Todd Bowles Says He Hasn’t Been In Touch With Devin White

October 11th, 2024

It’s been a bunch of days since former Bucs linebacker Devin White negotiated his release from the Eagles.

So Joe asked Todd Bowles today if he’s been in touch with White and if White is someone he’d consider for the Bucs, if necessary. The Bucs have injuries a major injury at inside linebacker and starter K.J. Britt has been very shaky.

Bowles said he hasn’t been in touch with the Bucs’ 2019 first-round pick and he noted he’s been very busy this week. But Bowles didn’t rule out White and said the usual coachspeak regarding consulting regularly with Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht on team needs.

So there you go. Bowles could have given a quick, “No” on White, a hero of the 2020 Bucs’ Super Bowl season, but seemed open to the possibility.

    interesting

  2. Beeej Says:

A former employer saying that you’re not eligible for rehire is a death sentence. He’s probably just being polite

  3. ocala Says:

I highly doubt they will sign him. Burned his bridge in Tampa.

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

Devin will get another shot. Don’t think it will be with the Bucs though.

  5. richbucsfan Says:

Bowles sad HE wasn’t in contact with DW. That doesn’t mean Licht hasn’t. Coach speak never gives the full story.

  6. Hodad Says:

Joe loves beating a dead horse.

  7. Oneilbuc Says:

Devin White is better than KJ Britt I wouldn’t mind bringing him back only because he’s better than what we have now.

  8. Buc4evr Says:

Sign White on a prove it contract. Maybe he has learned a lesson?

  9. rrsrq Says:

But has LVD been in contact with White? Bowles I am sure will be consulted, but this may be a locker room decision, if we have leaders like we say we do with LVD, Vita, and Winfield

  10. Crickett Baker Says:

Devin asked for his release from the Eagles because they weren.t playing him. Same old Devin. We don’t need him.

  11. Farmer Says:

White thought he was better than he is, he got lazy and his play suffered. Hopefully getting released from the Eagles serves as a wakeup call and he starts putting effort in, he could still easily be a very good LB but i doubt it will ever be for the Bucs, he will have too much pride to come back to Tampa with his tail between his legs.

  12. unbelievable Says:

We could certainly use him, but I don’t think he’ll be back. Too much pride from both sides (him and the organization).

Plus he doesn’t fit the “Buccaneer man” culture… Same reason why they wouldn’t make a move for Reddick, despite DESPERATELY needing a pass rush.

  13. Tucker Says:

    Lol whatever

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Buc4ever suggested we sign White to a prove it contract. Actually not a bad idea at all. The season is long and others will go down with injuries. White just might come in here fired up like hell and try to prove to Bowles he still got it. You never know.

  15. Bucsalltheway Says:

He wouldn’t play special teams the entitlement lol that is what Philly wanted from him mr. I am ready to do whatever the coach ask of me lol simple test and he failed play special teams…Devin white: no coach!=uncoachable and not a team guy. I tip my hat to jameis though he hasn’t quit on teams he’s a pros pro Devin is a bozo so no bro

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Jason’s probably talking to him asking if he can get his head out of a__ long enough to play this year.

  17. Beeej Says:

My annoying eagles fan buddy says what he heard beyond White not wanting to play special teams, is he would not or could not learn the playbook

  18. SenileSenior Says:

Bowles used to defend him. Was that “coach speak” then? I wonder what he thinks about him now?

    Go Bucs!

  19. Gipper Says:

White is bad news and demoralizing for a team trying to win a playoff berth. He needs to be some other team’s problem. I vote for Atlanta.

  20. Larrd Says:

White probably hasn’t been humbled yet, thus the demand for the release. If he doesn’t get any offers for a month, that might do the trick.

  21. Ol' Boy Says:

I’m still trying to find the path through which either side would even want to talk about coming back. Maybe I lack imagination but who would want to have to revisit all the mess that was left when Devin left.
Seriously, there is no way I’d even consider returning to a team that didn’t pick up my 5th year option much less the one that benched me for someone else. Guys this isnt an episode of The Boys and Devin isn’t A train or the Deep. This is quicksand and no one is going to step into. Nothing good comes from your fantasy of the return of DW.
    Let it go.

  22. Kgh4life Says:

DW is not a good football player, it could change, but he needs to do some self reflection and work on his overall game. He definitely has the speed, but speed can only take him so far.

  23. Keith Henig Says:

The Bucs need Defensive help, but Devin White isn’t the answer.

  24. adam from ny Says:

devin white isn’t in touch with devin white

  25. Cover deuce Says:

He doesn’t do anything to address the coverage issues at LB. He’s straight up bad at it and has been for YEARS. Not consistently able or willing to stack and shed vs the run. And he’s a headache! He had a great run in the 2020 playoffs, but you guys keep referencing that as if it wasn’t sandwiched by a career of mediocrity!

  26. Eckwood Says:

Listen ,,, we have pointed out so many times why he is t a good player ,,,,, after his first 6 games it was clearly stated why he isn’t good !! Licht fell in love with the fact that he was a RB , had quick burst and can run down hill ……. his quick burst is only straight ahead. He has no lateral movement. He doesn’t have good hands. He doesn’t have light feet. He’s short , he’s short armed he can’t cover. He doesn’t have any type of pas rush / leverage/ hands skill whatsoever. He’s just not a good player………. Licht made all the classic mistakes as a GM , he fell in love with the one thing he thought his defense needed, and that was a blitz and linebacker. He’s a better GM now, but Devon White is a short short armed, non-lateral , not light on his feet , rock hands n that’s why the Eagles cut him . Peter Schrager went to one practice and saw him run downhill and make a play and anointed him one of the top players in the NFL. We were lucky in the playoffs that a scheme actually allowed him gaps to run wild going downhill and he played great for 3- five games and that’s it his whole career, he is not a good football player . ……….. he was never ever not even once in the top 20 middle linebackers in the league , not ever

  27. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I dunno. I’d take diva for right corner. He has the speed, and it certainly isn’t a down grade.

  28. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Beej

Not sure he ever learned ours.. just ran around with his hair on fire.

  29. Dave Pear Says:

Hope Todd has been in touch with a few professional re-placement specialists (aka “headhunters”) for life after football.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Anything can happen.

He’s now learned that the grass is not always greener elsewhere. Maybe that makes a difference.

But, I do not think he should be handed a starting role.

  31. Bucsfan Says:

I could see White in a Bengals uniform.

  32. Badbucs Says:

    Jabril Cox just became available.

  33. Jeffs grandpa Says:

    0.0% chance diva comes back

  34. Matt_PcAfee Says:

It really makes you wonder how much Tampa was willing to pay if anything at all, he could have kept working and probably had a decent 2nd contract even if it wasn’t ground breaking. He signed for 4M, and forfeited some of that to be released. Crazy stuff.

  35. dbbuc711 Says:

Says a lot to me that no one has signed him

  36. Capt.Tim Says:

If White was better than Britt, he’d still be here.
Like many before him, Devon white let the money and fame go to his head.
    He’s gone mental. He’s done.

I’m kind of curious also, as to when Jason Licht decides to get us a pass rusher. Hes slept on Pass rusher for a couple seasons now.

Use curious. Seems important. When people around the league have been calling your pass rush “impotent” for several years- you’d think our Highly touted GM would consider doing something about it.

    Nope, guess not.
Meybe he’ll have time in his busy schedule to find a pass rusher next year.

  37. Bucfan1988 Says:

Joes, you were also forgetting that forced fumble that Tyker caused with WR Bubb Means in the game.

One of the Many horrendous calls that the refs Were involved in was changing that force fumble to an incomplete pass. That was total BS AND WAS DEFINITELY a fumble.

That would have given Tykee 2 For fumbles and an interception in the game. I would have thought he would have been nominated for defensive player of the week with those stats as well.

There Should be an article this week on the horrendous officiating that the Bucs have experienced in the last several games this year. Yesterday, that was the most atrocious one-sided officiating I’ve ever seen.

Despite the Bucs having to play both the Saints and the refs, they still put the smack down on them.
