Former Bucs offensive lineman and assistant offensive line coach A.Q. Shipley seems to be a real fan of Bucs right guard Cody Mauch.
Sadly, Joe is beginning to hear more and more grumbling about Mauch from Bucs fans. Joe doesn’t see the issue like they do. Then again, Joe is fully convinced what Joe looks for in a quality offensive lineman is wildly different from what may fans want.
Joe guesses one reason for the griping is that Mauch is covering to a degree to help out right tackle Justin Skule. In turn, this may make Mauch look bad at times.
In other words, Mauch may be stretched a little thin.
Shipley, who got a ring with the Bucs in 2020 before a neck injury ended his playing days (he also coached Bucs offensive linemen iin 2021), now tutors offensive linemen (Robert Hainsey is one of his pupils). Shipley also does regular appearances on The Pat McAfee Show.
Shipley’s goal, it seems, is to bring awareness to offensive line play. Good offensive line play.
Earlier this week, Shipley gave Mauch a shoutout, giving Mauch a “Bump of the Week” or lauding him for the best hit by an offensive lineman.
Shipley loved the way Mauch laid out Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat on Sunday. You can see and hear the enthusiasm Shipley has for a good hit from an offensive lineman.
And yeah, Joe fully expects when Luke Goedeke returns, if he returns, you’ll see Mauch playing good ball.

Right on, Q and Joe. Mauch has to play with the stench of the decaying corpse to his right. That’s gotta be tough for 60 snaps a game.

Cody Mauch has been playing well. I don’t understand the hate he gets on here. But then again, these commenters don’t type facts. Ben Bredeson and Graham Barton has been through weak link of the O-LINE all season. Barton is a rookie, getting his feet wet, and also making a position switch……but Bredeson is a vet with a poor track record. I don’t blame the HC too often, l mostly blame the players.
But Todd Bowles should be benching some players. Or at least try moving them to a different position.

Hmmm, interesting speculation Joe. Could the SAME LOGIC apply to Jamel Dean? That he looked bad because he was covering for KJ Britt? How about both Mauch AND Bredeson looking bad because they’ve been covering for our rookie Center (who I’m beginning to think would make a much better Guard)?
Maybe the real question is … ‘Do coaches create game plans that require stronger players to ‘cover’ for weaker players’? Not a clue what the answer is, but it’d be a fascinating question to ask the coaches.

That video got me FIRED UP!
The OL is not a finished polished work. The rebuilding only started last year and is still in progress. Goeddeke has now become the wild card. Concussions can be career ending or at minimum threatening, can you say Ali Marpet?
The ‘blog expert” can stop reading here because science upsets him!!! Those additional guys here and you know who you are, who are still upset that the Roman Colisseum has fallen into disrepair and there are no more fights to the death should also stop reading.
We are learning more and more about concussions and some of it is counterintuitive. We think the obvious like Tua’s are the only real threat when actually it’s the REPEATED BLOWS to the head that leave the damage that causes CTE. My posts are always too long so you can do your own research on the Harvard study that comes to a conclusion that surprised me!
The research found that linemen were more prone to developing CTE than players at any other position.

And so back to the OL rebuild. When Jensen went down the OL went with him.
Wirfs has all the talent while Jensen had all the “MEAN”. Barton is probably more talented physically than Jensen and will easily be able to replace that, but who replaces the “heart” and “meaness”?
That was Goeddeke’s and to a lesser extent Mauch’s role. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed for Goeddeke!!!

BTW THANKS for that video…I can’t stop watching it? Hey it’s not as good as a Gladiator plunging his sword into his opponents throat but it’s the best we can have today! And I’m certainly fired up when I see it!!!
The word that comes to me from that video is not violence but FINALITY.

I largely agree with Lakeland Buc’s perspective.
Izien performs well when playing in his natural slot position, but due to a lack of available safeties, we are forced to use him elsewhere. Barton, as a rookie transitioning from tackle to a position he hasn’t played since his freshman year, deserves some leniency; rookie players often have challenging games.
Britt, JTS, Bredson, and Skule have demonstrated that they do not belong in the NFL. Kancey, if he can maintain his health, shows promise—both GMC and Vea faced similar challenges early in their careers, and based on last year’s performance, Kancey appears to be a viable solution.
As for Otten, I have no excuses for his performance. He has not shown improvement and may be regressing as a blocker, putting his career in jeopardy. As Raheem put it, he is the type of player you tolerate until you can find a replacement. The other four players should be considered for release after this season, and if possible, they should be benched immediately in favor of finding alternatives.
In free agency, Kwon Alexander is available; he’s 30 and wouldn’t cost much to try. Why not give Antonio Grier Jr. a shot next week? It couldn’t go much worse than Kenny Britt has. For JTS, I’d consider bringing in Shaq if that’s possible, though I’m not sure about the rules there. As for Bredson and Skule, hopefully Godeke is back healthy. And as much as I dislike the Gazoo cover, he needs to protect his brain (and stay on the field), so hopefully that fixes things. Unfortunately, unless Klein is ready to play on that side of the line, I don’t see a viable option via trade or free agency for him.
For Dean, I’d suggest getting him some therapy and reminding him that even Hall of Fame corners get burnt now and then; it’s about making more positive plays than negative ones. A few interceptions, and they won’t even look your way. He’s got a ring—play with that confidence. Or maybe consider a big trade with the Jets for Sauce and Hassan at the deadline, especially if Rodgers goes down again or they fall out of contention.

Agree about Kwon if he’s healthy enough. 30 is still a half decade younger than LVD (he’s exceptional though). And the Bucs aren’t replacing LVD but a statue.
I haven’t followed Kwon’s career recently so I have no idea if he has any gas in the take and is healthy enough. But even and old Kwon is better than a young Britt.

BTW, that play is what has been going on this year – and why it can sometimes appear as if Cody is getting beat when it’s not so clear on the tape. This offense does a lot of combo blocking, and the offensive lineman move a ton with a lot of second level blocking.
Watching TV it can appear as if Cody is getting beat badly on plays, like he physically looks overmatched – but on the ALL22, what you see is are bad handoffs. Doesn’t help that Sucke is in there since he’s terrible, and beyond just being awful at blocking, can make the wrong decision on who to take. So, for example, Sucke might supposed to be taking the guy inside as Cody blasts off the line to the left, and instead Sucke picks up the outside guy (even though a TE or RB appears to be responsible for that) then Cody see’s that, lunges back to the right, sometimes too late, and on TV it looks like the guy just completely outclassed Cody. Not to say Cody hasn’t been at fault, but it’s not as bad on the ALL22 as on TV on most of those.
With that said, I thought this video was going to be about how he completely stood up Jelon Carter early in that Eagles game while the trash from Philly was still fresh. Had to be like a 5-second clip or something, Carter didn’t gain a yard and was just stood straight up. That was the most impressive thing I’ve seen from Cody, and addresses his biggest concern last year, which was that he didn’t look strong enough. That really hasn’t been an issue this year, and he’s been getting better as he’s learned the offense.

The OL should improve all year, especially if Goedeke returns. I would like to see Elijah Klein at LG, however.

I see the appeal in drafting Mauch. He has good movement skills and awareness, but he just seems to lack the strength of a typical Guard. He also doesn’t seem to have heavy hands. I think he might actually be better suited as a Center.

I think even Shipley will tell folks that Mauch is still a bit raw. But damn! From point blank inside he put a hit on Sweat that had his grammy yelling for an unnecessary roughness flag!
Mauch has a rook inside and a JAG outside? Yeah he has his hands full. He has done an admirable job for a second year guy learning a new offense again who came in as a tackle and former TE.
