” strategy.

  45. Esteban85 Says:

    Astute assessment Joey

  46. D-Rok Says:

Sean Peyton deserves a lot of credit, and the Broncos may not contend for anything this season, but they will be a force next season. Our loss to the Broncos, the lowly Broncos, now doesn’t seem *as bad* because the Broncos are way better than anyone expected. Disclaimer: I mostly despise Peyton, but he is a good coach. Nobody saw the Broncos coming this year – nobody.
