Struggling Kirk Cousins

October 2nd, 2024

Joe suspects every Falcons fan would agree on something, and it has nothing to do with how lucky the team got Sunday against the slimy Saints.

Joe’s referring to struggling Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Aside from the Falcons not scoring an offensive touchdown Sunday while beating New Orleans 26-24, Kirk Cousins hasn’t looked like a special QB this season.

He’s certainly not playing like a guy worthy of $50 million per year. Cousins has thrown 4 touchdown passes and 4 interceptions. Also, courtesy of his torn Achilles a year ago, Cousins has been extremely immobile. It’s obvious on film and -2 yards rushing for Cousins this season is further evidence.

But what about that last-minute comeback against the Saints, Joe?

Well, on the winning drive Cousins threw deep and the Falcons drew a pass interference flag at the Saints’ 40 yard line. Then Cousins threw three consecutive incompletions and Atlanta kicked a 58-yard field goal to win with 2 seconds left. Joe wasn’t impressed.

Bottom line is the Bucs will be facing a nothing-special quarterback tomorrow night, a guy the Bucs beat last year in Minnesota — when Cousins was healthy and Justin Jefferson was dominant.

A struggling, one-dimensional quarterback should be right up Todd Bowles’ alley as the Bucs’ defensive guru.

Cousins has a history of struggling and then getting very healthy against the Bucs. “You like that!” Anyone remember that?

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

Kirk is really struggling against the blitz this year. He’s average 2.7 yards an attempt against the blitz. The Bucs have the 4th most pressures (31) in under 2.5 seconds so far this season. Couple that with Vita going against a back up center…. This game could really go well for the Bucs. The biggest limiting factor is Sirvocea Dennis’s injury and how they plan to overcome it.

  3. Mike C Says:

That was a long…………. time ago Modhairken

  4. Teflon Don Says:

@modhairken I came here just to say that! We need revenge from that You Like that game! Blitz the hell out of this guy and hit him!! He isn’t fully recovered and is moving around back there like a mailbox. All that talk about the Falcons over the offseason should hype this team up enough to pull out with the W injuries or not we are just a better overall team! Go Bucs!!

  5. garro Says:

Any time your TD number matches or is lower than your INT number you need to start looking over your shoulder. Baker is way on the right side of this. 8-2

    Jaymiss still play football?

    Go Bucs!

  6. JimBobBuc Says:

“On any given Sunday”. Cousins is better than Bo Nix, and the Falcons’ defense is better than expected. Let’s see if there’s another letdown like after the Lions win. Let’s see if the OL can protect Bake against Judon and Jarrrett.

  7. Pewter Power Says:

You guys gonna fall for it every week? Yep he’s been struggling and so was Bo nix. It’s a week to week league and to get a pass interference call the ball has to be somewhere in the vicinity of the receiver. Even the sage was calling for us to do that! He’s a pocket passer, if the Bucs pass rush doesn’t get to him it won’t be pretty but I’m banking on the blowout in prime time

  8. BakerFan Says:

Cousins seems like a good guy, glad he got his money. But he will not finish out this contract, $100M guaranteed, Falcons may only get 1 year out of this retread QB. Not being able to move at full speed in this league can be detrimental to ones health.

  9. Permanently Moderated Says:

Is anyone from last week’s injury list going to play this Thursday?

  10. Jerseybuc Says:

Falcons defense isn’t close to Denvers. Bucs are the better team it will be a scrappy game for a bit but Bucs win it. 3 sacks on statue man

  11. Paul Says:

Ya’ll are forgetting that it’s now Kirktober. Kirk win-loss record is 18-5 in the month of October when he was with the Vikings. Kirk’s passing has been on point, His receivers are not catching the ball or getting separation.

As far as blitzing goes….per Mike Tomlin (regarding Kirk Cousins): “He’s great against five or more rushers.”

  12. Joe Says:

Is anyone from last week’s injury list going to play this Thursday?

May get an idea in about an hour.

Will know at 6:45 p.m. tomorrow.

  13. Bucs Lives Matter Says:

Not going to dismiss Cousins our any QB that plays against the Bucs for that matter. I remember Bo Nix beat us two weeks ago. But, if the Bucs play like they did against the Eagles, I’m optimistic.

  14. ItsJustOneGame Says:

They were lucky against the eagles too

  15. Josh Says:

Antonio Grier is really going to take advantage of this opportunity. I have a feeling it’s going to be a good problem to have. However, after the Bo Nix debacle, I’m not talking down on any quarterback. They’re professional quarterbacks for a reason; if you don’t show up and play your hardest, you’ll get embarrassed. Clearly, he showed that. Like someone mentioned earlier, Kirk Cousins had his “You like that?” game against the Bucs. I would really enjoy seeing him on his butt all night.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Put the foot on the gas and leave it there. Todd. Aggressive from the coin toss.

    Todd.

  17. JimBobBuc Says:

Like most pocket passers, Cousins hates a pass rush in his face. VV will be doubled so let’s see if the DT3’s can step up and get in Cousin’s face. Maybe Logan Hall wants to play in the NFL one more year? Hey, he got one sack last week – wow!

  18. bob in valrico Says:

this game is a bit concerning for one reason. the Bucs played in a very draining game Sunday with heat and humidity. Here’s hoping they are all recovered enough to play well.

  19. infomeplease Says:

The Bucs need to run blitz, tackle, stay in their lanes, and do their jobs. This is an important nationally televised, division, road game under the lights and it won’t be an easy one!
The coaches and players, once again, need to do their best for 60 minutes! Hopefully the team can stop the run! The “next up” players and banged up ones need to play their best once again for the Bucs to have a chance for a W! IMHO.

  20. Bowles4President Says:

“You like that” still stings to this day. If Cousins is a broken clock, don’t let tomorrow night be the time he is right.

  21. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    Vita.

  22. Bucsministerfuller Says:

The bottom line is our Buccaneers had better be winning by more than a field goal in the final minutes of the game.

  23. Fred McNeil Says:

Garro, Jaymiss is carrying the clipboard for fellow lecherous lout Deshawn Watson these days.

That said, Atlanta isn’t what they’re cracked up to be. London seems to be their main threat passing. Mooney is ok. Pitts was supposed to be all world, but I never hear his name. Robinson isn’t playing that great. Algier is dangerous. I’d hate to have to cover him with Britt. We should be ok if we keep up the pressure and don’t let Algier beat us on dump offs.

  24. Dadgumit Says:

    I smell more buc sacks!

  25. Saskbucs Says:

Sucks that we get no one back from injury for this game. Goedeke head is concerning. Skule is gonna struggle vs Judon. I defend Kancey here all the time but this calf business has gotten ridiculous again.

I’m nervous about this one. Mainly because I just don’t trust the coaches week to week. I want to, I like them but I am accustomed to a roller coaster game plan wise. Great plan one week then a bad one they don’t adjust out of the next. Gotta keep the ball away from Bates and Simmons here. Lean on Bucky and White.

Atlanta is also a veteran team at home. After that hot game Sunday, I just don’t know if our young guys will be ready. I hope I am hand wringing for nothing, but without our reinforcements I fear the outcome tomorrow.

  26. Joe Black Says:

I don’t have a dog in the fight, but I never ever understood why Atlanta spent a high draft pick on a pass catching tight end in Kyle Pitts but never throw him the ball. He was the highest drafted tight end ever.

  27. heyjude Says:

That is so right, no more JJ. The Vikings are undefeated. Cousins seems like a real nice guy, but he is a wild card. It’s pretty quiet about him now. For a long time that is all the media talked about. If the Bucs come out like they did Sunday, Cousins will get frazzled and we can win this on their turf.

  28. Fan of the South Says:

In Cousins 8 games in 2023 he rushed 14 times for 25 yards with a long of ten.

So he rushed 13 times for 15 yards without the time he gashed a defense for a hot 10 yards.

I am not sure what lost mobility from 2023 Joe is referring to. I understand that during the Vikings/Bucs game which was closer than Joe makes it sound Cousins ran for 2.3 yards per carry. Rashaad White ran for 2.3 also does that mean Cousins and White were killing it?

Only advantages the Bucs have over Cousins is he is not great against the Blitz and he is really missing his Tight End.

Falcons took three shots on the final drive and I would imagine Robinson asked Koo what he needed with the ball on the 41 and his answer was I’m good from right there.

Once the Ice Breaks Cousins will be lighting it up. Could be Mr Primetime will do it on Thursday. Stand Alone game.

  29. LakelandBuc Says:

Kirk Cousins is just a rental, a highly paid rental. But everyone knows Micheal Penix Jr is the future there.

  30. Jack Sparrow Says:

everytime the bucs community looks down on an opponent, bucs gets manhandled. Stay focus my friend. Nothing is easy in life.

  31. 813BUCBOI Says:

definitely want to get after kirk….but i dont want to see penix lol….

kid looks pretty good imo and bowles track record against rookie qb’s aint good lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  32. BillyBucco Says:

Fan of the South we aren’t talking about his ground game lol.
We are talking about his mobility IN THE POCKET. if you happened to watch Herbert play last week it was terrible. It’s obviously not to that extent, but he doesn’t have the wheels to AVOID a sack. We still have to get there.

  33. LakelandBuc Says:

    813BUCBOI,

I was thinking the exact same thing
I hope they don’t knock Cousins from the game
Penix might come in like CJ Stroud, Bo Nix

  34. heyjude Says:

True that LakelandBuc and 813. Penix scares me hundred times more than Cousins.

  35. Joseph C Simmons Says:

What does Vegas know that we don’t? Falcons are favored by 1.5.

I was commenting on the exact words typed by Joe

    >>>It’s obvious on film and -2 yards rushing for Cousins this season is further evidence.<<<

As far as Pocket Mobility Cousins has only been sacked 6 times in 4 games. 2 vs Pittsburgh and 2 vs Chiefs. Saints and Eagles got him once each. Mayfield has been sacked 8 times and averages a half sack more per game. Cousins fine in the Pocket and his production is bound to increase once he realizes that his Receivers are not able to go get the ball like Jefferson and Addison were.

  37. Buddha Says:

Atlanta could easily be 0-4, but they could just as easily be 4-0. DVOA has Buccaneers at #14 one notch above Falcons and Saints as third best team in the league. The Saints have even more injuries than the Buccaneers. These Thursday night games are very difficult on the players and coaches. Game may mean a bit more to Atlanta given that they trail the Buccaneers by 1 full game. I believe the Buccaneers view the game against the Saints as more important and resting some guys who could play this week. Look for two or three of the injured to return vs. Saints. Really remarkable that the Buccaneers are 3-1 given how banged up they have been.

  38. unbelievable Says:

Never going to dismiss cousins after the “you like that?” game…

  39. Timbucs2 Says:

    Bring on the sphincter-dome!

  40. Bartow Buc Says:

Hope Cousins continues to struggle under pressure of the Bucs D and Baker continues his hot streak. It’s Bowles vs Morris, and Baker vs Kirk !!

    Go Bucs !! L G !!

  41. Drunkinybor Says:

I mentioned that on a post yesterday. They didn’t gain a yard with time left after that interference call. 3 straight throws and then yong hoecooter kicked that 58 harder. Everybody would be calling the falcons garbage and stupid for not gaining a yard at the end of that game. Their luck is aboit to run out. We have vets that have been there and done it, know how to be pros and lead with passion. Let’s Go Boys!

  42. Bucschamp Says:

Last time we lost there was a poor bronco sorry bronco topic. Lets not get over confident.
