“My Sacks Will Come”

October 11th, 2024

So the Bucs’ leading edge rusher in sacks is backup Anthony Nelson. He’s got two and is on a roll after one last week in Atlanta.

It’s a slightly sad reality considering the Bucs’ high hopes for last year’s rookie edge rush beast YaYa Diaby. But hey, the Bucs are 3-2 and about to face a weakened Saints (2-3) team, so Joe can’t moan too much.

Diaby has one sack and Joe thinks it’s fair to say Diaby needs seven more to claim he had a solid season as a full-time starter.

The stat nerds and film-watchers will tell you Diaby is very good at pressuring quarterbacks, but he’s not getting sacks. And that’s his goal.

Yesterday, Diaby, in a somewhat somber tone for a guy who normally is very upbeat, said he’ll keep hammering away at what he can control.

There were no excuses from Diaby. He referenced getting chipped by tight ends, but said, “My sacks will come.”

Joe sure hopes they do.

A sack in November is just as good as a sack in September, though most sacks are better in the postseason, when Diaby had none last year in two games.

Today, Joe will feel optimistic about Diaby coming around and finding his way to 8 sacks. He’s healthy and the return of defensive tackle Calijah Kancey should help Bucs edge rushers.

He is more of a bull rusher and doesn’t have the explosive bend

Do we have any healthy safeties? Between that situation and KJ Britt, it seems to me that Spencer Rattler is going to be finding Olave and Kamara over the middle all game long.

Offense will need to put up at least 30 points to have a chance with this depleted Bowles soft serve zone defense. Saints have not given up 30 points once yet this season…

  3. JimBobBuc Says:

Yaya’s coaches will get him going. Look at how successful they have been with all the other OLB’s.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Proves again that getting all giddy because a guy has a two game stretch and anointing him the next LT is a waste of energy.

I don’t want to hear what is going to happen, put results on tape.

Who can make a play when they need it? Last week, no one. Not Dean. Not Vea. Not David.

  5. BillyBucco Says:

We HAVE to put up 30 lmao
Not one team that has beat the Saints have put up 30.
    That’s a stretch.
I know you are saying because we got carved up last game, but the reality is when Winfield is back, he covers up a lot of mistakes.
Add his timely sacks and forced fumbles and we could be 5-0.
Let’s MOVE PAST the last game and see what we have.
Still a long season to go.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Chris Braswell was the 7th DE/OLB chosen in the 2024 draft. YaYa Diaby was the 15th DE/OLB chosen in the 2023 draft. JTS was the 6th DE/OLB chosen in the 2021 draft. Anthony Nelson was the 15th DE/OLB chosen in the 2019 draft.

Newsflash: We got what we paid for (in terms of draft capital?). Lee Roy Selmon was the 1st player chosen in Rnd 1 of the 1976 NFL draft. Simeon Rice was the 3rd player chosen in Rnd 1 of the 1996 NFL draft. JPP was the 15th player chosen in Rnd 1 of the 2010 NFL draft (the 2nd DE/OLB BTW).

Not very many of the greats get chosen way down the line in the draft, probably for a reason? Doesn’t mean that those chosen later can’t have very good careers, but players like the Watt brothers, the Bosa brothers, etc tend to stand out pretty early it seems (like in college?).

  7. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Please don’t mention Buster Kancey’s name again until he starts making a difference. He is literally not even on the team so far this year. I don’t have much faith right now in NoNo Diaby either.

Has Licht hit on a single pass rusher in the draft? Ever? Maybe Vea, but as NT he’s not really counted on for pass rush specifically. We really need to draft DL in rounds 1,2,3 next year as well as CB. Lotta holes on this defense.

  8. Bucslove Says:

5 games in and our leading OLB in sacks is Nelson and our leading IDL is Hall.

    Who would have thought?

  9. Big Red Says:

I’m very critical of Licht’s draft history. But Devin White was a good pass rusher when used properly. Wasn’t a draft pick but he signed Shaq Barrett who got 20+ sacks and JPP.

    ^^^^^^

PREACH! Joining the Bucs is like getting a Master’s Degree pass rush.

  11. unbelievable Says:

@Jack Burton Mercer – way too premature to call Kancey a bust, especially considering how productive he’s been when healthy. That’s they key though obviously, he needs to start staying healthy.

The average NFL player only plays 13 – 14 games per season, so I’m not gonna dog him for it just yet. Vea has missed plenty of time too.

please leave a sack of potatoes in front of big yaya’s locker…

or a bag of tater tots 🙂

  13. adam from ny Says:

    okay that was cold…lol…

actually a disruptive fast moving kancey weaving about through the line will definitely loosen things up yaya…..and the ghost of shaq & DW too

  14. Hearty Dikerson Says:

We don’t have any explosive edge rushers. Guys like YaYa and JTS may have fast 40 times, but none of them get off the line of scrimmage quick enough to generate consistent sacks. Hopefully Kancey can bring that element to this dline when (if) he actually makes it back on the field.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t believe the Saints are a weakened team. Not for us. We have a rep and Yes, a history for making backup and inexperienced QB’s look like all world.
Bucs need to bring it strong right ut of the gate and hard.

  16. Hodad Says:

YaYa doesn’t have that speed to power. I’ve watched him to many times get stoned by backup tackles with no help from chipping backs, or TEs. Of course it doesn’t help his sack totals when Bowles puts him in coverage where he’s even more useless. We thought we had better talent in YaYa, Kancey, JTS, but they’re average at what they do at best. Licht has never hit on an OLB in the draft. JPP, and Shaq weren’t drafted. Licht would be better served using some picks to trade for a real edge, or pay one who might become a FA.

  17. 1#bucsfan Says:

Might take kancey a few games to get back in game shape but this will deff help yaya and vea being healthy.

  18. Hodad Says:

“My sacks will come”. So will Christmas, try getting a couple before then.

Well, last I checked, Winfield is not officially back yet. He’s listed as questionable and will be a game time decisions, just like Jordan Whitehead. And Izien is out too… So who is playing safety for us?

And did we get someone to replace KJ Britt? Looks to me like the middle of the field is gonna be wide open all day long again.

So yah, prob need 30 just to keep up, rookie and all.

  20. David Says:

Um…. No….. they do not. This is the NFL, you have to go get them. He needs At least eight more

  21. Gipper Says:

On the off chance Jason Licht pays attention to this blog, I am going to keep pushing trading Tampa 1 and 2 round 2025 for Myles Garrett. With each Browns weekly humiliation, this trade looks possible.

I doubt Jason is searching the comments section of JBF for trade ideas BUT you’re not wrong. I can’t imagine there’s anybody playing on that dumpster fire of a team that wouldn’t want out ASAP.

Cleveland makes the Panthers look like a functional, well run, professional organization.

    Can Trask play ILB?

  24. drdneast Says:

I’m not worried about Diaby, I just wonder how much JTMs is making giving dancing lessons to all the tackles around the league.

  25. drdneast Says:

Joe, why do you think the Browns and Winston were the perfect marriage. Water seeks its own level. The Browns just found someone to drive the clown car.
