Offensive Line Needs To Show Up (Again)

No sacks allowed in four games?
Last week the Bucs got 347 yards from the arm of quarterback Baker Mayfield. Part of that was his determination to get rid of the ball quickly.
But also part of that success was improved blocking. The Bucs’ pass blocking the previous two games, Detroit and Denver, was a godawful jailbreak.
Of course, if a quarterback gets rid of the ball quicker, it makes his offensive line look better, too.
This shouldn’t be an issue for the Bucs tonight. Atlanta is the worst team in the NFL in sacks, having just four sacks through four games. And you thought the Bucs’ pass rush was lousy!
It’s one thing to get abused by Aidan Hutchinson. It’s quite another to get abused by old man Grady Jarrett, though Matthew Judon was a handful for the Saints’ backup right tackle on Sunday.
If you believe the PFF tribe, Bucs left tackle Tristan Wirfs has yet to allow a sack or a quarterback hit this season and has yet to be whistled for a penalty.

Yeah Wirfs got beat soundly around the outside in the Denver game.
It happens.
Other than that though he has looked his usual self.
Hoping they continue to run behind him.
I like Barton or Mauch pulling to that side.
Our most successful RB screens seem to go that way too.
Judon on Skule will be the matchup to watch.
They also have Lorenzo Carter and David Onyemata who are big inside.
AJ Terrell doesn’t have a single PD this year.
He is better than Mike Hughes who got picked on a lot by NO.
Hughes has 2 PD but they go his way more.
I think Godwin can absolutely torch Mike Hughes in this game.

Kurt Cousins is not beating the Bucs. He has not won against Bowles or in a head to head with Baker. Bucs embarrass their opponents for the second week in a row.

Two week links on the right side: Young Red and Skule. What happened to CM? He did well in his rookie season and now he seems like a turnstile. Skule…well, hmmm. Ok. Jarrett may have a career night if help is not provided. This game is a toss up IMHO. The Bucs will have to have their A game.

Baker didn’t just get rid of it quickly – he got rid of it faster than anyone in the league last week. He averaged 2.22 seconds in time to throw, according to Next Gen Stats. That’s the 2nd fastest time in the league this season. It’s a relief that Coen is the kind of OC that adjusts to cover weaknesses.
Against Atlanta they might as well keep going with it. Not because of the Falcons pass rush, but because the Falcons are excellent at cutting off deep routes and deep intermediate throws. If they’re willing to give up 8-10 yards a throw, the Bucs should be happy to take it.

I agree with richbucsfan. This game is a toss up. That’s why I voted “Not Sure” in the poll. Sure, I want the Bucs to win, but the injuries on D, Goedeke’s absence, and it being an away game, weigh on the Bucs’ chances. You can bet though, I’ll be screaming at my TV for 3 hours tonight hoping to influence the outcome. I will be ecstatic if we come out of this at 4-1.

Division games are always close. more concerned with the pass rush showing up tonight especially with cousins not being very mobile. They should be able to get to him pretty often as long as Bowles blitzes.

It will be an interesting chess match since Coen knows Raheems defense and Raheem is familiar with rams offense.

With all the injuries I have zero expectations tonight. They were able to will their way to a great game last week. Unlikely they’ll have that kill or be killed mindset just like the letdown after the big Lions game win. Next week they came out looking like the Walking Dead for the entire game.

Judon will line up opposite Skule and beat him like a rented mule. Enroll Hainsey to be Skule’s emotional and physical support animal. Yes that means we are often playing with 4 eligible but when Baker has two guys in his face a half second after the snap, what’s the difference?
Please, Todd — please have prepared a prudent gameplan for the gaping wound on the right side, and for the statuesque Falcons QB who if given 3 seconds to throw will kill us.

Tghree of the players leading in YAC will be on the field tonight. Godwin #2 w/188, White # 4 w/182, and Robinson # 5 w/174.
Rice w/KC is 3rd and Kamara w/NO is 10th. Although both had some receptions against ATL both were held to about 7 yards less per reception less than they were averaging for the other 3 games they played in.
When two receivers are are responsible for 1/3 of a QB’s total passing yards in YAC alone it will sting when that gets taken away.
Got a feeling that the running game is going to be what decides this contest tonight.

PFF posted a stat that Baker has 841 yards from a clean pocket and that the Falcons are ranked 28th in getting pressure on the QB…. If they can manage the safety play Bucs could roll on offense.
Defense is the big question mark with Sirvocea Dennis’s injury. KJ Britt is too slow. Who’s going to step up?

Justin Skule found his footing last week. I think he’ll hold up.
Mauch, and a lesser extend Bredeson, are still not getting their jobs done.
They need to. A good running game would make Mayfields life alot easier

I think the Bucs are clearly the better team. But the best team doesn’t always win and Atlanta on their home turf will require same effort as Philly game along with the luck of no injuries or turnovers.

PFF had Skule rated the 5th highest graded Buc vs. Philly, at 71.4…Which one is it, Rod Munch has claimed that not only has Skule not blocked anybody all year, he’s also tackled several Bucs offensive players when they had the ball, thereby being the worst guy to ever play football at any level.

Skule had a bad game against Detroit. No doubt. But only about two possibly two And a half of the sacks were on him. Mauch also had a terrible game. Skule has gotten better. Munch has his usual myopic take on a player he disdains for reasons probably not even clear to him. We all know what we saw when he first took over and it wasn’t good. But he has improved.

@St.petebucsfan Since you’re saying that we are “clearly” better than atlanta exactly what position groups do you see us better in??,because all I can see is WR and we probably have an edge at QB also they are more physical in the trenches so please elaborate?

Not My NFL. They are more physical in the trenches. Why? Because you say so? I rarely agree with anything you say. Your last post forgot to say we have the better record. You neglected to say we’ve scored a bunch more points than they have. Oh and we’ve also given up less points than they have. I don’t care to elaborate any further.

Kenton Smith – there are posters here who prefer to ignore actual results from performance because it interferes with their narrative.
If the Bucs play like the Wash game or Philly game, Bucs win. Play like against Denver, Bucs lose.
Play like against Detroit, coin flip.
Hopefully the coaches have energizing game plans for both sides of the back.

The Falcons are not a very talented football team. They have average players, but they get the best from their average players. They are not the team that’s going to score a lot of points, or blow teams out. What they would do, is to play hard, and fight to the final gun. That’s why they play more close games than most NFL teams.
The Bucs are a very talented football team
But they have the tendency to loaf at times
And stink the field
We never know what we’re going to get from the Bucs
A blowout loss, or a blowout win, that’s usually the case with us
I rather see close games from them, then I’ll see the effort

LakelandBuc – I’ve been watching for 2 years and the closest thing I’ve seen to a blowout is the Denver game.
