Crafting A Defense For Spencer Rattler

October 10th, 2024

Slimy Saints QB Spencer Rattler.

So yesterday when Todd Bowles spoke to the local pen and mic club from his New Orleans hotel as Hurricane Milton was barreling toward Siesta Key (that asshole did have to pick one of the best beaches in the state), he did not know who the slimy Saints were starting at quarterback.

The slimy Saints announced later it would be rookie Spencer Rattler.

So how will Bowles devise a gameplan to stop Rattler? He said it will be combination of predraft research and studying Clint Kubiak’s offense.

As Bowles smartly suggested, it’s unlikely the slimy Saints will deviate from their offense with a rookie making his first start.

“[It’s] probably difficult because of the unknown, Bowles said. “I mean, we’ve watched the preseason tape, and we [saw] them coming out. We did our due diligence when they were coming out of school and everything else.

“Both can get rid of the football, both can use their legs when they need to and both are very accurate on the deep ball, and they have deep-ball receivers.

“So we don’t expect much to change from an offensive standpoint in that way.”

Joe doesn’t see this as a difficult task.

Did Jayden Daniels kill the Bucs? He hurt them, sure. But if Rattler threw better than Daniels or ran better than Daniels, he wouldn’t have been drafted in the fifth round.

Daniels was the No. 2 overall pick. Big difference.

Send the blitz on Rattler to rattle him.

  2. Hodad Says:

If we can’t stop Spencer Rattler, the season’s over. It would be the beginning of the end of the Bowles era.

  3. Kenton Smith Says:

Thanks Bucs Guy. We could all use a grin to start our day.

  4. Kenton Smith Says:

Rattler was a 5 star player. Not a runner like Daniels or Jackson. His strength is his arm. Same size as Baker and similar arm. Might run for 25 yards a game. But not nearly as good as Baker. In his first start in the league there should be no chance for him to beat us. He gets shook when things aren’t working out hence the 5th round selection.

  5. Xristos Says:

So the best plan is probably to just have a 4 man rush (even if it is ineffective) and sit back in soft zones with playing 10 yds off the receivers, Right ?
Oh and dont forget even if a rookie QB finds it easy with quick uncontested throws and have like 200+ yds in the 1st half dont worry. Stick to the plan that is not working and dont make adjustments. This is the way.
Honestly i dont know what to expect. We have seen this movie to many times and most of them does not end well. I m just tired of the talk. If the mentality does not change then the team and the results wont change.
    Go Bucs

  6. kaimaru Says:

Spencer Rattler doesn’t have a good pocket presence

  7. Knothead71 Says:

Punch him in the mouth, early and often! Doesn’t necessarily have to be a sack, just make sure it’s not a penalty for a late hit.
Kancey should be salty, maybe YaYa gets back there, if nothing else just make sure Vea gets a 1 on 1 and he can just push his guy through Rattler.
No matter what, hit Rattler hard enough to make him piss his pants. Make him see ghosts.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We caught Daniels early…..wouldn’t want any part of him now……don’t underestimate any NFL QB…..Take away their run game…

  9. Bucnjim Says:

Blitzing isn’t going to do crap just like with Bo Nix. Doesn’t anyone wonder why young guys have success against our D? It’s bend but don’t break meaning they give up the short underneath quick hits. Balls out in 2 seconds long before pass rushers even get out of their stance. Some teams and coaches (Payton) specialize in this attack. Look for Kamara catching out of the backfield and Olave playing out of the slot. Both TE’s will also be used in the middle of the field. The Bucs when playing well will keep opponents out of the end-zone, but if they’re not well look for more of a Bronco’s style result.

  10. BuxfaninTX Says:

Seems like first time starting QBs have a history of torching Todd’s defenses

  11. DCone Says:

If the Bucs had to play against Daniels and the Commanders Sunday i don’t think the results would be the same. That win was more on Dan Quinn and his decision to play a soft zone in a teaching game for his secondary. Based on the current standings of 14th in passing defense (14 spots higher than the Bucs) it was a smart move.

As far as Daniels being drafted in the First Round and Rattler the Fifth being a big difference the only difference is teams needing QB’s in the first round ended at Bo Nix and the next QB chosen was Rattler.

Bo Nix beat the Bucs in his third start. Only advantage that the Bucs have with Rattler is like Daniels they are facing him in his first start and History favors Rookies losing their first NFL start.

Rattler was great at Oklahoma until he was bumped by Caleb Williams. Perhaps Joe is right about Rattler in that he couldn’t beat out a Bum like Caleb Williams for a starting job. To put it in perspective. Where was Williams drafted and did he win his first start? #1 and Yes for those unaware.

One thing that cannot be predicted the Beginners Luck.

  12. Leopold Stotch Says:

It’s either going to go really well for us or really bad. No in between. He’ll look like Herbert or Levis.

  13. Razor Ramone Says:

    Brock Purdy, T J Stroud, Bo Nix……

  14. Gofortheface30 Says:

Trade for Greg Newsome, an actual top tier corner who WILL be available. I’ll take a 24yr old top tier corner over a 30yr old malcontent who ISNT top tier edge rusher

  15. BucNasty Says:

Rush him up the middle. Tight coverage outside, don’t let Shaheed get over the top. Hopefully Kancey being back will help. Be safe everyone

  16. Badbucs Says:

Did we get a replacement for Britt yet? I hope I just missed it.

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

Kamara and Olave – they will be Rattler’s targets.
    Kancey returning helps alot.
Bucs OLine will be tested this week. Baker must avoid turnovers as he has been doing.

  18. Matt_PcAfee Says:

    I have a bad feeling about this…

  19. LJ's Daddy Says:

I don’t like this set up. Sooooo Bucs to let this guy go off. I cant remember how many back ups and rookies we have made look like hall of famers. Man, I hate the Aints…

  20. Kyle Bush Says:

Why do I feel like we’re gonna make Spencer Rattler look like an MVP candidate?

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Robert Saleh is known for solid and consistent defense. Rumor has it, he is available.

  22. Hopein1hand… Says:

The Bucs ought to have Britt hold a clip board while the small, quick and agile players on the roster line up on the field in what we’ll call the “mongoose” personnel grouping. That is how to defeat Snake Rattler.

  23. Gipper Says:

    On any given Sunday,………………………

  24. Josh Says:

If Kancey is Back. He will be on his Backside alot and that will help tremendously. Vea, Kancey, Hall coming on finally, Maybe just maybe JTS and Braswell can get in on the action. A pass rush would negate alot of the defensive problems I feel…

  25. August1976Buc Says:

Lets see, play scared puzzy defense by a certain corner, and any rookie can do well enough to win. The sooner Dean’s replacement is found the better.

  26. Gofortheface30 Says:

August1976- agree 100% but, Bowles has him playing zone because of talent deficiency in other areas, he’s a much better man corner

Where were Tom Brady, Warren Moon, and Kurt Warner drafted?

I liked Rattler in college. The kid has serious juice.

I don’t buy this “rook QB, no problem, easy peasy, just show up” stuff at all.

    At. All.

  28. BillyBucco Says:

Rattler really is a see it throw it QB though. No way will he look of defenders and anticipate throws in zone. Finding open receivers in college and hitting them with superior arm talent is WAY different the NFL. We will see exactly the same defense we saw last week unless Winfield actually plays. He makes a huge difference blitzing and switching with Whitehead in the box.
Stopping Kamara in the run game and quick flares will be paramount because they will have this guy getting rid of the ball quickly to start. I would be shocked if they back him up and expect him to pass downfield on the first drive. Let’s see if Bowles can actually anticipate what they will do and design a scheme, or just continue to say this is what we do and we just need to communicate better and execute.
    Jury is out

  29. Chad Says:

I just know the track record of Todd’s defense vs rookie qbs is not a good one. Theres no nfl tape on him to even prepare for him. I would not be surprised if we lose this game due to the defense

Not so concerning his soft coverage, Dean has played scared for years. I talked much about this in 2021, Dean has the talent and speed. This is flat out a confidence issue with Dean, not a talent issue. The play late in the Atlanta game when he popped off the receiver, instead of laying on the guy and it taking a few seconds longer, is a good example of how Dean plays way to often.

  31. A Bucs Fan Says:

Ask Tykee! He picked Rattler off in college

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

Some here think this Win is on Automatica. But our history indicates, Rookie QBs overall have field days on us and wack us into the losing column. So Bucs gotta bring the A game or else….ESPN is going to be talking bout how a rook made the Bucs Defense look stupid.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Ask Bo Nix how tough a time he had shredding the Masturmind’s way-off deep zone coverage. Rattler? You’ll be the talk of the league in three days. Imagine how many yards you think you’ll throw for. Then add 100.

Jason should tell Todd we’re interviewing Saleh for a new Defensive Coordinator position effective immediately.

  34. unbelievable Says:

Yeah, lets overlook another rookie QB… smart.

  35. BLM Says:

Spencer Rattler has started for SEC South Carolina Gamecocks for 2 years and stats did not show his leadership, athletic ability, and decison making. Stats show played in 48 career contests… posted a 28-14 record in 42 career starts… completed 900-of-1,313 career passes (68.5 pct.) for 10,807 yards with 77 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.

I live in Columbia SC and watched all of the game cock games. I am life long buc fan as I grew up in Tampa. Spencer has heart of champion and will become saints starting QB for a long time. Bucs need to be ready for better than Brock Purdy like QB as this guy can flat out ball. I was hoping Jason would draft him in 5th round or sooner, but it is what it is. He was also MVP of the senior bowl. Do not take him as another rookie QB, but I am biased. Go Bucs!!!
