Baker Mayfield Leads The NFL In Touchdowns

October 14th, 2024

League-leader.

As the legendary baseball announcer Mel Allen would say, “How about that?”

When the Bucs signed discarded quarterback Baker Mayfield to a prove-it contract in the winter of 2023, some thought he shouldn’t have started. (As Joe said then and reiterates now, given how much Bucs coach Todd Bowles wanted Mayfield, the only way Kyle Trask would have started was if he played so well that the Bucs couldn’t take him off the field. And that didn’t happen.)

Well, six games into his second season as the Bucs starting quarterback, Mayfield now leads the NFL in touchdown passes (15) and total touchdowns scored (17).

What are the chances you think Mike Greenberg mentions this on his whining ESPN show “Stay in Bed,” where he slurps the rotten Jets almost daily.

Go ahead and watch as many of the hollering shows on FS1 today, and if you can stomach it, “First Take” or worse, that abortion of a show “Around the Horn.” Joe bets you don’t hear about Mayfield leading the NFL in touchdowns more than twice. Probably won’t hear it that much.

It goes against too many preset talking points. You know, like Jerry Jones or Aaron Rodgers.

  1. Dave Pear Says:

Thank Baker and Liam. Bucs would be lucky to be 1-5 if this was last year’s Bowels/Canalwater offense, because as predicted, points allowed are now correlating to yards allowed. In reality, Todd’s defense stinks.

Offense rules. It must, to win.

  2. unbelievable Says:

Oh don’t worry BSPN still hating on us.

Tim Hassleback says Saints are still best team when they get healthy, and agrees with SVP that Atlanta can be dangerous.

  3. unbelievable Says:

I should say “dismissing us”, not “hating”.

It really is crazy how badly they don’t want to talk about Mayfield and the Bucs. And look I get it to a certain degree as we are pretty hot and cold at times. But any other team puts up 50+ with the QB sho leading in TDs through 6 weeks, and you can bet it would be a segment in every single show all day long.

  4. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Bake is a true Franchise QB. Only the 2nd one we’ve ever really had here, other than Brady.

    Maybe Doug Williams too.

  5. Saskbucs Says:

How many power rankings still have the Cowboys and/or Commanders ahead of the Bucs tomorrow? Probably a lot.

A win Monday night changes the narrative.

  6. firethecannons Says:

Wow–Baker is really working out for this team, they like him, we like him, he likes it.

  7. Bucs And Them Says:

Thrilled with the big win. The O-line and Tucker & Bucky served the Aints a nice Tucky 2-piece dinner. Chew on that Nawlins! And our receivers are excellent contributors to our run blocking. They deserve a ton of credit. Coen is doing an admirable job with Mayfield and our offense. The second quarter mental lapses of dumb penalties has to get cleaned up. Defense looked much better overall with Winfield and Kancy back in the fold. But, speaking of the 2nd quarter debacle, teams like the Ravens, Chiefs, 49ers, and Lions don’t self destruct with crap like that and, meltdowns like we had in Atlanta last week. Our special teams are an embarrassment with the exception of McLaughlin. Those teams would have capitalized and made us pay dearly if any of them were our opponent today. Our discipline and focus is why we’re not quite their caliber yet. That is 100% on our coaches and captains. We’ve got the talent to beat any of them when healthy. The Bucs better address that immediately and emphatically. Bowles, you’re the Head Coach. Get it together if you want to get to the Super Bowl. The situational football lapses and time clock management are on you Coach Bowles. That’s the difference between the Bucs and them.

  8. Greg Says:

Anyone have any idea what happened with Evans in the second qtr? He definitely seemed out of sorts.

  9. Let em Bake Says:

$300 on Bake at 30 to 1 for MVP. Wouldn’t that be something ? $200 on Darnold for CPOY at 20 to1 ( but I read they changed the criteria to lean more towards overcoming injury…:( Outshining Lamar next week would be huge. Let’s go!

  10. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bucs are 4-2 and Dave Pear is whining about last year. Still.

  11. lambchop Says:

    @Greg,

During the broadcast, they mentioned a hammy. I’m glad they kept him on the sidelines and only used him in spot duty. Need him for the long haul. But, this doesn’t look good for his 1,000 yard season streak. But, I’m sure he’ll prefer winning.

  12. Dom Says:

    @Dave Pear

The defense is catching too much flack for this game. Saints scored 27 points. 7 were from a punt return. 10 came from the offense putting the defense in a bad position. A FG were the Saints had the ball at our own 28 yardline and a TD from our own 10 yardline. That leaves you 10 points they gave up on their own while also scoring 7 points with the defensive TD. Along with 3 turnovers forced, 5 sacks, and a 2nd half shutout. That’s a good job by the defense.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Dom … Excellent analysis but no sense pointing it at Fruit Loops. Not an analytical bone in his body. His obvious disdain of Todd Bowles is so extreme that it’s left him blind.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

lambchop … ‘During the broadcast, they mentioned a hammy. Need him for the long haul. But, this doesn’t look good for his 1,000 yard season streak.’

I think ME13 has been cautiously dealing with that for much of the season Lambchop. We’re only 6 games in though, and Mike tends to be ‘streaky’ anyways. For instance, last year he got 1255 yards receiving and 476 of those yards (38%) came in only 3 games (Bears – 171 yds; Titans – 143 yds; Panthers – 162 yds). That’s an average of 159 YPG in those 3 games. In the remaining 14 games, Mike got 779 yards … 56 YPG.

So far this year, he’s yet to crack 100 YPG. His 310 yds receiving in 6 games is only 52 YPG (that’s still almost 900 yards on the season over 17 games). One or 2 big games and he’ll be back up there.

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

Let ‘em Bake. You should have placed your bets 6 weeks ago.

  16. Chef Baker Says:

Check yo sheets! Baker is ballin!

  17. DCone Says:

Not since 2019 with Jameis Winston have the Bucs scored 50+ points and as it goes Mayfield played just like J.W. even worse.
In the Bucs 55-40 win over the Rams Winston was 28-41 for 385 4 TD 1 INT. Godwin had 172 yards receiving. Go on an eat the Dub Lil B you did good. Next week it’s back down the hill on that roller coaster career you got going.

Even at 51 the Bucs victory was down the scale on QB performances and impressive victories.

Lions ‘taking their foot off the gas’ early in the 4th up 3 scores and pulling Goff when he could have easily thrown over 400 and padded his stats.

Falcons defender could have had a pick six and goes down at the 5 up 3 scores to allow the offense to take Victory Formation. Smart, Selfless, and Classy.

Throwing the ball up 3 scores was about as classy as Winston punching the ball in on the last play of the game against the Falcons in 2023. At least that was the work of one low life and the coaching staff was not part of it.

Welcome to the Slimy Saints Club where players go helmet to helmet on a receiver going down, scoop and score, and act like they made the play of the century. Stop whining about the facemask cause the Refs really blew that one.

As it stands there are 8 teams with 2 or fewer losses in the NFC and only 7 spots and Bucs are still sitting in 2nd Place in their Division.

Enjoy the Fruits of your Labor because the next 4 weeks there could be some what went around start coming around.

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

A Baker gulper busting on another Baker gulper?? ? What’s happening in Baker nation??? Not like he was busting on Baker, and he’s not wrong about Bowles. He takes too long to make good defensive decisions and to make adjustments on his side of the ball. Leave poor Pear Bear alone he’s not wrong this time

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

That still wont stop some of these idiot fans calling for Trask after every interception!

Word of advice- Every NFL QB throws interceptions, deal with it!

  20. puttn4bird Says:

Two of those interceptions wern’t 100% on Baker. The defense had great blitzes called and disguised bringing extra men. LeBron game was picking up big first downs and Baker was slinging the ball around. Has an OU fan and Baker being one of my favorite Sooners, I’m so glad that he’s tearing it up this year.

  21. Randal Parmer Says:

All I know is about 33% of the Bucs fans on here we’re ragging Baker and complaining about the contract before the season. As a BROWNS fan I told you not to worry BAKER us the real deal. The BROWNS Front office / Owners / STEFANSKI were the problem. Baker will never be able too play at 60% which is what his last year in Cleveland was. The so called COACH OF THE YEAR played him injured with limited talent around him. It has cost the fans and the team 6 years of PATHETIC FOOTBALL remember Watson is SO GOOD we fired the OC and last years back up QB. I WILL ROOT FOR BAKER MAYFIELD even against the CRAPPY ORGANIZATION that crapped on him. GO BUCS AND GO BAKE!

  22. Brent Says:

LOOK AT THE LOAF ON SHEPARD! How many penalties on him yesterday, including critical drive killers? 3, 4? And he continued to get the ball. *spew*

  23. BAKERSBucs says Says:

C those browns fans r true fans u baker haters need to listen to true fans u people suck, baker cud b SB bound & u wud still complain we were 3& 1 last season then on a skid now 4&2 so this season is on good footing.i don’t think the ravens r that special as the media fawns on them have u ever noticed when Lamar talks is it me or does he sound like a dumb moron

  24. Dave Pear Says:

    Todd is great!

  25. Gipper Says:

No problem with Bowles except wonder why he didn’t immediately pressure a rookie QB? In first half there were no blitzes or meaningful pressure. Without a dominant EDGE rusher the Bucs have to rely on the blitz to get to the QB. Second half Bucs unpacked the blitzkrieg and really rattled Rattler. See how I did that with alliteration?

  26. Gipper Says:

Baker TD passes will go down a little if Tucker and Bucky get more playing time. Coen won’t be afraid to call running plays in the red zone. We will see fewer 4yard TD passes which is OK with everyone if we have a dependable running game.

  27. Gipper Says:

Very, very, very quiet today from the Baker Hate Brigade. Where are you Munchman? After Q2 yesterday you were ready to pounce, but Baker never got rattled and the whole team responded very well in the second half. Bowles gets a lot of credit for steadying the team and changing up the defensive pressure.

  28. Marky Mark Says:

All the Baker haterz disappeared. Onielbuc, Rod Munchenstein, David etc. I recall one guy saying he would take Watson over Baker. Depervert is last in QBR.

  29. Gipper Says:

    Marky Mark,

Munchman is despondent that the Bucs are succeeding with Baker running the show. At least, Muncher can still talk to his Tom Brady poster he has in his bedroom. Problem is his left arm gets tired holding that poster up once a day. MiddlingMunch, in case you missed it Brady had 4INT’s in a single game 6 times in his career. It happens even to GOATs.

  30. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

You Baker Karen Brigade need to get over yourselves. Before your beloved moxieboi jetisoned by the Sad News Browns we were Buc fans. Unlike you we follow our team not a player. As much as I want him to do good because it means we do good I can’t wait for him to leave or retire so most of you Baker Moisty Bois will leave and find you another teat to latch on to. Baker showed as much bad last year as he did good that’s why we weren’t sold on him like you estrogen filled cheerleaders. Nothing worse than a bunch of Karen’s drumming up problems so they can complain!

  31. Gipper Says:

    DavidBigBucsFan99,

Your anti Mayfield club keeps rehearsing your bakerboi lines. Now that Baker has made a joke out of you clowns you no longer can fire at him, you fire at the people who told it was going to happen. Go back into your treasure trove of John Mckay memories. This is 2024 and Florida is a second home for many around the country.

  32. adam from ny Says:

as long as bad azz bake keeps living in the boiler room, under the stadium, and eating off a makeshift hotplate, rigged up to an electrical wire, while wearing the same fruit of the looms everyday – until gameday, and sleeping on a ratchety old cot in a room with no a/c or wifi……..he shall rock on!

hard time call for hard men !

    #BakersCookinInThePot

  33. Monty Says:

It’s a long season.wait until week 17 to boast, let’s all celebrate this win for a few days, baker almost broke his neck trying to run for a first down on a broken play.keep your feet on the ground baker! We need a decent QB for 17 weeks.Muccullum and Dean were getting burnt/ toasted like always, secondary must turn into the recievers and just look back for the pass, missed opportunity for more interceptions.Evans ,well butter fingers ( evans)looks scared and it shows on the field. Be tougher evans.Godwin played tougher and was hard to bring down after a catch.and again special teams blew it.good thing we played tougher this week( accept the 2nd quarter).overall good job bucs! there’s room for alot of improvement. Stay healthy and play tougher and smarter.

  34. Suggiefresh Says:

Better get that official title and checkbook ready for Liam Coen or he may get HC offers following 2024 season. Hopefully, he will want a legacy building a consistent winner here in Tampay Bay but I surely wouldn’t bet the house on it. One and done?

  35. Callahan 22 Says:

You’re right! If Baker came from a blue state, it would be different, but oh well. Anyways, I’m just glad that Tampa finally gets to see what Oklahoma and Cleveland saw. I’ve been telling you guys since you signed him (despite all the hate from the Traskers who have magically disappeared), this guy is a stud with the right players and coaches just like what is required for any other super star qb to thrive.

  36. Don'tBmad Says:

Baker needs massive help against the Ravens. He can put up 28 points but can the defense limit Lamar to 27 or less? It will be the measuring stick

  37. Esteban85 Says:

Joe that’s why nobody watches BSPN anymore and why you fellers are the top Bucs website in the world. Nobody sources their information from bias mainstream news outlets anymore. Independent media is the only way. Thanks Joe for kicking ass and taking names! Almost Shït my pants when I heard Stevie ask Todd about Devin White. Y’all are the only folks in the news room with balls
