“Tampa’s Dangerous Because Their Scheme Is Kind Of Wide Open”
October 15th, 2024There’s one big reason why national hype has been flowing the Bucs’ direction since Sunday’s hammering of the Saints 51-24.
Simply put, you want the attention of ESPN producers and bosses of other networks? Post numbers that pull the eyeballs of millions of fantasy football players. And the Bucs did just that on Sunday.
As fantasy players know, a team posting a shade under 600 yards like the Bucs did, plus seven offensive touchdowns, is generating a ton of points. Throw in new names contributing and that has lots of fans interested in the Bucs.
It didn’t get past Joe that BSPN and others got off the Falcons bandwagon on their postgame shows Sunday. BSPN Analyst and ex-Bucs quarterback Dan Orlovsky was ranting about how new Bucs playcaller Liam Coen is doing a stunning job keeping the Bucs unpredictable and using loads of weapons.
Without being negative, Orlovsky said the Bucs offense doesn’t have an identity now because of all the diversity, though they still run through Mike Evans as their primary option.
“Tampa’s dangerous because their scheme is kind of wide open,” he said, as former offensive lineman Damien Woody agreed.
“I don’t know if I have a pulse of exactly who they are on offense — in a good way,” Orlovsky continued.
Retired defensive back Ryan Clark also talked about the variety in the Bucs offense and how it’s finding new contributors while still having Trey Palmer and Rachaad White on the bench.

Jason & Todd need to be looking for the next OC. I see Liam as a HC next year
October 15th, 2024 at 1:28 pm
I wonder if McMillan is gonna start to improve…
October 15th, 2024 at 1:29 pm
The Saints game was the only game the play calling was consistent and unpredictable. These so- called analysts are not following the Bucs
October 15th, 2024 at 1:34 pm
The Atlanta game will be their most important game. Regardless of the outcome with the Ravens. They can’t afford to let Atlanta get to 4-0 in the division. They’re at 3-0 in the division right now. I don’t see the Saints, Panthers beating them. If they go 6-0 in the division, the division is there’s to lose!!
October 15th, 2024 at 1:50 pm
Aints held ATL without an offensive TD
They could definitely beat ATL
Love the way the offense has looked recently but you can’t get excited about this team while Todd Blows is in charge as no lead is safe with his cover no one scheme
October 15th, 2024 at 2:03 pm
Just pay Liam more money and that should keep with the Bucs. Also, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Just look at the weapons he has to work with.
October 15th, 2024 at 2:11 pm
We have to lockdown Liam please
October 15th, 2024 at 2:12 pm
Keep Rachaad White on the bench!
October 15th, 2024 at 2:12 pm
I’m still not that happy with our pass blocking, but can someone remind me who was playing center for that near historic rushing attack in New Orleans?
October 15th, 2024 at 2:16 pm
I honestly thought Coen would have early success. We’ll see if he can keep from getting figured out. I love the formations. I love the diversity. Seems like Baker is starting to utilize his freedom to change plays at the line. We’ve got all the play makers an OC could ask for. As long as the OL keeps improving we should be tough to stop.
October 15th, 2024 at 2:18 pm
Jmarkbuc really? He has been injured and miss a couple games and you think he going to play great. He will be fine. I just can not believe you are bringing him up when our offense has been great with out him. Man how people on here bring up the most irrelevant crap after big win.
October 15th, 2024 at 2:26 pm
Everyone keep saying bench Rachaad White, but Robert Hainsey outperformed Graham Barton by a country mile at OC. Maybe they should re- evaluate the OC position.
Remember when they tried Ali Marpet at OC, and he stunk the field
Maybe Graham Barton is a better OG than OC
Cody Mauch is flat out balling
Ben Bredeson need to be benched
Tristan Whirfs is playing lights out at OT
I like Luke at RT, even though his replacement wasn’t bad
October 15th, 2024 at 2:30 pm
It helps two guys who hinder the offense somewhat were not playing and our rbs and Baker running ruffshod on the Stanks helped. Hopefully Liam has a ” particular set of skills” as an OC to recognize that fact and keep feeding Tucker and Irving. Them two showed us vision and cutting ability we haven’t seen in these here parts in like for ever
October 15th, 2024 at 2:36 pm
did you see aaron rodgers last night? he looked slow his throws were late and under thrown. baker has been throwing missles, he’s been more consistent, hoping the bucs can make a super bowl run
October 15th, 2024 at 2:37 pm
If the Browns are dealing (Cooper), let’s get Garrett,,, then we are a real SB contender ,, screw Reddick
October 15th, 2024 at 2:44 pm
Why do we not use White as a WR and let him run jet sweeps, and catch passes. We do need white and his skill set. He had 990+ yards running last season. And how many receiving yards? We are getting stronger and better play out of our Oline, I for one want to see more of all our RB’s continue to get their opportunities. There is nothing more fun than watching run after run after run wear down the taints Dline.
Irving and Tucker had great games. Ready to see them get their next game of plays.
October 15th, 2024 at 2:52 pm
Pull out the checkbook and do whatever is needed to keep Liam in town! Pay the man!!!
October 15th, 2024 at 2:59 pm
We shouldn’t be assuming our run game will continue to crush like this last game BUT it is comforting to know we can win in multiple ways – if our newly found success running hits a few speed bumps Baker is capable of slinging it all over the yard.
Coen is doing an awesome job keeping defenses off balance and guessing. If he can continue to scheme things this well all season, keep opposing coach’s from figuring out key tendencies, we could/should exceed everybody’s expectations 👍🏼
October 15th, 2024 at 3:17 pm
yeah the team could be very dangerous…
– if ME13 can get healthy and start balling
– if mcmillan would stop looking like a PS player
– if palmer could screw his head on straight
– if bredeson can start fantasizing he’s ali marpet
– if shepard can tone it down a notch
– if yaya could finally get one
– if britt could drink adderall coffee before every game
– and if dean wasn’t a china doll in a bull shop
otherwise……………we good………..we are contenders……
and lastly with colder weather approaching…if we can start rocking those wicked all pewter unis
October 15th, 2024 at 3:17 pm
Can’t have Bowles going after his 4th OC in 4 years after this one. Doesn’t bode well for consistent success. If Liam finishes the year strong, I am confident the Bucs will do what it takes to retain him. Bowles may look 45 but he’s much closer to 65 and has said he won’t be around forever in this job.
As far as the RBs go… Irving needs to be #1 and get the majority of touches. After that, White is 3rd down back and Tucker is there for relief of either. I can’t get too worked up about Tucker sending White to the bench yet. The main reason is… no one was looking for Tucker out there. Saints hardly knew him. New guys have a tendency to flash early, look at Ray Davis last night. Happens all the time. As soon as there is game tape and a team plans for you… that production is coming back to Earth.
If Bucky wasn’t on the team, I would say Tucker is RB1 cause clearly he can run between the tackles and hit the open hole as a runner better than White. But Bucky is here, and White is a skilled 3rd down back.
October 15th, 2024 at 3:19 pm
and lastly…………
if jake can start acting like ray guy again
October 15th, 2024 at 3:23 pm
Wooden man
You know the cliche.. enjoy the win for 24 hours and move on..
McMillan has disappeared except for his disappointing return skills, so mine is a fair question.. I didn’t call him a bust. Not seeing much..so far.
October 15th, 2024 at 3:26 pm
White would never had made the type of runs they made, running into tackles or the back of blockers nothing close to what Irving did.
October 15th, 2024 at 3:32 pm
Bucs gotta bring it against the Ravens. Their QB will run and pass you silly.
October 15th, 2024 at 3:32 pm
Kenny McBell needs to stay on the bench, watch and learn. And no more punt returns for him, he looks like Darden doing it.
October 15th, 2024 at 3:51 pm
More Pony Package please!
October 15th, 2024 at 3:59 pm
Adam from ny – usually like your posts, but that’s a lot of IF’s….Although I agree on Evans. He needs to not freaking play if he’s basically running 3/4 speed and being useless.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:09 pm
Beat the Ravens and they’ll really be talking about us. We beat an aging team starting a rookie QB. Let’s not get carried away just yet. Monday night will be the real test.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:11 pm
Off topic but have not heard one peep about Dean’s injury
October 15th, 2024 at 4:13 pm
The team needs Trey Palmer in the lineup so defenses don’t start compressing down on the offense. Without Palmer, the Bucs have mediocre speed at the wide out positions, something I don’t think many defense have taken into account yet. If they haven’t, they soon will.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:17 pm
The thing I love about watching Mayfield is his pocket presence is elite….excellent footwork and always schemes to know how to evade defenders.
Baker just has a natural football instinct that you cant coach up.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:20 pm
The scheme has been fantastic – it actually adjusts to the talent on the field instead of just running a system regardless of the players on the field. The biggest thing, by far, was the adjustments by Coppertop to Sucke being on the field. That garbage player was killing the offense for 2 weeks, but they changed the offense to get rid of the ball quickly, and made Sucke, mostly, a non-issue. Very impressive.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:22 pm
Let’s not start sucking each other’s d!ck$ just yet. The more hype we get the worse we seem to play. As Public Enemy said, “Don’t believe the hype!”.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:31 pm
I basically agree with SaskBucs. People are a little premature with Coens departure. He’s not desperate Canales taking the first HC opening. Who wants to live in Cleveland? Who wants to live in NYC and work for a “Nepo baby” like meglamaniac Woody Johnson with another MAJOR ego like Aaron Rodgers actually calling the shots. Don’t know if the Todds will put a halt to the “BA line” of coaches. They tell Coen he’s next in line and that Bowles will retire immediately if the Bucs win a SB in the next 3 years or else. OH noes what would poor Dave P ear have to post about?
October 15th, 2024 at 4:48 pm
The one thing I’m most proud of on this site is how we finally came together as a fan base. And I know I caused a lot of ruckus on here but it was always for the good of the team right or wrong . And I know I wasn’t all in on Baker Mayfield but he did change my mind over the summer. But at the same time I just realized that we are all bucs fans and we all want what’s best for the team. I love the unity on this site!! Go bucs!!
October 15th, 2024 at 4:49 pm
I think Liam is a darned good OC. He coached one year in the NFL before getting here and I think won 5 games. Baker was there for 5 games. Went 97 yards in a minute with no timeouts for a TD to win one of those. Won their last game that season hanging 55 points on the Broncos. His NFL highlights were with Baker. Then he went back to Kentucky for a year. I think he knows his philosophy matches Bakers skill set. He won’t be here forever. But he and Baker are a package here for the foreseeable future.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:50 pm
The Bucs can’t keep Liam if he gets a HC offer. You can hold back your coordinators from taking promotions. It’s a bad look and if he loses Baker, he doesn’t get another offer.
Let’s win the Super Bowl and enjoy it. But also understand we’ll be OC shopping again next March.
Go Bucs
October 15th, 2024 at 4:52 pm
drdneast: agreed 100%. And when White plays our speed in general is pedestrian at best at the skill position. Being nitpicky because this offense is arguably more dynamic and creative than Bruce Arians offense, but Palmer coming back along with hopefully far more playing time for Sean Tucker and Bucky brings a bit more juice.
October 15th, 2024 at 4:52 pm
Todd Monken and Liam Coen will battle it out Monday night. I believe Todd Monken will be a hotter HC prospect than Coen, because of his NFL track record and experience, and his success at UGA .
October 15th, 2024 at 4:56 pm
And Rod Munch is dead on. Liam and Baker make adjustments according to their healthy players, not just stubbornly locking down on their playbook.
October 15th, 2024 at 5:11 pm
Liam may have more to prove. Monken was offered our OC position and turned it down, as that is what I heard at the time. Coen needs to beat him!
October 15th, 2024 at 5:54 pm
Cricket Baker,
Todd Monken turned us down because he was our OC when they fired Dirk Koetter. And they hired Bruce Arians, then he hired Byron Leftwich. Then Kirby Smart later hired Monken to be UGA OC.

Geese Oneilbuc that is awful big of you making that admission and apology. I am one that you went after a few times and I bounced it back at you also. I apologize also.
Concerning Baker, he is not perfect, tries to fit it in tight windows but that is the confidence one has to have as an NFL QB. When this O- line is able to get healthy and on the field together I think the bombs away baby will start happening and big numbers will explode.
Again… you got my respect from original post.
October 15th, 2024 at 6:06 pm
It’s really impressive that Bowles has such a good eye for OC’s. I guess that comes with the territory, being a defensive guy, you know what schemes and what systems you don’t want to play against – so hire those guys.
Canales did a very good job last year, but was still new and I think took too much advice from Todd on ‘establishing the run’ – but at least he wasn’t as incredibly predictable as Leftwich, and the offense was creative.
Coppertop seems much more comfortable with taking what the defense is giving him and taking advantage of his talent – a rare trait with coaches that just want to run their scheme. Also Coen seems to adjust in game, so if Baker is getting rattled and erratic, he makes the passes easier. That is what a good coach should do. Baker, then, when he settles down, can take more deep shots, etc. It’s a real credit to him – and to Bowles for picking him.
October 15th, 2024 at 6:28 pm
I’m admittedly not convinced that we all watched the same game. Everything I’m reading is all about our offense, and how it won the game (seemingly single-handedly) by laying 51 points on the Saints.
What I saw was the Bucs go up 17-0 in the 1st qtr (thanks to good old-fashioned COMPLEMENTARY FOOTBALL), then fall behind 27-24 at the half (3 INTs by the Bucs’ offense helped the Saints a tad), Bucs pull ahead 31-27 by the end of the 3rd qtr, then we laid them out by scoring 3 TDs in the 4th qtr to win 51-27, with 2 of those 3 TDs coming off INTs by our defense that resulted in very short fields for our offense . Up until that 4th qtr, it was very much a touch-and-go ball game.
Bucs scored 3 TDs off of Saints’ giveaways (1 a fumble return by our defense, and the other 2 TDs on short fields off of the 2 INTs). That game was COMPLEMENTARY FOOTBALL at its’ finest. The Saints were very much still in the game UNTIL those 2 INTs in the 4th qtr. That broke their backs.
Our defense got tagged with surrendering 27 points, but in reality S/Ts gave up 7 points on the punt return, and our offense gave the Saints 2 short fields in that 2nd qtr (Tampa 28 and the Tampa 10 yard lines) that resulted in our defense giving up 10 more points. Personally I’m proud of our Bucs’ defense for shutting out the Saints in the 2nd half and giving us a chance to come back & win it. COMPLEMENTARY FOOTBALL at its finest.
October 15th, 2024 at 6:58 pm
Any other ifs Adam?
October 15th, 2024 at 7:15 pm
You are absolutely right DefRules, Bowles made the right adjustments at half and the defense played hardball with the Saints
If not for the short-yardage possessions the offense gave to the Saints in the 2nd QTR, the defense might very well have pitched a shutout.
No doubt, complimentary football is winning football!
October 15th, 2024 at 7:50 pm
Offense is key. Note how no one is talking about the dangerous, challenging Bucs defense. Except for one local bloviator
October 15th, 2024 at 7:53 pm
And yet only a couple of you have mentioned the job our big turd of of a center Robert Hainsey did. I say let him stay at center and move Barton to guard.
October 15th, 2024 at 8:00 pm
Right on, Oneilbuc.
October 15th, 2024 at 8:00 pm
They put up 51 and all those yards without White, a good receiving threat, without Evans really doing much, with Trey Palmer hurt, and the rookie McMillan barely doing anything.
They have an abundance of weapons. It’s all about the offensive line. Run block and keep Baker upright and they are going to be explosive all year !!!
Loving Liam!!
October 15th, 2024 at 8:04 pm
Meanwhile the resident lecturing bag of wind can’t help but continuing the narrative about the porous pass defense. Any time the Bucs don’t score at least 30, we’re lucky to win, and even then….see Kirk Cousins and 500+ passing yards.

Applauds! Nice post O’Neill.

Buctoothbuc … You’re absolutely right about Hainsey. I focused on him some during the game, and he more than held his own. I’ve thought that Barton might do better at Guard also, but Bucs seem bent on proving that he’s a Center.
Interestingly, the Bucs running game was barely visible in the 1st half, but it really blossomed in the 2nd half (particularly the 4th qtr). Looks like we only ran the ball 7 times in the 1st half for 55 yards, but 28 times in the 2nd half for 222 yards (172 of those in the 4th qtr).
Bucs had TEN runs of 10 yards or more in the game (3 in the 1st qtr, none in the 2nd qtr, 1 in the 3rd qtr and 6 in the 4th qtr). Of those, 4 runs were around Left End, 3 over Left Tackle, 1 over Left Guard, 1 over Right Guard and 1 over Right Tackle. MAYBE they’ve finally figured out that Wirfs can actually run block as well as he pass blocks.
Baker was red hot in the 1st qtr (9-of-11), bad in the 2nd qtr (10-of-19 with 3 INTs), and OK in the 3rd qtr (3-of-4) and 4th qtr (2-of-2). He was 0-for-2 on deep passes, plus drew DPIs on 2 others that were Incomplete (didn’t count).
October 15th, 2024 at 9:15 pm
Defense Rules – complementary football wins championships. You’re right. And you and I have both mentioned here that Bowles defense first mantra is stop the run. And his Bucs defenses have been quite successful at that. That should bode well for us Monday. Dave Pear won’t agree but I am fine letting Lamar beat us with his arm. Offense wise I just hope we remember that our passing game sets up our run game. Thanks for compiling the stats and numbers that helps us to be a more informed fan site.

Geez!

Glad someone can take 4900 words to explain that complementary football is good. No one would have known that. WOW.
October 16th, 2024 at 1:52 am
BTW DR nailed it!
Been thinking the same way since before camp started. Many here thought I was nuts! LOL
Hainsey has bulked up and looked solid. He looked to be moving well out in front of some big plays Sunday. It would not bother me at all to try Barton at LG when he is ready to return.
Go Bucs!

Dave Pear thinks DR is a “bloviator”? Look who’s bloviating. You better check a dictionary. I’m one staunch, loyal fan who has backed the Bucs all the way, even when they STUNK up the planet. I’m glad to see more positive vibes on here. As a fashion note, I like the white unis. Also the red shirt/pewter pants garb. I don’t think Coen is going anywhere. Sheesh, he hasn’t finished a full season as an OC here yet. Bucs have got to bring their A++ game Monday nite. Refs will be watching them like stink on ####. C’mon Bucs, if you can beat the Lions, you can beat the Ravens. BTW, put a spy on their QB!
October 16th, 2024 at 7:21 pm
I hope we don’t lose Cohen because Baker is playing great with him . Defense is going to have to play good Monday . Even if we lose it’s ok to me as long as we don’t get blown out. Remember guys we still kinda in rebuild mode so as long as they’re competing I’m all good with the out come!!
