Baker Mayfield Has Helped Spur The Rise Of The NFC South

October 10th, 2024

Impact.

Thanks to bored, ill-researched NFL stenographers typing for various outlets that fangirl for Kirk Cousins, no NFL division was shat upon during the offseason like the NFC South.

It was as if these same writers, when tasked by their editors to type about the NFC South, wailed, “Eeewww… ” like they were forced to dine in at Waffle House.

(Joe’s a covered and chunked kind of guy. Maybe smothered, too, if Joe feels brave and doesn’t have to mingle in public.)

Well, Jeff Chadiha of NFL.com is happy to type that the NFC South may be the most surprising division this season — for its good teams (aside from Carolina and poor Dave Canales) and exciting play.

A big part of that, Chadiha writes, is Baker Mayfield.

Count Joe as one of the many who dreaded Tom Brady leaving. Aside from the massive void left by Brady’s departure, the Bucs then had no quarterback. Bucs fans possibly were look at the next Stewart McClown/Mike Glennon/Byron Leftwich quarterback era. The prospect even made Joe wonder if Trent Dilfer wanted to make a comeback.

As world-famous JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman said on his podcast, Team Glazer was now “staring into the abyss.”

Mayfield making the Pro Bowl last season and currently leading all NFL quarterbacks in touchdown production hasn’t just been a pleasant surprise. He’s made Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Bucs coach Todd Bowles, who pestered Licht to sign him, look damn savvy.

As long as Mayfield plays like he has, the Bucs have a chance. So long as a “Code Turtle” is not ordered. šŸ˜

How dare Joe besmirch the name of waffle house! Scattered, doubled, smothered, and covered. All Star Special for life!

  2. ATLBUC Says:

Through 5 games heā€™s had only one clunker, the Denver game but Iā€™m putting that on coaching or lack thereof.

  3. Beeej Says:

Had to spend a couple nights in WV this week—they HAVE no Waffle Houses there! Was turrible

Joe: What have you heard about Graham Barton and the hamstring?

Nothing. Team is in New Orleans and Joe had his flight from Tampa canceled. Trying to get to New Orleans.

  7. Joe Says:

You and yours make it through alright?

    Think so. Thanks for asking.

  8. Bucs And Them Says:

Hey Joe, Waffle House is a food group, right?ā€¦ā€¦.lolā€¦ā€¦ā€¦The Bucs and Falcons are showing theyā€™re for real. The slimy Saints arenā€™t a pushover but, could start reeling with Carr out. The national media disrespect for the NFC south and, for the Bucs in particular, is typical media elitism. Screw ā€˜em. Wouldnā€™t it be funny if the Bucs & Falcons met in the NFC championship game?

Prayers up for all the Joe’s on Florida be safe and check in with us…

Love to hear from these fan “analysts” that the Denver game was a Mayfield “clunker.” I remember it this way. Goedke was hurt and Mayfield was sacked 7 times. Even the esteemed GOAT, Tom Brady would not have saved the Bucs that day. Here is a thought: If you are going to make a comment here, at least have something sensible to say.

  14. Josh Says:

He said that it was a clunker for Baker, which makes sense. As you mentioned, seven sacks is ridiculous its not ALL on Baker but he missed open throws was quick to leave the pocket and had some happy feet that game no QB is perfect. Some people here seem to be narrow-minded. He made a comment, and instead of discussing it constructively, weā€™re bashing him with phrases like “at least have something sensible to say.” This is the internet; itā€™s full of trolls, and his comment wasnā€™t egregious. He noted that Baker had a poor performance, and if you look at the stat sheet without watching the game, you might assume that’s accurate. I agree with you though, Gipper; In the sense even Brady would have struggled that dayā€”the offensive line was terrible, especially Sucke.

  15. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

Ah Josh. You just gave your true identity away. Only Munch calls Skule Sucke.

Bucs better be careful. I don’t care for Rattler but he’s still talented. Not to be overlooked.

    Go Bics!!

  16. Gipper Says:

    Josh,

I can say what I want. You can say what you want. ATLBUC can say what he wants. In America we call it the 1st Amendment. Donā€™t have to agree with any of you; nor, you with me. Nothing narrow minded about that.

  17. DCone Says:

Division Win Totals the last 10 years in the NFC

    NFCW 337 5 Conference Wins
    NFCN 334 0 Conference Wins
    NFCS 315 3 Conference Wins
    NFCE 314 2 Conference Wins

Roughly 3 more wins a season between between 1st and Last between 4 teams and over 150 combined games does not look domination.

In the Super Bowl Era Eagles Won the most NFC Championships with 21 and 13 Superbowls.

At best the ups and dons come and go pretty quickly

  18. Josh Says:

I feel your statement comes off as narrow-minded I appologise if thats rude. We all have the right to express our thoughts, which is part of the beauty of our country. Disagreeing is fine, but resorting to insults, like calling someone a “fan analyst” and dismissing their opinions as not sensible, is unnecessary and counterproductive.

While I agree that the coaching played a more important/vital role in the team’s performance, it’s more constructive to simply state your disagreement and present your valid points rather than demand someone else provide a “sensible argument”. Maybe you really do know more about football than them or me and there/were just trying to add to the discussion. People like to be heard. Ask my wife and kids lol…

Ultimately YOU ARE RIGHT this loss isnā€™t solely on Baker; it was a team effort, just like in Atlanta. Blame can be attributed to various factorsā€”refs, turnovers, or situational awareness. Ultimately, they lost and need to move on; theyā€™re currently 3-2 and facing the Saints this week against a rookie Quarterback in Spencer Rattler.

They need to win to stay competitive in the division and actually be a playoff team. This week will determine alot.

  19. Gipper Says:

    Josh,

I know you think you know what you thought I said; but what you thought I said, isn’t necessarily what I meant.

    You dig, man?

  20. Josh Says:

I will admit I stole it from Munch Bucks n Bucs but no im not Rod… I appreciate your insights and passion for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Gipper. I just feel Itā€™s important to foster a supportive and united fan base, especially as we strive for success. Encouraging education and open dialogue can enhance our understanding of the game and strengthen our community. The12th man is a real thing it statistically/historically counts for 7 points. If I’m wrong or he/she is wrong let’s have an open educated discussion with analysis. Show them why there wrong with the 7 sacks point it’s a very valid arguement but telling someone just not to speak isn’t cool. How can anyone learn if there always right?? I encourage people to disagree and discuss how else do better ideas come to fruition? How else can someone know that there wrong without having someone more educated on the subject show them why there wrong. You learn more than someone just telling you your wrong.

I’m just saying lets focus on ways to rally support for our team, educate our fanbase. By doing these things we can make Raymond James Stadium a formidable home-field advantage. By building each other up, we can create a family-like atmosphere that energizes our players and enhances our game-day experience. I know that’s what it’s like at Broncos games when I go with the season ticket holders I know. Together, we can contribute to the Buccaneersā€™ success even if its just a little bit.

Go Bucs! I do dig though man if I’m completely off base I appologise just want to see a strong united fan front that’s loud proud and supports there team like i see here in Colorado. Even when the Broncos suck the fans show up and are loud as heck…

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Sure isnā€™t the head coach and his skill for delivering defeat from the jaws of victory. Challenge another play that if successful gives the other team a first down, Todd. Have your team come out flat as a calm pond against rookie of the year Spencer Rattler. Canā€™t wait to see him march right down the field on his first drive for a TD. Everyone knows thatā€™s gonna happen.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

The game a week ago removes the word ā€œsavvyā€ from any association with head couch game mangler Todd.

  23. big jim Says:

well looks like big jim called it correctly again before the season so far, baker right on track, baker the faker is. 1,164, 112qbr, and 11-2, sooo hit on that, go buc’ers

  24. Let em bake Says:

    So much for the ā€œ regressionā€ bakerā€¦šŸ˜‚
