“They Don’t Know What We’re Going To Do”

October 1st, 2024

Bucs fans like Joe that watch the All-22 film have noticed a trend the past couple of weeks.

When Bucky Irving and Rachaad White are on the field at the same time, very good things happen.

You can just see the confusion/hesitation in the defenses of the Eagles and Broncos.

And Baker Mayfield articulated what’s been happening beautifully and simply on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week..

“With both of them in there, they don’t know what we’re going to do,” Mayfield said.

There have been big plays (mostly from Irving) with the Bucs stalling and freezing defenses with motion and misdirection.

Joe realizes defensive coordinators will adjust and some of the success is about Irving’s ability to make defenders miss.

Regardless, offensive coordinator Liam Coen sort of has a proven new weapon few talked about in August: White and Irving on the field together.

Since Tucker is active every game day for returns, it gives the Bucs even more options. You don’t have to worry about over using them together when you have a third back. I’m sure Tucker can run all the same plays, so maybe we use Bucky, and Tucker together, and add to the confusion.

I hope we see a lot of that combination Thursday night!! Nice options to have… It was nice to see Otton get into the flow! Go Bucs!!

  3. Lord Corn Says:

I love seeing it. Both can run or be a receiving option – seems we use a lot of pre snap motion as well. Generating just a little hesitation / confusion is huge. It’s why so many RBs do better with read option mobile QBs vs non mobile qbs.

About damn time. I liked what I saw on Sunday. Let’s see if they can continue

  5. Eckwood Says:

It didn’t confuse Denver but has been successful outside of that .

  6. D-Rok Says:

As soon as Bucky got drafted, I posted that we needed to see some 2-back sets. Glad to see it!!!

A quick rant is I cannot figure out WHY more 2-back sets aren’t used in the NFL, for all the reasons Joe listed in this very article. The key is having 2 backs that can run and catch, and we indeed have 2 of those. Indeed we do!

Hopefully the Bucs can ride this occasional 2-back set all the way to the playoffs and beyond.

What about a set with Godwin, 2xTE (Otton and Culp), White, Bucky?

Looks like a run, smells like screen, but play action pass is on the table because Godwin, White, Otton, Culp are all solid receivers.

  8. Jerseybuc Says:

Coen put together a brilliant game plan other than Denver guys been shar. Better lock coen up so they don’t lose em if this continues

Teams will be totally fooled by us passing on first downs….

  10. orlbucfan Says:

When’s Coen going to call a rollout QB option? He did it during preseason, and it was perfectly executed by scrubs.

  11. Saskbucs Says:

Need to see it lots Thursday. ATL LB core is decimated right now. Make these backups deal with White and Irving both coming outta the backfield. A little deception and those guys will bust things open.

    RFLMAO…you just won the interweb!

  13. Kenton Smith Says:

Just imagine it. The I formation. Mayfield with White the fullback and Bucky the tailback. Baker rides the fullback into the hole and hands off if it’s open. If not Baker keeps it full speed at the DE. If the DE crashes down on Mayfield he pitches and Bucky is free. White as first option fits his running style. Bucky as the third option (pitch man ) fits his style. Baker can cut it upfield if the DE freezes at all. It doesn’t have to be a wishbone to be a triple option. Even work an option pass into it. 6 or 8 times a game. It’ll keep these defenses honest and it fits our personnel. I know nobody does this anymore except as a gadget play but we should. Damn it would be exciting to see that – maybe down on the goal line.

“All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.” – Sun Tzu

im worried about cody mauch….he’s still getting tossed around

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. JimBobBuc Says:

The OL still has to block. ATL saw Bake’s quick throws from last week so I’m betting they will be all over the quick throws and rely on their very good safeties as backup. If the OL win the LOS then we could bust some big runs and passes.

  17. Kiki VanDeWeghe Says:

i’ll tell you what you do. you bring back vinny “grease lightning” testaverde and rest baker for until the playoffs, that’s what you do

  18. SenileSenior Says:

Man I love the discussion about many options on offense this year. Coen promised many looks, “eye candy”, to give the defenses pause. Even with a lot of young talent we will be able to continually mutate and evolve as the season progresses. Loved the reference to Sun Tzu. War analogies do apply in football.

    Go Bucs!!

  19. Adam’s Angry Says:

Run the pro-set offense with both of them in the backfield and then surprise everyone with the OPTION!!!!

Ignore me… i had 4 beers at lunch.

  20. LakelandBuc Says:

Raheem Morris and Liam Coen worked together with the Rams. Rah the DC, Liam the OC. This could become a chess match between them. Rah has been around for a very long time, Super Bowl teams, he’s been a coach on both sides of the ball…..this is 2nd go round as a Head Coach. This won’t be a cake walk for the Bucs. This Falcons team is better than people think they are.

I’m expecting the Bucs to win
But it will be a dog fight, can go either way
This short week don’t make things easier
