Sunday Results Improve Bucs’ NFC Standing

October 6th, 2024

For all the whining, crying and miserable Buccaneers fans out there, Joe sure hopes this brings you a smile and perspective.

So today, the Seahawks (3-2) got clipped by the lowly Giants in Seattle (2-3), a significant upset. And while it was no upset, the Packers (3-2) knocked off the Rams in Los Angeles, plummeting the Rams to 1-4. That’s a Rams club (with a great head coach) that won 10 games last season!

Even more fun was the 49ers (2-3) losing at home to the Cardinals (2-3). Um, isn’t San Francisco supposed to be the big bad bully of the NFC.

Joe guesses that’s the Lions (3-1), Week 2 losers to the Bucs. Detroit is on its bye week. Or perhaps its Washington (4-1) that’s the class of the NFC. They notched a blowout win of the Browns today. Like Detriot, Washington’s only loss was to the Bucs.

Minnesota (5-0) continued its Sam Darnold fairy tale, taking out the spiraling Jets in England.

So after all that action, the Bucs’ 3-2 record sure doesn’t seem like a reason to curse the Tampa Bay front office, throw knives at the head coach and pout like a butthurt fourth-grader.

The icing on this wacky Week 5 would be a Saints (2-2) loss tomorrow night in Kansas City.

Playing a division opponent on a Thursday night is always a toss up. And they looked good. Not worried. Nice to have a quarterback…

  2. adam from ny Says:

if the playoffs were tomorrow, we are in…

we are sitting in the wild card #6 slot as of right now…

just sayin’…. (yeah i know it’s early for that)

  3. adam from ny Says:

also kamara’s seemingly fresh legs won’t be so fresh as the season wears on…

the past year or so he seemed to have lost a step…

it hasn’t really began to show this year for whatever reason — but it will

  4. adam from ny Says:

also right about now jake camarda is rolling a big fat blunt 🙂

  5. Pewter Power Says:

Oh wait is this yet another year we have to watch the rest of the NFC and hope teams lose to help us get in? This is that why not us speech Bowles was talking about at the start of training camp. Why not us because rest of the nfc might not be not very good this year lol

  6. LakelandBuc Says:

We will win the NFC South again with a 9-8 record

  7. Evo Says:

Yes it is a reason to curse the front office. If we had some pass rush we could be easily 4-1 right now. Also if the team was truly prepared. They could be 5-0 as their 2 losses are shameful and horrible losses. And I feel with a couple better players (Edge and OG) and better coaching. We could and should be 5-0. Wasted chances will kill us in Dec.

  8. LakelandBuc Says:

The problem is Bucs fans don’t want to go back to the sucks days, when they were Bottom Feeders. I can understand that, l feel their pain.

My biggest problem and greatest concern with this coaching staff is not the defense, l know we have major injuries on the defense. But our main offensive weapons are healthy and ready to eat. But this coaching staff keeps them under a short leash.

The opposing defense don’t stop our offense, our offensive coaching staff stops our offense.

  9. DBS Says:

Try to spin it anyway you want. When coaches play not to lose. Players can’t remember things you learn in high school (Dean) . Also keep repeating the same stupid things like taking the ball out of your playmakers hands it is . Plus refusing to get pass rushers to put a QB on hi back and stop picking this secondary apart.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Evo … ‘Wasted chances will kill us in Dec’.

Yea verily. Every game is just as important as every other game.

Our next 5 games … Saints, Ravens, Falcons, Chiefs, 49ers … will be a great test of who this team really is. IF we win 3 of those, we SHOULD be in pretty good shape (at 6-4) to win the NFC South (our last 7 games, after our BYE, SHOULD represent a somewhat easier schedule).

With Atlanta & New Orleans both having good years though, I don’t think 9-8 will cut it. It’ll take at least a 10-7 IMO to win a playoff sport as a wildcard. Right now I think our offense could get us there; not all that sure about our defense. Opponents are surely smelling blood in the water right now. We’ve got to get healthy.

  11. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

While not happy with how the 2nd half was handled, it is kind of reassuring to know we have an offense that can legitimately compete.

Been a couple years since we’ve been able to say that.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Falcons 2-0 in the NFC South
Bucs 0-1 in the NFC South

That’s what, a 2.5 game lead for the Falcons? And it’s 100% on the refs, the Bucs won that game before it was stolen.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

5-0 is what the record should be.

    4-1 would be nice.

    3-2 is meh.

  14. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bucs have Bowles as HC, Britt at LB, no edge rushers. I’m not exactly buying playoff tickets.

  15. Richard Dickson Says:

It’s been a weird season. A lot of good teams have had weird losses. And if you’d told me we’d play the majority of our first five games with the injuries we’ve had and still be 3-2, I’d take that in a heartbeat.

  16. Mac Says:

Agree Pelsbuc. I have never had faith in Bowles. He isn’t ever going to win a Super Bowl and we are wasting our superstars best years in the process. People need to wake up to that. He will always get in his own way. I can’t stand the soft zone he plays. So sick of watching it year after year. Never going to win consecutive games in the playoffs with that. If we lose this week to the Saints I think are playoff chances take a massive hit. If we miss does that get Bowles dismissed. Probably not but if it would I may be ok with not making the playoffs if they hire the right guy. I think this team is a good head coach away from winning it all. Unfortunately I think Coen is gone after this season anyway and we will be on our 4th OC in as many years.

  17. My Momma Says:

No matter how you shine it, it’s still a turd, Joe.

  18. Stillabucsfan Says:

Why after 100 seasons can we still not figure out how to officiate games????? All plays should be reviewable with all of the technology we have in 2024. Ref’s should be there to start game clocks and stop the games when the guys from New York see penalties.

  19. Oz Len Says:

There’s a lot of Cinderella’s out there, Washington, Minnesota, Atlanta to name the obvious. Once cold weather, rain, snow, real football weather hits, I wouldn’t be surprised if the clock hits 12 on some of these teams. Especially when the dome teams start playing road games outside.

    Munch,
That’s one of the few things you have ever written that I actually agree with. Keep it up. I feel like there might be hope for you.

  21. My Momma Says:

Stillabucsfan, the league likes it the way it is. They can manipulate the game for the sake of the betting sites, which some owners are vested in.

  22. FloridaMan Says:

    Love this one Joe!

  23. Kenton Smith Says:

Gipper – sorry, you can’t agree with Rod on his last post because then you’d be wrong too. In the NFC South we’re back 1 and a half games. In the NFC we’re only 1 game back. Come on guys – at least Rod Munch and Gipper keep me grinning.

  24. Kenton Smith Says:

We’re one game back of the 5 – 0 Vikings in the NFC

  25. Buddha Says:

Week 5 Summary: Giants +7 over Seahawks
I posted that pick on Thursday. My posted selection are now 10-5. 67 Per cent. Enjoy the ride!

  26. Pewter Power Says:

Stop blaming the refs please it’s embarrassing! Blame the head coach for his dumb evaluation of quarterbacks he’s facing or not having his team mentally prepared or run game, lack of imagination by coen in the second half or even chalk it up to young rookies like tykee smith and Bucky never playing in prime time

You will see once we play the saints and falcons again that despite having the better roster nfc south title is a toss up and will go to the best coached team so I don’t really like our odds.

Gipper – sorry, you can’t agree with Rod on his last post because then you’d be wrong too. In the NFC South we’re back 1 and a half games.

    ———-

How are they only 1.5 games back?

The Falcons have 2 wins in the NFC South.
The Bucs have 0 wins, and lost a head-to-head matchup.

When talking games back in baseball, that’s 2.5 games, since even if the Bucs win 2, they still lose the head-to-head.

Then again I don’t watch or care about baseball, so perhaps I’m wrong. There’s a first time for everything.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Evo Says
“Yes it is a reason to curse the front office. If we had some pass rush we could be easily 4-1 right now.”

What was more important in the off season with limited funds? Getting the pass rush or fixing the offensive line?

If you say pass rush, you are way off base.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Kenton Smith…that math seems a little funky to me.

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

Not the NFC but the Bills pulled off a choke in Houston which is even crazier then what Turtle Todd would do. First and ten at your own 3 with 32 seconds left and Allen throws 3 incomplete passes. Time still on the clock and Houston did not have to burn their time outs
Add a Camarda like punt with a decent return followed by a short pass and Houston hits the winning FG. Bizarre way to choke.

  31. darengibo Says:

Can we activate Jake Camarda please?

  32. BucU Says:

Once again if u have a bad HC you are going nowhere fast. I’ve seen enough from Mr Bowles. He’s as good at game day mngmnt as I am hitting a curveball.
I admire some peoples optimism. I wish I had some.

Bowles is showing some tough love and holding players accountable.

Just like he is with JTS, Britt and Dean….. oh wait…

  34. BakerBucs says duh Says:

Did he just say Bowles will never win a Superbowl didn’t he win SB 2020 also the guys friggin name is in the word.super(bowls) what a moron

  35. Christina Bucsbabe Says:

Good news Joe! Go Chiefs BLAH

  36. Davenport Says:

As a HEAD COACH, bowles will not win a SB. He is who his record says he is — but poll after poll, guys say they are confident. Why?

  37. Colonel Angus Says:

“Pout like a butthurt fourth-grader”, well said Joe!

  38. BuckyBuc Says:

    Trade for Myles garret

  39. Kenton Smith Says:

Okay so the math was funky! But I am tired of Rod Munch talking about us being 2 and a half back in our division. And with the baseball season winding down I have gotten slightly confused over games back in the standings. We’re tied for 1st in our division. Atlanta has the tie breaker for now. Munch as usual is making it sound worse than it is. So good for you Rod Munch. You’re right as always. But let the record state that Rod Munch doesn’t care about our National Pastime.

  40. stpetebucfan Says:

    @Kenton

Rod is the blog grump and negative Nellie. While he makes a very valid point I would counter with this…

The Bucs at 3-2 have the most difficult part of the schedule, although after those upsets and this piece I’m not as sure lol, coming up. IF they simply go 2-3 that means the Bucs hit the bye at 5-5 with a week off to heal and regroup and a significant group of rookies and second year players having gained valuable experience.

After the bye the Bucs have seven games, TWO against Carolina, there’s Vegas, the Giants. Bottom line it’s not inconceivable they win out and win 12!!!

Realistically IMHO the post season for the Bucs will come down to NO at home to finish the season. And so it goes…

  41. Kenton Smith Says:

Stpetebucfan if we’re 5 – 5 entering the bye then we’re not the team I thought we were. These next six weeks are going to separate the pretenders from the contenders. I’m thinking 7 – 3 then 6 – 1 to close out. 13 – 4. We’re a contender this year – we are getting better, especially offensively, and these last twelve games we are going to show what finishing strong looks like.

  42. stpetebucfan Says:

    Kenton

I HOPE you’re correct. I won’t disagree however I do have some concerns.

D.R. and I are two of the old guys here and perhaps have seen too much!

Here are my concerns, not disagreement with you but CONCERNS.

HEALTH!!! Will Kancey’s injury actually permit him to perform at his talent level?
GMac missed a LOT of games his first two years before settling in so I’m not in the crowd that has given up on Kancey, just not sure about this season.

Winfield is the most critical loss IMHO. He is a true game changer and an argument could be made that the Bucs don’t make the playoffs last season without Winfield’s ALL PRO level play. IMO Winfield has reached Palamalu status on his way perhaps to matching the great ED Reed. Time will tell.

DEPTH Injuries expose depth. The major two problems that cause me fear are Goeddeke’s concussion…they are impossible to predict and one can lead to another…I’m not truly certain he’ll return and I’m pretty much like Rod when it comes to Skule. He’s been in the league for 5 years but looks like a raw meat rookie.

LUCK and the fact that they pay the other guys and the parity of the NFL.

Having said all that I do not discount your prediction at all. Just not going to bet the farm on it.

  43. churrasco Says:

Some of us are just tired of reading about Baker MVP this and Bucs Super Bowl that while we’re heading for a second consecutive .500 +/- season with an overhyped veteran journeyman quarterback who was a short-term ticket-sales decision.

  44. Kenton Smith Says:

Stpetebucfan, without Winfield we would not have made the playoffs last year. We could easily be 4 – 1 without him this year. That would be winning at a better clip than 13 – 4. It’s a different year. I knew we would be improved from last year but if you told me without Winfield we’d be a rookie fumble from being 4 – 1 ? Handing 2 teams their only loss ? Winfield is probably the #1 defensive playmaker in the NFL and we have proven we can win without him. Just wait until he gets back. Hoping this week. Not betting the farm on it , just describing what I’m seeing with my own eyes. And I’m not singling out Bucky. I’ve always had a problem with rookies fumbling and kickers not making kicks.

  45. stpetebucfan Says:

    @chrurrasco and everybody here.

    “we’re heading for a second consecutive .500 +/- season”

Last year the Bucs WON their division. They WON a first round playoff game.

For me that is all that counts. Show me the trophies! W’s and L’s are only a means to the end not the final result which for me is how far did you go in the playoffs.

So my question for Churrasco and all here out of GENUINE curiosity is what are your reasonable expectations? Would a another division title and a first round playoff win be good?
