Devin White Released By Eagles

October 8th, 2024

Free man.

Philadelphia has had enough.

Former No. 5 overall pick of the 2019 draft, ex-Bucs linebacker Devin White, was released by the Eagles today, per NFL Network.

Until this offseason, White as a professional only knew a Todd Bowles defense. At times with the Bucs, he played linebacker at a totally elite level. The Bucs may not have won a Super Bowl in February 2021 without White playing out of his mind in the postseason.

And now, with the Bucs having a serious hole at inside linebacker, what do the Bucs do?

K.J. Britt, who was supposed to replace White, has been exposed. He’s a nice guy off the bench and perhaps a decent rotational player. As a full-time starting inside linebacker, Britt just doesn’t cut it.

And we saw how Atlanta exposed him.

So the question is, now that White is a free man, if he clears waivers, do the Bucs swallow their pride and bring him back into the locker room? The Bucs will not find an available linebacker who knows Bowles’ defense like White.

Or, do the Bucs not want White and his attitude infecting young teammates?

  1. Richard Dickson Says:

Wouldn’t be the Bucs swallowing their pride if White comes back.

  2. Pryda30 Says:

Bring him back please we have nothing to lose a motivated D white is good for a few sacks

  3. Josh Says:

For free… ask the locker room and kick the tires hopefully he’s humbled. Can’t be worse than Britt was… Same maybe? but at least a little faster lol

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

I would bring him back if he clears waivers. It’s a low risk move, it don’t cost much. He may decide to take advantage of his second chance here. Why not? It’s low risk, high reward .

  5. Gipper Says:

This guy was cancer last year. Have him get a real job driving a Tampa city bus.

  6. Bucs 95 Says:

The fall off is real šŸ˜¬

  7. Mort Says:

If he comes in humble and with a small price tag… otherwise, nope.

  8. Stillabucsfan Says:

Bring him back, aside David we can keep David in coverage and use 45 to blitz, keep Britt off the field until he can improve in coverage.

  9. BuxfaninTX Says:

Bring him in, if his attitude sucks, cut him. Heā€™d be finished at that point

  10. Bucs Guy Says:

No thank you. You got rid of him for attitude AND lack of performance.

  11. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I’m not on the edge of my seat hoping he comes back, but with Denis out for who knows how long and KJ struggling it might be a marriage made in heav….. well maybe not there.

  12. heyjude Says:

Nothing against Devin. But he didn’t want to be here the first time. It didn’t work out in Philly. Our team has chemistry and free of drama. No.

  13. Rich Says:

Forget about this total jerk…not a good person and not a good football player!!! Teams don’t cut good players….we held on to him for too long. He ist the answer, period!

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

Remember last year, when the defense improved after White was benched? White is every bit as bad in coverage as Britt. The only thing White has is speed, which he uses to overrun plays and miss tackles. So, absolutely not.

  15. SteelStudBuc Says:

I say bring him back. We often forget these guys are young men still learning life’s lessons. I bet lots of these guys consider him family. He’d be motivated by a 2nd chance guaranteed!

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If he eats a bit of humble pie and a big load of Ricky Bobbyā€™s $hitā€¦..why not give him a second chance.

  17. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Mixed feelings on this.

We’re in major need of help at linebacker. (And edge rush)

White knows the system. He’d be up to speed on it real quick.

This reminds me of Jason Licht saying they don’t want to draft someone who’s available just to fill a position of need. They’re more holistic. “I am that player”. “I am that man”.

White was cancerous last year and his performance has dropped way off.

There’s got to be a quality linebacker sitting at home somewhere waiting for the phone to ring.

    I vote no.

  18. Bojim Says:

How the mighty have fallen. lol

  19. Let em bake Says:

    Bring him in. Now.

  20. SteveK Says:

Letā€™s win another chip with Devin playing with his hair on šŸ”„

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Our goal is to win. White’s helped us do that in the past and MIGHT be able to help us do that in the future. Assuming he clears waivers, it doesn’t hurt to kick the tires.

  22. tucker Says:

Might as well save the money and stick with Britt for the same result white is equally if not worse in coverage. At least with Britt he doesn’t leave his teammates high and dry and stays disciplined with his assignments.

  23. heyjude Says:

Thinking more about it I agree with Vanessa, Tampabaybucfan, and others. I am still on the fence with it, but will he eat some humble pie and be a better team-mate? And would the other players want him back. That could be a deal breaker too. And yes, there could be other LBs sitting at home waiting for a call. It may not hurt talking to him and bringing him in for a look.

  24. LakelandSteve Says:

We have a murderers row schedule coming up in the next few weeks. It wouldnā€™t be the worse thing in the world to re-sign him and if he doesnā€™t have a better attitude and play well, cut him again. The biggest thing is he knows Bowles defense. Give him a shot.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

    I could go either way.

Bucs have a glaring hole where he used to be, but the guy can also be an arrogant head case.

Maybe a closed-door session with Bowles and Licht might be worth the time.

  26. Hearty Dikerson Says:

    I donā€™t understand all these comments about ā€œif heā€™s learned his lessonā€ ā€œmaybe this humbled himā€

The Eagles were his second chance and just cut him. Obviously heā€™s learned nothing. Donā€™t bring this turd back.

  27. Cobraboy Says:

    Rich Says:

    Teams donā€™t cut good playersā€¦

Rich, have you met Baker Mayfield?

  28. Buccos Says:

This is an easy decision. Give him a 2nd chance. If he performs and is good in the locker, great. If not let him go. He should be on a short leash. Heā€™s not a bad guy. He doesnā€™t beat women or do drugs or grope Uber drivers, so why not?!?

  29. LakelandBuc Says:

I would bring him back as a pass rusher, that’s his strength.

  30. Pewter Power Says:

Licht would have to also swallow his pride to bring him back also For the arrogant ones and there are 30 other teams out there he doesnā€™t need Tampa he could easily end up in Atlanta or Carolina or any other horrible team. Heā€™ll be signed almost immediately by some desperate team. Heā€™s an a hole which is what this team needs as long as he helps us win Iā€™m down.

I have nothing personal against Devin White, I want the best player to play no matter what position. He wasnā€™t performing so walk the plank. I am also team first Devin

  31. Josh Says:

I would prefer to trade for Myles Garrett, as suggested in another article by a different poster first. Personally I believe it would require two first-round picks, given that he is only 28 and considered an elite pass rusher at that age for at least a few more years.
    But maybe:

Initial Offer: Start with a **first-round pick** and **Joe Tryon-Shoyinka**.

    2. If they show interest, consider adding a **third-round pick** to enhance the offer.

    3. If they agree to the deal today, you could include a **fifth-round pick** as an additional incentive. However, if they wish to wait until the deadline, they would lose the fifth-round pick.

This is like Draft day and I doubt it would work lol….

Would you consider two first-round picks, or is that too much?

  32. A Bucs Fan Says:

    Low effort player. Pass

  33. Bucnjim Says:

White just doesn’t want to play football any longer. Good for him I guess, probably made 20-30 million already. Not everyone has the fire Levante David has. Like the song says go on and take the money and run.

  34. LakelandBuc Says:

    Josh,

The Bucs could have traded with the Bears for Khalil Mack if that’s the case. The Chargers gave the Bears a 2nd and a 6th..

  35. Fernando Says:

    He better than Britt

  36. Josh Says:

    He’s 33

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs better have a plan to stop Spencer Rattler.
    Forget bringing White back.

  38. Josh Says:

So that’s 5 more years of an elite pass rusher if he keeps playing and doesn’t retire obviously. What’s that worth?

Sorry finger accidently hit submit after he’s 33…

  39. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Our plan to replace him is working about as well as his plan to replace us.

  40. J Says:

I understand the NO’s, but you never know. IF he comes back, I’m hoping the conversation is constructed in a way that let’s White know this is probably your last chance. Either get out there and perform, or kick rocks. We don’t have to pay him a kings ransom, we just need him to be the guy who helped us win a SB, because I believe he can still be that guy.

  41. LakelandBuc Says:

Mack was 31 when the Chargers traded for him, he’s 33 now. But he had 17 sacks last season. The Chargers gave the Bears a 2nd for Mack, and a 6th. That’s the type of trade Licht should be looking for…

  42. Guadalajara Mexico Fan Says:

To the Practice Squad. There he would understand that has to be humble

  43. dbbuc711 Says:

It will say a lot if no team claims him off waivers

  44. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Get him. He balled out game 1 last year and then got hurt. He knows the defense and assuming he his fully healthy is a top tier athlete that already knows the playbook. Teams don’t find that fit for a position they are thin at in the middle of a season often

    Classic.

  46. Bubby Says:

Pick him up immediately. He knows the defense and has something to prove. Anyone watch karim hunt last night?

  47. #99 the big fella Says:

Who do we have better? I will wait?? I say bring him in and let him battle it out

  48. Josh Says:

OK I tried i give up lol… I’ll try this one last time… Mack was drafted by Raiders traded to Bears at 27 for 2 first a 3rd and 6th. Garrett is 28. Sorry it’s short I tried 20 times and it won’t post for some reason.

  49. Waterboy Says:

Carolina should be at the top of the waiver wire. Welcome to the Panthers nation Mr. White!! lol

  50. Kenton Smith Says:

If L. David and A. Winfield and M. Evans went to Bowles and said give him another chance – thatā€™s the only way I take him back.

  51. PewterStiffArm Says:

Do we think he will be a distraction Joe?, the second time around? I tend to say, I don’t think so. He had to swallow Philly pie, maybe he has changed. Or maybe, just maybe, he hasn’t. But if this team tries a second marriage after a bitter divorce, my money is on him succeeding. He is still young and with a new team attitude might just bring him around. If not they can say goodbye to him once again at the end of the year. Knowing Bowles, it might just be in the makings.

  52. Pelsbuc61 Says:

No need for the loafer part 2. Either trade for a LB or train IZien or Tykee Smith to play LB

  53. Bucnjim Says:

That’s like having a little cold, but wanting to bring in a cancer.

  54. Capt.Tim Says:

White had become a mental case..
Dont touch him with a 10 foot pole

  55. White Tiger Says:

Been asking myself this same questionā€¦. and been torn.

It would be a low risk move, price would be right, and he knows the offenseā€¦but then thereā€™s Devin being Devinā€¦

Iā€™m leaning toward doing it – I donā€™t have to see more of KJ Britt trying to cover to get on-board.

  56. Bobby Says:

Do it! Go get him Jason & Todd. Everyone deserves a second chance. Come on back, Get Live 45!

  57. stpetebucfan Says:

I pretty much agree with the majority. I have two questions.

Can he play? I agree with Lakeland Buc. While DW45 may overrun plays in the open field and is not particularly good in coverage, he DOES have speed and is a good pass rusher. He’s only a dozen lbs lighter than Shaq Barrett and he has enough size to do that job. That’s issue #1. Can he still play. If AWJ returns and can help fill the middle DW45 might be a good addition.

Issue #2 His head!!! Where is it. As D.R., TBBF and others have expressed it’s at least worth kicking the tires. Part of that will be a real vetting of DW45’s mental condition. The locker room is tight now! Please no more cancers! Perhaps DW45 has eaten enough humble pie to cure his problems.

So while I agree with the majority I probably break here…I TRUST Todd Bowles to find the answer to those two questions successfully. If Todd signs off I”m good.

While I do not enjoy Bowles D first mind set I do respect his relationship with and knowledge of NFL players.

  58. BigMacAttack Says:

Absolutely take him back on a prove it contract, but only if he wants to come back.

  59. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Bring him back, I’m sure the guys miss playing the tunk games he started…

  60. Beeej Says:

His pff (before he was benched) last year was 48

  61. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I would be happy to bring White back. He is a one trick pony, but he does it well. We need more sacks, and he can contribute in that area. His pass coverage canā€™t be worse than Britt. On another note, I would love for Bowles to hire a defensive coordinator who can focus exclusively on defense. Conveniently, there is suddenly a really good former defensive coordinator available in New York.

  62. LakelandBuc Says:

    Josh,

I get your point, you’re saying that the Browns would want a return similar to what the Raiders got for Mack.

    Two 1st round pick
    3rd round pick
    6th round pick

  63. Badbucs Says:

It’s a no risk deal. No picks spent, small money and cut at the first sign of an issue. I would guess one of our NFC south brothers will grab him first just to mess with us. Good timing for us though. Thanks Eagles.

  64. Josh Says:

I had a longer post with stats that didnā€™t go through, but yes, LakelandBuc.
Is trading for JTS instead of two first-round picks worthwhile to the Browns? Would Reddick for a third and sixth be a better option?
Joe, a poll could be great.
Here are some options to consider:
    1. Trade for Reddick without giving up first-round picks.
    2. Trade Garrett for multiple firsts.
    3. Stick with our current players: Vea, JTS, YaYa, Hall, and Kancey.
    4. Explore other pass rushers.
Itā€™d be interesting to see fansā€™ thoughts and whether Kancey can make a difference. Personally, Iā€™m leaning towards Reddick or trusting Kancey when he gets back healthy, given Garrett’s potential cost.

  65. Buddha Says:

You will soon understand the reason he declined so dramatically. Drugs. He likely faces suspension.

  66. Josh Says:

How can Munch call people idiots, which I personally find funny, but my post gets restricted? It doesnā€™t make sense to me. Itā€™s well thought out and professional, creating a space where conversation is invited. Yet the internet doesnā€™t like something. I wish there were guidelines so I would know what I can and can’t post.

But yes LakelandBuc is that worth it? Or Reddick for less? Or someone else? Or just trust Kancey when he comes back Healthy with the other guys Vea, YaYa, Hall, and JTS?

  67. jameswillie Says:

Bowles is a father figure to him. Bring him back and a chance at redemption. We will know quickly if it works. If not, cut him. . . Of course, he will have to say the right things prior to returning and quickly back it up. . .

  68. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Buddha got any evidence to back that claim? No one has ever reported Devin to party like Josh Freeman, the molly hamster or Mike Williams.

  69. Josh Says:

No. Must Write like Caveman. Not sure why. Yes LakelandBuc. So is that worth it? Or Reddick for less, or trust what we have?

  70. Josh Says:

It won’t let me post anything intelligent sorry… yes lakeland

  71. Capeaceiskaput Says:

    @Ultra ClodHopper
You win the comment section withā€¦
ā€œOur plan to replace him is working about as well as his plan to replace usā€.

  72. Faspro Says:

This is great, bring him back!

  73. Josh Says:

Then they all appear lmao I look like a bumbling idiot… I’m checking out for a few after that I’ll check back in a few hours or somthing… Hope the weather’s not too bad down there already seriously have you all in my thoughts and prayers…

  74. A Bucs Fan Says:

I just read from NBC Philadelphia report that Devin is not subject to waivers because Devin agreed to pay back his salary help erase dead money for the Eagles. He also refused to play special teams and that’s why he was inactive.

Definitely It’s a big NO to this kid. HARD pass with that attitude.

  75. Free Will Says:

I read somewhere that Devin White and the Eagles have an agreement that his release won’t require him to go through waivers and he becomes an instant free agent because it’s before the trade deadline.

  76. Jerseybuc Says:

Maxx Crosby wasnā€™t out I believe. Heā€™s 27. N a game changer. Make the call Jason. Second n trask.

  77. Bucswin! Says:

At this point i would take him back. Its not like we are dripping with chemistry giving up over 500 yards to atl and all. Go BUCS

  78. Creamsicle Says:

I would take White over Britt any day. At least he has the speed to cover the perimeter. He may Not be great in coverage either but heā€™s far better than Britt even in that category because at least Devin has shown a little bit of flare in coverage from time to time. Britt cannot keep up with players in this league physically or mentally. But if I remember correctly you canā€™t resign a player for 2 years that you let go so bring White back dosent seem likely regardless.

  79. Ol' Boy Says:

Id give him the opportunity to take the rest of the season off and gain perspective

  80. Ol' Boy Says:

Britt outplayed DW last year and grabbed his job. DW was let go then signed and then let go. He’s obviously not in a good place and hasn’t been for some time. That’s not a call if make at this time.

  81. GoneGator Says:

    @Josh

The pretty sure the Joe’s moderate comments manually. Sometimes they are “there” when the comments come in an aren’t busy doing something else – if the find nothing objectionable ur comment will appear in minutes. If they are busy doing something else it may take an hour or MORE.

And they do occasionally delete posts they take serious issue with, which they have every right to do.

  82. A Bucs Fan Says:

JC Cornell posted per a source from the Bucs that there is a 0% chance the Buccaneers EVER employ him again.

JC Allen also posted that it’s not going to happen.

We can put this debate to bed and still hope Devin grows up before it’s too late for him.

  83. M1K3_Fanclub Says:

Polluting the locker room with a head case whose narcissistic self-delusion rivals that of the orange face sociopath is a terrible idea. Iā€™d be shocked if they brought him in.

  84. Creamsicle Says:

Regardless of its White or somebody else. Britt should be replaced asap and thatā€™s really the bottom line. There has to be better options available this guy has no business starting on any team.

  85. Joe Says:

The pretty sure the Joeā€™s moderate comments manually.

If they end up in the moderation queue, yes.

  86. Creamsicle Says:

I think if they rotate Grier Jr in during the saints game they will be happy with the results. Guy looked great in coverage and heā€™s the same size as Britt but faster and more athletic.

  87. Jmarkbuc Says:

White has been let go twice now. Why would you want this head case?

He doesnā€™t cover any better than Britt, he just does it faster.

  88. Knothead71 Says:

Why in the world would the Bucs need to swallow their pride? Devin White made this happen.
Decline in his play, runn8ng his mouth to the media and demanding a trade. His current situation is on him.
I don’t believe he has the mental capacity to humble himself. In my opinion he would believe that the Bucs couldn’t make it without him.
Let him kick cans on the street, he ain’t worth the problems he brings.

  89. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I can’t see White clearing wavers. Someone will want to kick the tires on him. His athletic ability is off the charts. Can his brain ever catch up?

  90. Jack Sparrow Says:

Don’t bother. We had him and never worked out. He is a Lemon.

  91. Aceofaerospace Says:

Iā€™d bring him in for a try. If not playing a down for Philly and then getting cut didnā€™t humble him, nothing will.

  92. SenileSenior Says:

Licht and Bowles decided to cut him loose for some reasons. Once is enough.

  93. FortMyersDave Says:

Depends on Antoine Winfield. If he is back, do the Bucs need White?

  94. BucsFan81 Says:

Itā€™s crazy cause at one point white had so much promise. He was so good in 2020 on the superbowl run. Then he got a ring and his ego got huge and he was only in it for the payday. If LVD and other leaders couldnā€™t fix him not sure anyone can or any situation.

  95. Oneilbuc Says:

He’s better than KJ Britt so I say bring him back!!

  96. Pewter Power Says:

Everyone was begging for Britt last year myself included. Licht decided not to draft anyone to replace white, injury prone 5th rounder Dennis was the best damn we have camp meat talent at linebacker. Licht sure does love his undrafted free agents

  97. Beeej Says:

If he was better than Britt then Britt wouldn’t have replaced him last year?

  98. Cobraboy Says:

No waivers for White, by negotiated dealio.

  99. unbelievable Says:

I doubt they bring him back, despite the fact that:
    1. We have a serious need for speed and depth at that position
    2. He knows Todd Bwoles system
    3. He could maybe, possibly, for the first time in his life, have been humbled and have a better attitude

Simply b/c all these guys- players, coaches, front office staff, have too much pride. I don’t think even Licht would consider it. He’s not a Buccaneer man, etc.

But we need help. I’ve been super critical of White but I would gladly take him back now and just let him blitz.

  100. Buckhead Says:

So many people are soiling themselves because the Bucs lost to the Broncos and Falcons. We beat the Redskins, Lions, and Eagles. We had a staggering number of injuries, but more of our best players are now coming back every week. We donā€™t want Devin White and he is not coming back because he is a loafer, a malcontent, he sucks in pass coverage, and he is toxic in the locker room.

  101. Booger Says:

    šŸ’Æ

  102. MadMax Says:

Well i pushed for us to draft him, and it looked like another star notch in my belt, but didnt realize he would turn into such a drama queenā€¦.i dont know, if he comes cheap and has a different attitude, then maybe. But heā€™s gonna complain again about the money againā€¦ if he can just keep his stupid mouth shut and keep his head down and go to work, maybe a 1 year deal CHEAPā€¦. And thats if heā€™s willingā€¦. 2 way street in this. I donā€™t know. Your call Jason.

  103. Kieran Says:

Bet you guys that ā€œRadioā€ has Devin on speed dial and a one way ticket to Atlanta with both coach and player laugh their asses off.

  104. heyjude Says:

I don’t have ‘X’, however apparently Devin did go to his ‘X’ account and wrote some positive and cryptic thoughts. Sounds like he is happy with the move. Possibly he does want a change and new beginning. If the Bucs do not give Devin a chance, there are many other teams that will. Unsure if he still is counting on top dollars.

  105. adam from ny Says:

if garrett is really on the block, gotta figure out a way to get him here…

can’t let him go to detoit or atlanta

  106. adam from ny Says:

DW just did the double flopperooski…

    flopped in thumpa bay…

    flopped out with the iggles…

so basically he’s down to his last chance or last strike…

one more flop and he’s out of the league
