Todd Bowles Gives Trey Palmer A Shout Out

September 30th, 2024

Trey Palmer (10) and Rachaad White celebrate Palmer’s 15-yard touchdown catch Sunday.

After a solid game to open the season, Bucs rookie receiver Jalen McMillan has sort of disappeared. But Sunday, a couple of teammates stepped up when McMillan couldn’t go.

McMillen had two big catches, one each in Weeks 2 and 3, but that’s not great production.

McMillan tweaked a hamstring Friday and couldn’t yesterday. So the Bucs had a pair of receivers step into the void.

The first was speedy Trey Palmer. He made a sweet catch with Darius Slay hanging all over him for a 15-yard touchdown on the Bucs’ second possession. Palmer didn’t last much longer as he suffered a concussion. But it seemed Bucs coach Todd Bowles wanted folks to know of Palmer’s contribution.

“The ball [Baker Mayfield] threw to Trey [Palmer] was right in there,” Bowles explained. “The DB had great coverage on that one. I think it was [Darius] Slay but it was a hell of a catch.”

That has been Palmer’s main bugaboo: inconsistent hands. If Palmer can find a way to consistently catch the ball, it will be hard to keep him off the field with his wheels.

Then there was Mayfield’s old Oklahoma teammate Sterling Shephard, who basically took over for Palmer after the Nebraska product left the game.

Shephard ended up with three catches averaging 17 yards each.

“It’s fun just to have his energy in the huddle,” Mayfield said. “[He’s] somebody that [has] played a lot of ball, obviously stepped up in a big way and so did Kam [Johnson].

“Obviously with Trey [Palmer] hurting himself, those guys stepped up in a huge way. [I’m] proud of those guys, especially ‘Shep.’”

If nothing else, the Bucs showed Sunday that they are deep at receiver. McMillan couldn’t dress and the proverbial next man up, Palmer, delivered.

When Palmer left, the next man up, Shepard, rose to the occasion.

Even Kameron Johnson didn’t embarrass himself unless you call dropping a touchdown pass an embarrassment.

So it was good for the Bucs to demonstrate their receiver depth. No wonder Bowles wanted folks to know how good of a play Palmer made for six points.

Wait, There were more injuries and concussions yesterday?

  2. Pickgrin Says:

Hell of a throw by the QB and a big time catch by Palmer with the DB draped all over him.

Mayfield displayed a lot of trust in his receiver to throw that ball into traffic with a CB covering so tightly…. and “Big Play Trey” rewarded Baker for that trust and near perfect throw with the catch of the game!

Too bad Trey got his second concussion of the season.

  4. Mchammer Says:

What does it mean when a player gets a second concussion? not familiar with the current rules*

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

Repeated concussions are bad for his short term and long term health. Repeated concussions in a short amount of time can cause symptoms to persist and take much longer to heal. It will also be easier for him to get concussed in the future because once you have one it lowers the threshold get another every time you are hit.

As far as procedure I suspect Trey will miss the Atlanta game at a minimum. I don’t think there’s any way he can get through the protocol by Thursday, but what’s more important also is if he gets another at any time he’ll be put on IR for the year.

  6. Half_Sac Says:

Great play from the receivers but still a lot of drops. Evans has three alone and Johnson and Shepard both dropped a TD pass. The game could’ve been a bigger blowout if those two passes were caught.

  7. Irishmist Says:

I’ll say it again. Any player who gets a concussion should be forced to wear the Gazoo helmet for the rest of the year. If the owners are serious about player safety, they need to make it a rule. A lot of the players are probably afraid of looking weak and won’t take the initiative to protect themselves unless it’s mandatory.

Here we go again with internet doctors that have magically become concussion experts with their very selective and arbitrary concern. Don’t see all this annoying dialogue with MMA, but with football everyone wants to be big government, manage an individuals own agency and protect them from themselves or something. We tell you what’s good for you

McMillan and or Johnson have not really impressed me Joe. Nor has Palmer yet. Hard to impress when you get only one snap (the Broncos). Shepard impressed me Sunday. In the preseason he apparentlly was hitting on all cylinders prior to getting hurt. Palmer’s catch was good. Hope he can play Thursaday. Coen was smart to get him in the mix this week. Should have been part of things against the Broncos!

    Go Bucs!

  10. Alstott40 Says:

Yea that’s what the NFL needs is more rules.. you guys realize this is a full contact sport? Goodell is ruining football enough on his own don’t need you fans to wanna make it worse. Them players know the consequences Vince why they get paid very handsomely

  11. Rover Says:

I almost broke valuables in my home after Kam Johnson dropped that touchdown. Why is everyone so high on this kid? The way the players vouched for him to make the team is alarming for someone who is capable of dropping such a “gimmie” touchdown. Jury is out on him. In the meantime, Go Bucs!

  12. PSL Bob Says:

That throw and catch was a thing of beauty. Talking about on a rope!

  13. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Gofortheface – I am a concussion and brain injury expert. There’s nothing arbitrary about it.

  14. HC Grover Says:

My fave catch was to Godwin. The one over the middle whe he reached out and snached the ball after it was already zipping past him. He must have Octopus tentacles.

  15. Mchammer Says:

    Thank you, A Bucs Fan.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Kam Johnson is the new Kenny Bell without the hair.

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Google can be your friend if you can recognize reputable sources.

The UFC’s concussion protocol is similar to the NFL’s, and the UFC hopes to see it become the standard for MMA worldwide.

  18. BillyBucco Says:

You guys are pushies for saying Johnson is Kenny Bell. Have you not ever had a 5 year old throw you a ball, where you expect it in the guy and it goes high outside? I KNOW he SHOULD have caught it, but don’t you think people make mistakes? i was hoping they would get him involved again after with some targets to ease his mind, because we may NEED him this year. It’s not like he dropped the game winning TD with zero time on the clock.

  19. Dave Pear Says:

If Kam Johnson comes back from injury and makes a play in a game, it will be his first. I hope his hype doesn’t stay locked in the training camp vault.
